What is zero waste?
Zero waste goes beyond recycling and composting at the end of a product's life cycle to encompass the entire life cycle of a product.
This begins with product design, and envisions the use and management of materials in ways that preserve value, minimizes environmental impacts, and conserves natural resources.

WHY ZERO WASTE?
With today's rapid circulation of new trends, overconsumption is a massive issue -people are constantly buying new things.
Manufacturing & processing of goods requires extraction of finite natural resources & emits greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contribtuing to a loss of biodiversity and climate change.
Avoiding the purchase of new items is the best option when it comes to shopping; however, we know that it's necessary to purchase some items now and again. The next best thing you can do to support a circular economy is to reuse items or purchase used goods when possible.

THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
In our current economy, we take materials from the Earth, make products from them, and eventually throw them away as waste – the process is linear.
Most items we toss into recycling bins are not actually recycled - even those that are, are rarely recycled more than twice! In a circular economy, by contrast, we stop waste being produced in the first place. Existing materials are prioritized and repeatedly restored and regenerated into new products.

Thus, refusing the consumption of new goods when we can work with what we already have is a principal step in the transition to a circular economy.

HIERARCHY OF WASTE
You may have learned the "3 Rs" growing up - reduce, reuse, recycle. Consider this updated framework as a way to rethink the way you view waste and its management:
REFUSE REDUCE
Prevent waste upstream: consider what is truly necessary to own; begin to REFUSE things that are not
If you conclude that something is necessary, consider how much of it you need to buy or take.
REUSE RECYCLE ROT
Always carry reusable alternatives to single-use items such as bags, coffee cups, utensils, etc. Compost whenever possible!
