EDITOR EDITOR'S NOTE
Being a student is a challenge, being an international student is an even bigger one. I believe student life in my home country is pretty easy, but being a student by yourself in a different country can be hard. I was just 18 years old when I first landed here in Perth. It’s been 2 years now and I’ve had some wonderful and some tough experiences that I will remember throughout my life. The journey has not been easy, there are challenges that I have faced that I believe most international students will experience when they first come to Perth. However, we are so blessed to have the International Students’ Department act as an umbrella organisation for all the students from around the globe on campus where they can easily reach out to us or the other multiple cultural clubs for help when they are struggling or facing issues. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity to be this year's Lighthouse editor. With this magazine, I hope everyone, not just international students, were able to gain some useful insights into Perth. Welcome to the new semester! Yours sincerely, Zi Yi Kee
PRESIDENT PRESIDENT'S NOTE
Hi everyone! I am Geemal Jayawickrama, and I am honoured to be your International Students Department (ISD) President for 2022. I am from Sri Lanka, and I am currently in my third year studying Economics. Being an international student presents many challenges. You are away from home, away from friends and family, and you’re often required to face many of life’s challenges on your own whilst residing in a foreign country. The easy thing to do would be to shy away from these challenges or use them as excuses that inhibit our personal growth. Instead, I request you all to embrace these challenges and utilise them as motivation to excel in all facets of your life, especially your university studies. As someone said once, going abroad to study is not a vacation or a holiday, it’s a second life. This is your second life, your second opportunity to become the best version of yourself that you always have dreamt about. There are so many opportunities here at UWA, to help you be that best version of yourself. The Guild has more than 150 clubs and societies on campus, ranging from Music Appreciation Clubs to Science Clubs. All these clubs organise multiple events throughout the year, and the best advice I can give to you is GET INVOLVED mate! Go to every possible event on campus at least for the first couple of weeks of the semester because these events are the perfect place to meet your lifelong friends, gain experiences, make memories, and seek opportunities to become involved in uni life. Now that you are in a foreign country, always try to learn and to do new stuff. It's always easy for us to go into our shell and keep doing what we did at home, but please always try to challenge yourself to do more and escape your comfort zone. Australia is filled with interesting things to do and engage with. From its rich and oldest continuous Indigenous culture, beautiful landscapes, picturesque beaches, exciting sporting events, delicious food and amazing night life, Australia is truly one of the most exciting places in the world. Australia is a big country and there are so many things for us international students to learn and see. Always be curious and keep asking questions from people around you. Your journey as an international student will be a life-changing experience, but also a challenging one. It won’t always be easy and with the continued effects of the pandemic, the future still remains uncertain. Whether you face academic, professional, social, or personal challenges, we at ISD and UWA encourage you to NEVER GIVE UP. Whatever challenges you face there are numerous services, programs, and staff who are here to help. Never hesitate to reach out because we are here to ensure that your time studying here at UWA is the best possible experience You are going to learn so much in the next few years, not in just in your studies, but in your relationships, personal identity, and your worldview. Embrace and immerse yourself in this roller coaster of a ride. I wish you all the very best for the upcoming semester and I am excited to meet each and every one of you during the semester. Remember, to get more than a degree- Friends, experiences, transferrable skills, and lifelong memories. Yours sincerely, Geemal Jayawickrama

ON CAMPUS ISD DOES PROSH
PROSH PROSH
PROSH M PROSH
Over the last 91 years, UWA Students have been banded together to raise money for the charity in the best way they know how – PROSH. PROSH is a satirical newspaper that is written by students to cover every aspect of politics, news, entertainment, sports, weather and comics. PROSH began as a much smaller magazine, called the STRUSS-SRUSS and has grown into the paper we know and love. Every year, students don their favourite, most flamboyant costumes and hit the streets of Perth at 5 am to sell papers. All of the funds raised from tin rattling on PROSH day gets donated to a different set of 3 charities every year. Historically PROSH has cracked the $100,000 mark for donations, providing a huge financial donation to the charities. PROSH itself is an incredibly fun morning for students but also is an incredible cause, providing a significant financial donation to the awesome charities. In the weeks leading up to PROSH, there are several writers nights where general UWA Students can contribute to the paper. You can contribute by writing
articles,
headlines,
funny
sentences,
creating
digital
art,
advertisements or simply by sitting in the company of other students, embracing this near on 100-year tradition. While producing the paper is the most important part of this endeavour, students would argue that the PROSH Olympics are the best part of PROSH. PROSH Olympics are a series of activities (think egg in spoon race, three-legged races, hula hooping and many more competitive things) that students compete in teams typically through club involvement. The winner of the PROSH Olympics gets to choose where in the Perth districts their group is situated on PROSH morning, so the prize is highly sought after. To get involved with PROSH – come and see our tent on ODAY! Or check out our Facebook and Instagram (PROSHUWA) for heaps more info on what we do and how you can join! We will be having some online writing prompts so if you are overseas and can not come to campus, don’t worry we’ve got you covered! Stay tuned to our socials for more details!! We look forward to seeing you on the 23rd March 2022 for PROSH DAY!!! Eleanor White and April Htun PROSH Co-Directors 2022.

