Occupational Therapy Program Student Handbook
Students must have completed all the academic course work and be in good academic standing (i.e. not on probation) to progress to level II fieldwork. Fieldwork must be completed within 24 months after the completion of the academic portion of the curriculum. Graduation Students must successfully complete both the academic and fieldwork portions of the curriculum to qualify for graduation. Per graduate studies policies, both the academic and fieldwork portions must be completed within 7 years after beginning the program (Graduate Studies Academic Standard) http://catalog.uwlax.edu/graduate/academicpolicies/ Certification and Credentialing After graduation, students may request an official transcript from UW-L records and registration and are eligible to sit for the NBCOT certification examination. States that have licensure requirements may grant the license based on passing the NBCOT certification examination. Some states have additional requirements for obtaining a state license including testing on the law, oral examinations, etc. Students may not practice until they have been granted a license.
D-4: Drug Use Policy The occupational therapy program does not require drug testing for admittance to the program or during academic coursework. However, impaired performance in coursework due to substance use will not be tolerated and may lead to reprimand including program dismissal on account of poor professional behaviors. Fieldwork sites may require proof of negative drug screening prior to starting a fieldwork experience. The UW-L Student Health Center can offer an 8 or 10-panel drug screen with students assuming financial responsibility for the cost. While marijuana and associated substances (edibles, THC containing products) may be legal in some states, it is still considered to be illegal at a federal level as it is a class 1 drug. Students who do not complete or do not pass a drug test as required by these facilities will not be allowed to participate in the fieldwork experience and may face reprimand, including possible dismissal from the program. Students using medications for medical purposes that may impact the results of a screen, must provide current proof of prescription.
