Investment and organisational decisions Are you interested in how organisations function? Do you want to know how they reach correct investment decisions and how the management and staff can be motivated to create as much value as possible? A company needs a lot of knowledge if it is to make the correct organisational and financial decisions – and the one-year master's programme in Business Economics provides students with just that. The programme is a specialised degree course for students with a background in business economics who want to focus on organisational and financing issues. During their studies, they become skilled in analysing the internal functioning of organisations relative to financial, labour and product markets. This MSc programme combines in-depth theoretical study with practical applications.
The master’s programme in Business Economics offers three variants, each of which has its own clear professional profile. The variants are Finance, Organisational Economics, and Real Estate Finance. Finance The Finance variant focuses on the workings of financial markets, the financial and economic management of organisations, and the use of financial tools by companies and investors. The programme is built around a series of specialist modules. Students can choose from such subjects as commercial banking, corporate finance, investment theory, managing bond portfolio risks, financial markets and international

finance; they also take a research seminar. The master’s programme culminates in the writing of a dissertation. Organisational Economics The Organisational Economics variant focuses on the economic performance of organisations in broad terms. Subjects covered include staff motivation, how decision-making powers are allocated, investment decisions, corporate governance and how companies function in various types of market. The basis for this programme is the Economics of Organisation and Management module. The Faculty of Economics and Econometrics is one of the few economics faculties in Europe to offer a specialisation in Organisational Economics. Real Estate Finance Real Estate Finance is designed to provide advanced knowledge and training in the financial and economic aspects of commercial real estate. This specialized real estate programme draws on the university’s long established real estate studies in Amsterdam in conjunction with the real estate industry. Open to Dutch and foreign full-time students, the degree programme is taught in English and pursues an international perspective in its approach to real estate markets and finance as well as its student body.
Admission requirements A university degree (BSc) in Economics, Real Estate Finance, Business Economics or Business Administration is required for the Finance and for the Organisational Economics variant. Those with any other bachelor’s degree must have knowledge of micro-economics, macroeconomics, mathematics and statistics at foundationyear level. A command of Business Economics
equivalent to that provided by the core modules in Finance, Management Accounting and Compatible External Reporting is also required. A basic know-ledge of monetary and international economics is highly desirable.
Career prospects The Finance variant opens up a range of career opportunities, as every organisation needs university-trained experts in finance and economics. A graduate could become an all-round financial analyst, an investment adviser at a merchant bank or perhaps eventually the financial director of a company. The Organisational Economics variant prepares students for any management or research position that requires knowledge and understanding of economic thinking in respect of organisations or strategy. Such positions are manager, organisational adviser, management trainer, policy worker, remuneration consultant, strategic planner, etc.
