I am Daryl John De Guzman and I am a senior graphics designer in the College of Southern Nevada (csn). I created and the sole member of my company, Unlimited Visual Arts Works (uva works). This is the very first book I have wrote and designed. If you are just starting to learn this field, the contents of this book will teach you all the basic language of graphics design. If you are a seasoned veteran designer, give it still a read! You might need some refreshers on some of these basic terms. Maybe you will learn something new you did not knew before! I hope you all can learn a thing or two from reading this book and enjoy the rest of the book!

If you want to contact me, e-mail me at iamdjdeguzman@gmail.com.

01 CHAPTER

CMYK

colors

A process color for printing. It uses subtractive model which uses 4 colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. When the first 3 colors are added together, it produces a very dark brown color. The black is then used to completely remove the light from the printed picture to create black, It is used for printing photos, posters, magazines, and many others.

01

02

01 CHAPTER

RGB

colors

For electronic displays such as computer LCD screens and smartphones. It uses three additive primary colors which are red, green, and blue. If all there are combined together into equal parts, it will create white. The sRGB color space is used for web because it got a smaller color space. These color spaces are used to any digital images.

colors

Spot Colors

The Pantone or Truematch system uses a color matching system that uses specific color to assure you to get the exact color you want. It uses 13 base pigments rather than 4 of the CMYK process colors. It has over 1000 colors to choose from that a processed colors could never replicate.

File Formats

formats

Program specific - Photoshop Document (.psd) – For raster based photos. - InDesign Document (.indd) – For document setting up for printing or presentation. - Adobe Illustrator (.ai) – For vector based graphics. Universal formats - Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpg/.jpeg) – For lossy compressed images. It will produce a small file size. - Tagged Image File Format (.tif/.tiff) – For lossless uncompressed images. It will produce a big file size. - Portable Document Format (.pdf) – for packaging documents with a reasonable sized file.

07

08

02 CHAPTER

Raster

formats

This image format consists of pixels that forms the image. Rasterized images are smaller but it will get blurry if you tried to increase the image resolution bigger than the original size. Photoshop is a raster based program and is usually used for photos.

09

10

02 CHAPTER

Vector

formats

This image format consists of mathematical formulas that creates the image. It can be resized by any size and it will never get blurry. It got a bigger file size compared to rasterized images. Illustrator is a vector based program and is usually used for illustrations.

11

12

03 CHAPTER

Serif

type

A font type that have a decorative line on the characters. It got a classical look to it and is perfect for small body texts. The letters have both thick and thin transitional strokes. Some common examples of a serif font are Times New Roman and Garamond.

13

The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog.

14

03 CHAPTER

Sans-Serif

type

A font type that have no decorative lines on the characters. It got a modern look to it and is also perfect for body type. It does not use any thick and thin transition strokes. Some common examples of Sans-Serif are Helvetica and Arial.

15

The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog.

16

03 CHAPTER

type

Display

For big font sizes that are not suitable for body type. Most of them will have a certain style applied to the character like a calligraphy or a graffiti style on it that makes it hard to read when it is applied with a smaller font size.

17

18

04 CHAPTER

printing

Lithography

A planographic printing process that makes uses the principle of oil and water does not mix together. Grease is applied on an image on a limestone (originally) or a flexible aluminum plate (modern style) to repel the lithographic ink and then it is applied to a paper. Ex. Book covers, playing cards, and certificates.

19

20

04 CHAPTER

printing

Offset Printing A printing process that uses the same idea as lithography but it is more mechanized. It uses wet ink to be applied on a roller. Then that roller would go on a plate and blanket. Then the image is transferred to a continuous sheet of paper. Ex. Newspapers and magazines.

21

22

04 CHAPTER

printing

Screen Printing A printing process that uses a woven mesh to support an ink-blocking stencil. The stencil would open the areas for the ink to go through. Color is then applied the a fill blade that is used to force the ink through those small openings. It is also known as silk screening and can only do one color at a time. Ex. T-shirt designs.

23

24

04 CHAPTER

printing

Dye Sublimation A printing process that uses a dye-sub printer that vibrates the ink out instead of forcing it out. Then it uses a heat press to transfer the dye into a substrate. Ex. T-shirt designs.

25

26

04 CHAPTER

printing

Xerography

A dry photocopying technique. When a document is placed on a copier, a bright light is bounced off the paper, through a lens then to a specially coated drum. The coating is then becomes electrostatically charged with the mirror image of the document then the toner would be attracted to the charged area of the drum as it rotates. Then that toner would transfer to a paper that reproduces the original image. It is used in most photocopying machines and laser and LED printers.

27

28

04 CHAPTER

printing

Gravure Printing An intaglio printing process in which the image carrier has the image cut or etched below the surface of the non-image area. Then all the images are screened, creating thousands of tiny cells. Then the image carrier is immersed in fluid ink which fills those tiny cells then a substrate is brought into contact with the image carrier. Ex. Publications, catalogs, and paper money

29

30

04 CHAPTER

printing

Flexography

A printing process that uses a flexible relief plate to transfer the ink into a substrate. This is the modern version of the letter press. Ex. Food packaging.

31

32

04 CHAPTER

printing

Inkjet Printing

A printing process that uses a digital image to print into a piece of paper with CMYK processed ink. It is the most common and cheapest type of printer. Ex. Vacation photos and your homework.

33

34

04 CHAPTER

printing

Resin Printing

It is more commonly known as 3D printing. It is a printing process which uses a liquid light-sensitive resin and a high intensity light source to build a 3-dimensional part layer by layer. Ex. Small parts and toys.

35

36

05 CHAPTER

UV Coating

effects

A printing effect that exposes the coating to UV light to quickly dry and harden the coating. It creates a high gloss look. On the other hand, spot UV is only applied on a specific type or area rather than the whole piece being exposed to UV light. Ex. Business cards.

37

38

05 CHAPTER

effects

Blind Embossing

A printing effect that creates a raised letter press emboss on a paper stock without any ink or foil. Ex. Wedding invitations.

39

40

05 CHAPTER

Foil Stamping

effects

A printing effect that uses metallic ink to an type or area to create a shiny texture. Ex. Business cards and wedding invitations.

41

42

05 CHAPTER

effects

Thermography

A printing effect that uses heat to the ink to raise it. The ink would then have a nice raised texture on it when touched by someone. Ex. Business cards.

43

44

05 CHAPTER

Lenticular

effects

A technology which produces an image with an illusion of depth or the ability to change or move as the image is viewed from different angles. It uses a series of cylindrical lenses molded in a plastic substrate which are called lenticular lenses. Ex. Refrigerator magnets and billboards.

45

46

05 CHAPTER

effects

Aqueous Coating

A procedure that uses a clear, fast drying water-based coating to protect your finished printed pieces. It is visually undetectable.

47

48

05 CHAPTER

Lamination

effects

A procedure that uses a clear, glossy, and tough polyester film to protect your finished printed pieces.

49

50

06 CHAPTER

Coil

binding

A spiral like binding for book spines. It can be inserted by putting it on one side then spinning the coil around until it reaches the other side. Ex. Spiral notebooks.

51

52

06 CHAPTER

Comb

binding

A comb like binding that consists of multiple mini clamps for book spines. It can be opened again for easy access if you want to make changes on that book. Ex. Book binders.

53

54

06 CHAPTER

binding

Perfect Binding A binding technique that glues papers together by the spine from a heavier stock paper. It will have a spine. Ex. Paperback magazines.

55

56

06 CHAPTER

binding

Saddle Stitching A binding technique that staples through the centerfold that joins a set of nested folios into a book. It will not have a spine. Ex. This book.
