SSAF

The Student Services Amenities Fee (SSAF) is a compulsory fee charged by the University for all students enrolling at UWA. The income generated by this fee is collected by UWA and distributed among different areas that provide services and facilities for all students.

In 2013, funding from the SSAF went to a number of areas - the UWA Sports Association (27%), University run Student Services (22%) and the UWA Student Guild (32%). The SSAF makes up about 70% of the Guild’s budget, and helps to fund a range of Guild services everything from the Volunteering Hub to fully trained Student Assist officers to clubs and societies!

We are also affiliated to the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) which represents all post-graduate students, and the Council of International Students Australia (CISA) which represents the specific needs of international students studying in Australia.

Student representation and educational advocacy are our top priority at the Guild. Each year we affiliate to a number of national student bodies in order to achieve comprehensive representation for UWA students, at both a local and national level. This gives UWA students a voice that will be heard by state and federal governments, the media and the public, and helps us collaborate with other campuses across the country. The National Union of Students (NUS) is the peak representative body for all tertiary students in Australia. The NUS runs a number of campaigns throughout the year, across a huge range of areas - from protesting against cuts to higher education, to campaigning for fair pay for students and equal pay for women, to specific campaigns for LGBTI students. These campaigns all focus on improving student life for all students, and involve lobbying at a national level. This affiliation gives us

Guild Village is located at the heart of UWA’s Crawley campus. Here you will find the UWA Student Guild Student Centre and Guild Volunteering. This is not only where the Guild offices and Student Centre are located, but also a huge range of stores and services! Market Day is probably the most underrated weekly occurrence at UWA. Market day occurs every Tuesday in the Guild Village. You’ll find a huge range of stalls selling everything from secondhand books and records to amazing vintage finds (bags, dresses, boots, amazingness).

TENANTS

You can get your haircut from Talking Heads, get a prescription from the Pharmacy (conveniently across the courtyard from the medical centre), get your eyes checked and even visit the dentist. If you need to pick up your unit readers and textbooks, the Co-op Bookshop and the Guild Secondhand Bookshop are both located in Guild Village, and if you need to print an assignment, poster or information booklet (like this one) UniPrint is the place to go. If none of that sounds very exciting, you can also plan your holiday at STA Travel, but if you’re only thinking of traveling more locally (or, like everyone else, have lost your SmartRider 3 times already this year), Campus News & Gifts will sell you a new one and load cash money dollars onto it.

change. Over the year, you’ll see a tonne of changes in this majestical palace and, as if in disgust of its former self, it will rise from its ashes like some ancient draconic kraken and decapitate the expectations of all involved. TAV 18+ People get very passionate about the Tav.. Here is a testimonial from a Tav regular... Alright, down to business. The Tav is possibly one of the greatest places on earth. This place is nuts. Packed with loose cannons, the Tav is an ancient watering hole frequented be UWA lords and legends since the beginning of time*. It was the first city in the Babylonian empire and is actually built on the ruins of the lost city of Atlantis. That’s some serious vintage. Vintage is hipster, so the tav must be great right? Anyway. There is always something happening in the tav, whether some cruisy tunes by local performers, wicked sick events like St Patricks Day and Oktoberfest, friends catching up over a drink or past heroes reawakening to reclaim former riches. The tav can also serve up some super sick pub grub, bound to keep you satisfied. I suggest the Kampong, a hidden pulled pork gem. Rub a dub CLUB. Not only is the tav an awesome venue, IT’S GETTING BETTER. Once every fifteen thousand years or so, the Tavern spins itself a silken web and undergoes a metamorphosis, taking on a complete face

YO U R S T U D I E S While a huge part of uni life is about making friends, joining clubs and societies, and broadening your experiences, we’re all here to eventually get a degree of some sort. To help you make the most of your time here at UWA, while also surviving your studies, here are some of our top tips: ONLINE RESOURCES - these are your friend. Each of your units will have an LMS page (lms. uwa.edu.au), where you will be able to find most of the resources related to your unit - the unit outline, assessments, lecture powerpoint pdfs (download these before your lectures for easy viewing and note-taking!), tutorial sheets and related readings. A lot of your units will record their lectures, which you can access through LCS (Lecture Capture System) via the LMS page.

