From Hbo to University Studying at the Faculty of Economics and Business For Hbo students who wish to start a pre-master’s programme at the Faculty of Economics and Business

Word of welcome Studying for a master’s degree is a big decision that can have a profound impact on your future. Since the quality of master’s degrees available in the international market varies widely, it is important that you get the choice right. It might come as no surprise to you that as dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Amsterdam I have no hesitation in recommending our programmes to you. I think we have an interesting portfolio of programmes offered by a prestigious university and taught by an internationally renowned faculty. The quality of our programmes reflects the reputation of the university. Furthermore, our courses are truly international in terms of staff, students and content. We also realise that the quality of our programmes is determined for a large part by the quality of our intake. Hence, our students are carefully selected. The quality is further controlled by internal and external assessments and accreditation processes. This ensures a high-quality and demanding curriculum as well as the official recognition of your degree at home and abroad. Finally, we are located in the fascinating, cosmopolitan cultural and business centre that is Amsterdam. This facilitates developing contacts and identifying internship possibilities and job prospects after graduation. In addition, it is nice to live in a tolerant and multicultural city you like and where living costs are reasonable. This brochure is meant to provide you with information on the university, the faculty and our pre-master’s programmes. You can obtain more information on our website and from our staff. All information given aimed at helping you in making the right decision. If in the end one of our programmes proves to be right for you and you are right for us we look forward to welcoming you at the University of Amsterdam. Tom Wansbeek Dean

University of Amsterdam University of Amsterdam The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is a modern university with a rich history. It was established in 1632 by the Amsterdam city council under the name Athenaeum Illustre. Today, the UvA has grown into a world-class research and teaching university. The university has seven major faculties, over 28,000 students and 5,000 staff. The University offers a wide range of courses, a top grade academic curriculum, inspiring surroundings and personal guidance. This combination enables UvA students to develop personally and intellectually. What it asks in return is that students learn as much as they can. To create an international environment of learning and creativity, the University of Amsterdam has always encouraged international cooperation. With over 2,500 international students and researchers from over 100 countries, the UvA provides ample opportunity to benefit from academic knowledge on a worldwide scale. The UvA does far more than prepare its students for the labour market. It is a place where talent is developed and people come into contact with differing and sometimes conflicting points of view. It is a university where students learn to think in an original, independent and academic way. It is a top UvA priority to serve

5

as breeding grounds for creative learning, nationally and internationally. In the field of academic research, the UvA has a reputation to uphold. The UvA is ranked 53rd in the World University Rankings (THES, 2008) and 5th in continental Europe. Furthermore, the UvA is the highest ranked university in the Netherlands. The lecturers incorporate today’s research results into tomorrow’s lectures. Since the UvA is in contact with universities all across the globe, virtually every student can do part of the curriculum abroad or meet students from all over the world in their Amsterdam classroom. The UvA is part of LERU, a network of renowned European research universities like Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Zurich, Leuven, Leiden and Edinburgh.

Economics and Business at the UvA The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) was established in 1922 and currently has around 4,000 students. The FEB provides a highlevel business curriculum with a strong academic basis for national and international undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students. The Faculty has an excellent reputation both in the Netherlands and around the world.

University of Amsterdam | Faculty of Economics and Business

Internationalisation is a keyword at the FEB. The staff, student body, degree programmes and research all have a strong international focus. The Faculty has also developed a worldwide network of academic partnerships, offering both a wide range of opportunities for our students and a global platform for the exchange of knowledge. All research and teaching within the FEB is organised in two schools: the Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE) and the Amsterdam Business School (ABS). They offer a highlevel curriculum with a strong academic basis for the national and international undergraduate and postgraduate market. Both schools aim to train students for careers in research and leading positions in the public or private sector. Its educational programme fosters the academic ideal of integrated research and teaching.

Accreditation All of our master’s programmes have been positively assessed by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). Upon completion of their master’s programme, students receive an accredited master’s degree.

