We’ve had many firsts on campus this fall, and this edition of The UVa-Wise Magazine captures some of the inaugural moments. Our $30 million Convocation Center continues to receive attention throughout the region. Alumni and friends are astounded when they first enter the facility and are surrounded by the open space that actually feels warm and welcoming as the beautiful architectural features soften the building. We are proud of our Convocation Center, and we invite everyone to attend many of the events in the facility as it celebrates its first year of operation. The UVa-Wise volleyball squad was the first sports team to compete in the facility. Merry Lu and I joined 600 fans for the inaugural match in the Convocation Center. The energy level was fantastic and the Cavalier fans were loud and proud as the women took the court for the first time. It was truly a moment that we will treasure for a lifetime. Only one person could be the first performer in the Convocation Center: Joseph “Papa Joe” Smiddy, our first chancellor. He took the stage with the Reedy Creek Band in early October. Papa Joe’s former students, his friends, family and fans were treated to a fine concert featuring some beloved songs. Many of our students saw the Virginia legend perform for the first time. Then award-winning performer and fiddler Natalie Stovall and her band entertained the crowd in what rounded out a wonderful evening and another first for UVa-Wise. This edition will also feature our first Contracting Ceremony for two students, twin sisters, who received ROTC scholarships. Upon completion of their academic degrees in nursing and the ROTC program, they will be commissioned as officers at the rank of Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. It is another proud first for UVa-Wise. Football fans enjoyed a first this season as our Cavaliers defeated rival Emory & Henry College in a game that has already made it into local sports lore. Thousands of fans watched as Cavaliers Marcus Bratten and Josh Wright combined to make a spectacular punt return touchdown with no time remaining on the clock. The touchdown, which is now known simply as “The Play” was seen by thousands of people on various Internet sites and watched by even more when it aired nationwide on ESPN. We reached an important milestone in late October as we celebrated the success of our “Fulfilling the Dream” campaign. During this five-year campaign, we exceeded our goal of $50 million. The campaign continues until the end of December 2011, and your support allows us to continue our mission to provide a quality, affordable and accessible education to students from our region and beyond. Richard and Leslie Gilliam Foundation funds UVa-Wise Health and Wellness Center Richard and Leslie Gilliam, natives of Southwest Virginia, recently pledged $8.3 million for a new Health and Wellness Center and renovations to Greear Gymnasium to house the Healthy Appalachia Institute at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Richard, a native of Wise, is a 1974 graduate of UVaWise and Leslie is from Jonesville, Va. Their generous gift, will provide both a new addition to the fitness center and the renovation of 5,833 square feet of the Fred B. Greear Gymnasium. The health and wellness center and improvements to Greear Gymnasium will leverage the work of the Healthy Appalachia Institute, helping students and residents of Southwest Virginia embrace a healthier lifestyle. “The strong commitment that Richard and Leslie Gilliam have shown to UVa-Wise and Southwest Virginia will have a tremendous impact on the health of our students and residents of our region,” Chancellor David J. Prior said. The gift to UVa-Wise is one example of how Richard and Leslie Gilliam are supporting projects to improve the quality of life in the coalfield region. Richard was founder and CEO of Cumberland Resources, one of the region’s top coal companies, which was purchased by Massey Energy in April 2010. For many years, Richard and Leslie have been supporters of Southwest Virginia communities and continue to believe passionately about giving back to the region. The Gilliams agreed to the announcement of this gift in the hopes that others who have benefited from natural resource businesses in the region might also consider a gift. “My wife Leslie and I are delighted to help provide UVaWise with new facilities for fitness,” Richard Gilliam said. “Our goal is to provide for UVa-Wise in a way that will assist the school in attracting and retaining students and to support and

encourage a healthy lifestyle for students.” Construction of the Health and Wellness Center will add 11,000 square feet to the current fitness facility. The center will house a new exercise area, a multipurpose room for yoga, Pilates, dance and other activities, two conference rooms for individual and group health advising and instruction, and locker rooms. The renovation to portions of Greear Gymnasium will feature a new entry and refurbished restrooms and locker rooms. “Leslie and I believe that exercise and healthy habits are essential to a quality life,” Gilliam said. “We hope that students and others throughout the area will be impacted by the Healthy Appalachia Institute as the organization works to improve the health and well being of families across Southwest Virginia.”

UVa-Wise receives $185,000 from Slemp Foundation The University of Virginia’s College at Wise received a $185,000 gift from the C. Bascom Slemp Foundation to fund undergraduate research, support an innovative opera program and to enhance study of the Civil War’s unique impact on Southwest Virginia. “Through its longstanding partnership with the college, the C. Bascom Slemp Foundation continues to transform lives in the region,” UVa-Wise Chancellor David J. Prior said. “This year’s gift is another example of the foundation’s support of our college, and I am delighted that the trustees have invested in three of our most innovative programs.” A $100,000 Slemp Foundation gift will fund the college’s “Appalachian 2 UVa-Wise Magazine

Warfare” program. As Virginia celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War through 2015, the funds from the Slemp Foundation will allow the college to create a series of programs that reflect the uniqueness of the region. “Appalachian Warfare” will engage faculty, students and community members residing in the coalfields about the Civil War as it transpired in southwestern Virginia. Over the five year commemoration, the college will annually bring preeminent scholars to campus to discuss the lasting outcomes of the Civil War in the region. The foundation also provided $60,000 to create the C. Bascom Slemp Fund for Undergraduate Research. The college has students completing substantial

undergraduate research projects in various disciplines, and this new fund will allow it to expand its existing program to include software engineering, social sciences, math and the humanities. Creation of the C. Bascom Slemp Fund for Undergraduate Research will enable more field research in archival and scientific settings, provide resources for students to present the outcomes of their research at academic conferences and provide support for faculty members to mentor and guide the research of UVa-Wise students. Finally, building on two years of success, the Slemp Foundation awarded $25,000 to support the college’s Southwest Virginia Summer Opera Company.

