EDITORIAL

Introductions required…. Welcome to the first issue of UTV Planet Magazine and undeniably introductions are required. I believe it’s essential for me to share with you, who we are and the passion that drives us. My partner Steve Maillet and I met over 2 years ago at a local off-roading event. At that time Steve was already the publisher of a successful French publication called “Planète Quad Magazine”, a publication dedicated to the off-roading enthusiast. Within the first few minutes of our conversation, I could already recognize that we fueled the same passion, the love for off-roading. At that time our interests were mostly geared towards ATV’s, but that was all about to change with the release of a new pilot project allowing the use of UTV’s in our local trails. During one of my weekend rides is where I caught my first glimpse of a side-by-side. It was a barebones Polaris Ranger RZR 800 and my interest was immediately sparked. That interest rapidly grew into an obsession and ultimately resulted not only to the purchase of my first UTV but also gave birth to “www.sidexside.ca”. Today, sidexside.ca is a virtual magazine and hosts one of the largest communities dedicated to anything UTV in French speaking Canada. The day I brought my new 2011 Polaris RZR 800 S LE home, is the day that the sport of UTV off-roading revealed itself to me. I spent weeks researching the net in amazement not only discovering the sport itself, but also all the aftermarket parts, add-ons and modifications, which were readily available. This revelation had a significant impact on my life as it made me realize that I had to share this newfound passion with others and to do so a career change was in order. But changing careers after being in the Information Technology field for most of my adult life to take on a new endeavor especially in this economy, was this really a prudent choice for my family and I? As most would react, the fear of uncertainty set in and I would have to content myself with sharing my newfound passion via our newly launched website at the time, sidexside.ca. Months passed and as life would have it, it finally dealt me a hand. However the hand it dealt me was not a favorable one, I lost my employment and it rocked my family’s foundations. To most this would be devastating, but to me it was a “sign”, a sign that the moment had finally come for me to

pursue the venture that I had been contemplating for months. Steve and I finally teamed up and founded Raven Media INC, an off-road media company specializing in web, online media, print publications and event promotions. After close to a year and countless hours of hard work, our off-road media network now consists of several online websites, community forums and 2 print publications, one of which you are presently reading at the moment. If you picked up this magazine and after reading it came to the conclusion that you are as fanatic about this stuff as we are, I urge you to do a few things. Find us and follow us on our social medias (Facebook and Twitter), visit www.utvplanet.ca and register to our community forums and share your passions with other enthusiast and help us grow a Canadian forum dedicated to sport of UTV off-roading.

the word, are you hosting a major off-roading event and require media coverage? If so, do not hesitate to contact us at info@utvplanet.ca. We hope you enjoy our first issue and that it brings a different flavor of what already exists on the market today. Thank-you for giving us a look and we hope to find a place amongst your favorite offroading magazines! We would like to take a moment to thank our family and friends for all the support that they have given us during this past year. Of course we can’t overlook the support of our business partners and would like to thank them for their confidence and in believing in our aspiration! That is our story and the passion that fuels our everyday lives.

I’D LOVE TO TRADE IN MY POLARIS RZR FOR THIS. -Robert McKinney // El Paso, TX

Robert bought a Polaris RZR† before we launched the Can-Am® Maverick, so he wanted to check it out. He did what we always recommend: he took one for a test drive. He experienced the ergonomics of our larger cockpit, the precision of our TTA rear suspension and the power of our 101-hp Rotax® 1000R engine. And just one ride made him wish he had more choices when he bought his RZR.

Polaris Racing’s Cody Rahders finished second and sits third for the series.

Pilot Pablo Veglia Earns Third at WORCS

On the West Coast at round six of the World Off-Road Championship Series, three Can-Am Maverick™ 1000R X rs pilots finished in the top five of the SxS Pro Production class. Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs Pilot Matt Rowell Wins at MAXC

Can-Am Maverick™ 1000R X rs racer Matt Rowell won the UTV Modified class in Nashville, Ind.

with a $2,000 purse on the line. SxS vehicles were faced with competing in two motos and six total laps over the two-mile course.

Southern Indiana features rolling hills and is an ideal location for the MAXC racing series. The first round of the SxS series, the Big Nasty Cross Country race presented by Lucas Oil & Red Bull, was held at what was once known as Ski World Resort, which shut down in 2004. According to the MAXC release, the side-by-side vehicles lined up to do battle Friday evening

NightKrawler Kustoms’ Matt Rowell, who used to compete in a Can-Am Commander side-byside, recently purchased a Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs to race the MAXC SxS series. In his first race behind the wheel of the Can-Am, Rowell swept both motos on his way to winning the UTV Modified class at round one of the MAXC SxS series.

Baja’s conditions and meticulous setup requirements. We see Sappington’s podium finish as a big stepping stone for the new Maverick’s success in a very demanding race environment and we look to carry this momentum over to future desert racing events this season.”

Can-Am X-Team member and Maverick 1000R X rs driver Cory Sappington (Desert Toyz) finished second in the UTV division at the SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada, Mexico. A total of three CanAm Maverick race teams competed in the 40th annual running of the desert endurance race on the Baja Peninsula. “Our Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs racing teams had a successful Baja 500, despite only one making it to the finish line. Desert Toyz’s Cory Sappington’s second place podium finish was impressive considering the gnarly race conditions,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. ”Our other two racing teams each held the class race lead at one point during the race before falling victim to

Sappington, the sole driver of the Desert Toyz Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs, started quickly, passing three of the five side-by-side vehicles that started in front of him. However, a flat tire around the 50-mile mark slowed his pursuit of the leaders. During the downtime, Sappington was passed by several competitors and lost valuable time on the leaders. After resuming the race, the Desert Toyz team suffered another setback about 25 miles later as an aftermarket fuel pump failed. With some ingenuity, Sappington fabricated his own a fuel pump cooler and exhaust heat deflector and was back on the gas. He found his groove in the rocky desert terrain and starting passing competitors and vehicles from other classes. At mile market 358 Sappington stopped to check on another Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs race team. The Murray Racing / Del Amo Motorsports / Can-Am team, which had owned the lead and had more than a 30-minute advantage over the UTV field, suffered a high-speed crash in a tricky ravine section. Although the occupants were

uninjured, the vehicle’s extensive front-end damage ended their day. Sappington, who took over second place in the class, pushed on through the cool night air with his Maverick running perfectly. Roughly 40 miles later, he had to stop to repair another flat tire. However, once repaired, Sappington drove the remaining 100 miles to the finish line to earn second place in the UTV class and would be one of only two UTVs to actually finish the race. It was the first Baja 500 podium finish for the CanAm Maverick 1000R X rs side-by-side. “I am very impressed with the power and handling of the Maverick. I have raced in many other bigger engine class vehicles and the Can-Am Maverick is just as fun. The twin-cylinder Rotax engine feels like it has the power of a four cylinder,” said Sappington. “With no pre-running, no power steering, essentially all stock Can-Am components and a rookie chase team we have beaten Baja! At the finish I was numb from driving all 500 miles in 20 hours.” Marc Burnett and his show-stopping Monster Energy Maverick 1000 X rs was the first official CanAm driver to lead the UTV class. The team, having passed several other types of vehicles including trophy trucks, built a sizable lead in the class before dropping out due to a mechanical issue caused by the aftermarket exhaust.

