NOTE FROM THE PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTORS Welcome to UTNT Fall 2020! It is an honor to present two new works this season by our ascending third-year M.F.A. in Playwriting candidates in collaboration with second-year M.F.A. in Directing candidates: Wyeth Airlines Flight Thirteen by Lena Barnard, directed by Andrea L. Hart and poolboy00 by Sam Mayer, directed by Mike Steele. Now in its fourteenth iteration, UTNT has consistently served as a launchpad for The University of Texas at Austin’s graduate and undergraduate theatre artists; artists who are continuing to change the American theatre landscape and influence hearts and minds around the globe. More than any other year, these trailblazing projects called for unique production concepts, development processes and presentation styles. The works you are about to experience are the products of insight, collaboration, craf, dedication and innovations for how we share stories in this changed and changing world. UTNT stands for UT New Theatre. Welcome to the launch of these inspiring works. Thank you for being the first!

NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT AND DIRECTOR We started work on this production in March, as the news of the COVID-19 pandemic broke. As we began to build this production from our homes and through Zoom, we initially designed a set on a stage for an in-person audience. That production had a playground with a swing set and monkey bars and a slide. We were excited to share it with you. As the summer progressed and the pandemic worsened, it became clear that we needed to rethink what we were planning. Finding the new version of Wyeth Airlines Flight Thirteen took several months and looked diferent than most of the theatre we’d made before. It looked like an early morning film shoot at a local park. It was the hours of work that our media designer put into developing a system that let our actors interact with each other while filming safely in diferent rooms. It looked like a final, onstage performance filmed live from end to end. Through this process, we learned about ways we can still connect despite time, space and distance. Theatre isn’t just about cramming into a big, dark room and turning of our cell phones; it’s the awareness that—despite time, space and distance—we’re all sharing the same story. The only piece that’s missing from that story is you. What we are sharing with you tonight is still theatre, but it’s a new kind of theatre. We’re still going to have actors on a stage performing for you, an audience, but we won't be in the same space as you at the same time. From our space to yours, we invite you to think about middle school. Maybe middle school was a long time ago for you, maybe it’s happening right now. Think about how you felt closer to your friends and more alone than ever before. The ways you felt like no one could possibly understand what you were going through. We’re right here with you.
