THE DIFFERENCE GIVING MAKES IMPACT OF GIVING TO UWCSEA 2014/2015

MESSAGE FROM

CHRIS EDWARDS Thank you for your generosity and support. We are grateful beyond measure to all who have enhanced the educational offer of UWCSEA. There is transformational power in collective giving. Gifts to UWCSEA have an immediate impact on life at the College, and over the past twelve months have paved the way for a number of remarkable projects and initiatives—many of which would, quite simply, not have been possible without your support, whilst others would have taken us many years to effectively implement.

Your generosity has helped directly in making education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future

We have put together this impact of giving report to detail the range of programmes and projects impacted by gifts to UWCSEA in 2014/2015. As you will read, giving to the College makes a significant difference in many areas; it is with your support that we have continued to increase our scholar numbers year on year: and we aspire to greater numbers still as we seek to increase socio-economic diversity within the College. We have also been able to invest in a wide range of initiatives that have enhanced teaching and learning and advanced our work to instil environmental leadership as a core skill amongst our students. Your generosity has helped directly in making education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Thank you for all you have done, and continue to do in support of UWCSEA. Chris Edwards Head of College UWC South East Asia

MAKING A DIFFERENCE:

THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME It is by bringing together students from around the globe and educating them to embrace challenge and take responsibility for shaping a better world that we will fulfil our mission to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Making this transformative educational experience available to students who would not otherwise have such an opportunity is an incredible gift, one with far-reaching impact. These scholarships not only benefit the scholars, but through their presence and engagement, the scholars enrich the learning experience throughout the UWCSEA community. Over the next few pages you will see the remarkable ways some of our scholars have benefited—and contributed—thanks to gifts like yours.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME | 10

From Senegal to Stanford In 2014/2015, 95 scholars benefited from a UWC education thanks to support from the UWCSEA community. A scholarship can change a life. Ibrahima Tounkara, Scholar from Senegal, Class of 2015

I am ready to embark on a new journey knowing that more opportunities will be waiting for me. Thank you.

When I was in Senegal, I was always curious about the world around me. One summer while taking some classes in the capital city, I came to find out about a UWC scholarship. I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to better myself and receive a world-class education. I successfully applied and that was when my life changed significantly. UWCSEA presented a world of opportunities that would have been out of reach for me in my home country. Coming from a place where the education system is very basic, I came to realise that academic success is not the only way to define a student’s ability. The College not only provided a great education, but it helped me to blossom into someone useful and enabled me to see the world and understand how I can make a positive contribution to society. In Grade 11, I was selected to participate in the Initiative for Peace conference held in Timor-Leste. The experience highlighted the different issues happening around the world and inspired me to travel around the villages in Chiang Mai, Thailand during Project Week, where I taught English language. Seeing the world from new perspectives shaped my thinking and influenced the path I plan to take in the future. Without the UWCSEA scholarship, I would not be the person I am today— let alone be offered a full scholarship to study at Stanford University in the USA. Maybe I will become a leader, maybe a doctor, maybe a chemist, an engineer, or policy maker. I cannot tell. What I am sure of though is that I will be among those who will act for the betterment of others. I am ready to embark on a new journey knowing that more opportunities will be waiting for me. Thank you. Ibrahima’s two-year IB Diploma scholarship was made possible thanks to a donation by a UWCSEA family. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME | 12

When small gifts combine to make a big difference Small gifts, when combined together, can have a huge impact on the life of a scholar. Each year since 2008, Annual Fund donations have allowed us to welcome an additional scholar to our College community. Anamaria Golemac, Scholar from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Class of 2015, received a twoyear scholarship to UWCSEA thanks to UWCSEA’s Annual Fund. Growing up in the aftermath of war, Anamaria was inspired to learn how communities can live in peace with one another. Her time at UWCSEA has taught her so much.

“The fact that so many unique viewpoints and opinions are expressed and debated in this community marks it as a truly peaceful and hopeful environment of tomorrow.” Before commencing her studies at Skidmore College, USA, in autumn 2015, Anamaria and her sister ran an educational camp to teach English, entrepreneurship and life skills to orphans in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Your generosity has been truly appreciated and as a donor you are someone I want to be later in life. Thank you for everything! Hvala Vam za sve!”