Honda Pioneer 700-4 2014 Honda announced the release of the 2014 Honda Pioneer 700-4, an all new four (4) person Sideby-Side. Honda is very excited to give everyone an early look at this incredible new machine.

The all new Pioneer incorporates industry-leading innovations such as a versatile, adjustable seating configuration that can accommodate two, three or four people. The all-new rugged and aggressive styling will clearly distinguish the Pioneer from the current Big Red Side-by-Side., which will be discontinued after the 2013 model year. The Pioneer’s four-seat innovation seats four in a package that’s sized like a two-seater — Now you don’t have to choose between a two- person or four-person Side-by-Side: The Pioneer boasts an innovative convertible design that allows the two rear seats to fold independently into the bed. Owners can adapt the Pioneer to fit their lifestyle needs, two- seat, three-seat or four-seat configurations. Both rear seats fold quickly and easily without the need for tools, and once folded away the Pioneer’s tilt bed space can be fully utilized. And unlike conventional four-seat Side- by-Side vehicles, the Pioneer is sized like a two-seater so it’s highly manoeuvrable and uses less garage space. Yamaha Motor Canada has announced the arrival of the much-anticipated Viking side by side. All-new from the ground up, the Viking is one of the most off-road capable and versatile Side by Sides on the market. Jon Blaicher, Yamaha product manager for Side by Side commented, “The new Viking is sending the message that Yamaha is back in a big way. The Viking is designed for maximum utility and recreational capability. We’re confident in saying the Viking is the new standard in the 3-person, multi-purpose segment.” Highlights include Yamaha’s most powerful 700 class engine ever, an industry first 3 person offset seating, the roomiest cabin in its class, available electric power steering, full underbody skid plate, 4-wheel disc brakes and no compromise 600lb load capacity. Of course, tried and true Yamaha

features like Ultramatic CVT transmission, and Oncommand 4WD are included. Along with the impressive new Viking, the Grizzly 700 received important changes that have made the already legendary Grizzly even better. Revisions to the combustion chamber, piston, valve timing and exhaust increase power output while improving gas mileage by an incredible 30%! Improvements to ride comfort and steering effort have also been made to ensure the Grizzly stays as the ATV all others try to measure up to. The YFZ450R also receives a host of new changes. Among them, the industry’s first assist and slipper clutch, improved top end power and revised ergonomics for better maneuverability. The YFZ450R remains as the top competition model ATV available anywhere.

2014 KAWASAKI TERYX4™ CAMO Last season, few competitors in the hotly contested four-seat Side x Side market could even come close to matching the Kawasaki Teryx4™ CAMO. Now with improved power, handling and performance, thanks to key improvements to its engine, suspension and lighting package for 2014, this super-tough Side x Side will definitely run and hide from the pretenders—and not just because of its tough coating of genuine Realtree APG™ HD camouflage! This durable Teryx4 is more woods-ready than ever, thanks to a substantial displacement boost to its heavily upgraded 90-degree V-twin, which now generates 10% more torque and 8% more power for tackling steep hills, negotiating mud bogs and scampering over rocks. At the same time, it also while delivering better fuel economy so you can drive it deeper into the forest, farther out on the range or longer in the desert between fuel stops. The 2014 upgrades go well-beyond its new larger and more powerful engine. All-new highperformance Fox Podium coil-over piggyback shocks let the Teryx4 attack the trail with more comfort than ever before. And fear not the dark, because the CAMO model’s new LED headlights offer higher intensity lighting for improved visibility in dark driving conditions. With its cutting-edge Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, proven technology that provides light, low-effort steering for navigating through the most adverse conditions with ease, this tough Side x Side can take you anywhere, any time. The Teryx4 is designed and built with the strength to handle the rigors of four-door off-roading. Its new larger 783cc V-twin engine delivers serious torque in the low- to mid-range, just where you need it in a four-seat Side x Side, and with improved fuel economy, it’s also more efficient. The 90-degree V-twin design is revered for its stump-pulling power, distinctive sound and easyto-harness flexibility, making it the perfect powerplant for a machine like the Teryx4. It’s also super smooth, with perfect primary balance that helps keep things comfortable for the driver and the passengers for the entire drive. It delivers instantaneous and controllable low- and mid-range response partnered with eye-opening hauling ability. In fact, Kawasaki’s engineers purposely gave the big V-twin optimum camshaft profiles and

revised exhaust headers to deliver exciting power when ridden solo or with a single passenger, but also provide plenty of torque for carrying more people or heavier loads. A Continuously Variable Transmission, centrifugal clutch and a three-mode electronic Hi/Low-Range 4WD system that can be selected by rotating a dash-mounted switch to deliver optimum gearing and traction. cab frame, the new RANGER CREW 900 frame also features profile tubing, providing a 360-degree sealing surface for every cab component. Windshields, roofs, doors and rear panels follow the shape of the vehicle, locking directly into the cab frame’s precision contours. Many PRO-FIT cab components feature Polaris-exclusive Lock & Ride™ technology for quick and easy on and off. The cabs are 60 percent quieter at idle and 40 percent quieter at 20 mph/32.2 kph. To complement the hardest working features, the RANGER CREW 900 features a restyled, all-new cab and a more rigid chassis for a new class of smoothest riding in a multipassenger vehicle. The completely redesigned cockpit fits five people more comfortably and offers class-leading ergonomics, including a new center console with added storage and cup holders. The adjustable driver’s seat, found on Limited Edition models, and standard tilt steering gives occupants more options in comfort. The new seat belts are easier to use and Polaris added a full shoulder harness for the rear, middle passenger. The cab also offers tons of storage both in-dash and under both the front and rear seats. For an incredibly smooth ride and optimal handling that complements the RANGER CREW 900’s longer wheelbase, the vehicle features an all-new chassis that is more rigid, with increased

The new unit also is easy to own and maintain. The wet sump engine, which offers 100 hours between service intervals, is easily accessed from under the rear cargo box, and has an easily accessible oil check and fill. It also features common metric fasteners for most parts and grease zerks to flush joints. For operator ease, there is fuel access on the driver’s side and a 11 percent larger gas tank that holds 10 gal/37.85 liters, making gassing up more convenient and less frequent. The RANGER CREW 900 is available in Sage Green, Solar Red and Polaris Pursuit Camo. Limited Edition models include Sunset Red and Titanium Matte Metallic. Electronic Power Steering (EPS) is standard on the Polaris Pursuit Camo and Limited Edition models. The RANGER CREW 800 EFI and RANGER CREW Diesel, both offered in Sage Green, round out the 2014 full size, multipassenger offering.

2014 RZR LINEUP Polaris RZR has defined the recreational sideby-side by offering the broadest line of vehicles including trail, high performance and four seat offerings for the ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility.

ALL RZR LIMITED EDITION MODELS WILL FEATURE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING.

This past December, Polaris introduced the most powerful, most comfortable and most premium RZR ever built, the RZR XP 900 H.O. Jagged X Edition, which was so popular, Polaris had to extend the offering of this limited edition vehicle. For Model Year 2014, Polaris is offering enhancements to its current product offerings along with introducing more limited edition models consumers want.

