NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS To say Tarell Alvin McCraney is masterful at articulating black male coming-of-age stories in America would be an understatement. With Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet, the final play in McCraney’s genius Brother/Sister Plays trilogy, we return to the fertile mythological world of San Pere, Louisiana where Yoruba deities and everyday Black folks co-exist and are one in the same. It is obvious to us as the co-directors and queer men of color (and hopefully to you) from the rhythms of the language that McCraney was inspired by Yoruba mythology to write beyond and above the gritty, dangerous world of the projects in San Pere, LA. and conventional heteronormative narratives about Black life. The characters in Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet particularly, and the entire Brother/Sister trilogy in general, are invested with a size and weight beyond their meager daily lives. What we have endeavored to achieve (with the aid of our brilliant cast of actors and design partners) is a movementinfused adaption of what is, in many ways, a conventional coming-of-age, coming-out drama inspired and informed by the unconventional style of the play that is unabashedly and unapologetically Black. We are offering a lens onto a black boy’s reckoning with emotional abandonment and his burgeoning sexuality that bridges the gap between this world and the next as its protagonist navigates doubleconsciousness and trauma that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy. We live in a world that is awash in diverse and contentious worldviews. How can we better understand these differences and co-exist in ways that engender peace and harmony rather than strife and conflict? One approach is to appreciate the power of myth. Myth provide us with narratives and images that make our lives intelligible and meaningful—both as individuals and collectively as cultures. Where else can one find such a powerful tool kit for investigating our irrepressible story-making proclivities and their power to shape our world, for better and for worse? As we mentioned with our previous collaboration In the Red and Brown Water, our goal is for the people on stage to be transported into a ritual, and this has to mean that things will happen that don’t normally happen. Languages change and are spoken in tones not normally spoken. Through movement, we speak Yoruba, we speak creole, patois, we speak African tongues. Looks change. Smells change. Touches change. Movements change. And we bring you, the audience, through a change, too. We want you, the audience, to feel full with an experience that you haven’t had before. We want to bring you in touch with the concept of Asè… —Charles O. Anderson and Robert Ramirez, Co-Directors