In 2007, the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) awarded EQUIS accreditation to the ABS. The ABS is one of around 100 elite schools, including the London Business School, INSEAD and IMD, that have been awarded this accreditation worldwide. EFMD

Close cooperation with Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) The UvA offers a wide range of educational routes with tailor-made student guidance. In order to facilitate this, the UvA has been actively involved with the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA). The UvA and HvA have increasingly synchronised their student guidance facilities. This accommodates students in finding the right study path, and even switching their education courses if necessary. www.studeren.uva.nl/heaohbo

Characteristics of a pre-master’s programme Masters’ degree after Hbo The main goal at a Hbo course is obtaining professional competences. After receiving a Hbo bachelor’s degree, graduates can choose to start their careers. Many students however want to broaden their knowledge. The University of Amsterdam offers the opportunity to Hbo students to follow a master’s course after finishing their Hbo bachelor’s degree. Doing a master’s course after your Hbo means you will first follow a pre-master’s programme. Because of differences between a university bachelor’s programme and a Hbo bachelor’s programme a pre-master’s programme is specifically set up to prepare a student for the academic approach of a master’s programme. Every pre-master’s programme is tuned to the specific master’s programme that you wish to attend. The pre-master’s programmes offer a number of specific courses, programmed in such a way that you can complete the entire pre-master in one study year. During the admission procedure, the Examination Board will determine whether the Hbo study programme you followed fits the pre-master’s programme sufficiently.

7

Scope of the pre-master’s programme A pre-master’s programme takes one year to complete, as does the master’s programme when you register as a full-time student. This means that you would be able to complete the entire Master of science programme in two years.

Part-time For those who wish to combine work and study, the Amsterdam Business School’s Intensive Programmes may be an attractive option. These programmes offer opportunities to study on Fridays while working the rest of the week; thus combining theory and practice in study and work. The Master in Business Studies, MSc Accountancy and MSc Control offer intensive programmes. www.abs.uva.nl/mbs www.abs.uva.nl/ima

Danielle Oud After graduating I felt I didn’t have sufficient knowledge yet. At the HBO a lot of attention is given to practical subjects and less to theory. Because of this I wanted to go on studying, preferably in Amsterdam. After all, Amsterdam is a beautiful historical city and it is easily reached by public transport. I decided to do a pre-master’s in Business Economics, variant Finance, at the University of Amsterdam. The Roeterseiland, where the Faculty of Economics and Business is located, is very well reached by public transport and the pre-master fitted my wishes well. The course gives you the opportunity to decide how fast you want to go in your study. You can set your own pace. Another advantage of this programme is that you don’t have to get a full bachelor’s degree first. You only follow those bachelor’s courses which weren’t covered in your HBO programme. One of the biggest differences between studying at a HBO and at University is that at University you get more theory in a shorter period. I can now say that I know what studying is and I am sure I am gaining the knowledge I wished for.

The academic year The academic year is divided into two semesters. Each semester is then divided into two periods, for a total of four periods per academic year. At the completion of the semester, the student may (re-)take the exams for any of the courses given in the course of the semester. www.student.uva.nl/ecb

Course credits The course load is measured in credits, or ‘ECTS-credits’. The ECTS-credits, or European Credit Transfer System, is the European standard for course credits. The normal course load is 60 ECTScredits per academic year and 30 ECTS-credits per semester.

Master of Science degree (MSc) After successfully finishing your pre-master’s and master’s programme you will receive the title of Master of Science (MSc).

to working as accountants, graduates find a variety of positions including the functions of controller, financial director, information manager and consultant, with both commercial and not-for-profit organisations, or at regulatory bodies such as the Financial Markets Authority and De Nederlandsche Bank (Dutch Central Bank).

English language

The MSc Accountancy & Control has two tracks; one in Accountancy and one in Control.

The Accountancy track The Accountancy track is intended for students who seek a career in the financial sector. It is designed for students with a general and analytical interest in financial information flows between and within organisations and, more specifically, in providing information services to senior managers and other stakeholders, both internal and external. This track combines academic rigour with practical examples and applications, and provides admission to the PostMaster Accountancy (PMA) programme offered by the Amsterdam Business School (in Dutch only), leading to qualification as a chartered accountant (RA).

Career prospects

During your studies, you learn to look at various types of organisation from both a financial and an economic perspective. You acquire valuable knowledge, understanding, professional experience and expertise. As a result, your job prospects are excellent. In addition

10

www.feb.uva.nl/education

The Control track This track focuses on the role of accounting information in the financial management of organisations. How can financial and non-financial information be used to influence the decision making of managers and employees? The courses in this track aim to combine academic rigor and practical relevance. Therefore, they provide a multidisciplinary perspective,

