Itismyfavoritetimeoftheyear!Wehavecelebratedthesuccessofover800graduatesduringthe fivecommencementceremonieslastweek,aswellasbeguntheorientationseasonofregistering newfreshmanandtransferstudentsforsummerandfall.Itisatimeofreflectionandrejuvenation asweenjoythehardworkandeffortsofourfaculty,staffandstudents.

Youwillfindinthepagesthatfollowthatwehavehadabusyyearofmakingpurposeful improvementstotheDivisionofStudentAffairs. Weareimplementingorganizationalchangesin theDivisionandhaveseveralinitiativesinplacethatwillbereflectedinthestudentbodyenrolling thissummer/fall.ThefirstdraftoftheEnrollmentManagementPlanhasbeenpublishedandwill continuetoguideoureffortsduringthe2023-24academicyear.Aswecontinuetoexplorewaysto removebarriersthatpreventourstudentsfromhavingsuccessaswellaswaysthatwecan enhancethestudentexperience,youwillfindthatwehaveanamazingStudentAffairsteamwho genuinelycaresabouttheUWAstudent.

Asalways,weareproudmembersoftheUWAfamilyandwillcontinuetoworkhardtomakeUWA special.

First,pleasejoinusincongratulatingourspring2023graduates.Collegeisalwaysachallenging period,andtheresiliencyofthesestudentsissomethingtobeapplauded.Asyoucontinueyour journeybeyondtheUniversityofWestAlabama,weencourageyoutocontinuetolearn,explore,and discover.

IthasbeenanexcitingacademicyearandIamstillsettlingintowhatisatrulyrewardingand demandingpositionasDeanofStudents.StudentAffairsoffices,programs,services,andpersonnel arefirmlyembeddedintheUWAexperience.Whileweassessandcontinuouslyimprovetheseand otherstudentinteractions,ourannualreflectiononthepreviousyearprovidestheentireStudent AffairsDivisionanopportunitytolookbackontheyearinadeliberatemanner,somethingthat'snot alwayspossibleduringthetypicallyfastpacedschoolyear.

ThispastyearUWAstudentsexcelledandweweretheretosupportandenhancetheirexperiencesin manymeaningfulways.Fromincreasedclubandorganizationinvolvement,toStudentGovernment initiatives,topeerledworkshopsandeducationalprograms,studentsdemonstratedadeepand sustainedenthusiasm.Thepastacademicyearaffordedourcampusanopportunitytonotjust experiencecampuslife,buttakeanactiveroleinredefiningthebestexperiencepossibleforour students.

AsincerethankyoutothetalentedandcommittedstaffwhocompriseStudentAffairs,ourmany colleaguesandpartnersacrosscampusandinthecommunity,andtothestudentswhohelp motivate,andinspireallofustoenvisionandachieveevengreateraccomplishments.Andthankyou fortakingtimetoallowustosharewithyouthissummary,wethinkyouwillagreethatitwasquitea year!

TheprogramcelebratedthesuccessofSSSstudentsbyhonoringourgraduates,president’sand dean’slistawardwinners,andmanyothers.

SavannahWilliamswasnamedtheSSSStudentoftheYearfor2022-23.Sheisagraduating healthsciencemajor.Besidesbeinganexcellentstudent,shehasbeenafantastictutorforthe SSSprogram,avarsityathleteforthetrackteam,andaleaderinseveralorganizationsacross campus.

TheSSSFreshmanoftheYearwasa3-waytiethisyearbetweenCourtneyFoster,HaleyHill,and KaitlynRotton.Theyallearned4.0GPAsintheirfirstfallsemesteratUWAandhavequickly becomeleadersoncampus.

SSSFLISOCIETYNEWS:

TheFLiSocietyheldabakesaleandrafflethisspring,raising$348.Theyhaveraisedover$1,000this year,whichtheywillbeusingtobuildouttheirtextbooklendinglibraryandtohostevents celebratingfirst-generationcollegestudents.

TRIALPHAFIRSTGENHONORSOCIETYNEWS:

TriAlphaheldtheirinductionceremonyinApril,inducting38first-generationcollegestudents.Theyalso recognizedthe31TriAlphamembersgraduatingthisspringwithagraduationcordforeachmember.

Volunteerscleanedwindshields,addedwasherfluid, checkedoillevels(offeredrecommendationsoncorrectingifoilwaslow),andcheckedtirepressureand adjustedasneeded Inaddition,thevolunteerscheckedthetaillights,brakelights,andturnsignals This wasthesecondtimethisacademicyearthatweofferedthisservice. Itwillbeheldneartheendofeach semester.

ThefirsteditionoftheTigerTalknewsletterwillbereleasedlaterthismonth. Thegoalistoprovide updatesandresourcestoparentsdesignedtohelpthemassisttheirstudentinnavigatingcollegelife. The newsletterwillincludeinformationaboutevents,importantdeadlines,andcontactinformationfor variousresourcesacrosscampus,suchasFinancialAid,StudentAccounts,andCounselingServices

ADAAccommodations

ContactedallstudentsthatreceivedADAaccommodationsforthespringsemestertoinquirewho wouldberequestingaccommodationsforthefall Asresponsescomein,thestudentfileisupdated toeitherdiscontinuetherequestorprepareaccommodationsfortheupcomingsemester. Createdanddistributedasatisfactionsurveytoallstudentsthatreceivedaccommodations.

Counselingserviceshostedthe2023ALCAHybridEthicsWorkshoponApril28,2023. Counselorsfrom acrossthestatecouldparticipatein-personorvirtuallytoearnCEUsinethicstofulfillrequirementsin maintainingtheircounselinglicensure. 26counselorsparticipated,including22utilizingthevirtual option. CoordinatorofCounselingServices,PhyllisLewis,presentedonMulticulturalCompetence: EthicalConsiderations.

AspartofSexualAssaultAwarenessmonth(April),CounselingServiceshostedaseriesoftablestoshare informationandresourceswithstudentstoraiseunderstandingandawarenessaboutsexualassault.

TheofficesuiteinFoust7recentlyupdatedthecommonspacewithnewfurniture. Thisadditionispart ofanintentionalefforttocreateawelcomingspaceforeveryonewhovisitsthearea.
