SPRING 2016 SYMPOSIUM SUCCESS

NEWS OCW’s Newest President [Article by Becki Viner) Lema Kabashi became the Organization of Campus Women’s newest president on July 1, 2016 after sitting as president-elect behind Pamela Morrison.

The role of president-elect is to attend meetings in observation of the president, and learn how meetings are conducted, what the order of business is, and how to open and close those meetings.

A note from OCW’s newest president: “First of all, I want to say that I am extremely honored to be the president of the OCW this year. The OCW team is such a passionate and hardworking team, so I am looking forward to being part of it once again, although in a different role. Being part of the OCW in recent years has given me the feeling that I belong here at UW La Crosse. Given that our campus has so many new members, and some of them internationals like myself, I think that it is important to have the OCW engaging people in many different ways so everyone can give their contribution to causes that interest them and they are passionate about. I wish to see that OCW offers more opportunities to campus women in general so they will be able to present their research, and share their experiences, express their creativity, fashion,... overall, their achievements. It would be great to see the OCW getting more involved and contributing to the UWL community as well as the broader community of La Crosse.

This year, let's hope that the OCW will be reaching more people, changing more lives, and opening more doors for all.”

SPRING 2016 SYMPOSIUM A SUCCESS [Article by Becki Viner & Teri Halford-Talpe, photos by Teri Halford-Talpe] The OCW’s Spring 2016 Symposium, a pay-at-the-door event, held Friday, April 29 was a success. Over 40 participants converged on Hall of Nations to hear Nancy Richeson (Ph.D., CTRS, DFDRT) present “Aging Is a Woman’s Issue.” Through humor, insight, and research Nancy guided us to critically think about what it means to age, and dared us to have an action plan along the way!

For its annual Spring Symposium, the OCW has been reaching out to select UWL campus faculty to present their research as it pertains to issues affecting women. This past spring, Nancy Richeson, UWL Associate Professor in Recreation Management & Therapeutic Recreation, who has been at the forefront of developing recreational therapy interventions for use in the care of older adults, spoke on “aging.” Nancy, who considers herself a Recreational Therapist and Gerontologist, graduated with her PhD in Gerontology from the University of Nebraska and is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.

Her talk, “Aging Is a Woman’s Issue”, stressed the positive sides of aging: wisdom, resilience, experience, and adaptability. The talk addressed cultural challenges that all women face when it comes to getting older, the contradiction between the desire to live longer lives and the fear of “getting older”. Examples are everywhere--jokes, birthday cards, attitudes, and negative stereotyping.

She suggested that changing our perspective, such as not letting our age define us, embracing our age, and viewing aging as growth instead of decline, would be a tremendous improvement. Individuals will need to push these ideas ahead so that society follows. The message of aging can evolve to be a part of our life that we can look forward to, a “new opportunity and strength”. Nancy gave examples of how aging women can be contributors to society, and not burden: “new technologies will emerge, societal attitudes must change, then all women can “own their age” instead of apprehend this natural part of life. “ Useful books, shared by Nancy, with the room, are currently on order at Murphy Library: Counterclockwise by Ellen Langer, Seven strategies for positive aging by H.D. Hill, Disrupt Aging: A bold new path to living your best life at every age by J. Jenkins, Goddesses Never Age by C. Northrup, Healthy Aging by A. Weil.

UPCOMING OCW EVENTS WWHEL’s Fall 2016 Conference: “Navigating Political Waters,” with Lieutenant Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch as keynote speaker is scheduled for October 20-21, 2016. The host campus is UW Eau Claire. Early bird registration and breakout sessions available.

BOOK CLUB NEWS Book Club Choice - A Lesson Before Dying

by Ernest J. Gaines. Set in the fictional community of Bayonne, Louisiana, in the late 1940s, A Lesson Before Dying tells the story of Jefferson, a twenty-oneyear-old uneducated black field worker wrongfully accused and convicted of the robbery and murder of a white man, and sentenced to death by electrocution.

2016-2017 JEAN L. FOSS & NORENE SMITH SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED Seven students were awarded scholarships through the Jean L. Foss and Norene A. Smith Organization of Campus Women endowment fund. The fund was established in 1985 to assist non-traditional women students at UWL. Scholarships are awarded annually at the Eagle Excellence Scholarship and Award Recognition event, and paid to the students for the following academic year.

This year’s OCW scholarship recipients include: Lee Yang, Kristin Dulinski, Lindsay Faust, Holly Hotchkiss, Jessica Herrman, Sheila Teboh and Allison McIntyre.

…& A Little Bit More • As we prepare for fall and winter consider this. According to the EPA, the air inside our homes has 2-5 times the pollution level as outside air, and because we are forced to stay indoors more during this time of year, we should pay close attention to the quality of our air. Annie Bond, author of “Better Basics for the Home, “ suggests simple strategies such as leaving your allergens, dirt, molds and chemicals at the door with the removal of your shoes.

• Also by adding indoor plants such as English ivy, you are helping clear the air.

• In addition, we can eliminate lingering mold using Bond’s all purpose solution: Combine a teaspoon of tea tree oil per cup of water in a spray bottle and spritz around the home.