UVa-Wise receives Dominion Foundation grant The University of Virginia’s College at Wise received a $30,000 grant from the Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion, which will provide water quality education opportunities in the city of Norton. The grant was among $1 million awarded by the foundation to institutions of higher education this year in seven states where Dominion conducts business. Representatives of UVa-Wise received the award at an Aug. 16 luncheon at the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center that Dominion is building at St Paul. “Dominion is privileged to support college-level learning,” said Virginia M. Board, president of the Dominion Foundation. “We are particularly interested in funding action-oriented projects that produce results in energy conservation and the preservation of the environment.” Norton plans to build a 1.25 mile River Walk along the Guest River, which will serve as a riparian buffer to prevent the

runoff of sediment and pollutants from industrial, commercial and residential property bordering the river’s banks. Construction of the River Walk will provide UVa-Wise an opportunity to help fulfill part of its mission, which is to help lead efforts in regional environmental stewardship. With the aid of the Dominion grant, UVa-Wise students will conduct a one-year preliminary study of the area proposed for the River Walk. Students will conduct a biodiversity survey of the project area, including an assessment of soil and water quality. “We are thrilled to partner with the Dominion Foundation on this important project,” said UVa-Wise Chancellor David J. Prior. “It will create an outdoor classroom in Southwest Virginia that will provide opportunities for UVa-Wise students and faculty to join K-12 students, teachers and parents in work that is educational, environmentally responsible

and socially engaging.” Dominion, its charitable foundation and its employees last year donated $24 million and more than 150,000 volunteer hours in programs that helped improve the quality of life for people in the states in which Dominion operates. The Dominion Foundation’s focus areas include preservation of natural resources, work force development and education, diversity initiatives, neighborhood and community development, and basic needs for food and shelter. Dominion is one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy, with a portfolio of approximately 28,200 megawatts of generation. Dominion operates the nation’s largest gas storage system and serves retail energy customers in 15 states. For more information about Dominion, visit the company’s website at www.dom.com.

UVa-Wise keeps pace with rapidly expanding use of telehealth The use of telehealth services is expanding rapidly in southwestern Virginia, and Verizon is helping The University of Virginia’s College at Wise lead the way by keeping its nursing curriculum current with the technology. A $20,000 Verizon Foundation grant is funding the development of one of Virginia’s first telehealth nursing curricula at the Department of Nursing at UVaWise. The project is a partnership among UVa-Wise, the Healthy Appalachia Institute and the University of Virginia Office of Telemedicine. Telehealth is emerging as a critical resource, enabling care to be provided to patients in rural locations such as Southwest Virginia by increasing access to specialty consultations, providing home monitoring, and helping to reduce significant workforce shortages in primary and specialty health care fields. The project’s goal is to prepare nurses with the knowledge and skills required to maximize the use of emerging and

evolving telehealth technologies to improve health care access and services. The project also includes a regional telehealth symposium for practicing health care professionals, which will address crucial topics such as the ways in which telemedicine fits into patient and community health care and the emerging uses of telehealth. In addition, other Virginia colleges and universities will be able to use the UVa-Wise telenursing curriculum once it’s developed. “We are so appreciative of Verizon’s support to help us better prepare our nursing students to use telehealth in the effective management of chronic disease, screening for diabetic retinopathy and other health care concerns,” said Cathleen Collins, chair of the UVa-Wise Department of Nursing. “This will greatly benefit the health outcomes of our citizens.” “Verizon and its employees are part of the fabric of the communities we serve, and we champion efforts to

apply technology to meet challenges such as rural health care,” said B. Keith Fulton, Verizon Virginia vice presidentgovernment affairs. “The UVa-Wise telenursing curriculum will build the skill set that will help health care professionals provide improved access to health care services in the most rural areas of Virginia.” In addition to its foundation support of telehealth-related programs such as those in Southwest Virginia, Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions offers a comprehensive portfolio of managed, information technology and consulting services for the health care industry to help transform patient care delivery, enhance access to care and better manage costs. The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, uses its technology, financial resources and partnerships to address critical social issues, with a focus on education and domestic violence prevention.

William and Sofia Starnes endow UVa-Wise scholarship William H. Starnes, Jr. and Sofia M. Starnes have established an endowed scholarship at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise to benefit an entering freshman each year who graduated from Thomas Walker High School. Mr. Starnes is a 1950 graduate of Thomas Walker High, Lee County’s smallest high school. A graduate of Virginia Tech, he is recognized as one of fewer than 1,000 people in the world who have had the greatest impact on the history of plastics. Much of his work involved the creation of synthetic polymers and the polyvinyl chloride, the PVC that is used in various materials. The Gottwald Professor of Chemistry at the College of William and Mary retired in 2006, but he and his wife, the poet Sofia Starnes, have kept busy in many charitable endeavors. He is the only scientist among the charter inductees of the Southwest Virginia Walk of Fame at the Southwest Virginia Museum in Big Stone Gap. Mrs. Starnes is poetry editor of “The Anglican Theological Review” and critique editor of “Creative Writing Critiques.” She holds a master’s degree in English philology from the University of Madrid. She is the author of “The Soul’s Landscape,” “A Commerce of Moments,” “Corpus Homini: A Poem for Single Flesh” and “Fully Into Ashes.”

She is the recipient of a Poetry Fellowship from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Rainer Maria Rilke Poetry Prize, the Marlboro Review Editor’s Prize and a Conference on Christianity and Literature Poetry Prize. “I am not an alumnus of the school, but I am from Southwest Virginia,” he said. “I really think it is very desirable for people who are from our region to support higher education in Southwest Virginia.” Mr. Starnes said if people from the region do not take steps to support higher education by providing scholarships, for example, it seems unreasonable to expect others from outside the region to offer their support. “Sofia and I feel the scholarship will help the region and is helping a school that really has the resources to make enormous strides in coming years to help the region and the students who call it home,” Starnes said. There are many quality schools that serve the region, but Mr. Starnes said UVa-Wise has the best potential to serve the area because it is part of the University of Virginia system. “I am particularly pleased with how things are going at UVaWise,” he said. “We are impressed by what is going on at the college.”

