What is the best thing you can do to enhance your college experience?
Study abroad. A study abroad experience will
change the way you see the world, and it can help you in your career – whatever it is that you want to do after you graduate! Finding the right program is essential to making the most of your experience, and we’re here to help you throughout the entire process. Whether you are looking to take courses for your major, learn or improve a second language, earn credits for a certificate program, or explore a destination that has always fascinated you, we can help you find the right program.
manage Costs You can't afford to NOT study abroad. Don’t let misconceptions about the cost of studying abroad keep you from an experience that will change your life. Programs costs vary greatly and UWM has programs that can fit different budgets. Factors like program duration and location can have a big impact on your out of pocket cost. A shorter program might mean a lower price tag, but a longer duration might open up more financial aid options. Not only does the cost of living vary greatly in different locations, currency differences can impact the actual cost of a program. Different types of programs will have different pricing models, and may impact how your financial aid applies. It’s a tricky process to navigate, and the staff at the Center for International Education are a great resource to help you determine the best program for you. It’s never too early to begin the process of funding your experience abroad. Here are some good places to start you along the way. • Attend a Financing 101 session (see our website for dates/times) and learn how to maximize your financial aid package. • Explore available scholarships on our website and do independent research for funding specific to your major. • Fundraise through social media platforms. • Consider tracking your expenses while in the U.S. for a month. This may help you budget for personal expenses while abroad (remember to consider exchange rates!).
get started So, you’re ready to make the leap. Now what? 1. Reflect. Consider what you want from your experience abroad. Language acquisition? Cultural immersion through a homestay? Central location for convenient travel to neighboring countries? 2. Explore programs. Use our website to search by areas of study, country, or language of instruction, among others. 3. It’s STUDY abroad. Meet with your academic advisor (the earlier, the better) to do some academic strategizing. Identify which classes should be taken on campus and which would be better to save for abroad. 4. Budget. Studying abroad doesn’t have to break the bank. Check out our website for a variety of funding possibilities, including many scholarship opportunities. 5. Go. Have the experience of a lifetime.