go to your lectures. Course Materials Online (CMO) is where you will find past exam papers for revision, links to textbooks and also free access to some online journals. Get your head around online journal databases early! Check out the UWA Libraries website for advice on how to find what you’re looking for looking for journal articles for assignments will help you find the most up to date and specific research in your field! Remember, OneSearch is your friend and gives you access to a massive database of online journals and entire books online! Google Scholar is also a winner.

Student Email You have a student email! This is how all of your lecturers and the university will try to contact you. It’s run through Gmail so it’s super easy to add to all of your devices etc. Make sure you log into this ASAP through www.my.uwa.edu.au LMS or www.webmail.uwa.edu.au. STUDYSMARTER STUDYSmarter is an initiative which assists UWA students with their studies through workshops and online resources. Students can also drop-in to gain advice from WRITESmart and (ma+hs) SMART tutors. Check out www.student.uwa. edu.au/learning/studysmarter for details the workshop calender, GETSmart online resources and the handy assignment date calender. Other handy links: OLCR: By now we should have all sorted out our timetables but if you haven’t, head over to www.olcr.uwa.edu.au to do that asap! This system will try to minimise clashes and give you your timetable for the semester. Timetable: The UWA timetable website provides a great avenue for testing out different variations of your timetable and make up a mock draft for you to take to OLCR. This service is available at www.timetable.uwa.edu.au Referencing: UWA has very strict rules pertaining to plagiarism and collusion, so don’t get caught out by not referencing your sources! It’s also a really great method to track where you get your info from for later revision. For clarification and guides on referencing, head over to www.guides.is.uwa.edu.au. Also, make sure to ask your lecturer which referencing style you should be using! EndNote: The link to the guides in the Referencing section above includes a guide to EndNote. EndNote is an automatic referencing system that integrates seamlessly with Word. If you’re writing a big paper of report, EndNote will make your life a heap easier!

C h e c k w h e t h e r y o u r u n i t r e a d i n g s a r e a v a i l a b l e o n l i n e b e f o r e y o u b u y t h e u n i t r e a d e r ! Yo u m a y f i n d that a lot of your required readings are available on LMS or CMO, or through a library search engine.

Important Software: If you need to use a specific program or software for a certain assignment, you might be able to get a temporary student license to install on your own computer. Just ask your lecturer or school IT admin. EMERGENCY RESOURCES Forgot your labcoat, calculator or charger? Never fear, the Guild is here! From 2014 students will be able to borrow calculators from the Business School, Reid Library, Science Library and the Guild Student Centre. Labcoats can also be borrowed from Science Union. Device charging stations have also been introduced into all the major libraries on campus. The IT store in Guild Village also sells a range of chargers and computer needs.

Website: www.guild.uwa.edu.au/welcome/ support/welfare Facebook: www.facebook.com/ uwastudentguildwelfare Email: welfare@guild.uwa.edu.au Location: Guild Hall, Rm 1.54 WOMEN’S DEPARTMENT Women are systematically disadvantaged in the broader community and at University. The UWA Student Guild Women’s Department aims to fight sexism and misogyny on and off campus. On average, it will take women three times longer than men to pay off their HECS DEBT. 67% of women have had unwanted sexual advances during their time at University while 76% of women feel unsafe on campus at night. Think this needs to be changed and challenged? Get involved with your Women’s collective. In order to book an individual counselling appointment or attend a triage session go to the 1st floor of the Social Sciences South building. For further information go to www.student.uwa.edu.au/life/health/counselling MANAGING STRESS Everyone feels stressed sometimes, whether about family, money, friends or even university. Because stress is a normal part of life it is essential to learn the best ways to deal with that stress. Some of the best ways to deal with stress are very simple, like doing some physical activity, taking some time out or doing some breathing exercises. If you are feeling stressed for extended periods of time don’t wait for it to become something more serious, talk to a counsellor or doctor about it. ALCOHOL - SAFE CONSUMPTION While university is a time for socialising and meeting people it is also important to stay safe and healthy, especially when it comes to alcohol. No one likes to be the embarrassing, vomiting one at a party so here are some simple tips to drink wisely: set yourself limits and stick to them, drink slowly, eat before or whilst you are drinking and have a glass of water to every alcoholic drink. A handy way to keep track of the number of drinks you have had is to collect the bottle tops or soda tabs in your pocket.