Staff giving enhances the UWCSEA experience While a UWCSEA scholarship covers all of the basic costs of studying at the College, there are many incredible opportunities beyond the classroom that help make the UWCSEA experience even more rewarding. Thanks to generous gifts by College staff, 21 scholars participated in some remarkable extra-curricular activities. Anita Chepchirchir, Scholar from Kenya, Class of 2015, travelled to The Hague to participate in Model United Nations. The experience provided an excellent introduction to an area she hopes to be involved with in the future.

“I am considering peacekeeping as a future service and it was great to hear what solutions people have to counter terrorist activities in the Middle East. It was truly an eye-opening experience.” Thirteen scholars were involved in Initiative for Peace (IfP) annual conferences in Timor-Leste and Mae Sot, Thailand, designed to bring young leaders together to build future peaceful relations. Fabio Soares, Scholar from Brazil, Class of 2015, said:

“I had the opportunity to interact with people who grew up in vastly different environments from me. Although I can’t say with certainty that I’ve changed someone’s life, the conference has definitely changed mine.”

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME | 14

Giving so families can be together Many of our scholars travel great distances to take up their places at UWCSEA. Some have never been away from home before and saying goodbye to loved ones is not easy. Thanks to a generous gift to the College for the past two years, a number of scholars have been able to make the long journey home to see their families during the December break. Sunhay Try, Scholar from Cambodia, Class of 2016

“It was such a great opportunity to visit my family in Cambodia. I got up early to jog with my mum, helped with my dad’s business, and I met up with my friends and flew kites.” Some were unable to return home for a variety of reasons, but this gift allowed them to spend the break with friends. Sia Cecilia, Scholar from Sierra Leone, Class of 2016

“I feel so lucky to have received such a generous and selfless gift. It was not possible for me to go home due to the Ebola outbreak and so instead I was able to take up a very kind invitation to spend the break with my friend’s family in Kolkata.”

The gift of adventure Most UWCSEA scholars receive scholarships to attend university. Before continuing their educational journey, many would love to spend time supporting service initiatives, but are unable to for financial reasons. A special three-year gift made to the Gap Year Programme by a generous parent allowed scholars to put their UWCSEA experience into immediate action and give back to society. Eyner Farid Roman Lopez, Scholar from Peru, Class of 2014, spent four months in the Philippines teaching in a rural school and a month housebuilding in an area affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

“The journey through my gap year has been full of surprises. I visited places I never imagined I would, and I found teaching a very productive way to give back to a community that welcomed me with open arms. I no longer feel just a member of Peru, but part of a global community.” Klára Vyhnánková, Scholar from Czech Republic, Class of 2014, travelled to Timor-Leste to work in a small clinic for four months. Arriving with no medical experience to a place that was still recovering from years of civil war and where medical facilities were very basic, Klára felt compelled to do more to support the work of the staff. Together with friends and family she raised US$10,000 towards the future development of the clinic.

“One thing Timor-Leste taught me is that you can always find ways to help a community, even though it may seem to you that you only come with a few skills.” SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME | 16

MAKING A DIFFERENCE:

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY The College is committed to making environmental stewardship a significant part of every student’s education. The stories that follow demonstrate how your gifts have helped to enhance our campuses and educate our community on the responsibility they have to conserve and protect the environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY | 18

Learning through doing “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin A family’s passion for the environment has provided a wonderful opportunity for students to take a lead role in protecting it. The Kirtida and Bharat Mekani Rainforest Restoration Project is rescuing endangered tree species from the edge of extinction. In a newly installed rooftop nursery on East Campus and in a specially created nursery at Dover Campus, students are working hard to encourage higher survival rates for over 600 seedlings from mainly vulnerable rainforest species. The nurseries provide an immersive environmental experience; allowing students to not only learn about the science of horticulture, but to take responsibility for nurturing our living world. In an urban environment such as Singapore, access to green space provides many benefits for the College community; including increased biodiversity on campus as native species are drawn to the green space, an inspirational learning space, and opportunities for young people to interact on a daily basis, with nature. Nathan Hunt, Director of Sustainability, UWCSEA

“This incredible gift has allowed the College to come closer to its ambition to develop the skills and qualities in students that are needed to build a more sustainable future—a future where practical environmental stewardship becomes a major part of every child’s education.” These nurseries were made possible thanks to a very generous gift from Foundation Trustee, Kirtida Mekani and her husband Bharat Mekani.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY | 20

Supporting student-led initiatives One of the key components in the College’s learning programme is encouraging students to share their ideas and lead initiatives of their own. Inspired by his Grade 5 project, Raghav Shukla, Class of 2015 led the Solar for Dover project.

