Message from the Head of Campus Dear Graduates, Every name on this list of graduates has a story to share about how they arrived at this special point in time as members of the Class of 2020. Some of you have been at UWCSEA for two years and for others it has been fourteen years. As this chapter draws to a close, remember that each stage of life creates an opportunity to build and renew our ‘personal toolkit’. Periodically we might clean or re-organise it, but I hope that the most important parts of your toolkit stay near the top no matter where you are headed next. They include your understanding of how to make informed and principled choices; of how to persevere even when that feels tough to do and to know what it means to be kind and care for those within and beyond your community. Regardless of how many years you have been at UWCSEA, you have learned together and grown to become UWCSEA’s first graduating class of the decade—a remarkable group! We are all so very proud of your accomplishments. COVID-19 may cause unexpected detours but we know that you’ve got this and are ready to tackle whatever comes next. All the very best for your next chapter, Elizabeth Bray Head of UWCSEA Dover

Message from the High School Principal Dear Graduating Class of 2020, Amongst you there are 44 students who have been here since K1/K2; 156 who have been here since Grade 6; 242 who have been here since Grade 9; 282 since Grade 10; and 51 who joined us in Grade 11. Your legacy in the College is a profound one. This is not simply because of your many combined years of attendance, but also because you had the courage to challenge the status quo, pursue your potential and grasp the many opportunities the College offers. Amongst you are the quiet leaders who advocated persistently for change and celebrated the successes of others. Amongst you are the writers, musicians, political advocates, scientists, mathematicians, athletes, humanitarians, artists, dancers, thespians—the actors and thinkers—who through your own unique ways inspire us. While each of your stories are unique, they are interconnected and will continue to be as alumni. Your story is made all the more unique by a pandemic and your willingness to keep reinventing yourselves with each new adversity. As you reflect on your journey through the College, and the last few months, consider the story you want to tell about yourselves? What has surprised you about your own capacity, adaptability and resilience? Graduation is also a time to express gratitude. While you may not be able to do this in person, reach out to those who have influenced you, challenged you, pushed you beyond what you thought you could do. It is these people who have helped you to become the person you are today. Congratulations to all of you—the Class of 2020. You will not be forgotten and your story will continue to be told well beyond 23 May 2020! Rebecca Butterworth High School Principal

Guest speaker Anne Marie Goetz ’80 Dr Anne Marie Goetz has been Clinical Professor at the NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Global Affairs (CGA) since January 2014. She was a Professorial Fellow in Political Science at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex where she worked since 1991. She also served the United Nations Development Programme in Chad and Guinea in the mid-1980s. While at the UN Dr Goetz spearheaded initiatives to promote women’s empowerment in the UN’s peace building work in post-conflict situations, and to support women’s organisations’ efforts to participate in peace talks and post-conflict decision-making. She spearheaded initiatives to ensure that the Security Council addresses sexual violence in conflict as a tactic of warfare, and to build peacekeepers’ capacities to detect and prevent these abuses. Professor Goetz is the author of seven books on the subjects of gender, politics and policy in developing countries, and on accountability reforms. Professor Goetz has also engaged advisory work related to gender, democratization, and governance, including direct advisory work for developing country governments, for multilateral economic institutions and bilateral donors, and for NGOs. Message from the Student Council To the Class of 2020, A graduation (whether small, big, online or in-person) is a defining moment in our lives. It marks the end of the only chapter we have ever known, with the following pages a mystery and ours to create. It is a unique opportunity to reflect on what has been, and look forward towards what could be. Whether you were at the college for 14 years or just for the IB, the impact we have all had on each other’s lives is undeniable. Whether we like it or not, we are bonded for life over our shared experiences of dodgy camping food, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ spoilers and a weird obsession over the Leavers song. We know that no matter what happens, we will have a place to call home and people to call family. We will never be alone. Whilst this may not be the farewell we wanted, the story of our time at the United World College of South-East Asia will never be forgotten. In August 2030, we will meet again for our 10 year reunion. Some of us may show up with screaming toddlers, others may be about to embark on their 11th gap year. However, we will also be filled with stories to share. I am so excited to see what you do with your one wild and precious life. In the words of everyone’s favourite song, “Go from here with confidence, for all the things to come.” Thank you and I’ll see you on the flipside… Hila Davies Former Chair of Student Council Class of 2020

Message from Heads of Grade Dear Class of 2020, It only seems like yesterday that we were in the main hall and we were addressing you towards the end of your Grade 8 school year. So much has happened in the last four years (two for some of you). When we look back, we are filled with pride at the way in which you have matured and grown since we first met. We are filled with nostalgia for G9 expeditions, curriculum trips, sports events, dance shows, plays, musical events and on and on. All of these events and the many others have been opportunities for you to shine; and shine you have! We are continually impressed by the sheer volume of talent in the grade across all of the elements of school life from academics to service and everything in between. This, however impressive, will not be our abiding memory of the grade. That is reserved for the smaller acts of kindness that we witnessed throughout our time with you. These emanated from the grade as a whole and were too numerous to count. But, over and over again we saw students supporting, consoling, encouraging, cajoling and above all caring for their peers. To quote the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak: “Now more than at any time in our history, we will be judged by our capacity for compassion … If you are to be judged by such a yardstick, you can be confident of passing with flying colours.” Simon Bignell and Esperanza Gutierrez Heads of Grade 12

Message from Alumni Relations Congratulations to the Class of 2020! Dear Graduates, Welcome to the UWCSEA Alumni Community! The Class of 2020 will always hold a special place in the history and indeed the hearts of the entire UWCSEA community. While your final days on campus were unlike any that could have been imagined, it is often from times of unprecedented challenge and change that we form our most enduring memories. As time passes, I hope that any sadness or disappointment you may be feeling now will be replaced by the fondest of memories from your time at UWCSEA and that your UWC story will be rich as a result of the experiences and relationships you established as students. As you move beyond UWCSEA, our Alumni Relations Team is here to help you build upon those experiences and help you maintain your connections with UWC—including those with teachers, classmates and with over 20,000 alumni living across the globe. Our goal is to remain active and relevant in your life at all ages and stages by offering a wide variety of initiatives to keep you informed, connected and engaged. As we’ve seen so clearly in recent weeks, our ability to remain connected across time and space is becoming ever simpler and more creative, and we sincerely hope that this will lead to even more innovative ways to keep in touch and provide meaningful engagement with our alumni community. Thank you for all that you have contributed to the UWC community thus far and we look forward to hearing about your UWC stories as they come to fruition! Warm regards, Renée, Rae and Siti Alumni Relations Team Stay connected! alumni.uwcsea.edu.sg

Thank you Graduation is always a joyful event to organise and one that perpetually reminds us of the importance of friendship, hope, compassion and education. A virtual celebration is not what we had hoped for at the beginning of this year but nevertheless here we are. We are fortunate that in this technological age we are able to retain this important milestone and connect today to mark the achievements of an amazing, and in many ways unique, graduating class. There has been a lot of work involved in putting together today by many people, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people who have really made it possible. I would like to thank Crystal Chan, the Grade 12 Secretary for everything she does for all of us everyday. Amanda Choy, who has helped make this technically possible and patiently dealt with technical questions, solving many problems along the way. I also want to give my gratitude to today’s hosts and mentors who are all running this ceremony from their living rooms, spare bedrooms and small corners of their homes across Singapore. Additionally I thank our wonderful PA and the Grade 12 Reps who always work with us to the benefit of our students. Finally I would like to thank our students, you have tolerated such uncertainty with resilience, humour and care for each other. Good luck and congratulations. Linsey Lawrence High School Vice Principal