Polaris’ trail segment, including the RZR 800 and RZR 570 models, continues to be the side-by-side of choice for trail enthusiasts. At 50 in/66 cm wide with true on-demand all-wheel drive, independent rear suspension and electronic fuel injection, there’s nothing on the trail that stands in the vehicles’ way. For an even better trail experience, Polaris will offer dual-rate suspension springs, introduced on the RZR 800 last year, on both the RZR 800 and RZR 570 for 2014. The springs provide increased ground clearance across all payloads for less bottoming out in rocky trail conditions. Other enhancements to the RZR line include Bighorn tires on all base RZR 800 S and RZR 900 models. The launch of the RZR XP 900 H.O. Jagged X Edition brought a premium RZR to the high performance RZR segment; and for Model Year 2014, Polaris is offering a premium trail model with the

introduction of the RZR 800 EPS XC Edition. The 55 in/139.7 cm vehicle will appeal to the trail enthusiast who isn’t confined to 50 in/66 cm trails and wants premium features for increased performance. Features of the RZR 800 EPS XC Edition include a Matte Black color scheme with custom graphics; power steering; Walker Evans shocks on all four corners to tackle the toughest of terrain; comfortable, black-on-black PRP seats with driver’s side adjustable slider; LED headlights; wide fender flares; and 14 in/35.6 cm Vader rims with 26 in/66 cm Maxxis Bighorn tires.

POLARIS IS INTRODUCING THE NEW PREMIUM TRAIL VEHICLE, THE RZR 800 EPS XC EDITION.

Also new for Model Year 2014, all RZR limited edition models will feature electronic power steering. For unmatched throttle response and acceleration, the ProStar 1000 was developed with dual 48mm throttle bodies with new long tip fuel injectors, ensuring each cylinder is supplied with the air and fuel it needs to produce unmatched power on demand. To deliver that power to the wheels, the

24 www.utvplanet.ca

RZR XP 1000 has an ultra-efficient driveline featuring a retuned, high performance PVT system to distribute the massive107 horsepower from the engine to the transmission. Polaris also specifically geared the transmission to optimize the power of the ProStar engine. With greater than 80 percent of peak engine torque available from 3500 to redline, the RZR XP 1000 has huge torque on tap for the most aggressive dune and desert riding. To fully utilize the new-found power, the vehicle needs suspension and agility, and the RZR XP 1000 delivers in true RZR fashion. The unit boasts the most advanced suspension for the most control and smoothest ride at any speed. To float over bumps, the RZR XP 1000’s 3-Link trailing arm rear suspension features upgrades in both geometry and design offering 25 percent more ground clearance at the trailing arm and giving the vehicle a whopping 13.5 in/34.3 cm of ground clearance. The new 3-link geometry allows surface-hugging grip as the vehicle pulls through corners from the use of optimized camber gain, and the increased length of the new trailing arm provides a better ride and additional strength. Up front, the RZR XP 1000 features an exclusive front suspension geometry that results in less steering effort for easy maneuverability. The RZR XP 1000 conquers whoops and soaks up chatter with its 90 in/228.6 cm long wheelbase and industry-exclusive 29 in/73.7 cm

Maxxis Bighorn tires on all new 14 in/35.6 cm cast rims. The larger tire provides both better ride and higher resistance to pinch flats. For a near-bottomless feel, the RZR XP 1000 boasts industry-exclusive Walker Evans Position Sensitive Anti-Bottoming Needle Shocks on all four corners. These exclusive shocks feature piggyback reservoirs up front and remote reservoirs in the rear that are 16-position compression adjustable with preload adjustability. These 2.5 in/6.4 cm diameter rear and 2 in/5.1 cm diameter front needle shocks are extreme performance shocks from one of the best in the business. Capable of handling high speeds and extremely rough terrain, the internal needles interact with specifically-positioned chambers allowing progressively more damping deep into shock travel to improve ride performance and increase bottoming resistance. The shocks are paired on all four corners with the dual rate/dual spring coil-overs for 18 in/45.7 cm of rear travel and 16 in/40.6 cm of front travel to provide a comfortable ride in all terrains. The RZR XP 1000 is the most responsive to the terrain and driver providing unmatched agility under all conditions. To ensure the vehicle’s High Performance On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive system could handle the industry-leading power and provide the ultimate in responsiveness to the terrain, Polaris revamped the system for an 80 percent improvement in strength.

Article by : Howard J Elmer | Photos by : Mario Boriassi It seems to me that Honda, as a company, is never happy. By that I don’t mean that they don’t take joy in their products. Instead, over the years, I’ve seen them take perfectly good vehicles and change them – often much before the expected “expiry” date. No, it seems that almost as soon as a product makes it into production a group of engineers’ starts tinkering with it and changing it. So, on the surface at least, I think it’s fair to say that they just aren’t happy with their results. The other way to look at it though would be to say that Honda never stops improving – a statement that I find applies company wide.

LOOK

This past June I saw another example of this constant improvement culture at Honda’s South Carolina Recreational Vehicle production plant. In an elaborate line-off ceremony a white jumpsuit clad employee drove a new Pioneer 700 UTV off the end of the assembly line to the applauding approval of the entire plants staff. This new product is the next step in the evolution of Honda’s first UTV product “Big Red”. However, short of also having four tires, it is a completely different vehicle. Normally, generations or linear evolution is how all motorized vehicles progress – whether cars, trucks, ATVs, snowmobiles or motorcycles. But here in – once again – I saw that company trait. Honda is just never happy. Big Red was launched just a few years ago yet here it was already being replaced. In fact, that’s one reason for the name change as well. Pioneer is so different from Big Red that to call it a generational upgrade would be wrong; so instead Honda decided to start a new timeline with a new name – Pioneer. The choice of name is also telling because a Pioneer always comes first. By using that name Honda is saying that this UTV will be the first in a line of vehicles that will always be improving from this starting line. So, while this story is about the new Pioneer, Big Red must be mentioned because it was the first. Big Red gave Honda a UTV product that from a competition point of view made them a player in the market. However that first effort was not without its drawbacks. Big Red had a number of design issues; none of which on its own was serious. Instead taken together it made Big Red a good first effort that Honda was keen to follow up with another effort. The building of the new Pioneer models includes an all-new chassis formed around Honda’s 700ccfour-stroke engine driving its automatic transmission. This new chassis includes a long-travel suspension system that smoothes out the ride over tough terrain. The new bodywork comes standard with integrated doors and headrests; after all keeping the occupants inside the UTV in case of mishap is the key to safety in these machines. However, Pioneer is primarily a workhorse and as such can carry loads over tough terrain as well as being able to tow big loads. But moving people is where the Pioneer really departs from the original Big Red. This new unit is the traditional side-by-side at first glance,

built for two. But on closer inspection you’ll see that a quickly convertible seat system changes its body into a four-seater. Best of all it doesn’t have to stay in one or the other configuration – it changes as needs do – and quickly. This conversion also takes into account the need for just three seats – so from the conventional two forward seating positions Pioneer can add a third and a fourth. The “how” is pretty straightforward. The two rear seats tilt up out of the bed using a release latch which than locks into place in the upright position. Do one seat back – then the other – as needed. The rear passengers also get access to three-point seat belts, which are built into the Roll Over Protection Structure (ROPS). Here they are out of the way yet easy to get to when needed. The Pioneer cargo bed, like most UTV beds, tilts. I mention this because even with the convertible seats you don’t lose the tilt function. Mind you it is disabled when the seats are up and passengers are in them. This was one the things we tried first during the introduction. Tech writers have a bad sense of humour. Anyway, they don’t tip when occupied.