“Looking back, I would not have been prompted to investigate solar energy, had it not been for UWCSEA. My journey of exploring and tackling the issue on environmental sustainability has been phenomenal.” In 2014/2015, 264 solar panels for the Junior School Sports Hall were kindly funded by AT Capital Pte Ltd. Gifts through the Annual Fund have led to the community adoption of a further 72 panels, including a class collection organised by the current Grade 5 at Dover in honour of Raghav’s achievement.

Greening the East Campus The Adopt a Tree programme is a special initiative to green the East Campus. Last year, 19 additional indigenous trees were adopted and planted. The campus now boasts over 130 trees, all of which are accompanied by personalised individual plaques that demonstrate the strength of the community and the importance of trees in our world.

Helping students tackle environmental issues Thanks to a generous three-year gift to the College, two new environmental education leadership positions were created to implement a world-class sustainability programme on each campus. This programme will be further enhanced by the introduction of school-based environmental leadership roles in 2015/2016. Adam Erickson, Coordinator of Environmental Stewardship, UWCSEA East

“Successfully introducing and coordinating sustainability initiatives requires dedicated time and effort. This gift has afforded us time out of the classroom to organise the environmental projects that are helping us live the College’s mission to create a sustainable future.”

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY | 22

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING Teaching and learning in today’s ever-changing world requires more adaptation and innovation than ever. Investing in our teachers and the continued development and enhancement of our educational programme allows UWCSEA to provide an unparalleled learner-centric experience, both inside and outside of the classroom. Your gifts have helped us build on the exceptional experience and high standards of UWCSEA.

TEACHING AND LEARNING | 24

Teaching a love of reading and writing Annual gifts have enabled us to invest in a transformational learning programme. Reading and Writing Workshop is a structured programme that methodically and strategically teaches students to read and write in a critical way. Researched and developed by the Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, gifts to the Annual Fund enabled UWCSEA to formally adopt the programme as a core method of teaching reading and writing in the Primary School. Studying reading development research and applying it in our K1 to Grade 5 classes led to inspiring results, with students displaying increased engagement with texts; a skill that transfers directly across the entire curriculum and directly enhances a student’s ability to engage completely with the academic element of the learning programme. Wendy Jones, Literacy Coach, UWCSEA Dover

“When you walk into our Primary School classrooms today you can feel an excitement around literacy. Our students now write with a passion … and we observe spirited discussions about current book choices and favourite characters and authors.” The programme has since been expanded into Middle School to ensure students continue to receive support to further their reading and writing skills. Gifts to the Annual Fund have also created dedicated Middle School libraries in each of the Middle School English classrooms; ensuring the right books are in the hands of students when they need them. Rohan Kumar, Grade 6, UWCSEA East feels that the classroom library is a great addition to the class.

“It has a variety of genres, both fiction and nonfiction and there’s nothing better than to have a full range of books to choose from.”

TEACHING AND LEARNING | 26

Enhancing teaching and learning Supporting our passionate and skilled teaching community to be the best they can be is at the heart of our professional development programme. Annual Fund donations have been invested into a number of projects that enhance the teaching and learning experience for all. Looking for Learning is a unique professional development tool that helps teachers effectively evaluate one another’s lessons and look for additional learning opportunities. Ted Cowan, High School Vice Principal, UWCSEA East

“Looking for Learning enhances the culture of collaboration, coaching and openness between colleagues to improve existing and acquire new teaching strategies. It allows students to see teachers as learners, as well as impact specific students’ learning by tailoring approaches to meet their individual needs.” The Study of Differentiation programme is a process in which differences between learners are accommodated so that all students in a group have the best possible chance of learning. A generous donor funded a specialist workshop with education leader Bronwyn MacLeod. Allison Ziemer, Junior School Vice Principal, UWCSEA Dover

“The workshop with Bronwyn enabled us to have important discussions about how we differentiate for all students in our classrooms and gain insight into what they may be thinking and how we can meet their needs more effectively.”

