staff/faculty-Focused Discussion

October 30

Friday | 8:50 a.m. | Free Valhalla, Cartwright Center

After unarmed teen Mike Brown was shot and killed by Darren Wilson in August 2014, a group of 10 young people came together and refused to be silent in demanding his arrest and sweeping policing issues they faced daily that were later outlined in The Dept. of Justice Report of The Ferguson Police Department. They called themselves “Lost Voices” and in order to be heard, they slept outside in tents every night for months and marched every night at 7 p.m. at a time when few others were still marching. The Lost Voices, along with the efforts of other local community members, helped build a movement that eventually exploded beyond Ferguson. In this interactive session, Lost Voices will share their experiences from the last year, address national media portrayals vs their local reality, and why language matters (see Black Lives Matter vs. All Lives Matter). They will also express the transformational effect of their experiences, their personal development as young leaders, and how they have since given back to their local community in various ways that transcend the initial protests.
