Honors College
The Honors College combines the personalized education of a small liberal arts college with the vast resources of a large research university. Honors College students attend discussion-based seminars alongside their regular UWM classes to earn an Honors degree. Other benefits include priority course registration, scholarship opportunities, access to a writing specialist and more. uwm.edu/honors
Metamajors
About 25% of new students aren’t sure what their undergraduate major should be. Metamajors are a great way to explore within a general subject (such as business or health) without committing to a specific major. Students take classes that meet degree requirements for a wide range of majors, allowing them time to discover what they’re most passionate about while also keeping them on track to graduate. uwm.edu/metamajors
“Students at UWM are a joy to teach. They’re bright, hard-working and eager to build community. I'm always amazed by their range of accomplishments.”
David Southward, associate teaching professor in the Honors College
Academic Resources
The Writing Center is the first stop for assistance at any stage in the writing process. Students get personal sessions with a trained writing tutor. Over at the Student Success Center, you’ll find one-on-one and small group tutoring for lecture classes. The Accessibility Resource Center makes sure students with disabilities have full access to assistive technology, interpreters and other services. uwm.edu/writing-center | uwm.edu/arc | uwm.edu/studentsuccess
UWM Online
One of the things UWM does best is online education. In 2024, UWM ranked in the top 20 in the nation for best online bachelor’s degree programs by U.S. News & World Report. In a typical year, UWM offers more than 800 online classes, all of which are taught by the same high-quality instructors as in-person classes. Want to go 100% online for maximum schedule flexibility? UWM has more than 40 fully online degree and certificate programs. uwm.edu/online
RESEARCH RESEARCH
Don’t settle for simply memorizing answers for the test. When you’re at UWM, you’re part of the conversation and can meaningfully contribute to your field from day one. Whether you’re conducting a survey in the community or examining samples in the lab, students in every area of study are encouraged to dive deep into research. We can’t wait to see what you discover.
A few more benefits of doing research include:
» Forming strong mentorships with professors
» Travel opportunities to present your research at conferences
» Being better prepared for graduate school or your future career

Eugenio, a conservation & environmental science major, developed a methodology and phone app to assess how buildings contribute to bird strikes.
Zoe, a social work major, collected data for Aging Together, a pilot program designed to provide education and peer support to older adults in regard to aging.
Owen, a theatre arts major, researched the music of "Once Upon a Mattress" to better interpret the story through dance. He then created and taught cast members the choreography.
“Anyone can Google something. It means a lot more to be able to say: I did this. I made this. This was me.”
Allison, Applied Mathematics & Computer Science major from Milwaukee, WI
CONNECTIONS CONNECTIONS
“Interning for ‘The Morning Blend’ at TMJ4 helped me create a demo reel I used when applying for jobs. I’m now a weekend anchor, producer and reporter at KTTC News.”
Charles, Class of 2023, Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies major from Milwaukee, WI
The excellence of a UWM education doesn’t come only from expert faculty and high-quality labs, studios and classrooms.
It’s also about what happens outside the classroom, when UWM students step into engineering co-ops, take on internships at Fortune 500 companies, teach in Milwaukee Public Schools classrooms, provide health care to patients or travel to the other side of the world for a semester. Those experiences dramatically shape and strengthen the education students get in the classroom — and UWM’s deep connections to professional industries across the city and beyond are what make it all happen.

Living Learning Communities (LLCs):
One of the best ways to make the most of living on campus is being part of a living learning community (LLC). Think of LLCs as communities within communities. Students are grouped together in the same part of a residence hall based on a shared interest or major. Not only are LLCs a great way to make friends on day one of college, but students who live in LLCs also tend to have higher GPAs.

EAST SIDE EAST SIDE
Your Guide to the Neighborhood
Milwaukee is a city of neighborhoods, and UW-Milwaukee’s neighborhood is the Upper East Side. To the north is the community of Shorewood, to the west is Riverwest, south is the Lower East Side and to the east — Lake Michigan. Every Milwaukee-area neighborhood has its own personality, and the Upper East Side is no exception. This lakeside neighborhood is filled with historic homes and tree-lined streets, but there’s also plenty within short walking distance, including grocery stores, pharmacies and restaurants. UWM students also get automatic, no-charge access to the Milwaukee bus system and the UWM B.O.S.S. shuttle.
Bradford Beach
Once summer settles in, Bradford Beach starts to buzz with volleyball games, lake breezes and beachgoers enjoying frozen custard — a classic Wisconsin treat. You may even spot a surfer or two, no matter the season. (Yep, people surf on Lake Michigan in January!)
North Ave.
This street five minutes south of campus is almost always bustling. Here, you’ll find the east branch of the Milwaukee Public Library, a rock-climbing gym, an Ian’s Pizza, a food hall, a historic movie theater, an alley filled with murals by local artists — and much, much more. Three of UWM’s residence halls are also in this area.
Downer Ave.
Within two blocks, you can do a little bit of everything. Browse the bookshelves at Boswell’s, catch a movie at the Downer Theatre, get brunch at Café Hollander, tacos at BelAir or coffee at Stone Creek or Starbucks — then tackle your grocery list at Sendik’s. On weekends, this area is buzzing with families and UWM students.
Oakland Ave.
Two blocks west of campus is Oakland Ave. UWM student favorites along this stretch include Oakland Gyros, Qdoba and Noodles and Company. Walgreens is also conveniently located here. Head north on Oakland Ave., and you’ll be in Shorewood, a quiet neighborhood with restaurants and a large grocery store.
Lake Park
Five minutes from UWM is the perfect oasis in the city. Lake Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same architect who planned NYC’s Central Park. It’s an ideal space to take a breather from studying, set up a hammock and reconnect with nature. The North Point Lighthouse is also located here.