LOOK

In South Carolina we had a chance to drive the new off-the-line Pioneers on the plant grounds. Here they have a 10 kilometer test track that winds though pine forest, rocky stream beds – and some lovely mosquito infested swamp – felt almost like Ontario in May. The point of this bush bashing though was to give us a feel for the new Pioneer. To that end the overriding sensation was of driving a machine that was smaller than it really was.

The wheelbase on Pioneer is a little longer than the one found on Big Red - 76.8 inches versus 75.7 inches—yet overall length is just about the same. The key body difference is in the width though. Pioneer is nearly three inches narrower. This addresses a complaint about Big Red – it was too wide for many trails. These new proportions give the Pioneer a tighter 14.8 feet turning radius. But, almost as importantly, the ground clearance has been raised too – to 10.3 inches. However, perhaps the most telling specification is found in the suspension travel: both new models have a full 7.9 inches of travel on the double-wishbone independent front suspension system, while the same setup gets 9.1 inches of in the rear. This is a two-inch gain. Again, a significant upgrade from Big Red. Also those twin rear shocks are adjustable using a spring preload, so it’s easy to change from light use to a rate that can carry heavy loads. Both versions of the Pioneer 700 get new front tires sized 25 x 8-12. These new tires help give the Pioneer improved steering feel and more agile steering. Pioneer turns quickly and easily following twisting trails almost as easily as the Honda Foreman that was out front leading the pack. Its suspension sucks up bumps – pops over logs – and never really bottoms out. The suspension is not stiff per-say; it’s just gives and returns quickly. The most telling trait though is that Pioneer felt almost the same with a single driver as it did with driver and three passengers aboard.

We didn’t have a chance to tow or weigh down the box, but from the feel of the engine I suspect this will be no problem. Driving the Pioneer is Honda’s veteran 675cc liquidcooled OHV single-cylinder four-stroke four-valve engine with Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI). This is a motor that is a proven performer – and in keeping with Honda’s credo – they give customers all the power they need, but not power for the sake of bragging rights. In fact this is Honda’s biggest motor and I agree that any more would be pointless. Getting the power to the ground is an automotive-style transmission that features a hydraulic torque converter, three hydraulic clutches and an Electronic Control Module (ECM) to automatically select one of three forward gears and one reverse gear. The ECM monitors throttle, speed, engine rpm, gear selector position, brake application and engine oil temperature. It uses all these impute to decide what gear to use and how quickly to shift. Also, on downhill slopes the transmission provides positive engine braking for slowing power. As for traction Pioneer uses full-time 2WD for improved traction. Real 2WD – not slip and grip. This is a non-differential rear end—one similar to ones used on Honda ATVs equipped with IRS. When the driver wants to change settings a gearshift selector makes it easy to go to 4WD mode. Pioneer also has a front differential lock for maximum grunt. Of course there are no belts – that’s a given with Honda, but it is a major point that needs repeating. Honda transmissions use a durable shaft-drive design. So what else needs to be mentioned? That’s a long list however there are just a few that I think are worthy. The engine gets a new mounting system that helps tune out vibration. This idea than extends to vibration-isolating bushings, on every contact point for the driver and passenger—steering wheel, handholds, floor, seat bottom and seat back. Past that the 2WD/4WD selector also gets a new dual shift-mapping program that automatically selects between two transmission shifting modes—Cruise or Sport mode. Yes this is automatic – the computer senses what the driver is doing and changes accordingly. My first thought was good – this helps with power. But it was later that I also realized that it’s also about fuel economy. Pioneer can stretch its fuel capacity this way. As for onboard capacity we know Pioneer can carry up to four adults – but past this the tilt bed will also accommodate a 1000-lb while also towing 1500-lb. Multiple D-rings are found on the bed and wall of the cargo area. For work (especially at night) Honda has added 37.5 watt headlights, a higher AC generator output—from 410 watts on Big Red to 450 watts, increased its fuel capacity and built a big sealed glove box. It’s interesting to note that the new Pioneer was designed by Honda Research and Development in Ohio, and built at Honda South Carolina. In many ways this North American influence and flavor is what I tasted during the debut of this new UTV. Honda promises us more Pioneer versions in the future as well. I look forward to that.

Polaris invited us out to Parker, Arizona to attend the product launch for the new Polaris RZR XP 1000. The invitation arrived shortly after the official unveiling of the vehicle, so at this point we all had seen the introduction material sent out by Polaris which was abundantly publicized across every major off-roading website, not to mention all the major social media channels. After reviewing the vehicle specification and seeing the promo shots, I must admit I couldn’t wait to be in that driver’s seat. The fact that the product launch was held in Parker, Arizona made this even more exhilarating, as Parker is where the “Best in the Desert” race is held, what better place to test out the full potential of the RZR XP 1000!

FIRST

LOOK

After two long flights and a 3 hour car ride, we finally reached Parker, and we were lodged at the BlueWater Resort & Casino. The BlueWater resort features a Casino, 100-slip marina and beach. After a long car ride of seeing nothing but desert, it was a welcome change. I must tell you that I never experienced heat as I did in Parker it was 48 degrees °C upon our arrival, one thing for sure I will never complain about hot weather in my area again! Polaris hosted a very informal supper were we got the chance to talk to the Polaris staff about the RZR XP 1000 and of course get our first look at the machines. Two vehicles were proudly on display sporting different packages. A barebones with the “Titanium Matte Metallic” color scheme and a fully decked out with the “White Lightning” color scheme, both were as equally impressive. Now all that was left was to get them out on the trails, but this had to wait till the following morning. After a quick breakfast we all eagerly jumped into our vehicles and headed out to the test site. Upon our arrival a series of RZR XP 1000 were perfectly lined up and ready to ride. After a brief safety meeting we were let loose on the vast desert trails to finally get to experience the new XP 1000. Polaris proudly boasts that the RZR XP 1000 is the pinnacle of extreme performance. Let me tell you, they have every right to make this claim. The vehicle is powered by the all new ProStar 1000 engine providing 107 horsepower with a true 999cs of displacement, making it the most powerful in its class. As soon as you punch the accelerator you feel the powerplant come to life. The power on tap is simply aggressive and you immediately feel the sensation of being forced back into the seat. To deliver that massive power to the wheels, the XP 1000 features a retuned high performance PVT transmission.

44 www.utvplanet.ca

Nothing is harder on a vehicle than pushing it through desert conditions in extreme heat, and push it we did. We pushed it through whoops, jumps, rocks and whatever terrain we could find. Not once did it leave us hanging or wanting more. I can honestly say that I have never driven a stock machine with so much power and agility.

