Introduction by Head of Grade 12 Dear Graduates, At the start of the year I knew a couple of things for certain: there were 243 of you and you were going to be the Class of 2020. While this programme commemorates the achievements of 243 individuals, we should remember that it is a simple symbol for something much bigger and cannot possibly detail the incredible experiences that you have all shared. What follows in this programme is not a list of personal codes and candidate numbers. It’s not a list of subjects, ATLs and attainment grades. It’s not just a list of names. It’s a list of graduates of UWCSEA, of friends with a common experience. Friends who have shared memories, losses, laughter, failure, travels, accomplishments and victories. Friends who have supported one another, picked each other up when they were down. There are friends who have pushed you to speak to someone, friends you can ask for last-minute homework help, and friends who have made you laugh or smile when you needed it the most. More than big, fancy events, it is these friendships that you will treasure forever. These friendships have been forged over years and will create the foundations for who you are today and who you will be in the future. Recent events have indeed forced us to shift our perspectives and change our expectations of what the graduation of the Class of 2020 would look like. But we haven’t had to shift who we are. It could have been that we stamped our feet in annoyance, or we cursed and yelled about the ever-changing decisions. But you didn’t do that. You were optimistic; you were positive; you were grateful; you shared the challenges as a community. You’ve acted with great patience, care and integrity. And while you’ve certainly taken an unprecedented route to graduation, what makes you truly unique is the incredible optimism and resilience with which you’ve made that journey. As this chapter draws to a close, I wish you great success for the future. Gemma Markham Head of Grade 12
Message from the Head of Campus Dear Graduates, It often comes to me that the many, many things that we worry about during a lifetime seldom actually happen. Why are we all hard-wired to worry so much? I’m not really sure but I think if there is any lesson to take away from the extraordinary and unprecedented end to your school careers, it is the great truth that the things that really knock us out of our collective stride are seldom the things that we anticipate or spend our time worrying about. We worry about what people think of us, whether we will be loved, whether we will be happy and at a higher level many of us also worry about some of the big challenges that we see facing the world. Although a global pandemic was a real and present risk for the world was something we already knew, it was probably not high up on any of your worry-lists. Certainly not on mine. So whilst I am really sorry that we couldn’t celebrate the amazing contributions that this Grade has made to life at UWCSEA in the way that would have truly honoured your achievements, I do hope that you take away the determination not to worry quite so much about the things that in the long run don’t matter so much. If you live your life with compassion and integrity, it doesn’t matter at all what people think of you—the people who matter will know you and love you. Happiness is never guaranteed but it tends to follow those people who care about other people and seek fulfilment by celebrating the successes and wellbeing of the people that they support. You will have spent much time in Service during your years on East—I hope that experience has given you insights into the things that really do matter. So it hasn’t been a ‘normal’ end and it won’t be an ‘ordinary’ life that lies ahead for you. May it be extraordinary in all of the right ways and remember that you never stop being a part of this amazing UWCSEA community. Until next time… Graham Silverthorne Head of UWCSEA East
Message from the High School Principal Dear Graduates, You may well be reading this today in 2020 or in a very different world in the far-flung future. If the latter, then I hope you are looking back, happy with what your generation has created in the world, and satisfied with your contribution to that creation, however small. Today, none of us know what that future will look like, but what we can say is that we believe that in your time here you have laid some strong foundations that will serve you well. As you read this on Graduation Day 2020, there may be some sense of loss. I know I am feeling it keenly for you, as I write this; but the truth is that the last couple of difficult months should not overshadow your time here. In future years you will remember the wonderful friendships and remarkable experiences; you will vividly recall the laughter and triumphs, and you’ll also come to see any tears and disappointments very differently. And you’ll treasure all these in differing ways that will become increasingly clear to you over the years. Keep in touch, Nick Alchin High School Principal
