“ I feel fortunate to live in a community where so many people come together to help United Way achieve its mission of ensuring a stronger and better future for all of Erie County.”

Over the past three and a half years, United Way has undergone a tremendous transformation.

With the guidance of our extraordinary Board of Directors and skilled staff, we have decisively reversed a 10-year trend of declining revenues and enhanced our impact in the community.

Thanks to the generosity of our dedicated donors and volunteers, we took great strides in achieving another remarkable Campaign result in 2012 for a total of $14,033,752.

This year’s performance represents a 3.1% increase over last year and is the largest percentage increase since 2001.

Enclosed you will find detailed examples of the many factors that contributed to the success of this year’s Campaign, as well as the impactful, life-changing results that were achieved through United Way’s programs, initiatives and collaborations.

Challenges Ahead We have come a long way in helping our neighbors in need, but there is still a great deal to do. Now, more than ever, we are challenged to increase community investment in our work— work that goes well beyond program funding into community-wide collaborations, extensive volunteerism, valuable training for nonprofits, and much more.

Goal 1 Goals set & results met United Way completed a five-year strategic plan in 2010 that articulates three overarching goals.

And each year, United Way sets specific objectives to help achieve these goals.

The following highlights feature United Way’s key accomplishments over the past year, outlined against our goals.

Facilitating mergers to strengthen nonprofits Your investment in United Way also supports the facilitation of mergers and consolidations between local nonprofit agencies in order to protect essential community services. Eligible organizations may apply for a United Way implementation grant to help with legal, accounting and other expenses.

Taking Strides During the Holidays We are proud to be a member of the Western New York Holiday Partnership, a collaboration of agencies focused on improving the quality of life for families during the holiday season. Last year, the Partnership provided toys and gifts to nearly 11,000 local children to help make their holidays special.

INCOME Creating Assets, Savings & Hope (CASH) 60 organizations helping to improve the financial health of hardworking families across Erie County • Seeks to increase dollars coming into low- to moderate- income households from available tax refunds, credits & other income supports • Improves the coordination, reach, quality & consistency of financial education • Increases awareness of local asset-building opportunities for low-income households, particularly within special populations (refugees, persons with disabilities, veterans) • Supports education & employment opportunities for low- to moderate-income households • Identifies financial concerns & refers individuals to community agencies with the help of trained volunteers that serve as financial coaches

Taking Strides to Understand Poverty In 2008, CASH Buffalo started facilitating interactive poverty simulations for those interested in understanding the day-to-day realities for people living in poverty. Since then, nearly 80 simulations have been hosted for 70+ groups, companies, agencies and educational institutions.

How It Works: Participants assume various roles within different families facing poverty. All are expected to provide for basic necessities and shelter over the course of four 15-minute “weeks.” During this “month,” family members seek assistance from a variety of human services and other organizations.

“ This was incredibly eye-opening. I thought I knew what to expect, but never anticipated becoming so emotionally engaged with the process. I quickly went from a feeling of confidence and capability to feeling helpless, hopeless and incredibly frustrated.”

United Way’s support for programs and partnerships addressing critical issues in our community is guided by the results of our Community Needs Assessment. The Needs Assessment identified and quantified key issues affecting the well-being of our community in order to better focus local efforts in creating positive change.

In January 2013, United Way completed its rigorous 2013–2015 investment process for human service programs and initiatives in Education, Income, and Health & Wellness.

Thanks to the generosity of thousands of donors, 86 local programs and four special community-wide initiatives will receive $4.6M in funding for each of the next two years.

Program funding is only a part of United

United Way provides $367,000 in additional funding to the following essential services, which help to ensure that Western New York has access to important health and human service information, sound disaster relief and emergency services, and effective infrastructure support.

• 2-1-1 Western New York Provides free, easy-to-use assistance, 24 hours/day, seven days/week by calling 2-1-1.

The trained specialists serve as an important resource on issues such as crisis counseling, suicide prevention, flu shots, food, shelter, unemployment, and more.

• American Red Cross—Greater Buffalo Chapter When disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, and health and emotional health services to address basic human needs and assist individuals and families in resuming their normal daily activities independently.

• Labor Emergency Services United Way and Organized Labor are partners working together to improve community well-being by connecting those in need with essential services and resources.

Education Critical Issues Key Findings School Readiness Estimates suggest that 54% of young children enter school unprepared to learn.

Behavioral/Social-Emotional Concerns 200+ young children were suspended from kindergarten.

Academic Performance Students in seven local school districts perform worse than their peers across NYS on standardized tests. In five local school districts, less than 80% of students graduate with their peers.

Social-Emotional Concerns Compared to their peers in NYS and nationally, local students report higher levels of high-risk behaviors and a greater percentage of sadness, hopelessness, poverty, food insecurity, trauma and attempted suicide. Bullying and cyber-bullying creates an unsafe school environment for many.

Engagement 40% of Buffalo Public School students were chronically absent, missing 10% of school days or more.

Life Skills/College & Career Readiness Focus groups emphasized need for life skills (budgeting, home management…), employment training, and career advisement so that students can better understand their education options and make decisions about their future.