Drs. Barry van der Leur Academic teacher Mathematics & Statistics and Financial & Actuarial Mathematics “What use are courses like Mathematics and Statistics?” This is a question asked frequently by students who have opted for a transfer to the University after a completed education at an institute for higher vocational training (HBO). Just a few months later, though, after having been confronted with other courses, the relevance of Mathematics and Statistics becomes increasingly clear. The so named quantitative methods enable us to express all kinds of economic and management models in a precise and unambiguous way. By using quantitative methods, people learn to account for their own research results as well as for those of others, and to estimate the value of these results. The expression: “statements and findings without theory and data are just another opinion” certainly applies here. Experience has taught us that students who make the transfer from HBO to the university are very motivated students - students who after the ‘how’ of things, who are interested in the ‘why’ of things. They are students who after more profound knowledge.

integrating insights from economics, psychology and organisation theory. Consequently, graduates have a unique knowledge base that consists of specialised knowledge in the fields of finance and accounting and a thorough understanding of how accounting information can be used to manage real-world organisations. The track provides admission to the UvA Executive Master of Finance and Control (EMFC) program (taught in Dutch). MSc Control

11

graduates with at least two years of work experience may also consider entering the international Executive Master of Finance and Control (iEMFC) program (taught in English, admission restrictions apply). Career prospects

Your chances of finding interesting work are outstanding. Positions open to Control graduates vary from controller to financial director; jobs in which you are responsible for the

financial and general management of organisations. If you have a broad interest in issues related to organisation, accounting and financing, then working as a controller will appeal to you. Controllers are often the spider in the web: they have to be able to form and express an opinion about almost all the organisation’s activities. Pre-master Control track: www.studeren.uva.nl/heaohbo

Master of Science in Business Economics

English language

The Finance track

The MSc Business Economics is a one-year programme. The curriculum consists of 60 European Credits. The MSc Business Economics consists of three tracks, two of which are offered as a pre-masters’s programme; the Finance- and the Real Estate Finance track.

The Finance track concentrates upon the workings of financial markets, the financial and economic management of organisations and the use of financial tools by companies and investors. The programme is built around a series of specialist modules on commercial banking, corporate finance, investment theory, managing bond portfolio risks, financial markets, international finance and other relevant topics

The Real Estate Finance track The Real Estate Finance track is designed to provide advanced knowledge and training in the financial and economic aspects of commercial real estate. Real estate is a specialist discipline, covering the development, financing and operation of real estate. This track links academic scholarship to industrial practice, thanks to the University’s collaboration with the industry. Career prospects

Career prospects

The Finance track provides for a range of career opportunities. Many organisations need university-trained experts in finance and economics. Graduates can become all-round financial analysts, investment advisors or even financial directors. Typical organisations our students work for include banks and commercial firms, but also governmental agencies and NGOs. Pre-master Finance track: www.studeren.uva.nl/heaohbo

The Real Estate Finance track is ideal for those students seeking a career in the real estate and related finance industries (asset manager, securitization specialist, stock analyst, appraiser, consultant, acquisition analyst, project manager, credit analyst, international property broker). This track gives graduates a definite advantage in their future careers, since they will know how to analyse both quantitative and qualitative characteristics of commercial property assets as managed within a dynamic business environment. Master of Science in Business Studies

English language

The MSc in Business Studies The Master of Science in Business Studies trains students to analyse complex organizational issues and to produce well thought out solutions to address them. This requires not only a thorough knowledge of specialist business literature, but also the ability to apply that knowledge in practice. Business Studies takes a multidisciplinary approach to organisational issues in context. Analyses and solutions that are perfectly rational when considered in the framework of a given disciplinary area - such as economics, psychology, sociology or political science - will almost always have unexpected repercussions in other areas of the organisation. By viewing issues in a coordinated, plural and managerial way, their consequences can be mapped coherently.

Students can choose between the following seven areas of specialisation: ■ C ultural Industries ■ E ntrepreneurship ■ G overnance and Valuation ■ H uman Resource Management ■ I nformation Management ■ M arketing ■ S trategy and Organization Career prospects

Graduates are exceptionally well suited to positions in which business analysis and reflection are applied towards making strategic and operational contributions to the functioning, improvement and renewal of commercial and noncommercial organizations. Examples of careers include internal or external organizational consultant, policy officer, project leader, HRM manager, information analyst, product manager and marketing manager Pre-master Business Studies track: www.studeren.uva.nl/heaohbo

Jan Konstapel I am Jan Konstapel, 26 years old and studying at the UvA. After graduating in Business Economics at the HBO in Arnhem, I began working as a controller. I went to the Master’s Fair in Utrecht and learned about the UvA’s pre-master programmes. After working for a year I decided to quit my job: I wanted to integrate more knowledge of finance and especially mathematics in my work. I decided to do the Master in Finance of Real Estate. It was the combination of finance and real estate, a combination of two worlds I love. The pre-master consists of quite a lot of courses, which together lead up to writing your final thesis. Statistics are a big part of the pre-master’s year. I will need this for my favourite course (investments) later on, which will deal with constructing the optimal portfolio and option techniques. After finishing the basic courses in the pre-master, you start with the Real Estate courses in the Master year. After my graduation I would like to work in the real estate business. ING real estate or DTZ Zadelhoff are interesting employers. But who knows? Maybe I will start working at an investment bank.