BOV approves Lelia Maude Beaty Richmond Professorship in Business One of UVa-Wise’s most cherished benefactors has been honored with the establishment of an endowed professorship in her name. The University of Virginia Board of Visitors approved a resolution in June 2011 to establish the Lelia Maude Beaty

Richmond Professorship in Business at UVa-Wise. In approving the measure, the BOV expressed its gratitude to Mrs. Richmond’s family and friends, including her daughter Billy Richmond Allen, for their generosity in creating the endowed professorship.

“Lelia Maude Beaty Richmond’s family and friends decided to create a professorship in her name at the College at Wise to pay tribute to her extraordinary and longtime support of the College at Wise,” the resolution states. Mrs. Richmond passed away in 2002 at the age of 98. Her generosity and support of UVa-Wise is legendary. She was an avid fan of the Cavaliers football program. The field at the Carl Smith Stadium is named after Mrs. Richmond. Academic excellence was also important to Mrs. Richmond. She created two professorships at UVa-Wise. One was created in honor of her father, the Honorable John Morton Beaty who served in the Virginia Senate, and the other in honor of Kenneth Asbury, a longtime family friend. Sharon Lechter urges FBLA members to become financially aware Bestselling author Sharon Lechter challenged the region’s Future Business Leaders of America to take control of their personal finances so they can thrive rather than “dive into debt.” Lechter is a certified public accountant, entrepreneur, international speaker, mother and grandmother. She is also a national spokesperson for the AICPA for financial literacy and was a member of the first President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy and founder of Pay Your Family First and YOUTHpreneur. She was the guest speaker during Napoleon Hill Day, held on Oct. 24 on the UVa-Wise campus. She spoke to the students after Don Green, executive director of the Napoleon Hill Foundation, announced that Chief Poly Ike Emenike, an entrepreneur, industrialist, philanthropist and respected Nigerian community leader, recently gave the Napoleon Hill Foundation $100,000 to use for educational purposes. Emenike is the chairman and chief executive officer of a group of companies, including NEROS Pharmaceuticals. “There are 77 million of you in America,” she told the teens. “You are bigger than us. You are absolutely going to turn the world in a better direction if you lead and not follow.”

Lechter said the successful formula is to simply spend less than you earn. She recalled reading Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” when she was a teenager. The book and Hill’s philosophy changed her life, she said. “It helped me create success in my life,” Lechter said. “Think and Grow Rich” allowed her to better understand and see opportunity, she added. She started her own company at age 25 and later created a women’s magazine. In 1987, she recognized a market for talking books for children and created a successful book series. “There is always a way for you to change the world the way you want to change it,” she said. In 1991, when she was raising teenagers, she realized that teens were not getting a good financial education. She decided to dedicate her life to raising financial awareness for children and families. “I did all of that because of “Think and Grow Rich,” she said. The nation’s economy tanked in 2007, yet the country did not wake up and take financial responsibility, she told the students. during the Great Depression stand as a good lesson today, she said. “It’s the term paper of success,” she said. The education system today needs to change so there is more experimental learning and less memorization, she said. The education system should give students credit for what they already know, she said. “We need to let our young people lead, not follow,” she said. Her latest books released in cooperation with the Napoleon Hill Foundation include, “Three Feet from Gold” and “Outwitting the Devil.”

Virginia Oil and Gas Association funds UVa-Wise scholarship The Virginia Oil and Gas Association is giving back to Southwest Virginia by endowing a scholarship at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Contributions from private individuals as well as local gas producers doing business in Southwest Virginia were given to endow the scholarship. The generous gift will allow the awarding of scholarships to deserving students at UVa-Wise. Preference will be given to applicants who are employed by the oil and gas industry or dependents of those employed by the industry. “We wanted to give back to the people of Southwest Virginia,” VOGA member Lawton Mullins said. “Endowing a scholarship for deserving UVa-Wise students whose families work hard to meet Virginia’s energy needs seemed

appropriate.” Donations to establish the scholarship came from Mullins, Appalachian Energy, CONSOL Energy’s CNX Gas Virginia Operations, EQT, Range Resources and others. Formed in 1977, the Virginia Oil and Gas Association is a non-profit trade association representing the interests of companies, partnerships, individuals or other entities having an interest in the oil and gas industry and who are primarily engaged in the exploration, production, development, transportation and distribution of natural gas and oil in Virginia. Its purpose is to promote the Virginia natural gas and oil industry through education of its members and the general public.

Several UVa-Wise students and faculty traveled to Ecuador in May to participate in the “Evolution and Adventure in Ecuador” summer study abroad program. The program gave students a unique opportunity to approach Charles Darwin’s theory by visiting the Galapagos Islands. They also enjoyed a total Spanish immersion trip as they visited with Ecuador’s people and ventured into the local environment. They soon learned that Ecuador is one of the most biological diverse countries in the world. Quito, Ecuador’s capital, was the first city to be declared a world treasure by the United Nations. Madison Savarese says her visit to Ecuador was a once in a lifetime experience for her and her fellow classmates. She captured her visit in both photos and words. “I never thought that I would have had the opportunity to journey to Ecuador, but because of hard work, my family and UVa-Wise, I was able to take this incredible journey,” Savarese said. “Being in Ecuador gave me an incredible appreciation for so many things in life. The beauty of Ecuador blew me away when we landed in Quito. All the buildings were lit up as if they were welcoming us to their country.” Her appreciation of the South American nation grew with each day of the two-week visit. “The raw beauty of the country captivated my attention,” she added. “Volcanoes, rainforests, mountains, waterfalls, and last but not least, the Galapagos. The country always seemed to catch my attention.” She and her classmates found themselves jumping from one side of the bus to the other as they jockeyed for the best photograph of the new and exciting places they visited.