To achieve extreme performance requires more than just a powerful powerplant, suspension and handling must be on the menu. Once again Polaris delivered! Our attention was immediately drawn towards the 2.5-inch Walker Evans needle shocks with 16-position compression adjustable remote reservoirs mounted on the rear pillars. The idea behind this was to move the reservoirs away from the engine to maintain heat and regulate the oil flow within the reservoirs. The shocks are paired on all four corners with the dual rate/ dual spring coil-overs for 18 in/45.7 cm of rear travel and 16 in/40.6 cm of front travel. The Internal needle valve technology controls the oil flow within the shock to resist bottoming out. The RZR XP 1000 sits on a set of Maxxis Bighorn 29 in/73.7 cm tires which are mounted on all new 14 in/35.6 cm cast rims and has a 90 in/228.6 cm long wheelbase. The upgrades in design and geometry to the all-new 3-Link trailing arm rear suspension delivers a impressive 13.5 in/34.3 cm of ground clearance. The RZR XP 1000 rear suspension is impressive to say the least and Parker was the ideal settings to put it to the test. Whoops and bumps you say? We hit whoops and bumps the size of craters and the faster we hit them, the smoother the ride became. The suspension is definitely designed to assault extremely rough terrain. The RZR XP 1000 is a whole new machine from the ground up, featuring an all-new tubular design providing substantial improvements in stiffness and durability. Its all-new redesigned interior provides a superior level of comfort as well as a more responsive feel for the driver. The newly designed seats provide a whole new level of comfort compared to the seats found in other RZR models and feature a new thin-film technology for a drier ride in wet conditions. We also really appreciated the new seat sliders, which allow you to adjust the seats without the use of any tools. Another welcome addition is the factory installed quarter panel doors, which open and close very easily at the push of a button and no-look closing.

Polaris listened to feedback from previous owner and incorporated simple but useful new features. A new backlighted instrument cluster, a sealed smartphone storage compartment, a 50 percent larger glove box for more storage and dual removable drain plugs to facilitate the cleaning on the interior cabin. Lets not forget that sick LED floor lighting! We all love to accessorize our RZR, Polaris addressed this as well with some new innovations in the vehicles chassis. The chassis is specifically engineered for Polaris accessories. Integrated mounting points situated along the vehicles frame and pass-through areas for routing wires allows for quick and simply installation and minimal install time. For the limited time we had behind the wheel, our first impressions are very positive towards the new Polaris RZR XP 1000. Polaris has once again raised the bar in the performance side-by-side race. Without a doubt that the XP 1000 is definitely fast, responsive and the suspension and handling come second to none. It can handle anything you throw at it and then some; it never once left us with the feeling of wanting more‌ Drivers need to realize how much power the RZR XP 1000 can actually deliver and it goes without saying that the RZR XP 1000 deserves respect, especially from the novice rider. As soon as we can get our hands on one a more in-depth review will follow in a future issue.

2014 CFMOTO

SNYPER 800 EX MORE THAN JUST A CLONE ! Article & Photos by : Mario Boriassi The first time we saw the SNYPER 800 EX in action was at the “12 Heures de La Tuque” endurance race. For those of you which are unfamiliar with this event, the 12 Heures de La Tuque” is the largest off-road racing event is Canada. CFMOTO Canada entered not one but two SNYPER’s into the two hour endurance race, bold move, as they knew this was a highly publicized event and that their machine’s needed to perform. Not only did both machines finish the race, but finished in fourth and fifth place overall. This certainly incited our interest and we needed to take a closer look at this new model.

RIDE

We chose a trail system in “La Mauricie area located in Quebec as our test site. This area offers a very diverse terrain set, tight wooden areas, wideopen straights, harsh rocky patches and of course that perfect mixture of wet, soft earth we all love, mud! What we deemed was the ultimate cocktail for most trail riders. When we finally got the SNYPER 800 EX unloaded from the trailer and gave it a good walk around, we found that this was a good-looking machine! The red/white painted color theme, front/rear stainless bumpers, 14-inch aluminum wheels and aggressive new front end, all added to the esthetic appeal of this vehicle. The SNYPER 800 EX also comes standard with front/read LED lighting, a 3000 lb. winch and ELKA shocks. Inside the cockpit you find a full digital instrument cluster, illuminated switches and for that added level of safety on the trails, even a horn, turn signals and emergency hazard lights. The overall ergonomics is well conceived with confortable

seating, adjustable steering, easy select shifter and a closed glove box for inside the cab storage. Once strapped in, you find yourself in a good seating posting with ample room to access the easy to reach controls. Under the hood the SNYPER 800 EX has a water resistant storage area, perfect for tools, riding gear or even your lunch. The rear cargo box has a 100 kg (220.5 lb.) capacity, ideal to transport extra gear for those long rides. The Canadian edition of this model has some differences from its global equivalent, which is known as the Z-force. Differences being ELKA shocks, CVTECH transmission and larger 30 amp battery. Ergonomically speaking, the SNYPER 800 EX may not have the interior trim and finishing level of a CAN-AM COMMANDER, but when compared to a YAMAHA RHINO or POLARIS RZR, it is a contender.

FIRST

RIDE

We played in the deepest stuff we could find and the extra ground clearance helped in concurring these beloved muddy play pits. If we got stuck, no worries, the 3000 lb. winch, which comes standard with the SNYPER 800 EX, would have surely come to the rescue, plus isn’t getting stuck half of the fun? The SNYPER 800 EX is powered by a 800cc Vtwin, liquid-cooled, 8-valve, 4-stroke engine and CV-TECH CVT transmission producing 63 HP. Fuel is provided by a 46mm Delphi throttle body, two Delphi fuel injectors and Bosch fuel pump. The Delphi electronic fuel injection system keeps the engine’ s performance at its peak and delivers optimal acceleration. Mash the pedal and this V-twin comes to life, power is immediately transferred to the tires with almost zero lag and you rapidly recognize that this machine has enough power on tap for a fun invigorating ride. On the wide-open straights we tested on we found the power output impressive and never craved for more speed. The acceleration was also perfect for this size of machine and provided for exhilarating moments as we punched it across fast open trails. The SNYPER 800 EX has a dual A-arm setup and ELKA shocks on all 4 corners. Suspension travel of 11.02 in/280 mm (rear travel) and 11.5 in/283 cm (front travel) and a respectable 11.08 in/300 mm of ground clearance.

As it turns out, the suspension and handling of the SNYPER 800 EX is great. It corners with very minimal body roll and in this aspect, is much comparable to a POLARIS RZR 800 S. As for bump absorption, the ELKA shocks were on the job. Bumps, rocks and other harsh terrain were all tackled with ease. However for a more confortable ride, upgrading to a higher quality shock such as the ELKA STAGE 4 might be a viable option depending on the terrain you like to ride on. As we must all deal with trail width restrictions, the 59.5 in/1510 mm width of the SNYPER 800 EX permitted us to access tight trails and crossings. If you are like us and absolutely love to play in the mud, you will appreciate the 11.08 in/300 mm of ground clearance. RIDE

