Welcome to the UWCSEA East High School Each year before the start of school, we offer orientation sessions for families to assist in the transition to a new school. Our orientation is designed to provide you with the information required for a successful start to school on the first day; it is not designed to tell you everything there is to know about the UWCSEA East High School. As you can appreciate, there is far more about our curriculum, facilities, programmes and calendar than can be absorbed at once, and so in the orientation we seek to simply provide an overview of the High School programme. We will, therefore, introduce you to the leadership team and provide information pertinent to the first day of school. The rest will all be made clear over subsequent weeks. During orientation you will also be able to purchase school uniforms at the College Shop (we do not expect students to be in uniform for the orientation sessions, but they are expected to be in uniform for the first day of school). We will be offering tours of the campus if possible, which will allow you to view the amazing learning environment that your sons and daughters will experience on a daily basis. Please note that timetables and daily student schedules will be provided on the first day of school. During the first weeks of school, we will host a variety of information sessions for parents and students regarding our Learning Programme. We will provide a full schedule of the information evenings during the orientation session. I look forward to welcoming all students and families to our wonderful, warm and welcoming UWCSEA East community. Warmest regards, Damian Bacchoo High School Principal

Who can help?
Communications
Mentors
Our school is a very busy place, and there are always a lot of things happening, so it can be a challenge to keep up-to-date.
Students see their mentor teacher every day, first thing in the morning. Mentors will keep in touch with you about your overall progress and your general welfare. Your mentor is the first person you can approach with any concerns.
Teachers If you have any questions about your subjects or assignments, it is best to approach your subject teacher for clarification and guidance.
Mentor group outings Mentor group outings are social events organised with your mentor. Some examples of outings are going to the movies, going to a physical activity like laser quest or bowling. These outings will help you get to know your mentor group better.
Heads of Grade Your Head of Grade is responsible for ensuring all students under their care are flourishing, and supporting the school values. Heads of Grade liaise closely with mentors, subject teachers and counsellors to ensure students are provided with the necessary encouragement, guidance and support to reach their potential. You are always welcome to approach your Head of Grade with any ideas or concerns.
Counselling The counsellors at East Campus are available to all students who wish to talk about more personal issues and concerns. Students see the counsellors for a wide variety of reasons including adjusting to a new school or new country. When you consult a counsellor, what you speak about is completely confidential, except in cases of personal risk or harm.
Website and Community Portal The website is a rich resource dedicated to providing information on the College and the High School. Parents and students can login to the Community Portal via our website where you can view information tailored to your family and about your child(ren). Access a number of key systems for the following: • online medical information system (for review and updating) • contact information update system (for review and updating) • student record system (timetable, attendance records, reports and assessments) • notices for parents (you can see the notices sent to students as well) Parents and students are all issued with individual logins which will be emailed to them prior to the start of the school year. UWCSEA app The UWCSEA App is available for iOS and Android devices via the app stores.Search for UWCSEA and download the app to access eBrief, the calendar, notices, student timetable (including their activities for each day) and more. Parents will need login details to access the App, as the information is customised to each user.
3
For students Personal system login and Gmail You will be issued with a personal login to the College website where you can access the Community Portal and the Online Learning Platform (see below). You will also be issued with a College-linked Gmail account, which the College uses to communicate directly with you. You should check your email daily. Online Learning Platform, homework and organisation The College Online Learning Platform (OLP), also known as Teamie, is where your teachers share resources, set homework and send you and your classmates messages specific to the course. It’s also where you can post comments and questions about topics and have course-related conversations with fellow students. From this single platform, you can access all your courses and also a calendar with assignments and deadlines that will help you to organise yourself. At the beginning of the school year, teachers will spend time making sure students are set up and connected to the OLP. Student Digital Portfolio You will also be issued with a College Digital Portfolio, which is used throughout the High School to record, reflect, curate and share your experiences, your perspectives and your learning. Community Portal The Community Portal is dedicated to providing information you need such as upcoming events and resources. You will also access Activities and Service sign-ups via the portal. The Notices section will tell you what is going on in the school – such as sports try-outs, music and drama auditions, and Global Concerns events. There is also an event calendar for your school section. Assembly and mentor group Each grade has a weekly assembly, and any daily announcements are available on the portal and read in mentor time each morning.
For parents Student timetable Parents can check their child’s online timetable to check their weekly schedule. Updating your contact information and indicating a preferred email address If there is any change in contact information (i.e., phone, address or email), it is very important that parents amend the details the school holds on file. An important step to remember is to indicate your preferred email address for receiving school communications. If you do not do this the
College will default to the first email contact on file as your preferred email address. Indicating a preferred email address also allows us to eliminate duplication in communication and ensures we are able to identify each parent uniquely as required by some key systems used at the College. You can indicate your preferred email address by logging in to the portal or via the UWCSEA app. Online College Calendar There is an up-to-date online calendar on the school website. There is also a printable academic year calendar listing term dates and public holidays. The College uses Google Calendar, and, depending on the calendar system you use, you can import all or some of these events from Google Calendar to your own to help you keep on top of what’s happening. If setting this up in advance, please make sure you include the High School, East Campus and UWCSEA/College calendars—you can also include other school sections and the PA calendar. eBrief This weekly newsletter consolidates key information into an easy-to-read format for parents. Considered essential reading, eBrief is sent to all parents every Friday during the school term. It contains information for parents on the upcoming two weeks. You can expect the first eBrief the Friday before school commences—to help you get ready for the start of the year. It is not sent during school holidays.