If you haven’t given Macca the Pig a cuddle you haven’t lived. His walkers love to chat about him so stop them and ask them how Macca is - Macca is our friend. T h e Wo m e n’ s Ro o m co n t a i n s f re e p a d s a n d t a m p o n s w h i c h c a n b e a l i fe s ave r i n e m e rge n c i e s !

SAFE SEX - CONSENT Consent is sexy. And no consent is illegal. The only way to determine if someone has given consent is for them to tell you. Sometimes the person you’re with might look like they are happy but on the inside they are not, so it is also important to consider body language. If they are not responding to touch, holding their arms tightly around their bodies or stiffening their muscles it might be a sign that they do not want to continue. If you see any of hesitation from your partner it is important to stop and ensure that proper consent has been established before you continue. When drugs or alcohol are involved people’s ability to make decisions is affected. That means that if someone is very drunk or high they cannot give consent. Being with them in a sexual way when they don’t know what’s going on is equal to rape.

If you think you have been sexually assaulted you can call the Sexual Assault Resource Centre on 1800 199 888 to speak to a counsellor. To find out more go to www.kemh.health.wa.gov.au/services/sarc/

YO U R S T U D E N T E X P E R I E N C E FACULTY SOCIETIES Faculty Societies (or FacSocs) are student run organisations that cater for the needs of students enrolled in their particular Faculty. No matter what degree or units you’re enrolled in, one of the FacSocs has got your back! FacSocs are as varied as the students that they represent. They run a huge variety of social, careers, student welfare and equity events while also acting as education advocates and student representatives to your Faculty. So, whenever you’ve got an issue with your degree, a unit, an assessment or even a lecturer, your first point of call should be your Faculty Society Education representative! Getting involved in your Faculty Society is one of the greatest and most fun ways to meet new people and impact the lives of your pals. By getting involved in a Faculty Society and even jumping on a committee, you could be involved in organising some of the biggest uni parties in Perth, develop links with companies and businesses for that far distant time when you graduate and everything in between! The Undergraduate FacSocs all take on Fresher Reps in the first few weeks of uni so you should definitely try to make the most of this opportunity and get on board!

10. University Dental Students Society (UDSS) 11. WA Medical Students Society (WAMSS) CLUBS! UWA boasts over 100 Guild-affiliated clubs and societies that cover a huge range of interests from social clubs, to multi-cultural, political, faith, social justice, performing arts, niche interests, education or faculty-related clubs and many more! These clubs run lots of events like BBQs, cake stalls, seminars, sundowners, cocktail parties, large scale raves, balls, networking events, sporting events, the list is endless. Most clubs have t-shirts you can buy to show your support! The best way to stay up to date with your favourite club’s events are to follow their page on Facebook, sign up for their email list and come down to Oak Lawn for Tuesday common lunch hour – many clubs set up stalls on Oak Lawn to sell membership, tickets and club merchandise. You can also get their contact details at www.guild.uwa.edu.au/welcome/clubs/list GUILD EVENTS! The UWA Student Guild runs many of the largest events on campus, and best of all, many of our events are free for Guild members! (Or at least you get a big discount!) Here is our calendar of events for the year. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook to stay up to date on events or check the back of this flyer for a list of all Guild run events this year.
