2012 Campaign Dennis Black is on the job Dear Fellow Supporters, It is my honor and privilege to serve as the 2012 United Way Campaign Chair. Every day, I see United Way working in our community. In my workplace and in my neighborhood, I see people facing challenges, and I know we are fortunate to have a rich network of services and programs that United Way helps to make possible. As I follow Dennis Elsenbeck’s passionate leadership as chair of the 2010 and 2011 Campaigns— both of which were a tremendous success—I certainly have big shoes to fill. But I have no doubt that our entire community will join me in building on the positive momentum of the past two years, as we continue to support United Way’s mission. On September 12, we officially kicked off the 2012 Campaign, setting the goal at $13.7 million, which represents an increase of $100,000 over the 2011 Campaign result. It is an ambitious goal, but one that I am determined to reach because, as you will see in the summary of United Way’s Community Needs Assessment report, there are many critical areas of need in our community. And United Way is working harder than ever to support the programs and services that help address those needs and make our community stronger. together to make a significant difference in the lives of our friends, family, co-workers and neighbors in need.

United Way is making significant progress on reversing a downward trend in donations after facing an international economic crisis and a national decline in charitable giving.

Dennis Black has enthusiastically volunteered to serve as chair of the 2012 United Way Campaign. His impressive history of community service includes a long-standing relationship with United Way. In addition, his extensive background in education and leadership at the University at Buffalo is a tremendous asset in helping to advance United Way’s mission through the 2012 Campaign. “We are delighted that Dennis has agreed to serve,” said President & CEO Michael Weiner. “And I know that his energy and commitment will enable us to build on the successes we have achieved for the community over the past two years.”

With your help, and the enthusiastic support of our whole community, I know we can work

Five-Year Campaign Performance

Dennis Black

Steve Finch, board chair and GM Powertrain plant manager, noted that the campaign is a community effort that requires strong leadership, adding, “Dennis’s passion for the community and his understanding of United Way’s unique role make him a natural fit and a perfect choice to lead our fundraising effort to another successful outcome this year.” When asked why he agreed to serve as chair of the campaign this year, Dennis noted the significance of United Way in the community: “How do you say no to an organization that says yes to so many in need? How can you say no to an organization totally dedicated to improving our community well-being? When asked to do your part for Buffalo and Erie County, and for United Way, you say ‘yes’.”

Community Needs Assessment: Evaluating the critical needs of our community To better understand the challenges currently facing Buffalo and Erie County, United Way initiated a Community Needs Assessment in 2011. The primary goal of the assessment was to identify and measure critical needs related to Education, Income, and Health & Wellness in order to better focus the organization’s efforts on creating positive community change. collection techniques in order to obtain reliable and unbiased data on the demographic, social and economic conditions of the area. Data was collected on more than 100 measures of community well-being. In addition, researchers conducted more than 20 interviews with key stakeholders and more than 30 focus groups with providers, program participants and local residents. The final component of the assessment was an investigation of national, statewide, and local best practices in health and human service provision as well as a review of local and national research studies. The team synthesized data from each of these sources into a well-defined picture of community needs.

Igniting Hope in Our Community’s Youth When we help children become successful in school and in life, it offers hope to their families, and makes our whole community stronger.

Cassandra T.*, Orchard Park, NY During my junior year of high school, I had bad grades and was failing in math and science. As the youngest of seven kids, and with my family on public assistance, I didn’t feel very hopeful about my future. The school counselor referred me to the Hillside Family of Agencies’ Work-Scholarship Connection, a United Way funded program. I began to improve my grades and earned my way into the job readiness program. I did 25 hours of training and practice interviews, and they helped me get an interview at Wegmans, where I was hired as a cashier. Now I work part-time and have money to help my family and save for my future. My youth advocate believes in me, and I know I will graduate from high school and go to college. That makes me feel very proud. Thank you for rewriting my story. *Names and images have been changed for confidentiality.

Securing Stability for Those in Need When we provide people with support to help meet their basic daily needs, it allows them to focus on important priorities that lead to long-term stability.

Albert B.*, Buffalo, NY As a single parent struggling to support my kids, Social Services referred me to a United Way funded program at The Salvation Army. I had been a supply sergeant in the U.S. Army for 14 years; but after my honorable discharge, I had trouble finding a steady job, so I worked at whatever temp jobs I could find. Then my wife abandoned us, and I had to apply for public assistance just to provide for my kids. I had no idea how to get a good job or what to say in an interview, but I was too proud to ask for help. The Employment Services Program staff taught me how to search for a job and succeed in an interview. Now I have a permanent job as a security guard, I can provide for my children, and I’ve already received a raise. Thank you for rewriting my story.

Inspiring changes for a healthier region When we provide people in need with resources that help them live safer and healthier lives, we ensure a healthier future for our whole community.

