It was founded in 1191, the Duke Berthold V von Zähringen and, according to legend, he called Bern (German Bär - bear) because he killed a bear while hunting there. Today, the bear is in the city's coat of arms and is the mascot of the city. From the nineteenth century on the catwalk on the river Aare (in the form of a moat, hence the German Bärengraben) are kept bears.
