NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT

I have always said that the point of life is that it’s short, and so we should live it to the fullest. For me, that means always being in the moment; always being honest; always saying what I want; never letting my fear get the best of me. I’m at my happiest, calmest and most fulfilled when I can do all of these nobrainer things. So why is it so hard to do them? I don’t have a good answer to that question. I suppose it’s all just part of being human. Matawan doesn’t have an easy answer to that question, either. But I find that, in theatre, merely recognizing a shared flaw can (hopefully) make the audience feel better about having that flaw to begin with. The play also presents a creature who doesn’t suffer from the human condition. So often, we write off non-human animals as being savage, dumb and a nuisance (dare I say, threat?) to our existence. But I’ve always admired their singularity—their ability to go after what they want at all times with little hesitation. This is especially true of sharks.

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR I’m afraid of a lot of things. Spiders, for one. They give that hot kind of fear that wakes me up in the middle of the night. Strangers, even though strangers have never done anything to me; it’s a more of a prickling anxiety. A broad pressing fear on my shoulders when I think about this world. And deeper, in my stomach, a fear about all the ways that I could or have failed. When I only think about these fears and the myriad more that I know friends and neighbors have, I start to wonder how we even get around day-to-day. How does anyone ever leave their house? How do we reconcile our fears with our desires to connect with others; our need to find freedom and liberation; our spiritual calling to be our best selves? Matawan is a play about people whose fear drives them and whose struggle for control in the face of the vast uncertainty and randomness of this world costs them everything. We shouldn’t follow the examples of the people in this play.

NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURG Matawan is the theatrical account of the actual and extraordinary series of shark attacks in New Jersey in 1916. Researching this play was a process of discovering exactly how much historical research had already been done. From the bulldog dying of heatstroke to the basket-making factory, Matawan leaps from the archives of newspaper accounts, census records and old maps under Dan Caffrey’s wry guidance. In telling this story, we are making history. It has become a cliché now to note that the story of history is dependent on who is doing the writing. In the collaborative art of theatre, the story of this history is dependent on who is doing the writing, the acting, the directing, the choreography and, certainly, on who is doing the watching. In this theatre space, we collaboratively make history, folding the “then” into the “now.” Of course, we are not historians in any official capacity, we are artists. As artists, we’re allowed a little more freedom in answering the question, “whose history gets recorded?” In Matawan, we present a side to the story that never gets told. We hope you enjoy making history with us.