Gabrielle N.*, Lakeshore, NY It’s been a long time since I felt hopeful, but after a neighbor told me about the Buffalo Prenatal-Perinatal Network, my life turned around for the better. I was a pregnant mother of five, and had just given birth five months earlier. I never went for prenatal care and had serious complications with the birth. I also smoked and had chronic depression. With the support of the Community Health Worker Program funded by United Way, I quit smoking, received prenatal care, and got counseling. They also drove me to appointments and helped me apply for nutrition services. I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and learned how to breastfeed and care for her properly. My life is more stable now and I’m learning to take better care of my kids and myself. Thank you for rewriting my story.

Collaboration Is Alive & Well in WNY One of the many ways United Way accomplishes its mission is by building and facilitating strategic partnerships throughout the community. Our initiatives come to life with the skills and resources of all of our partners. Helping children reach their full potential Two of the key collaborative partnerships in our Education platform include the Afterschool Network of Western New York and Closing the Gap in Student Performance, both of which help United Way work toward advancing Education in our region. Here are some highlights:

Afterschool Network of Western New York • Serves as the regional resource, venue and voice for systems-building in afterschool and expanded learning for youth •C ommunicates with local, state and federal stakeholders about the benefits of out-of-school-time enrichment opportunities

• Services include, but are not limited to: clothing and food, tutoring and mentoring, mental health services, grief and loss counseling, parent programs and outreach, afterschool and out-of-school enrichment programs, crisis intervention, mediation, behavior and re-entry planning, and classroom management workshops

Assisting families in achieving self-sufficiency CASH (Creating Assets, Savings & Hope) is a coalition of more than 60 organizations dedicated to increasing financial stability for low- to moderate-income families living in Buffalo and Erie County. A United Way initiative, CASH helps advance our goals in Income for people in need in our community. Specifically, the coalition: • Seeks to increase the number of dollars coming into low- to moderate-income households from available tax refunds, credits and other income supports • Improves the coordination, reach, quality and consistency of financial education available in Buffalo and Erie County • Increases awareness of local asset-building opportunities for low- to moderate-income households and persons with disabilities and their family members • Supports education and employment opportunities for low- to moderate-income households • Identifies financial concerns and refers individuals to community-based agencies with the help of trained volunteers that serve as CASH Coaches

CASH and its partners have had a significant positive impact on the lives of individuals in our region. For example, CASH: • Launched a mobile assistance unit to provide tax preparation assistance in rural and suburban locations - Since 2004, CASH volunteers have completed 71,000 federal tax returns that generated over $90 million in refunds • Secured federal funding for an Individual Development Account program that matches participant savings for homeownership (4:1) and small business startup (2:1)

Bringing people together for a stronger community United Way has been bringing people, organizations and resources together to improve community well-being since 1917. Hundreds of thousands of people have given their time, talent, resources and passion to transform the quality of life for people in need in Buffalo and Erie County. The compassion, dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers serve as an inspiration to us all every day. They are instrumental in helping United Way accomplish its mission and they contribute thousands of hours of service to support the programs that help make our whole community stronger. Their service amounts to significant savings in operational costs for United Way as well as for our partner agencies that do not have the resources to accomplish all of their goals without the support of the volunteers. More than 150 local nonprofit agencies offer ways to volunteer, from one-day events to ongoing projects. On the next page, you will see some examples of how United Way supports our community through volunteerism.

“ I contribute time and money to the United Way because it is the most direct way to help those in our community who need help now and then, and because the agency is one of the most efficient United Ways in the nation. That means that more of the money raised goes to the people who need it most. There are many, many fine agencies in Buffalo-Niagara doing excellent work. The United Way helps the broadest cross section of people in the most effective ways.” Stephen Bell, Partner, Director of Public Affairs, Eric Mower & Associates United Way Board Member, Leadership Donor & Loyal Contributor

Tiana and Alexanna S.*, East Side of Buffalo, NY When my aunt referred me to a United Way funded program at the King Urban Life Center, my daughter Alexanna had significant learning disabilities. They connected me with the Parent-Child Home Program and sent a home visitor to help with her reading and developmental skills. After just one year in the program, she is showing a lot of progress. Thank you for rewriting my story.

Jeff P.*, Arcade-Chaffee, NY During a difficult time in my life when my wife was sick, my truck broke down and I couldn’t get to my job. The medical bills were piling up and we were in debt, so we called Child and Family Services and they referred us to their Ways to Work Loan Program, which is funded by United Way. They helped us get approved for a lowcost loan and we bought a used vehicle. Now I have a reliable car and I feel more financially secure. Thank you for rewriting my story.

Frank C.*, Wales, NY Five years ago, I moved in with my son and spent most of my days alone while he was at work. Then I heard about Movin Seniors, a United Way funded program at Rural Transit Services, and I started going to the Aurora Senior Center for lunch. It wasn’t long before I volunteered as a driver aide. Since then, I’ve become very active in the community and have made many new friends. Thank you for rewriting my story.

Organized Labor Partners United Way and the labor community have enjoyed a long and important partnership in Erie County and across the country. Locally, union employees at companies throughout Erie County supported United Way generously through their donations and volunteer efforts. And, through our Labor Relations unit, United Way offers support to employees who lose their jobs to layoffs and plant closings. ··1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East