Master of Science in Fiscal Economics

Dutch language

The Fiscal Economics track

The Tax Compliance track

The MSc Fiscal Economics consists of two tracks: the Fiscal Economics track and the Tax Compliance track

The one-year Master of Science in Fiscal Economics offers an integrated combination of fiscaljudicial and fiscal-economics courses, to educate the student as an all-round fiscalist. The study programme concentrates on the study of tax law from an economic perspective. It offers knowledge and insight into both the national and international economic situation and opinions.

The Tax Compliance track of the MSc Fiscal Economics course offers an integrated combination of fiscaljudicial and fiscal-economics courses, to educate the student as a fiscalist working in the field of Tax Compliance. If students opt for an extended duration of the study, they have the opportunity to include two work periods in their study programme. Career prospects

Career prospects

Graduates usually find work in fiscal law practice, at tax consultancy firms or sometimes at the Tax and Customs Administration. Also opportunities exist to work as a corporate fiscalist or in the central government or within the academic world. Pre-master Fiscal Economics track:

Graduates find work in fiscal law practice after graduation, but also in the Tax Compliance departments of tax consultancy firms. Despite the increased influence of automation in Tax Compliance at tax consultancies, the demand for fiscalists with an MSc in Tax Compliance still increases, as computer programs still cannot deal with the most complex tax returns.

Master of Science in Operations Research and Management

Only for Hbo Business Mathematics

Operations Research and Management (ORM) focuses on concrete questions usually of an operational, managerial or logistic nature and for which quantitative and therefore numerical support is sought. Operations Research and Management focuses on recognizing and resolving practical problems by using mathematical modelling and through the application of optimisation techniques. This makes that the nature of the MSc in Operations Research and Management degree programme is strongly mathematical as well as practical. You can think of practical questions like: ■ W hat should be the volume of my production, and what should be its composition? ■ H ow many phone operators are needed in a call-centre? ■ W hich routes are efficient? ■ H ow to analyse a complex production process, a construction project or a service centre (e.g., a bank, a post office, the check-in desks at Schiphol Airport) in a short period of time by using the computer?

15

Career prospects

In general, the business community highly appreciates the students’ quantitative, analytical and critical outlook. Therefore, the students’ perspective as to job opportunities is excellent. Graduates with an MSc in Operations Research and Management are employed as quantitative or logistics consultants

in a wide range of companies or consultancy firms, both in manufacturing and in the services industry: ■ i n manufacturing industry ■ i n companies like KLM, NS, in the transport sector or in healthcare (hospitals) ■ i n the financial services industry (banks, financial institutions) ■ i n the logistics services industry or in transport and distribution

Other master’s programmes

The Faculty of Economics and Business offers many other master’s programmes. There is no separate pre-master’s track for these master’s programmes. This means that it will take longer to obtain your master’s degree in one of these areas than in the master’s programmes with a pre-master’s programme. Many Hbo students choose to follow one of these master’s programmes at the FEB. Examples include students who graduated in Business Mathematics or Business and Computer Science, or have specialised in logistics at the Traffic and Transport Academy. If you wish to follow one of these master’s programmes, you should start with the corresponding bachelor’s programme. It is possible to apply for exemptions for courses in the bachelor’s programme, if you have already completed courses of the same level and content as those offered at the FEB. Please make an appointment with one of the student advisers at the FEB if you are interested in one of these master’s programmes.

Drs. Rob van Hemert Academic Skills teacher As the Skills Group coordinator, I meet and see lots of different students. The students in a pre-master’s track (‘schakelstudenten’) are exceptionally motivated and very friendly. It is necessary for them to be this motivated as right from the first week on they have to dive deep into their Research Methods text book and articles from specialist management journals. They then have to critically review an article and a report in an academic way. The course MR1 is one of the first courses of the pre-master’s programme, and it is a good example of putting ‘new’ knowledge into practice. Personally, I think the pre-master’s programme is very well suited for students with a completed higher vocational education who still want more (more knowledge, more out of their career) and who are up for a challenge.