Although the beauty of the nation and its environment were captivating, Savarese said it was easy to appreciate the simplicity of the culture. “In Ecuador everyone made the products they sold, and they were never extravagant and overpriced,” she said. “Family businesses were everywhere and everyone had something to offer.” The UVa-Wise travelers soon bonded, she said. “The students and faculty worked together to learn and build better friendships,” Savarese said. “The citizens of Ecuador were welcoming and kind to us, and unlike in many Hollywood movies, I never felt threatened.” She returned home with a new appreciation for Ecuador and simple living. UVa-Wise offers many study abroad programs each year. Savarese urges her fellow students to consider taking advantage of the opportunity. “I think that many students overlook Photos by David J. the opportunity to study abroad through the school,” she said. “I know that I did. I will continue to work hard to ensure that I will be able to study abroad again while getting my education at UVa-Wise.”

Kandace Kilgore ’10 might have you beat when it comes to comparing summer vacations. The Scott County teacher got extensive marine biology training, the Florida sunshine, and she got to kiss a movie star. No. it wasn’t Brad Pitt or George Clooney. This one had rubbery skin, an elongated snout, and a sideways glance that’s easy on the eyes and melts your heart. Clearwater Marine Aquarium invited Kilgore to intern at their grounds and surrounding waterway. That facility happens to be the home of Winter, the dolphin on the cusp of superstardom after Warner Brothers’ “Dolphin Tale” opens this weekend. This marine romance began when Kilgore first saw the mammal in a movie theater earlier this year. Winter’s tale “I went to see ‘Soul Surfer,’ and the trailer for ‘Dolphin Tale’ appeared before the movie. It moved me so much I cried,” said Kilgore, a second-year kindergarten teacher at Duffield Primary School. Touched by that brief preview on the silver screen, Kilgore got home that night and dove into research about Winter – saved by a fisherman and marine staffers in Mosquito Lagoon near Cape Canaveral in 2005 when she was two months old. “She got tangled in this crab trap line, and basically, her mother left her there because she thought she wouldn’t survive,” said Kilgore, who learned about Winter’s legend online and firsthand. Because the line cut the blood flow to her tail, it fell off and left the young dolphin with two alternatives – learn a new way to swim with an artificial tail developed by a Florida prosthetics company or an early death. Six years of training and TLC has

Winter swimmingly happy in her new home and becoming an inspiration to others, as Kilgore learned during her summer getaway. Mornings with Winter Moments after she “Googled” Winter, Kilgore clicked over to her rehab home, hoping for internship opportunities. “They still had internships available, and I thought that would be awesome. Being a teacher, I have summers off, so I sent my résumé and applied, and I got in,” said Kilgore. They placed her in the education division with her teaching experience, and she would work with kids camps and other aquarium outreach. But before the facility would open each day, Kilgore shared the sunrise with her favorite little girl. “We wear these blue staff T-shirts, so she knew who you were,” said Kilgore. “She turns and looks at you sideways to see who you are, and it is just adorable. She’s still little, and they have her in a tank with a 40-year-old dolphin – kind of her adoptive mom. Most of these animals have had something happen to them and cannot be released back into the wild. “I would go in there, and it was just us. She would make these noises, like she was singing to you. I could only get so close, but she would recognize me and just stare at you. Moments like that are amazing. That is what time with Winter was like. She is a hero.”

Kandace Kilgore ’10 Splashing up Support Kilgore has been working as a onewoman press agent for Winter these days, sharing he experiences with Winter to drum up box office business for “Dolphin Tale.” “I’m going to tell my students about my time with her, using that in the classroom to teach them,” she said. “I hope that the kids’ parents take them to the movie.” It will be one of several movie houses premiering the film, which stars Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson. “That was all the buzz (in Clearwater) this summer, the movie,” said Kilgore. “When you see the movie, that is Winter not a CGI dolphin. Bobinski twins contract with ROTC Patriotism has always been a strong part of the Bobinski family, so it was no surprise to their father when his twin daughters announced plans to become U.S. Army nurses. “I am so proud of my girls,” said Peter Bobinski, general counsel to Kellogg, Brown & Root, after watching Morgan and Taylor pledge to enter the U.S. Army as 2nd lieutenants once they successfully complete their academic degrees and the ROTC program at UVa-Wise. “The fact that they want to serve their country is so important. I just can’t say enough about them.” The women started their clinical work at UVa-Wise in late October. They are also enjoying their military science coursework. Both have a level of maturity that is highlighted each time they dress in their military gear and participate in various training exercises. “It is the right thing to do,” Morgan said. “I want to serve my country.” Taylor echoed her sister’s comments. “I feel very good about my choice,” she said. “I know this is where I want to be and I know that this is what I want to do.” UVa-Wise has half a dozen students contracted to become U.S. Army officers, but the twins are the first nursing students,” said 1st Lt. Martin Asirif of UVa-Wise’s ROTC program. Asirif said the college has doubled its number of contracted cadets in less than a year, a remarkable feat for a young program. “It is another step in our growth,” he said. “We’ve gone from two contracted cadets to six contracted cadets. That is a good sign.” The contracting ceremony solidifies the cadets’ scholarships, which includes free tuition, books and a stipend. Upon completion of their academic degree and the ROTC program, they will be officers following a Commissioning Ceremony held during the UVa-Wise Commencement. They then are committed to four years

of active duty and two years in the U.S. Army Reserves. Chancellor David J. Prior attended the Contracting Ceremony. He is looking forward to the Commissioning Ceremony when the women graduate. He has attended other ceremonies at other colleges during his career, and each one is special. “It is a strong, emotional ceremony,” he said. “The students take their oaths of office and they emerge as military officers. It is an unforgettable moment for all who attend.”

