A Message from Gordan Thibedeau President/CEO of United Way of Larimer County Dear Fellow Community Member: We faced many challenges during the past year and we applaud the thousands of community members who reached out to ask “what can we do?” Collaborations are the key to creating long-term systemic change in our community and world. This year, United Way of Larimer County convened hundreds of community stakeholders – nonprofit leaders, government officials, academics and funders – to work togther to address the root causes of increasing poverty in Larimer County. Moving people from poverty to self-sufficiency is no small task. Together we can accomplish this goal. Thanks to the exceptional generosity of our donors and the outstanding commitment of our partners, more than 70,000 local families and individuals benefited from United Way of Larimer County supported programs. We kept food on tables, provided shelter for families, helped people work toward financial stability, and ensured the viability of the health and human service nonprofits. There is much work left to be done to ensure all Larimer County residents have the basic building blocks for a good life. Recognizing that, United Way of Larimer County will continue to cultivate and mobilize our partners in tackling the underlying causes of complex issues across our community and creating measurable improvement in the lives of our most vulnerable residents. United Way of Larimer County believes it is up to all of us to keep our community one of the best places to live in the country. Whether it is important to you to make long-term change, or to change a single life, by contributing to United Way of Larimer County, you are making a positive change in your community. On behalf of all of us at United Way of Larimer County, thank you for your continued commitment and support.

HOW WE WORK United Way of Larimer County mobilizes the nonprofit, private and public sectors to improve lives, strengthen community, and build a stronger Larimer County. We work to help people now and in the future by developing system-wide solutions to the increasing needs of families and individuals in our community. At United Way of Larimer County, our vision is to meet the needs of those in need in our community and we envision a thriving community – one in which every person has their basic needs met and has opportunities for economic self-sufficiency.

WHY UNITED WAY?

The modern United Way is committed to accelerating social change. In our unique role as a bridge-builder between the public, private and nonprofit sectors, we are positioned to make a positive difference in our community.

COMMUNITY IMPACT In 2006, United Way of Larimer County refocused its efforts on how to address our community’s most pressing issues through a new community impact model. That fall, we began a community-wide engagement process, called Pathways Past Poverty, to identify the most pressing issues in Larimer County and refine our efforts in order to achieve and measure even greater success through increased collaboration. The community impact model is designed to help people now and produce significant long-term systemic change rather than short-term fixes. This model includes a program-to-policy approach. It includes creating and incubating new initiatives with key stakeholders, measuring results and working with the right partners to affect change.

“Community Impact is about long-term change, not quick fixes. This is not something you can do in a year, it takes time. It’s about focusing on the top issues that most affect the people in our community and measuring the successes in terms of change. A long-term change is what we need to turn around the trend of increasing poverty in Larimer County.”

COVERING OUR BASICS Cornerstone Partners Our corporate and community partners are key to United Way of Larimer County’s far-reaching impact. In 2009-2010, local companies chose to underwrite our administrative costs so that 100 percent of the contributions United Way receives are invested directly into the programs that help the people in need throughout Larimer County. The Cornerstone Partners enable United Way contributors to have absolute confidence that their money is being invested on the issues they care about.

R

“United Way is a very broad reaching organization. I donate money to United Way and I trust that they will spread those dollars to the programs and to the people in the most need.” Photo by Richard Mauro Ricchiuti, imagecatcherman.com

Programs and initiatives WOMENGIVE

In just four years, WomenGive is making headlines for its efforts and impact. This United Way of Larimer County program provides financial assistance for childcare to single mothers who want to continue their education. The cost of childcare is a major barrier to women and girls becoming self-sufficient in our community. So far, 35 single parents have graduated college because of the WomenGive program. While some are furthering their education, many are now working in their field of study. This would not be possible without the wonderful commitment and generosity from WomenGive members. The Impact of 2-1-1 Florence, an 80 year old woman, needed transportation from Wellington to Fort Collins for surgery on Wednesday, November 11th (Veterans Day.) A community transportation service could not assist because it was a holiday. She called 211 in a panic because she had been unable to cancel the surgery without incurring a $210 cancellation fee. Florence said, “she had called everywhere she could think of to get a ride and could not find transportation." The 211 Information and Referral Specialist made multiple calls to different agencies to help her. The specialist was able to secure someone from the Wellington Senior Center to drive Florence to her surgery appointment in Fort Collins. 15

Pathways past poverty With so many impacted by the recession, the work of Pathways Past Poverty, a United Way initiative, is more important than ever. The initiative is a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to reducing the number of people in need in our community. The goal is to turn around the trend of growing poverty in Larimer County. The initiative began in 2006 when Census Bureau statistics showed an alarming increase in poverty in Larimer County. To keep up to date on the Pathways Past Poverty work, visit www.p3larimer.org. 16