What seemed to be the biggest gripe of consumers on not only the SNYPER 800 EX but also the CFMOTO product line in general was the availability of parts! We had seen this over and over on different forums and social medias during our research on SNYPER 800 EX. We decided to contact CFMOTO Canada for some insight on this apparent problem. We felt this information was vital for you the potential consumer, more so than the top speed of the vehicle. We met the Vice-President of sales, which graciously gave us a tour of the CFMOTO Canada installations. Much to our surprise we entered a large section of the building, which was fully stocked with parts and accessories for their complete vehicle line-up. This is where we discovered that CFMOTO Canada has a fill rate of 95% once an order is received from a dealer. So a word to the wise, if the SNYPER 800 EX is a vehicle you are considering, choose you dealer wisely! As it became quickly apparent to us after our visit that the problem was not parts availability or readiness, but that the problems seems to lie with dealers not holding parts in inventory. As you noticed I named this article “More that just a clone”, not because I am delusional and that I don’t see the physical similarities between the SNYPER 800 EX and the POLARIS RZR 800. I just personally feel that the days of considering the SNYPER as a copycat or cheap RZR knockoff are over as CFMOTO has gone to great lengths to constantly improve this vehicle. Physical similarities may still be present, but the SNYPER 800 EX also offers its own unique styling and a ride that the casual trail rider will appreciate. Obviously this is not a machine for the adrenaline junkie, but the SNYPER 800 EX delivers enough power and handling to provide for some invigorating moments on the trails. This is a definite contender in the 800cc class and a vehicle well worth considering. Visit your local CFMOTO dealer and give a good objective look at the SNYPER 800 EX, take it out for a spin, you wont be disappointed…

with the Range The Polaris Ranger side-by-side can’t disguise its hard working design; however year after year Polaris does manage to add useful improvements; eye catching colour schemes and a ride quality that almost makes you think you bought this Ranger just for fun. For 2013 The Ranger adds five inches to its chassis – specifically between the axles. However Polaris didn’t just weld in five more inches of tubing; they redesigned the chassis with what they call a “center spine” which made it longer but also increased its rigidity. This improvement smoothes out

54 www.utvplanet.ca

the ride (particularly when loaded with people and cargo) and more importantly improves traction. The 900 cc four-stroke, twin cylinder engine is now pushed back, under the box, just forward of the rear axle where this position puts the weight of the motor where it can do the most good. The weight of the passengers, ahead of the engine, levels the ride and stresses the front axle – a great balance. When this weight management design really shines is while moving from one terrain to another and shifting the 4WD system on the fly.

Suspension has also received an extra inch of travel – bringing the total to ten. That’s in addition to the already decent ground clearance of 12 inches. A feature that is a by-product of this design change is the engine is now fully under the cargo box. Tilt the box for full and easy access – everything from checking the oil to more complicated maintenance now gets lots of elbow room. And speaking of engines; what you’ll find under that box is the new ProStar Engine that puts out 60 horsepower and has class-leading torque. This kind of power demands respect from the operator – and because that operator may not always be you Polaris also offers an optional speed limiting system. A black ignition key (found under the middle seat) maximizes engine power and top speed, while a yellow key electronically detunes the motor to a top speed to just 25 mph ( 45 km-h). This innovation speaks to Polaris’s concern with safety. But, the more obvious safety features on the Ranger have to do with keeping the occupants (and their arms and legs) inside the cab and protecting them in a roll-over situation. My test unit had automotive style (lap and shoulder) seat belts for all three seating positions. Also material webbing on each door extends to head height – so even if the driver or passenger’s whole body is pushed up against it you are not going out. This is the key to Rangers’ protection. The ROPS system guarantees that the cage will not crush in a rollover, or distort in a side impact – so long as the occupants’ bodies stay inside, they will be safe. Also well placed hand holds for passengers help can them in their seats on rough terrain. Now, nothing can make you snap the webbing in place – or do up the seatbelt for that matter. But at least a feature of the web does make it more likely that you will. A guide bar that fits into a slot in the forward (bottom) A pillar is always engaged – so doing up this webbing is a matter of closing just

56 www.utvplanet.ca

one pressure snap. This follows the rule that owners are lazy – but if you make it easy for them to be safe; they are more likely to use it regularly. My test unit came with a removable glass windshield and hard plastic roof – also removable –both optional. I mention this here because besides the obvious benefits I came to look at these items as safety features also. On tight bush trails the heavy glass fends off branches and the hard roof stopped more than one breaking branch from bashing my head in; I know this is not the intended purpose but hey – better than a stick in the eye. The other point to mention is wind, rain (snow) and cold. I picked up the XP when there was still snow on the ground in northern Ontario. I noticed right away just how much warmer it was without the wind slashing my face and hands – and when the cold April rains came the roof kept me 90% dry – even without doors (which are also available). Having had these features on my Ranger I wouldn’t do without them now.

So, let’s talk about work – you don’t buy a Ranger unless you intend to work it – at least some of the time – or long enough to convince your wife that that’s why you bought it.

These features (and many others) come with what’s called “Lock & Ride” technology. This system installs these options using mostly swivelling clips – no tools needed – and most things install in less than a minute. To accomplish this all XP’s come with standard mounting points already built into its base shell; so any accessory you buy will fit without having to drill. A feature that works for young, old and with any load is the available Electronic Power Steering (EPS). This is particularly nice when working with a trailer during repetitive backwards and forwards manoeuvres. The steering always feels easy, yet, well connected due to its variable assist. This feature changes the amount of assist needed for low-speed steering while backing off at higher speeds so as not to be too light. That reminds me back and forth manoeuvring is really helped with the short, dash mounted shifter that moves quickly from forward to reverse and back again.

For 2013, with this new chassis and motor, the XP will tow 2,000 lb (907 kg); a 1,000 lb (453 kg) in the box and a total payload of 1,500 lb (680 kg). Polaris is being kind to suggest that three adults won’t weigh more than 500 lb combined. Mind you the three across seating will accommodate three adults – normal ones. Three 300-pounders won’t work, space-wise – though the Ranger Helping the off-road ability of the XP is the large, would certainly haul the load. aggressive tires it comes with. Meanwhile once back on the trail or in the rough stuff two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are just a flick away – something you can use on the fly as needed.

I realized how good this system was when I found that the EPS felt the same regardless of how many drive wheels were hooked up. In part this came about because with the convenience of the 4WD selectable rocker switch on the dashboard I found myself switching drives frequently. I particularly appreciated the single-wheel turf mode that let me make tight turns with-

The Ranger can seduce you into thinking it’s a truck – it’s not.

The Ranger uses a standard two-inch hitch receiver which makes it easy to switch the tow-ball from your truck to your UTV; there is even a spot for the safety chains. When it comes to towing though I’d like to share my observations – the key one being that the Ranger is capable of much more than the manufacturer is willing to publish. However, and I can’t stress this enough, for safety sake tow heavy trailers only on level ground. The Ranger can seduce you into thinking it’s a truck – it’s not. It’s surprising how little the suspension squats with a load on – that’s one reason – the other is its power. Still, it weighs only 1,360 lb (616 kg) and simple physics dictates that if you are going downhill and the trailer weighs twice what the tow vehicle does – well it just might start pushing it. Don’t forget that just because the Ranger can haul it – doesn’t mean you should. A nice feature though (which works with the upgraded drive belt and clutch) is engine braking that works in low-range. It holds the XP and what you are towing very confidently. It’s also nice because it is so steady in its motion that the tires don’t tear grass or spray gravel while it’s engaged.

