Put your knowledge to the test Doing an internship is an ideal way to put knowledge into practice and to prepare for a career after your studies. Besides, relevant work experience gives you just that extra that companies are looking for! And not unimportant: It is possible to incorporate an internship in your studies. Doing an internship is possible in both the bachelor’s and the master’s programme.
The internship must comprise at least 400 hours. Master’s thesis internship This is a research internship you can do in combination with writing your master thesis. In this case, no ec’s can be earned for

Kind of internships Elective internship This is a research or tag-along internship at the academic level comprising at least 280 hours during your bachelor. The internship can be incorporated in your study programme as an elective (10 ec’s) and can be done during the Economics and Business bachelor programme. Bachelor’s thesis internship This is a research internship you can do in combination with writing your bachelor thesis. In this case, no ec’s can be earned for the internship itself. Rather, the internship serves as a basis for your thesis.
‘An internship is a way for students to gain practical knowledge and experience in the workplace. It can also be a source of valuable information for academic research such as a Master’s thesis, as it was in my case. Finding an internship can be challenging, but there are a lot of opportunities because many large international corporations have an office in the Netherlands. This summer, my internship enabled me to enhance my knowledge in the field of marketplace merchandising in the apparel industry. Exploring the corporate organisation process also improved my personal competencies and contributed to my professional development.’

the internship itself. Rather, the internship serves as a basis for your thesis. The internship must comprise at least 400 hours.
Internships in the bachelor In the Economics and Business bachelor it is possible to do both an elective internship and a bachelor’s thesis internship.
Internships in the master’s programme In all FEB’s master’s programmes, it is possible to do a master’s thesis internship.
Search and find An internship is a great opportunity to learn more than theories written in books. However, it is not always easy to find one. It involves time and effort. Being able to speak some Dutch is definitely an asset when looking for an internship. Just bear in mind that looking for an internship is already a valuable experience in itself!
Oswald Hoogeveen Bachelor’s thesis internship, MHI Equipment Europe B.V. Mitsubishi (MEE) ‘I have learned a lot during my internship. For example, before I started the internship I did not know which direction I would choose after graduation. This internship made clear to me that my interest would be strategy and that became my goal. At this moment I am doing the Master’s in Business Studies strategy track while finishing my thesis. I decided to do my second internship because I wanted to gain working experience to complement my studies. My second internship was at the Business Development & Strategy department of RTL Nederland. I have taken part several projects that include developing market research, inventing concepts for websites and formulating business plans. Finishing my thesis will probably take a bit longer because RTL Nederland offered me a permanent position.’

‘I find an internship is a perfect opportunity to practically combine theory in a business environment. Real, immediate and applicable situations allow you to better grasp the fundamentals of often confusing theoretical frameworks and models. Not only did the freedom and guidance during my internship at Synovate give me better insight and understanding of the theoretical knowledge I already had, it allowed me to gain valuable experience in participating in the functioning of daily business activities. For an UvA third year elective course, I strongly recommend an internship to all students wishing to gain insight and experience in practical applications of theoretical frameworks in a business environment.’
