BUTSUMOKU-‐JI „Even grass, even trees, can become the Buddha.” (Line from Butsumoku-‐ji’s Goeika.)
The entrance to the 42nd temple of the Shikoku pilgrimage is guarded by majesSc Niō statues. Inside the seven gods of luck greet the visitor on his way to the sanctuary and a thatched bell-‐house with a dragon decorated Bonshō catches the eye. Ojizō and many other statues worth taking a look are spread throughout the temple grounds. The deity of the temple is Dainichi Nyorai and it is depicted in a 700 year old wooden sculpture with a core of camphor wood, going even further back to a legend about the founder of Shingon Buddhism, Kōbō Daishi. A unique prayer house devoted to animals, w h e re f a r m e r s c o u l d e x p re s s t h e i r appreciaSon for the hard work of farm animals is the only one of its kind on the 88 temple pilgrimage. Nowadays it serves also as a place to pray for your beloved pets.