Debi Keyte-Hartland, an Early Childhood Education specialist worked with our teachers to further develop the best practices and understanding of the way children learn through play. Chris Fensom, Infant School Principal, UWCSEA Dover, 1991–2015

“When children enter K1, they are proficient and capable investigators who have spent four years testing hypotheses as well as gaining experience and knowledge of the world around them. Theorists have debated the value of play for many years and much has been written about the purposes and characteristics of different types of play.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

GIVING STORIES UWCSEA has a wonderfully supportive community—the generosity you have shown has had an enormous impact on life at the College. The next few pages highlight just some of the reasons why members of our community have generously supported UWCSEA. Thank you for making a gift and for making a difference.

GIVING STORIES | 30

Giving so more students can experience a UWC education UWCSEA is proud of its strong alumni community. Many have chosen to make a gift to UWCSEA in honour of their time here and to help others access the transformational UWC experience. Robert Milton, Class of 1978 and Lizanne Milton, Class of 1983 established The Lizanne and Robert A. Milton UWCSEA Endowed Scholarship in 2008 to provide the gift of a UWCSEA education in perpetuity. Their incredible generosity has now fully funded two scholars from Vietnam to complete their IB Diploma; Ngoc Yen Chi Huynh, Class of 2014 is now at Georgia Tech, USA, and Vu Phuong Anh, Class of 2015 will be studying at Wellesley College, USA. Robert A. Milton, Class of 1978

“Education is critical, and I’ve found there to be few experiences in life as fulfilling as enabling a child who is really capable, who would not otherwise get the chance at a world-class education, to benefit from one.” In 2008, at the first ever official reunion event organised by the College, the Class of 1978 decided to support a scholar to attend UWCSEA in honour of their 30-year anniversary. Three scholars have since benefitted from their continued generosity; Christine Odegi, Class of 2011 from Kenya went onto Colorado College, USA. Kengthsagn Louis, Class of 2013 from Haiti went on to study at Skidmore College, USA and Raquel Saldia Marquez, Class of 2015 from Bolivia has gone on to Middlebury College, USA. Kush Handa, Class of 1978

“It was only in retrospect that I realised how fortunate I was to be educated at UWCSEA and it is important for me now to help others have that opportunity.”

Since 2008, the number of scholarship recipients at UWCSEA has doubled. Generous gifts to UWCSEA have played a key role in the continued expansion of this significant programme. In 2014/2015, thanks to the support of our community, 95 scholars from 45 different countries were able to benefit from the transformational experience of a UWC education—15 of those were fully funded through gifts to the College. Suhardiman Hartono and Lina Ijawan, UWCSEA parents and supporters of the Head of College Scholarship, which provides scholarships for students from areas of conflict.

“As parents of two students at the College, we have seen first-hand the value of living and learning within such a diverse community and believe that only good things will come from educating students from so many different nationalities and cultures together.” Lee Hysan Foundation, which has fully funded five scholarships for students from minority communities in Hong Kong.

“UWCSEA’s stimulating learning experience offers our scholars a platform to flourish, demonstrate their full potential and contribute back to the community.”

GIVING STORIES | 32

Giving for the benefit of the College The incredibly supportive Parents’ Associations (PA) on both campuses have gone one step further in their dedication to UWCSEA by setting up Endowment Funds to specifically support high profile and impactful activities. Veronique Brenninkmeijer, Chair of PA, UWCSEA Dover, 2014–2015

“The members of the Parents’ Association Dover unanimously agreed that we wanted to support UWCSEA with an Endowment. We all have a vested interest in the continuous success of the school.” Julia Chapman, Chair of PA, UWCSEA East, 2013–2015

“We feel it is pertinent for the parent community to make a contribution to the programmes designed to enhance the learning experience students receive at UWCSEA.”