EAT & SHOP CAFES IN PERTH
BY LUCAS LEE
CAFÉ GUILTY PLEASURE 1/222 JAMES ST, NORTHBRIDGE WA 6003 This Korean owned cafe/dessert shop is one of my all time favourites in Perth. Not only they are opened until late night, they also sell the best bingsu in town! Huge fan of their interior design, which reminds me of olden Europe. I often find myself here after dinner with a bunch of friends and would 100% recommend this place if you are seeking for post-meal sweets!
BESPOKE CAFE BY BARISTA HQ 400 ALBANY HWY, VICTORIA PARK WA The first cafe I tried in Perth and it honestly blew my mind! They sell amazing coffee and some of the best toasties in Perth. Their dishes are definitely instaworthy, and quite tasty too! Aside from that, they also provide barista training to all of you who are interested in the craft of coffee making. Truly one of the hidden gems in Perth.
ARRIVAL HALL CAFE 162 ABERDEEN ST, NORTHBRIDGE WA 6003 Don’t be fooled by its name, it’s not some random cafe in the airport. This cafe is easily my top 3 must go cafes in Perth. Love their concept of a cafe in a furniture store, or maybe the other way around? Food is very creative and yummy, coffee even better! You can even play a 1v1 basketball game with a friend while waiting for your food in the garden.
EAT & SHOP BY DEBRINA TANDEAN
I’ve lived here in Perth for two years now and some of the places I love to go to a shop in Westfield mall in Carousel.
They have so many options of stores to choose from as well as great food to eat. My favourite shops to visit while in Westfield are definitely Mecca, where there are endless options of makeup and perfume brands to choose from as well as Peter Alexander which sells unique pyjama sets. A cheaper alternative option for clotheS shopping is Waterloo Outlet Mall which is just a few stops away from the city. There are popular clothing shops such as cotton on and Calvin Klein but with more affordable prices. There are many more places like these to shop around Perth but Westfield and Waterloo are definitely a crowd favourite.

I’ve been at St Catherine’s College since July 2019. I’ve enjoyed every moment of it but I think my first semester here is still the best. St Cat’s has a diverse community and a wide variety of events, there’s always something for everyone. In 2019, I had the opportunity to meet international and exchange students from different countries and I’ve learnt so much from them, not only their culture but their openness to new experiences. Unfortunately, there are not as many international students here at college currently and it felt so much different than before. Now the borders are open, I can’t wait to have international and exchange students at college.