Income Critical Issues Key Findings Affordable Housing Only 67% of housing units in Erie County and 55% of housing units in Buffalo are considered affordable housing. More than half of individuals living in renter-occupied housing pay 30% or more of their income on housing.

Homelessness 5,000+ individuals experienced homelessness in 2011. Increasing numbers of newly unemployed and financially fragile families are turning to service providers for help.

Income Supports 35,000+ households in Buffalo and nearly 56,000 households in Erie County secured assistance from SNAP (Food Stamps). From 2006 to 2010, there has been a decline in TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) participation.

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Utilization of EITC has increased since 2004, with a $20M increase in EITC dollars secured in Erie County.

Financial Literacy 38,000+ low-income residents in Buffalo and Erie County are in need of financial literacy assistance.

Adult Educational Attainment 47% of adults in Buffalo have a high school diploma or less, leading to lower labor force participation and earnings.

Employment Assistance High rates of unemployment and underemployment lead to high rates of poverty. 55% of the population in Buffalo has an income at or below 200% of the poverty threshold­—the minimum experts suggest is sufficient to make ends meet.

Brana & Tim W.*, North Buffalo, NY When my son Tim was born, I didn’t know what quality childcare looked like. After his 2nd birthday, I noticed he was struggling with communicating, and was frustrated and acting out. His daycare was not able to help, so I contacted Read to Succeed Buffalo. They directed me to Project CARE, a United Way funded program that helps childcare professionals meet the unique developmental needs of children like Tim. They discovered he had a severe speech delay and helped me get him evaluated for early intervention services. After just a few months of services and with support from Project CARE, his behavior improved and he grew academically and socially. Two years later, he is on track to succeed in school.

Emilio R.*, Lancaster, NY I’ve always been a hard worker, and when I found myself unemployed with no job prospects, I reached out for help from Goodwill Industries of Western New York Employment & Training Services, a United Way funded program. They assigned me to their processing worksite where I unloaded trucks for eight weeks. They also taught me job development skills and how to look for a job. I took their advice and training to heart and worked hard to fulfill all the requirements of the program. They were impressed by my work ethic and positive attitude, and I was hired quickly at an order fulfillment company where I make a good hourly wage. Now I have hope for a more stable future for my family and me.

Serving Those Who Serve Our Country Over the past several years, the local population of returning military veterans has grown significantly.

There are nearly 70,000 military veterans in Erie County, and approximately 15% of veterans living in the City of Buffalo are unemployed—with many military families struggling to make ends meet.

United Way and our CASH partners are honored to have assisted 1,429 hardworking veterans/ military households by providing them with free tax prep services in 2012.

When we provide people in need with resources that help them live safer and healthier lives, we improve the well-being of the whole community.

The Goal Create a vibrant and thriving community by promoting physical, social and emotional health for infants, children, adults and seniors.

The Need In Erie County, more than 60% of adults are obese or overweight; in 2011, there were nearly 8,800 calls to local domestic violence hotlines; and our growing senior population is among the oldest in the nation.

Diane G.*, Buffalo, NY In recent years, I’ve suffered from COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which makes it hard to breathe. However, I started attending health and wellness presentations and exercise classes at Schiller Park Senior Center, which is part of Schiller Park Community Services, a United Way funded program. I’m learning to eat healthier, exercise properly and manage my illness better. Now I walk, dance and do stretch-band exercises twice a week. It’s very relaxing, helps me feel better and I get to spend time with some very nice people. I’m at the Center almost every day now, and although my disease is a progressive one, I know there are steps I can take to live healthier and have good quality of life.

Since 1917, hundreds of thousands of people have given their time, talent, resources and passion to transform the quality of life for people in need in Buffalo and Erie County through United Way’s volunteer programs and initiatives.

• Our volunteers are instrumental in helping United Way accomplish its mission • They contribute thousands of hours of service to support programs that make our community stronger • Their service amounts to significant savings in operational costs for United Way and our partner agencies • They provide a critical source of support for agencies that do not have the resources to accomplish their goals without the help of volunteers

Volunteerism fills a critical need in WNY More than 150 local nonprofit agencies offer ways to volunteer, from one-day events to ongoing projects.

Here are some examples of how United Way has supported our community through volunteerism:

“ Without the dedication and passion of our volunteers, United Way would not be able to create lasting change in Western New York. They are a testament to the power of action for the greater good in our community.”

Family Volunteer Day Parents, children, grandparents and neighbors joined together for a fun, rewarding day of helping local nonprofits complete projects at our third annual Family Volunteer Day. Over the past four years, 800 people contributed 2,200 hours of service.

Community Baby Shower Area companies hosted baby showers and collected baby items—such as diapers, baby wipes, sleep sacks and digital thermometers—to help give local at-risk moms and infants a great start. In the past two years, more than 84 companies held showers, and nearly 800 gift bags were donated

Business Meets Community United Way works closely with local businesses to find corporate volunteer activities that meet the company’s needs and interests. Over the last three years, 2,300 employees from 108 companies have given 11,900 hours of service to local agencies.