Giving back before moving on Since 2008, our Grade 12 students have been coming together to leave a special gift to the College, and to those following in their footsteps. The Class of 2015 on Dover funded the creation of a unique canvas painting featuring all 15 UWCs. On East, the graduating class made a contribution to the Scholarship Programme. Niamh O’Reilly, Class of 2015

“I donated to the class gift because I felt that UWC had given me such an incredible high school experience, full of amazing opportunities and wonderful memories; it only felt right to give back a token of appreciation.”

Giving time and talent The Foundation’s Board of Trustees are a key volunteer group that have committed considerable time, energy and resources to supporting the continued development of UWCSEA. It is only with their guidance and expertise that we have been able to achieve so much. Kirtida Mekani, founding member of the UWCSEA Foundation and generous supporter of the Kirtida and Bharat Mekani Environmental Sustainability Fund and the pioneering IDEAS Hub at UWCSEA Dover.

“I believe that in giving to a College like UWCSEA, which teaches students to learn through doing and builds positive partnerships locally and globally, you are creating a ripple effect where many communities stand to benefit. It is a strategic investment in the future.” GIVING STORIES | 34

Giving in honour of fond memories The Kurt Hahn Society recognises those members of our community who have elected to include UWCSEA in their wills. To be remembered in this manner is a great honour and we are humbled to know the College has impacted their lives in such a special way. Tejas Ewing, Class of 1998 and son of Iain Ewing, a generous donor who left an endowment gift to the College as part of his will.

“Leaving a legacy was a way for Iain to consider how he could continue to help people in a sustainable and meaningful way, and a special way for us to stay connected. As I make sure his bequest is carried out, I have such fond memories of his desire to help people and the fact that he continues to help people even today.”

Giving beyond the day job Our Facilities team work tirelessly to maintain and clean our campus every day—ensuring a comfortable environment for us. However, wanting to do more for the College, the Dover team came together to make a donation to the Scholarship Programme. Tay Wee Lam, Facilities Supervisor, UWCSEA Dover

“We hope that through education, scholars will become better people and gain more knowledge than they already have.”

Giving to causes that matter There are many ways to support the continued development of UWCSEA and many of our donors choose to make a gift to a specific programme or area of work that they have a personal affinity with. The Shripriya Ramanan Artist-in-Residence Endowment has given the Art departments on both campuses the opportunity to bring in specialised artists to work with the students to create unique installations. Shripriya Ramanan and Ramanan Raghavendran, parents of alumni

“Kurt Hahn wrote about the importance of developing the whole person, and he alluded specifically to ‘an enterprising curiosity’ and ‘above all, compassion.’ We are deeply interested in art as a vehicle for nurturing curiosity in young minds. We have already seen that our gift has been used to educate students about art and artists in the region, which takes children beyond just curiosity to the spirit of compassion.”

GIVING STORIES | 36

Giving to improve College facilities Last year the Fitness Centre at UWCSEA East welcomed a CrossFit training room called the Dragon’s Den. It was funded by the Head of Campus at UWCSEA East, James Dalziel and Vice Principal of High School, Ted Cowen who made generous gifts to the Annual Fund to ensure this specialised inhouse fitness facility could benefit the larger community at school. James Dalziel, Head of Campus, UWCSEA East

“We hoped that with the creation of the Dragon’s Den CrossFit gym on the East Campus, students and staff will engage in challenging physical activity, share the pain of effort with others, and discover that there is more in them than they think.”

Giving to make a difference We are fortunate to have the support of so many volunteers who are passionate about promoting the impact that giving to the College can have. They have generously donated time to helping us reach out to our community and are absolutely vital to the continued growth of our fundraising programmes. Susanna Zilliacus, Parent Ambassador and mother to two daughters – Classes of 2015 and 2017

“Our school is providing an amazing transformational experience to our children. As parents, we should feel obliged to do what we can to extend this experience to other children around the world. Every child deserves the chance.”

Giving to support continued diversity The Middle School Student Leadership Team at East Campus has raised funds for the last three years in support of the Scholarship Programme. Marianne Yong-Macdonald, Middle School Vice Principal, UWCSEA East

“The contributions by the scholars to our school learning environment and community are invaluable. We hope that by supporting the Scholarship Programme, we can provide more scholarship opportunities as well as allow our students to understand the positive impacts of giving to society.
