NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Spring Awakening will always hold a special place in my heart. My first exposure to it was when I was cast in a production of it in 2012. I had no idea at the time how much this show would come to mean to me; how much each of the themes of this piece would resonate and parallel moments of my own life. It still does today. Spring Awakening shines a light on the longing we all feel to connect. It’s about how wild and hard it is to be young, the friendships we forge and the struggles of growing up and figuring out who we are. This is a heavy show. Spring Awakening tackles issues of anxiety, shame, abuse and suicide, but there is also so much love and laughter to be shared along the way. Sex, heartbreak and joy drive the action of this wondrous musical. I am endlessly proud of this cast and elated that you are here to share in the beauty of this show. Every stitch in Wendla’s dress, every pool of light, every chord played is being done so with love for this world we’ve created together. What the designers, performers and production team have put together for you is nothing short of magical. Thank you for joining us and may all of your summers be purple.

NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURG

When I was a teenager, like most of the characters in Spring Awakening, I felt like what was happening inside my world, inside my body, was so powerful and scary that no one could ever understand. Somehow, in that moment, this musical – an improbably collage of Frank Wedekind’s controversial play, spoke to me. It told me that what I was feeling was valid; that there was a community of people experiencing these things all around me; and that if we could only reach out to each other in the right ways, we might all make it. In that spirit, we would like to provide resources to help audiences tackle some of the experiences of this play. »» Those who experience suicidal ideation can and do survive and thrive beyond these episodes. Often, it’s the support of friends, family and professionals that are key in this process. »» If someone you care about is experiencing plans to harm themselves, expressing hopelessness, severe mood swings, withdrawing from social connections, sleeping too little or too much and/or increasing their drug or alcohol usage, we encourage you to seek help from a medical professional as soon as possible. »» If you have concerns about a UT student, please contact the Counseling and Mental Health Center’s 24/7 student crisis hotline: 512.471.CALL (2255). »» If you are concerned about faculty, staff or another member of the UT community, please contact the Behavior Concerns Advice Line: 512.232.5050 or via message at besafe.utexas.edu/behaviorconcerns-advice-line. »» If you are concerned about someone outside of the UT community, please contact the National Suicide Hotline at 1(800)273-TALK (8255) or via message at suicidepreventionlifeline.org »» If you or a loved one is experiencing domestic violence, we encourage you to contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at: 1(800)799-7233 or via message at thehotline.org.
