Message from the 2011 United Way Community Campaign Chair Like many of you, I have been involved with United Way as both a donor and volunteer. When I relocated to the Hartford area last year, this community welcomed me with open arms. Now, I am proud to give back as the chair of the 2011 United Way Community Campaign.

In the midst of economic uncertainty and challenging times, now is the time our communities need you the most— to stabilize and invest in today and tomorrow. Leaders Tocqueville Society

In Giving

The United Way Tocqueville Society is named after the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville, who so admired the generosity of Americans and their willingness to help one another in times of need with open hearts and with no thought of reward.

In the nineteenth century, he toured America and was greatly moved by the country’s spirit of voluntary effort for the common good. Thank you for continuing this legacy of giving.

Members of the Society are recognized for their gift of $10,000 or more in the local United Way Tocqueville Society and Constitution Society Leaders in Giving publication and in the annual United Way national registry. Nationally, there are 25,000 members of the United Way Tocqueville Society from 430 communities. Their contributions total $500 million cumulative dollars for education, income and health.

Locally, United Way Tocqueville Society members’ gifts totaled $4.6 million, or 18 percent of all dollars raised in the 2010 United Way Community Campaign.

Under the leadership of Ray and Mary Necci and Lou and Rhoda Obermeier, 51 individuals became members of the United Way Tocqueville Society for the first time in 2010, bringing the total number of members to 311.

We wish to thank each of these donors for their commitment to our community and for their outstanding leadership.

We would like to extend a special thank you to George and Carol Reider for hosting the Tocqueville Society in their home this spring.

Early Childhood Education

If kids are not ready to learn when they get to kindergarten, they are less likely to read by fourth grade, and kids who are not on track academically by fourth grade are less likely to graduate from high school.

Goal: By 2014, we want 1,900 children in early childhood programs supported by Community Investment to enter kindergarten ready to learn each year.

Where we are: Last year, almost 1,000 children developed the skills to succeed in kindergarten, such as counting and recognizing the alphabet.

Financial Stability

One in five families in our area can’t make ends meet or afford basic needs including housing, food, child care, health care, transportation, and taxes.

Goal: We want 1,500 additional families to meet the Connecticut Self-Sufficiency Standard by 2014.

Where we are: Last year, 550 people in job training programs supported by Community Investment found work, nearly 1,880 people improved their career skills, and more than 1,400 adults learned to read and write.

Academic Success

Kids who are not on track academically by fourth grade are less likely to graduate from high school. Quality of out-of-school education and parent involvement are key to kids doing well in school.

Goal: By 2014, we want 4,600 youth in Community Investment-supported programs to improve academically each year.

Where we are: Last year, nearly 2,000 young people in after-school programs improved their academic performance and more than 1,000 adults improved their parenting skills.

I have the privilege of helping hundreds of students every year learn the literacy skills they need to get jobs that can sustain their families. Writing a check to United Way is probably the easiest way I’ve found to listen to my mother.”