Mullis gives back by volunteering at RAM 2011 Those who know Amanda Mullis ’10 will not be surprised that the medical student spent three long days volunteering in the sweltering heat at the Remote Area Medical free health clinic in July. Those who know her well will not be surprised to note that she was smiling constantly as she helped her share of the nearly 2,500 patients from all over the east coast who lined up early to receive medical, dental and vision care. Mullis is in her second year as a medical student at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. “I felt like I needed to come home and give back to the area that gave me so much,” Mullis said as she stood outside a mobile healthcare unit at the Wise County Fairgrounds on the first day of the clinic. The crowd gathered a day or two before the clinic opened because hundreds of working people who have no insurance often rely on the medical, dental and vision

care they receive from RAM. Mullis spent Thursday evening catching up with friends at a Norton restaurant, but got up early to volunteer for the Healthwagon. Mullis was glad to put her skills to good use. “This is a great opportunity for me,” she said. “I get to do something that makes me feel good, and hopefully, I can help others. Dozens of women entered the Healthwagon to receive various examinations and to learn more about health issues. While at UVa-Wise, she received academic scholarships that she said made a real difference in her life. She received the E. Glenwood King Scholarship, the Thelma Phipps Weaver & D. C. Phipps Scholarship and the Roy and Ruth Wells Scholarship in Chemistry. “I’ve always strived to do more than is asked of me,” she said. “UVa-Wise gave me the tools to succeed.”

The play. Two simple words can pack quite a punch. Two athletes can make history in just seconds, especially with a lot of help from their Cavalier football teammates. Just ask Marcus Bratton and Josh Wright. The two Cavaliers stunned the crowd in Carl Smith Stadium on Sept. 17 by scoring on a punt return as time expired to defeat Emory and Henry College 33-30. It marked the first time the Cavaliers emerged victorious against the Emory and Henry Wasps. The victory was sweet since it marked the last time the two Southwest Virginia colleges will play each other in football. The win was even sweeter when videos of the touchdown, known now simply as “The Play,” went viral on the Internet and were viewed by thousands of people across the nation. “There have been several great plays over the years in the four game series with our local rival Emory & Henry that have been rehashed on several occasions,” said Cavalier Head Coach Dewey Lusk. “The dramatic last second win was not only a great victory for our program and school, but for all football fans in Southwest Virginia. ‘The Play’ will be talked about

for years to come.” The game was exciting from start to finish. In total, the two schools separated by just 60 miles, finished with 148 combined penalty yards. The back and forth affair saw the sides post 24 first quarter points. In the second quarter, the Cavaliers re-took the lead 17-14, but three minutes and thirty seconds later, the Wasps jumped back in front making it 21-17. At halftime, the Wasps had a two score lead. In the third quarter, the Cavaliers scored a field goal to make it 28-20, but the Wasps managed a safety in the second half making the score 30-20 in favor of Emory and Henry with 15 minutes remaining. The Cavaliers rallied and cut the Wasps’ lead to three points with 6:36 seconds remaining. Following an Emory and Henry three and out, UVa-Wise appeared on the cusp of pulling off the comeback as the Cavs drove to the Wasps 30 yard line before Emory and Henry picked off an errant Cavalier throw at the 11 yard line with just 1:17 to go in the contest. While many fans left the stadium, those that stayed saw a remarkable finish. UVa-Wise held

Emory and Henry to a three and out to force a Wasps punt with just 12 seconds showing on the Carl Smith Stadium clock. Emory and Henry punter Todd Frazier booted the ball to the Cavalier 30 yard line to Bratton. The junior fielded the ball, crossed field and headed up the home sideline. The Wasps appeared to have Bratton corralled on the sideline, but the defensive back crossed field once more appearing to have a clear path to the end zone. What transpired from there will be discussed at tailgate parties for years to come as a Wasps player tripped Bratton at the 30-yard line. Bratton pitched the ball to teammate Wright, who took the lateral and raced 30 yards for the game-winning touchdown to complete the improbable comeback victory. Immediately following the game, a sea of red and gray stormed the field to greet Bratton, Wright, coach Lusk and the rest of the Cavaliers. “The final play is a great example of the sheer determination and theme of our 2011 football team,” Lusk said. “We play hard and physical in every game to the very end.”

In step with the Marching Highland Cavaliers The Marching Highland Cavaliers played host to a group of wonderful children and their families on Oct. 8 during the football game between the Cavaliers and Kentucky Christian University. The marching band and its instructors welcomed autistic children and their families to join them at a picnic prior to the game at Carl Smith Stadium. The children marched into the stadium with the band shortly before kickoff. At halftime, Reese Volk, son of UVa-Wise Associate Professor of Music David Volk, was the honorary drum major for the Marching Highland Cavaliers. He walked hand-in-hand with drum majors J. J. Hanchak and Curtis Gibson as they led the band on the field to get the halftime performance started. “It was quite an honor to feature Reese in this way,” Volk said. “He had a big day. It was a wonderful way to acknowledge the autistic community and to celebrate their lives.” In other news, the band donated more than $5,000 worth of used brass instruments to Dickenson County Public Schools in October. The band has been working with the school system for several years to help reestablish a band program in Dickenson County. “It is important to us at UVa-Wise to help the community,” said Director of Bands Richard Galyean. “Our department works hard to stay involved with localities, especially the region’s school districts. Donating instruments to local schools is just one way for us to accomplish our goal.”

The local program is growing stronger each year. Fans of the Haysi High School Tigers were treated to a performance by the school’s pep band in October. The students in the pep band will likely be the first members of the county’s first high school marching band in a couple of years.