Volunteer Recognition Breakfast 140 volunteers attended United Way’s annual breakfast, which was held during National Volunteer Week. The event featured guest speaker and longtime community volunteer David Hore, co-president of PCB Group, Inc.

Thousands step up to help The largest single-day volunteer effort in WNY brought 3,100+ volunteers together to complete 177 projects that helped improve our community at United Way’s 21st Annual Day of Caring on August 21, 2013.

137 companies in Erie County enthusiastically participated in the day’s activities at 120 local agencies for a total of 14,166 service hours. Projects included gardening, cleaning, landscaping, painting, maintenance and organizing. Volunteers also served lunch to seniors, mentored young people or chaperoned field trips.

The event was followed by a volunteer fair where individuals could connect with nonprofit organizations to find opportunities to get involved in future volunteer efforts.

21 years of Service For more than two decades, people from companies throughout Buffalo and Erie County have gathered to lend a hand to nonprofit agencies. In the past 21 years, volunteers have donated nearly 421,000 service hours.

Endowment & Planned Giving Program In Gratitude United Way of Buffalo & Erie County is honored and deeply grateful to be the recipient of a very generous and unexpected $2.7 million endowment gift from the estate of Mrs. Peggy Elfvin, widow of the late Judge John Elfvin. Judge Elfvin passed away in 2009 and Mrs. Elfvin passed away in October of 2012. The Elfvins were longtime supporters of United Way and members of the Tocqueville Society.

This undesignated bequest— by far the largest gift our United Way has ever received—will be placed in United Way’s Endowment Fund to help support longterm financial stability, future programming initiatives and ongoing operating costs.

Leaving a Legacy Over the past year, United Way has begun to create an Endowment and Planned Giving program to help ensure the longevity of our life-changing programs, collaborations and initiatives, in addition to offsetting some of the essential operating costs that support the work we do in our key platform areas and beyond.

The development of a robust endowment fund will help maximize the amount of donor dollars that can be directed toward critical programs that help people in need in Western New York and strengthen the entire community.

It will also help to alleviate some of the day-to-day costs, allowing our skilled staff and extensive network of volunteers to concentrate on addressing the community’s most pressing issues. Please consider United Way in your estate plan.

Sandi H.*, Buffalo, NY During my pregnancy, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and was told I had to be hospitalized immediately. With other children at home, and my husband at work at his new job, I was scared and didn’t know what to do.

I decided to go to Jericho Road Ministries and get help from the Priscilla Project—a United Way funded program that helps pregnant refugee women live a healthy lifestyle during and after pregnancy. The staff took action right away. They called my husband’s office to explain the situation so his employer would give him the time he needed to care for our children. They checked me into the hospital, explained the process to me, and helped me communicate with staff so I could select healthy food for my meals. I’m happy to say that I delivered a healthy baby two months later, and my whole family is doing well.

Because of all the problems at home, we weren’t doing very well in school or behaving like we should. But for the past two years, we’ve been going to Valley Community Association’s Striving for Excellence Youth Program, which is funded by United Way. The staff is kind to us and they help us deal with all the bad stuff going on in our lives.

My sister and I are getting good grades now, doing our homework every day, and going to afterschool activities. Knowing we have adults in our life that we can count on makes a big difference.

Taking Strides in Preparing Youth for High School On Time to 9 is a new summer support program created by United Way to help 8th grade Buffalo Public School students who are in danger of not being promoted to high school on time.

United Way contracted with seven local service agencies to bring enriched tutoring, skill-building and attendance support

Valuable training Local nonprofits benefit each year from numerous United Way training programs that:

In addition to attending summer school, the students also attended On Time to 9 sessions to receive intensive assistance for subjects or skills of focus that had been problematic for them.

Mya K.*, Buffalo, NY It has been a long and difficult journey from Burma to Buffalo, including separation from my husband and family and time in a refugee camp overseas with my young daughter. Now we are reunited with my elderly mother and I am responsible for supporting them. With the help of Project Integration—a United Way funded program at Jewish Family Service—I enrolled in English as a Second Language classes and received help to meet my family’s basic needs while employment counselors helped me find work. They also helped us adjust to the new things we were experiencing here, like banking and grocery shopping.

A month later, I got a full-time job with benefits at a store. I am so happy to have a better understanding of this culture and to be able to take care of my mother and daughter.

Investments Program investments represent only a portion of the organization’s total investment in improving quality of life in Erie County.

In all, United Way invested more than $14.2 million back into the Erie County community last year including: • $4,587,000 in program investments for Education, Income and Health & Wellness, as well as special initiatives, including American Red Cross Disaster Relief Services, 2-1-1 WNY Information & Referral Services, and Labor Services • $2,484,000 in grant funding secured on behalf of partner agencies in the community • $2,306,000 in United Way initiatives and activities, such as Creating Assets, Savings and Hope (CASH), Closing the Gap, and the Erie/Niagara Birth to 8 Coalition • $4,544,000 in contributions designated by donors to specific agencies through the 2012 Campaign To obtain a copy of our Audited Financial Statements, call 887-2626 or visit uwbec.org.