Now the box is a feature that I have used a lot – mostly with good results. The plastic material itself is tough and easy to wash out. The standard metal tie-downs are useful – but I really like the stake holes around the rim of the box. I found they fit shovels, clippers, rakes, etc. For dumping there is a release handle on each side of the box – though only one has to be pulled to get it to work. An assist shock helps lift the box, but when fully loaded you will have to do some heavy lifting. This brings me to the tailgate. When clean it works fine – once it’s got dirt in its mechanism – not so much. I found lifting and pulling up at the same time usually worked, but it was not uncommon for it to jam. Mind you – the whole tailgate lifts off easily; maybe that’s what I should have done. The Ranger XP 900 does so many things wellwhether collecting leaves, or hauling my boat to launch. Writing this I realize just how dependent I’ve become on it – it’s like a hard-working son (one that also doesn’t complain). But, best of all, with it I don’t have to beg for help.

It all started with an idea, an idea to have the most performant shock in the industry. Even though ELKA was already an industry-leading manufacturer of innovative high-performance suspension products, this idea sent their engineers back to drawing board to conceive and completely redesign a new high-performance shock. ELKA’s engineers wanted a shock, which would virtually eliminate any type of harshness and spikes at low and high frequency. The shock needed to be ultra lightweight and with infinite bottoming resistance, the bar was set high for the engineering team! The ELKA Stage 5 project started back in 2008 with the Research and Development department focusing on ATV racing, strong emphasis was put on ATV racing since this was ELKA origin and is what got them started back in the year 2000. The ELKA Stage 5 testing phase lasted roughly 2 years from 2008-2010 and it took 6 genera-

tions of the Stage 5 before the shock would be finally ready for the consumer. How does a company like ELKA perform quality assurance? Simple, equip a select number of the best North American racers with Stage 5 shocks and let them run it hard, and run it hard they did. Racers that contributed to the QA testing participated in races all across North America, races like “Les 12 Heures de la Tuque”, WORCS and BAJA. Having excellent veteran drivers to participate was the key for the Stage 5 success, and the big names were present, names like: Dustin Nelson, Beau Baron, David Haagsma, Jasmin Plante, Mike Cafro, Wayne Matlock, Cody Miller, Shawn Hess, Cody Janssen, Joel Hetrick & PY Deneault Positive feedback immediately started pouring in, racers were reporting improvements in their overall riding ex-

perience. Coming in and out of turns was easier; rider’s experienced less fatigue and lap times were dropping significantly, this was a very good start for a completely new shock! In 2011 ELKA Stage 5 for ATV’s were finally released to the consumer and several racers adopted the new Stage 5. Once again the new Stage 5 made the spotlight propelling racers to several podium wins across various racing circuits. In 2012, ELKA was now ready for a new challenge! The Stage 5 was having great success in the ATV market, so ELKA decided to push the envelope further. In December 2012 with the help of Rob Alford, Curve Industries & René St-Onge they were able to launch their new Snowmobile Stage 5 on specific back country models. After experiencing a great success in the ATV and Snowmobile markets, ELKA was now ready for the UTV world. Testing immediately began and once again the sign was hanging on ELKA front door, driver’s wanted. The racing community once again answered ELKA call; the Stage 5 commenced testing in local circuits with the help of drivers like, Charles-Antoine Villeneuve, Alex-André Gingras, Didier Raby and Eric Paquin. Early tests exhibited promising results; the Stage 5 was now ready to hit the bigger circuits.

ELKA pushed its way into the US circuit and obtained the help of some it’s biggest names, Cody Miller, Shawn Hess, Alex Fortune, Wayne Matlock and Tim Wyatt, all got involved in the Stage 5 development. With outstanding performances from the Stage 5 across North America’s UTV racing scene, the

Stage 5 was finally ready to be considered for consumer production. The ELKA Stage 5 is the first of its kind in the UTV industry and will be ready for a consumer launch in the late 2013, early 2014 and will be available for the following models, Can-Am Maverick, Arctic Cat Wildcat and the Polaris RZR.

The Eastern connection ! By Martin Horik

I am Martin Horik and my passions will become yours in this new magazine! It will be my pleasure to share my adventures with all of you. Here are a few details on your off road buddy! My love for motors started on two wheels in 1979. I completed a motocross career the decade that followed. Since my dad is from Edmonton AB, and my mom is from Quebec City, I had the chance to sample a bit of the best parts of the country while going to the races and visiting some far away family members. After hundreds of races in Canada and in the US during my career, I spent more than a year in Europe in 1989 to compete in the 125cc world championship. With races in France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Holland, even though I did not score a single point in seven races, I’m the only Canadian to this day to have participated in a full World Motocross Grand Prix season. Those years were the foundation of what was to come: hosting a TV show! 20 years passed after my GP’s. During that time, I worked as an agent for artists and I founded my own business offering guided tours on Quads, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and jet-skies. In 2009, the stars all aligned and I got a shot at TV. Presently I am on my fifth season “on air” with 110 episodes under my belt. The main themes on my shows are power sports and more! I travel, I drive, I discover and get behind just about anything that is fun and has a motor! That also gives me good opportunities to meet passionate people and competent professionals. The main thing is not trying to be the best in any motorized discipline; the only goal is to try everything! Nobody is doing it for me! My shows are not yet across Canada, and the French language shows are broadcasted from New Brunswick across Quebec to the eastern parts of Ontario. At this moment we are taping my new series “Martin Horik OCTANE” in French and English en route to a full Canadian broadcast very soon...Check your listings!

64 www.utvplanet.ca

Over the years, I have driven and sampled, Sportsman Car Racing, Super Trucks, Snowmobiles, ATV’s and UTV’s of all makes and models. During my travels I even had the opportunity to visit the Victory factory USA, KTM Austria, BRP Canada. The Canadian armed forces allowed me to pilot some of their vehicles as well; armored vehicles, F-18 Hornet, helicopters and of course I can’t forget the Canadian Coast Guard Ice breaker. I also participated in Formula 1600, car drifting, demolition derby’s and piloted just about ever motorcycle and motocross known to man. I think you got the point that I’ve had the opportunity to try and sample quite a few things. At this moment my goal is to be a good show host and writer to make you feel right in the action with me inside UTV Planet magazine.

This season my collaboration with UTV Planet magazine started with a two-hour endurance race on the new Can-Am Maverick at the “12 heures La Tuque”, and the production of our first television episode, out of a series of 26. I ended up with a very respectable second place finish overall on a surprising Can-Am Maverick along with a few blisters on my hands after pounding the machine on a very tough track. This is my introduction to all my future buddies out there. In the next UTV PLANET issue my article will be focused on riding, showing you pictures and offering you some input, some info around the machines... With loads of fun! That is why we love sideby-side’s, period. Feel free to ask me questions and give me some info on any topic you’re passionate about.

Have fun, be safe. Your pal Martin H.

The XP1K vehicles were built by a team of off-road racing experts. Mark Holz of Holz Racing Products received two stock 2014 RZR XP1000’s from UTV Undergound.com and rebuilt them from the ground up. He fabricated each car from scratch and added a litany of Holz products for weight reduction and additional strength. Meanwhile Randy Anderson of Walker Evans engineered and installed a custom Walker Evans suspension set-up, normally reserved for off-road race trucks. Additionally, Kevin Kroyer at Kroyer Racing Engines teamed up with MCX Turbos and produced the most powerful UTV engines ever built, specifically for the XP1K vehicles. The cars sit on custom grooved Falken Wildpeak A/T Tires and feature safety equipment from Mastercraft and Impact. They are wrapped with a custom Mad Media designed graphics package that is used throughout the campaign.