Message from the Class of 2020 I believe I speak on behalf of every member of the Class of 2020 from around the world when I say that each day since our graduating year has begun has been beyond unprecedented. Uncertainty has taken a vice-like grip around all of us, a reminder of the crumbling expectations we’ve held of our last few months of high school. It is heartbreaking to say that we are not getting the goodbye we dreamed of – there won’t be a walkway built by the student body to offer us congratulations as we celebrate the last minutes of our final day at school. We won’t get to hug our teachers and give them thanks for their unending patience. We can’t laugh and cheer, side by side, as we watch our friends walk carefully across a decorated black-tiled stage to receive their leather-bound diplomas. But I’ve realised that the circumstance in which I write this message is one that we were always ready for. Why us? Why now? Why does the guilt of wanting the end of my senior year back eat away at me in the middle of a global pandemic? The special quality of the students in our grade has dumbfounded me since I became a part of it, but I can now see why we have it. The answer came to me bit by bit, then suddenly, all at once. It’s us and it’s now because we are the only ones that can find silver linings and opportunities to smile when it seems everything is against us. We can look beyond the fear-splashed headlines and TV screens to find happiness in togetherness, even if it’s through virtual conversations from our bedrooms. To feel alone and scared about the fate of our futures is human, but we are adept and we can transform our lowest moments into feats of power. The UWCSEA East Class of 2020 has had to deal with scenarios unlike any other, and despite the emotional turmoil and regret that we are each able to identify with, it is for this reason that I can confidently claim that we are capable of anything. We were moulded to make history. It is who we are. Though our place in the world is uncertain, our undeniable strength precedes us. And I am beyond certain that each of us will take the hardship we’ve been dealt and shape it into one incredible story to tell. Noshin Saiyaara Class of 2020
Message from Alumni Relations Congratulations to the Class of 2020! Dear Graduates, Welcome to the UWCSEA Alumni Community! The Class of 2020 will always hold a special place in the history and indeed the hearts of the entire UWCSEA community. While your final days on campus were unlike any that could have been imagined, it is often from times of unprecedented challenge and change that we form our most enduring memories. As time passes, I hope that any sadness or disappointment you may be feeling now will be replaced by the fondest of memories from your time at UWCSEA and that your UWC Story will be rich as a result of the experiences and relationships you established as students. As you move beyond UWCSEA, our Alumni Relations Team is here to help you build upon those experiences and help you maintain your connections with UWC - including those with teachers, classmates and with over 20,000 alumni living across the globe. Our goal is to remain active and relevant in your life at all ages and stages by offering a wide variety of initiatives to keep you informed, connected and engaged. As we’ve seen so clearly in recent weeks, our ability to remain connected across time and space is becoming ever simpler and more creative, and we sincerely hope that this will lead to even more innovative ways to keep in touch and provide meaningful engagement with our alumni community. Thank you for all that you have contributed to the UWC Community thus far and we look forward to hearing about your UWC stories as they come to fruition! Warm regards, Renée, Rae and Siti Alumni Relations Team Stay connected! alumni.uwcsea.edu.sg

Thank you from the PA Graduation Team “Life’s roughest storms prove the strength of our anchors.” We meant to send you sailing off the end of an epic double rainbow, but the storm of the current situation had other ideas. Please know and understand that this is not the celebration we had planned for all of you, but regardless we are no less proud of you as a class, as parents, as a community of friends and family we hold near and dear. We want to thank the constant support of the entire UWCSEA community. We are grateful to Communications, Facilities, and Sodexo for helping us to chart so many different directions as we sailed to unknown shores. Thank you to the High School team for your continued support of our committee. Special thanks to Ray for her patient handling of all matters. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Parents’ Association – UWCSEA East for their commitment and assistance, and all the parent volunteers who have supported us through this journey. In light of all the challenges brought on by this year, it is an honour to be a part of such a great team. Congratulations to you all! We couldn’t be more proud of you. Thank you for letting us be a part of your special day. Meena, Liza, Julia, Juhee, and Tabitha 2020 Graduation Committee