Fulfilling the Dream

Campaign brought a successful transformation “Our challenge is to dream as big as our founders did and to develop a college that continues to be worthy of the aspirations our students and their families have for themselves, our region and the Commonwealth,” Chancellor David J. Prior said on Oct. 26, 2006 before 200 of UVaWise’s most loyal alumni and supporters as they officially began the “Fulfilling the Dream” campaign. Five years later, Chancellor Prior stood before a crowd of familiar faces and new friends to celebrate the successful conclusion of the $50 million campaign that exceeded expectations by raising $62 million. “The campaign has been a true gamechanger for UVa-Wise,” the chancellor told those gathered in the Convocation Center for the Campaign Celebration on Oct. 29, 2011. “Your loyalty to the college and the strength of your commitment are helping us realize the vast potential of this institution and the people and region it serves.”

Two dynamic reasons the ambitious campaign was successful were co-chairs Marcia Adams Gilliam ’82 and Hunter J. Smith. “There has been no better friend to this college and to Southwest Virginia than Hunter J. Smith,” Prior said. “She is a cando person who is a stalwart in her support of this college and dedication in her efforts to enlist others to support our mission.” Smith and her late husband, Carl Smith, provided funds for Carl Smith Stadium, athletic scholarships, an endowment for the Marching Highland Cavaliers, Smith Dining Commons and the renovation of the Lila Vicars Smith House, just to name a few. “Marcia Adams Gilliam is a person of great heart, wisdom and resolve,” Prior said. “Her unfaltering leadership as campaign co-chair has resulted in the phenomenal success of the ‘Fulfilling the Dream’ Campaign.” It was fitting that the co-chairs received the Volunteers of the Year award as the crowd applauded their hard work and dedication. announced on Oct. 29, 2011 that 8,600 donors who participated in the campaign have made “a positive difference in the lives of ” UVa-Wise students. “The ‘Fulfilling the Dream’ campaign broke new ground in so many ways,” she said. “Ninety-three new scholarship funds have been established as well as five endowed professorships. Twenty-one new funds for academic enhancements and 14 new funds for athletics are now in place. In addition, some of the largest gifts to the campaign came through bequests.” Five years ago at the campaign kickoff, Marcia Adams Gilliam said she believed the college’s founding fathers could not have envisioned the economic impact of the school on the region, but she said others now “recognize the impact of our college and can only dream of the future impact it will have.” She used the word impact again as she spoke at the campaign celebration saying the impact of the campaign brought positive,

transformational change to UVa-Wise, especially during a time of sharp funding cuts due to a national economic downturn. “The incredible success of the ‘Fulfilling the Dream’ campaign has brought this college to a pinnacle of achievement and philanthropy,” she said. “We have much to celebrate tonight. We have raised more funds in this campaign than we ever thought possible and for a most worthy purpose. On Dec. 31, 2011, the campaign will officially end. But it is also true that we have even bigger dreams ahead.” The Richard and Leslie Gilliam Foundation was honored as Benefactor of the Year for its generous gift of $8.3 million to build the Health & Wellness Center addition to the Slemp Student Center and to renovate a portion of Greear Gymnasium. “The Health & Wellness Center will support expanded health and wellness programs for our students and leverage the work of our Healthy Appalachia Institute in our region,” the chancellor said. “Richard and Leslie, we extend to each of you our sincere gratitude for this extraordinary gift and for all that you do for UVa-Wise and our region.” As the campaign kicked off several years ago, Luke Rasnick ’10, a senior and

vice president of the Student Government Association, was a child in Dickenson County. He said dodge ball tournaments and homework were on his mind as the campaign committee was making big plans. “While I was worried about that 30 minutes of homework I had every evening…you all were making preparations for my arrival at UVa-Wise,” he told the 200 benefactors at the campaign celebration. “I really feel as if it was done only for me. Every new building that was built, scholarship endowed and gift collected was made so that I could receive the education I need to conquer the real world. This is a tremendous accomplishment and all of us in the UVa community are proud of your success.”

for Science Center The Science Center at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise was awarded the U S Green Building Council’s highest designation for sustainable design, LEED Platinum certification. The building is only the second higher education construction project in the Commonwealth of Virginia to achieve the prestigious rating. “The LEED Platinum certification for the renovation of our Science Center demonstrates that we can create a striking and productive facility that is both academically and environmentally friendly,” UVa-Wise Chancellor David J. Prior said. “UVa-Wise is committed to our ongoing efforts to build facilities that have a minimum impact on the environment and that meet the needs of our campus. We are thrilled with the commitment and hard work that everyone has given to this project.” “The University of Virginia’s College at Wise set out to achieve LEED Platinum certification for the renovation of the college’s original Science Building in order to showcase our Department of Natural Sciences, which has been a key element in the academic success of the college, and to demonstrate our commitment as an institution toward operational sustainability and stewardship,” said Sim Ewing, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration David J. Neuman, architect for the University of Virginia, indicated his enthusiasm for the LEED Platinum recognition, and further noted, ‘Since 2007, we have been attaining LEED certification for all of our new and major renovation projects at the University of Virginia with the large majority either Gold or Silver level. have accomplished this level, with careful planning, design and execution, and not additional expense, is a tribute to the college and the entire project team.” The Platinum certification represents a long-standing effort on the UVa-Wise campus to consistently improve its environmental responsibility as it continues to grow. Efforts developed over the past decade, such as innovative campus-wide stormwater management and open-space preservation plans, contributed points toward the Platinum certification. In fact, the campus lake, designed by VMDO Architects in 1999, earned both stormwater quantity and quality credits for the project. Meanwhile, the design, construction and university team members (VMDO Architects, Quesenberry’s, Inc., University of Virginia and the College at Wise) worked closely together to pursue almost all of the credits available to the project. Highlights of these efforts include solar panels, which produce enough energy to offset 6 percent of the building’s energy consumption. Water use is reduced by more than 50 percent. The LEED recognition represents a stalwart commitment to smart sustainable design across the board. SUSTAINABLE DESIGN ELEMENTS STORMWATER: The campus lake, originally designed in 1999, controls the stormwater from the campus (including the Science Building) and captures natural pollutants released by mining spoils. Restoration of the stream feeding the lake was included as part of the construction project to improve the lake’s performance. ENERGY: With their increased need for ventilation, science buildings traditionally consume much more energy than the average academic building. However, energy recovery and efficient systems design reduce the building’s energy