XP1 K Vehicle Facts •

Two identical XP1K cars were built by Holtz/Walker/Kroyer so if one was damaged, filming could continue.

One of the key features of the vehicles is an hand/cutting brake, which allows the car to brake loose and rotate tighter.

The highly tuned 1010cc Kroyer Racing Engine package runs on late model VP race fuel.

The 15-inch Wild Peak A/T Falken Tires were custom siped and set up by the Falken Tire Team for maximum grip.

The combination of the MCX-USA Turbo and the Kroyer Racing Engine package creates 190 horsepower to the wheels; utilizing 13 pounds of boost, making the XP1K cars some of the most powerful UTV’s in history.

One of the benefits of the differentials is the ability to switch between 2WD and 4WD on the fly.

The Walker Evans Racing shocks are the same shocks that come stock on the RZR XP1000, with some slight internal modifications.

The XP1K cars are capable of speeds in excess of 90 mph.

We pulled out all the stops on XP1K – to make it as fun and authentic to watch as possible,” commented XP1K co-director and Mad Media COO Joshua Martelli. “We shot handheld, on sticks, on dollies, car to car, from helicopters…RC helicopters, used a ton of GoPro cameras – cranes, jibs, you name it… It was a lot of hard work - but the end result was worth it. This is the best off-road video we’ve seen in a long time. We’re very proud of it, and extremely grateful to RJ, Polaris, Falken, Walker, and all of our project partners for helping us make it happen. Shoot Facts •

Shooting took place at Eagle Mountain, during the hottest heat wave in 30 years. Temperatures soared to 127 degrees.

RJ Anderson jumped his vehicle 126 times without breaking a single part.

RJ Anderson’s helmet is an Impact Air Vapor safety helmet, custom painted by Troy Lee Designs.

RJ Anderson’s suit is a custom one-off by Oakley.

RJ Anderson’s harnesses are manufactured by Mastercraft Safety.

45 GoPro Hero 3’s were used. Six were destroyed beyond recognition.

The hill decent totaled 440ft at an angle of 45 degrees. RJ hit it a total of four times.

The mineshaft RJ jumped was over 80 feet deep.

The terrain varied radically from sand, silt, rock, concrete, iron pellets, scrap metal, wood, and pavement.

The entire crew stayed on site in abandoned houses that hadn’t been used since the mine closed in 1981.

Cameras had to be fitted with dry ice packs to keep them from shutting down.

The crew consumed over 5,000 bottles of water, and 60 bottles of pedialyte during the shoot.

Although the crew fought against heat stroke, multiple crewmembers succumbed to minor heat exhaustion and needed to take fluids intravenously.

Racer Tech Replacement Springs

Racer Tech RZR XP A-Arm Brace Kit

Racer Tech has been developing and producing spring replacement kits for various UTV models since 2007. With thousands of kits sold now they’ve proven to have a good set up. These springs replace the very poor OEM springs with these high quality U.S.A. made custom engineered springs. Racer Tech has pioneered a new type of dual rate spring design they call D.I.S.S. It’s a very unique design and it results in massive reduction in rear-end “bucking” and improves ride and handling at the same time. Racer Tech actually guarantees their springs are better than any other spring on the market. The best part is they are reasonably priced and get back that lost ride height too! They sell kits for all RZR models and recently released kits for all Can Am UTV’s as well.

Everyone knows the factory A-arms on all RZR’s are very weak and will bend extremely easily in different situations. Racer Tech has been a pioneer in the replacement A-arm market since the beginning of UTV’s. However, most of Replacement arm kits are more expensive than a lot of owners are looking to invest in their RZR. This innovative kit will bolt directly to your OEM RZR XP 900 front A-arms and substantially increase the strength of the inherently weak factory design. The kit consists of all the braces needed to cover all four of the front arms, both upper and lower. These braces add a cross sectional area of 5/16” which with greatly increase the torsional rigidity of the OEM A-arms. This kit can be installed in approximately 20 minutes by anyone with an allen wrench. These can be installed with all the suspension on the vehicle and with the machine sitting on the ground. The design of these parts is simple and so is the assembly. As always, this kits is 100% designed and produced in the U.S.A. with American steel.

For more info see www.RacerTech.com or call 616-928-0616.

Racer Tech Modular Roll Cage Replacement Kits Racer Tech has developed a new type of roll cage for the Polaris RZR. The new two piece design is modular and can be shipped via parcel service which eliminates the extra cost and troubles of truck freight. These roll cages are extremely strong and fit up directly to all RZR models from 08’-up 2 seat models including RZR 570,800and 900. There is also a kit which replaces the front and rear sections of the four seat cages on the 800 and 900 four seat RZR’s. The middle section is retained on the 4 seat versions. These roll cage sections will fit up to any OEM RZR roll cage section so the parts can be upgraded separately if desired. They are made in the U.S.A. from high quality U.S. tubing and are properly braced for extreme protection. The cages were designed to use many OEM and aftermarket accessories and are actually lower than OEM height.

SPOTLIGHT

I started this company from the love of manufacturing and racing like many do – In a garage, working late hours after a regular job. Although the machining that took place in the garage did not have the cool factor like many of the parts produced by Pro Armor today, I machined aerospace parts on a Bridgeport mill and old lathe. When the breaker would fry or the fuse would blow, that meant that the machines were really pumping out parts and that I should slow down a little… Manufacturing CNC parts continued to be a key role in my experiences and by 1990 I had accumulated a handful of well-known customers. By 1994 I was now supplying billet parts for GT bicycles and later that year a company would contract us for parts that would change everything. Yamaha Motor Company contacted us to develop billet accessories for their RoadStar Cruiser Motorcycle, Yamaha’s most popular Cruiser bike to date. Quickly after developing parts for the RoadStar, Yamaha requested parts developed for their Raptor 660 ATV project. The Raptor 660 was a revolutionary ATV at the time and creating the accessories for this bike opened our eyes to the possibility of aftermarket accessories, and others like it in the growing market. OEM’s continued to contact us to develop and manufacture their parts. We had built quite a good reputation with Yamaha, and that good reputation started traveling, and FAST. Soon we were an OEM supplier for all four large manufactures, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda. We also became a supplier to Polaris and Arctic Cat. In 2001 I took my knowledge and experience in developing and manufacturing quality accessories for the motorcycle and ATV market and decided to start my own brand, called: Pro Armor. I wanted to choose a name which portrays the durability and strength that goes into every product that Pro Armor was to produce. Pro Armor has always tested and raced the parts we develop and sell to the public. National Championships have been won almost every year since I Started Pro Armor using the same bullet proof parts which are made here. With names like Joe Byrd, Dustin Wimmer, Bill Ballance winning championships all running Pro Armor products. Racing has been an integral part of our business and continues to play a very important role in developing innovative and durable products.. It has been the steadfast commitment to developing only the very best components and making them with the utmost quality which has kept Pro Armor in the forefront of the industry. I want to thank you very much for thinking Pro Armor and believing in our brand, our quality and our commitment to you, our customer! Alex Danze , President/CEO