Life at a residential college - University Hall For the past two years, I have called University Hall my home. If you are ever wondering if moving to college is worth it, I will tell you it is definitely a memorable experience. At University Hall, I am surrounded by a diverse community. I get to meet new people while enjoying my meals at the dining hall. Sometimes, we would sit in the dining hall and talk for two hours because we truly enjoy each others’ company. On other days, I meet new people through the many activities and events that are being organized. My favourite event would be Bubbles and Paint that was held at the end of my first semester in University Hall. It was an artistic de-stress event where I could paint on a canvas, enjoy some food and drinks, and have fun with my friends. For me, the cherry on the top would be the convenience of having your friends close by - the moments of closeness with friends, all within a safe and nourishing environment on campus. Shuhui Yong , Malaysia
At a residential college, we generally live in 'corridors' of wallto-wall individual rooms with shared bathroom and laundry facilities. Basically we get our own personal space , but always have friends nearby which is awesome. I get to share my problems, thoughts, happiness and also food to my best friend whenever I want. Besides that, staying at Trinity also helps me to improve my academic too. The college will organise tutorial session for the residents which allow them to have small discussions with the mentors. Lastly, staying at Trinity not only expands my network but also helps me to explore more hidden talent. Jia Min Lew, Malaysia
Life in Tommy More has been mostly great. Not only is it a convenient distance to uni but we also have a scenic view of Matilda bay. College life will always be upbeat and full of wonders, it really makes you grow as a person whilst you learn how to balance your studies, social life and personal life. Definitely have a go at college life at least a semester in university, it is a lifechanging experience! Winnie Zhang, Singapore
Last year I moved to St. George’s College from my home in Bunbury. I was excited to be going to college but never expected just how much I would fall in love with the place. The incredible people I’ve met, the beautiful friendships made and the fact we live in the closest thing to a real-life Hogwarts is beyond what I could’ve hoped. If you’re like me, you enter college knowing hardly anyone there but leave with over 200 friends. You can always see residents studying in the common room, basking in the sunny quad, having a chat over a cuppa in Elsey or over a delicious meal. There’s heaps of music at St. George’s, I joined The Mockingbirds, an all-female a capella group, and the chapel choir directed by the amazing Christophe Karas. We rehearse in the on-site chapel with its beautiful acoustics. Most nights my favourite thing to do is study in the library below the great hall, listening to Raymond Yong playing the Fazioli. The staff are super kind and offer great support, with student support services and RAs ready to help out at any time. If you’re thinking of moving to college, I promise you, you won’t regret it! You’ll build new friendships and share memories that you will hold close for the rest of your life. Breanna Cooke , Australia
WA ROADTRIPS ROADTRIPS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA
in the year of 2021, bunch of us decided to take a trip up to Geraldton for a short trip of 4 days and 3 nights, taking a night at Jurien Bay to explore the town. On the way up, we took a stop at Lancelin, where we tried ATVs for the first time. In Jurien Bay, my friends and I thought it was only fitting to watch the sunset at the nearby beach, Sandy Cape Recreation Park. While taking a nice swim and watching the sunset, we were surprised to meet a local sea lion. In Geraldton, we did watersports, explored the town and took a day trip up to Kalbarri. The highlight of Geraldton was trying a jetski for the first time during our watersports day. Overall, the trip was enjoyable and exciting as we could fully rest and recuperate from the busy semester and spend some quality time with my friends while still trying new things. BY FAITH YEE

EXMOUTH Exmouth ‘22 Last summer, I embarked on a 12-day road trip up north to Coral Bay, Exmouth and Shark Bay with 14 other friends and our trust 4 Wheel Drives. In total, we spent 3 nights in coral bay, 4 nights in Exmouth, 3 nights in shark bay and 1 night in Geraldton. The highlight at coral bay was when we joined the Manta Ray tour, where we snorkelled right next to the Rays! In Exmouth, we rented a boat, which allowed us to go further out from shore where we did some spearfishing for our dinner! On the second last day of the trip, we left Shark bay, embarking on a 3.5hour offroading trip with our cars packed with our luggage to Steep Point, the most westerly point of mainland Australia. We then spent our last day at Geraldton, before slowly making our way back to Perth, tired, but happy! BY JOSHUA WEE

CULTURAL FESTIVAL BY VIKNASH VM
Being away from home for the past 3 years during the festival of Deepavali was unique as it was spent away from family but here in Perth, I was able to celebrate it with friends who I can consider my family as well. We had a gathering in my place and cooked for friends and had a potluck lunch where everyone could enjoy and celebrate the festive season in their cultural attire! A call to home and joining them via Facetime also brought that feeling of home and made the day go by sweeter! It was definitely a great Deepavali celebration!”

Balik Kampung!
I think every Malay can agree that Hari Raya or Eid Al-fitr - an Islamic tradition to conclude Ramadhan (the holy fasting month), would be the celebration which best embodies the feelings of home. Every Islamic culture celebrates it differently. Our version is filled with prayers, donations and sharing delicious Malaysian delicacies such as Kueh, Biskut Raya, Ketupat and Rendang with loved ones. We wear our various traditional costumes when visiting family and friend’s open houses where children receive enveloped duit Raya (money). Hari Raya is a time dedicated to family gathering and religious commemoration.
CULTURAL FESTIVAL LUNAR
NEW YEAR BY SOPHIE TRINH
2021 marked my first Lunar New Year away from home and my family in Vietnam. But at least here in Perth, I was lucky enough to celebrate it with my close friends. We got together, dressed up in our traditional clothes and enjoyed a fulfilling home-cooked meal together. We tossed YuSheng, a Singapore Malaysian special dish only served for New Year, to pray for good luck, health and fortune for the new year. It was a very interesting experience to celebrate cny with other international students who come from different countries.