consumption. Meanwhile, on-site energy production from one hundred twelve photovoltaic panels will generate 24,070 kWh of energy. All told, these combined efforts reduce the building’s modeled energy use by 26 percent over a code compliant building of the same size. Efforts to maintain low energy use including commissioning and metering ensure that the performance of the building will meet its expectations over time. INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY: Operable windows provide fresh air to the building while carefully selected low-emitting paints and finishes maintain a healthy indoor environment. MATERIALS: Collaboration with the contractors of Quesenberry’s Inc. led to significant material conservation for the project. Materials were selected and screened for high recycled content, toxicity and embodied carbon. Examples include gypsum board and metals selected for high recycled content, agrifiber wall paneling, and linoleum. The contractor’s management of construction waste separated and diverted more than 75 percent of the construction waste from landfills. ABOUT THE SCIENCE BUILDING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA’S COLLEGE AT WISE Renovations to the Science Building, which was originally constructed in 1964, were designed by VMDO Architects to meet the specific educational goals and teaching strategies of the current Science Department. The renovations serve the programs of Botany and Ecology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Science Education, and Software Engineering. With new classrooms, laboratories, and equipment, the renovated building allows students to participate in collaborative learning, fully engaging the scientific process.

It’s big. It’s bold. It’s beautiful. After decades of dreaming and plenty of hard work on behalf of the region’s lawmakers, Southwest Virginia has a facility to host conventions, trade shows, regional events and other activities here at UVa-Wise. We are only limited by our imaginations. The Convocation Center opened this fall and is already drawing crowds. A recent concert by “The Return,” a Beatles tribute band sponsored by the Wise Kiwanis Club, drew more than 1,000. Building a 78,000 square foot facility takes time and lots of material. The Convocation Center has enough wire to reach from Wise to Kingsport, Tenn., and enough conduit to stretch from Wise to Jenkins, Ky. The number of bricks used to build the arena is larger than the population of St. Petersburg, Fla. And last but not least, the entire campus back when the college opened in 1954 would fit inside the facility. Turn the page and begin a tour of the Convocation Center

Making themselves at home Kendall Rainey’s volleyball squad, except for three disappointed players who were in afternoon science labs, slowly made its way from the new locker room just in time for practice in the new Convocation Center. The smell of fresh varnish hung in the air as music by the Black Eyed Peas blasted from the massive overhead speakers. The players had toured the UVa-Wise Convocation Center while it was under construction, but things looked different this time. The wooden floor was shiny and new. The volleyball net was settled in place. The team had just a few days to practice in the new place before taking on rival Milligan College in the first match slated for the $30 million facility. The women quickly went to work after taking a good look at the bright red seats and the brand new Pepsi Cola scoreboard perched high above the floor. The team held a few more practices in the facility before the Sept. 17 contest with the Lady Buffs, knowing it would be a bit different playing in the Convocation Center

instead of Greear Gym. The Cavaliers and coaches were not sure what to expect as time for the match drew near. Would they draw a large crowd? Would it feel like home? Those questions were answered about one hour before the match began. More than 600 people filed into the Convocation Center for the historic match. The crowd was instantly enamored by the new facility and applause for the Cavaliers was loud. Members of other sports teams on campus arrived to cheer on the Cavaliers. The Marching Highland Cavaliers played the “Star Spangled Banner” and entertained the crowd with lively pep music. The band sang “Hey Baby” to the team as the tuba section rocked the arena. The match was close, but the Lady Buffs emerged victorious. However, the Cavaliers ended the day knowing they would forever be known as the first UVa-Wise team to officially play in the Convocation Center. They made themselves at home.

THE is in the house Joseph “Papa Joe” Smiddy clutched the neck of his banjo as he walked toward the stage in the UVa-Wise Convocation Center on a beautiful October evening. Flanked by the Reedy Creek Band, the college’s first chancellor, dressed in his cowboy hat and crisp, western style shirt, made history as he and his group became the first to perform in the new $30 million facility. “This is a wonderful facility,” he said after entertaining the crowd with a few songs, including “Butter Beans,” a ballad that has become his trademark tune. “I just can’t say enough about the Convocation Center. It means so much for this school and the region.” Many of the college’s first students, many of whom were here when the entire campus would have fit inside the new 78,000 square foot arena with space left over for parking, piled into seats to watch their former chancellor and biology professor give a rousing rendition of “Wise County Jail.” Current students, many who had never heard Papa Joe perform, clapped and cheered from the floor seats near the stage. It was only fitting that Smiddy, who has witnessed the college grow from a fledgling two year school fueled by the sheer unwavering force of a community’s vision to a vibrant liberal arts college that keeps growing, be the first to play the inaugural show in the Convocation Center. “It had to be “Papa Joe,” said UVa-Wise Chancellor David J. Prior. “No question. He is a true legend not only in Southwest Virginia but in the Commonwealth and beyond.” The inaugural concert is but one of many firsts that will take place as the Convocation Center begins its operations. Popular college entertainer Natalie Stovall took the stage after Reedy Creek and gave the facility its first experience with electric guitars and booming drums. Stovall, who played a concert at the Lawn by the Lake a year before the Convocation Center opened, was impressed with the facility. “We played outside last year in front of the lake and thought that was a beautiful setting,” Stovall said. “But you all have outdone yourselves with this place.”

