WAREI-‐TAISAI Once a year the city of Uwajima turns into a stage for an unparalleled atmospheric parade. Portable shrines (Omikoshi) are carried through the streets of Uwajima to bring good fortune to the people. Dances are performed in the city’s arcades by kindergarten groups, bank clerks or Hawaiian hula dancers. You have all the typical summer fesNval stalls from the takoyaki vendor to the kitschy plasNc toy and hero mask stall. Sounds like any other fesNval in Japan, doesn't it? What makes it special is the night procession. All the people who were celebraNng around the city, gather for the “Hashirokomi” at the Suka-‐kawa river in front of the Warei-‐jinja shrine. Torches and bonfires illuminate the night while dozens aaer dozens of parNcipants descend into the water with portable shrines, decoraNve floats and Uwajima’s symbol the “Ushioni”. The air is filled with wild cheering and the sound of “Buyare", a bamboo flute played by children. Then a dance of the Omikoshi around a long high bamboo pole foreshadows the main event. A man is chosen to climb the pole to the top to which a lucky charm is adached and bring it down. Success in doing so will bring prosperity and luck to the chosen one and to all the people who gather at the event site.
Warei-‐taisai is now part of the three day long “Uwajima Ushioni Matsuri” that takes places during 22nd, 23rd, 24th of July in Uwajima.

UWAJIMA DEEPER
Pearls When an impurity enters a shelled mollusk, the same reacts with a protecNve mechanism, covering the intruder with layers of nacre and a pearl is born. Since ancient Nmes the pearl was admired for its beauty, pureness and rarity and considered by different civilisaNons as symbol for wisdom and beauty and a protecNve talisman bringing luck and wealth to the owner. Here in Uwajima’s deep blue waters you will find some of the most beauNful and pure of them. The pearls from Uwajima are not only used as jewellery, but also as an ingredient in beauty products around the world. Chanel, a leader in the fashion and beauty product industry is using the powder from Uwajima’s pearls in their cosmeNcs. If you have enough pocket money during your Japan trip buy some gorgeous necklace for you or your beloved one. If you however prefer a more inexpensive but sNll unique present, you might enjoy a pearl seminar, during which you become a pearl expert and learn to tell the difference between low and high quality pearls. Or how about a pearl treatment to make your skin pure and dazzling as a pearl. In Uwajima there is a pearl related experience for everyone.