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, Oct. 10 for its $30 million Convocation Center, a facility that many see as a vital part of the region’s economic development efforts. The Virginia General Assembly funded the 78,000 square foot facility after a strong effort from the Southwest Virginia legislative delegation. The coalfield region had no venue capable of housing conventions, tradeshows and other events that economic development officials saw as a necessity. The region’s lawmakers joined UVa-Wise officials, University of Virginia officials and leaders from the region Monday to celebrate the official opening of the facility. “This is a great building,” said Delegate Terry Kilgore ’83. “Our team in Richmond worked tirelessly for this college and this region. With this delegation, this college has grown immensely throughout the years.” Kilgore praised the strong relationship between UVa-Wise and the University of

Virginia and said the region’s young people benefit greatly from the partnership. Teresa Sullivan, president of the University of Virginia, said the Convocation Center would enhance the experience of UVa-Wise students and will allow the college to reach a new level of service and interaction with the region. She pointed out that the entire campus when the college was founded in 1954 would fit into the Convocation Center today. “This Convocation Center represents 78,000 square feet of opportunity,” Sullivan said. David J. Prior, chancellor of UVa-Wise, said the opening of the Convocation Center is a defining moment for the college. “The facility brings our college new opportunities and more responsibility and we embrace both,” Prior said. “Our students, our faculty and staff and our region’s citizens will all benefit for many years to come.” Helen Dragas, rector of the University of Virginia, said UVa-Wise is living its

unique mission of offering educational opportunity and excellence to its students and serving the Southwest Virginia region. “The Convocation Center is this partnership manifested in beautiful brick and stone,” Dragas said. “Both the university and the college exist to serve the people of our great Commonwealth. Today, I am delighted to witness us doing it so very, very well.” Marcia Gilliam, chair of the UVa-Wise Board, said the college is a haven of hope to students and their families, and will serve as a beacon for athletics, events, conferences and economic investment. “This Convocation Center will bring countless young people to UVa-Wise,” Gilliam said. “While those young people are watching a regional high school playoff game, singing along at a concert or enjoying a farm exhibit, they are getting a taste of this college and what might be possible for them.”

He is responsible for developing policy on intelligence support to U. S. Air Force acquisition programs.

Taylor Burgess is employed with the Appalachian School of Law as an admissions and outreach technology coordinator. He is married to the former Pebbles LeRae Deel and the couple resides in Grundy.

Mike Owens is a career coach with Southwest Virginia Community College. He is the head track coach for boys and girls as well as an assistant football coach at Haysi High School. Mike owns Haysi Mini Storage, LLC and an Internet advertising company. He lives in Clinchco.

Kimberly Sanders Austin recently accepted a position as an assistant professor at Southwest Virginia Community College. She resides in Grundy with her husband, Chris and their children, Sam, Anna Beth, Maddie and Ava.

Pat Bevins recently retired from her position as an administrative assistant in the UVaWise athletics department. She says she will miss working with the student athletes, coaches and the UVa-Wise family. They have two children, Brylan and Kaden. The family lives in Wise. Jodie Kern Bowen is a counselor in the Wythe County Public School system. She and her husband, Scott, reside in Marion. Heather Hensley Ison and David Curtis Ison ’09 welcomed their son, David Conner, on May 28, 2011. The Isons reside in Huntington, W.Va., where David is a third-year medical student at Marshall University School of Medicine.

Stephanie Osborne was awarded Gaston College’s 2011 Faculty Award as coordinator of the Writing Center. She has been teaching in North Carolina community colleges since 2006. Stephanie joined Gaston College as an English instructor in January 2010 where she helped establish the Writing Center along with other faculty. Stephanie is writing a book of poems entitled “Love and Other Objects in the Lost and Found.” Her published writings have been included in “Luminarum,” “The Jimson Weed” and “The Messenger.”

Lindsay teaches math at Union High School in Wise County. The couple lives in Big Stone Gap. Katheryn Ratliff Vass is a teacher in Tazewell County Public Schools. Brittany Leha’ Green was the recipient of a Lifesaving Valor Award in Leesburg on April 5 this year. She assisted in saving the life of a man who was in cardiac stress on the highway. Leha’ has been a Leesburg police officer for two years.

Derek Fields is currently working on a master’s degree in mathematics at West Virginia University. Beth Dye Mullins and Jordan Tyler Mullins welcomed their new daughter, Emily Marie, in May of 2011. In Memoriam George K. Beard ’57 passed away July 6, 2011, after a brief illness. He was a 1949 graduate of Big Stone Gap High School. George served five years in the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Beard, and daughters, Pam Hickman and Terri Belcher, one brother, Richard Beard, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Albert Walker Linkous ’61 passed away Friday, March 25, 2011. He was born in Splashdam, Va. and was retired from General Services Administration as a budget officer. Albert was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and sons, Mark and Ken, a sister, Sandra Oliver, and two grandsons, Walker and Aaron.

Jerry W. Kiser ’67 passed away March 1, 2011, in Mims, Fla. He graduated from J. J. Kelly High School in 1965. Jerry is survived by three children, Jeremy Kiser, Joetta Kiser and Rebecca Kiser Osborne, and two grandsons, Benjamin Osborne and Wycliff Nash.

Angus Joseph Pochyla ’01 passed away July 10, 2011. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1997 and was employed with Carter Machinery. Angus is survived by his wife, Cassie, and two sons, Neal and Davis and a host of family and friends.

Ken Sanders ’84 passed away June 20, 2011, following a battle with cancer. He was raised in Fort Blackmore, Va., and graduated from Twin Springs High School. He worked for Wachovia Bank in Roanoke. Ken is survived by his mother, Margie Pierson Sanders, an aunt and several uncles and cousins.

Ricky Berk Barton ’02 passed away October 9, 2011. He graduated from Council High School in 1983. Ricky is survived by his wife, Janice Barton, a daughter, Jaclyn, a son, Dean and his wife Verna.

If so, a tribute gift will allow you to honor a special person while helping UVa-Wise improve the educational experiences of our students. Tribute gifts are a thoughtful way to celebrate a birthday, wedding, anniversary, graduation or any special occasion. They also serve as a thoughtful expression of sympathy by honoring the memory of a friend or relative. Tributes or memorial gifts can honor someone you want to remember in a meaningful way, such as an alum, a favorite professor, a mentor, a colleague, a family member or a friend who has made an impact in your life.