Parents’ Association (PA) The PA provides opportunities for all parents to contribute to the UWCSEA community. Being involved in PA activities provides parents with an opportunity to be an active participant in their child’s school community, to keep up-to-date with happenings in the school and provides an avenue to meet other parents and members of the school community. New parents are encouraged to contribute as much as their time and interests allow. We are also able to connect you with parents who speak the same language. The PA offers many opportunities for parents to become further involved in the life of the school. These include: • coffee mornings and other networking opportunities to meet other parents • nationality-based social events for parents to network with other parents of the same cultural background • general events such as the Family Festival and welcome events for new parents To find out more about the PA, click here.

Contacting/notifying the school
Uniforms
Absences – students
All High School students wear a short-sleeved polo shirt with a skirt, trousers or shorts. A white t-shirt may be worn under the uniform shirt, provided it is visible only at the neck. Students may wear a sweatshirt in a school colour (blue, green) or black, grey or white, with no visible logos.
Parents need to notify the High School Office if their child is absent or going to be late to school. Contact details can be found at the back of the brochure.
Absences – parents It is a UWCSEA admission requirement that parents of day students are resident in Singapore. If for any reason, for example a family emergency, both parents are out of Singapore, we must have clear details of the adult who will act as a supervisor in their absence so we know whom to contact in case of an emergency. Please complete the Nomination of a Supervisor during Temporary Parental Absence form, which is available on the Community Portal via the Forms button.
Appointments If your child needs to attend an appointment, for example with a doctor or dentist, we ask that you try to make these after school hours. If this is not possible, please inform the High School Office and class teacher of your plans to collect and return your child to and from school.
Grades 9 and 10 wear a dark blue coloured polo shirt with a grey culottes, skirt or shorts. Grades 11 and 12 wear a white coloured polo shirt with smart black trousers, skirts or shorts of their own choosing. Skirts and shorts are required to be at least mid-thigh in length and should be in a fabric appropriate for the climate. Denim is not acceptable. Grade 9 and 10 students will also need the Physical Education uniform, including the hat. For more details on our uniform policy, visit our website.
Footwear Shoes must cover the whole foot but not extend above the ankle and must be discreet in colour (black, grey or white) and have no obvious logos or coloured trim. Socks should be white, grey or black. Non-marking trainers in a colour other than black are required for indoor Physical Education lessons. The College Shop sells a range of black school shoes for all ages.
National Days Students can choose to wear national dress or national colours on the National Day of their country of origin/ passport country.
Focus days Focus days are uniform-free days that focus on a global need, both raising awareness and funds to help those in need.
Where to purchase uniforms In line with COVID-19 precautionary measures, all uniforms are to be ordered online and arranged to be collected. Visit uwcseaeastshop.org to place your order. Students are asked to leave school at the end of the school day unless they are staying back for activities. Once you have been sent your login details, you can access and print your child’s full timetable via the Student Record System, using the Community Portal (see website section above for more details).
Bus The most common is by the school bus, which goes to most places in Singapore. The Transport Office organises the school bus service—contact details are on the last page if you would like to know more. You can book either a one-way or two-way service. Buses arrive in time for the start of school each day and leave at around 3.10pm. Pick-up and drop-off times are advised when you book the bus service, which is door-to-door. If you have an after-school activity that ends at 4.30pm, you can take the activity bus home which leaves at 4.40pm. For activities ending at 6pm there is a limited bus service at 6.10pm. You will have to make your own arrangement to get home if the activity ends after this. Public transport Students in High School are able to use public transport to get to and from school. There are a number of public buses that drop off near the entrances to the school. Car If you come to school via private car in the morning then you should be dropped off at the main lobby drop-off point. If you are also being picked up in the afternoon, you can be collected from one of our pick-up points. Bicycle You are encouraged to cycle to school, and there are secure bicycle racks available under cover. Cyclists must wear a safety helmet and obey all road rules. Parking There is ample parking on the school site. Taxi directions Ensure you ask the driver to take you to UWCSEA East at Tampines. As we have two campuses, it is important that you ask for the correct campus.
6
Lunch and snacks Security pass and security check The security guards check all vehicles and pedestrians entering the campus. Parents must have their grey parent lanyard and ID card to show security upon arrival and must wear them at all times whilst on campus. Please organise a security pass to facilitate a speedy arrival to school if you or a helper will be bringing your child to school or collecting them regularly. Families are asked to upload photos for parents, nominated adults and enrolled children directly to the College database for their UWCSEA profile and ID cards. Refer to this Profile photo upload guide. To upload, log in here using your parent login details.
Visitors to Campus Under the current COVID-19 requirements all visitors to campus must have a valid invitation with a confirmed time and date and must have pre-registered with our visitor booking system – Envoy. The grade secretary or Parents’ Association will share Envoy registration details with you prior to any meeting on campus. Upon arrival on campus visitors must complete all TraceTogether Safe Entry procedures. Parents MUST have their grey parent lanyard and ID card clearly visible at all times whilst on campus.
The canteen and the Santai cafe offer a wide variety of food with influences from all over the world. If you buy your lunch each day, rather than bring it from home, it will cost between $3 and $7 per day. Students can purchase snacks and lunch using the (cashless) campus card system, which can be monitored and topped up online by parents. Students are able to utilise the campus card system once they receive their student ID card in the first few weeks of school. Further information on the campus card system is available on the Community Portal on the College website. They can also utilise other forms of cashless payments such as debit cards to purchase food on campus. For more information, visit the Food Services page on the portal. There are healthy snacks available throughout the day as well as hot lunch, salad and sandwich options. Students should not order food to be delivered to the school between 8am and 4.30pm. Chilled, filtered water is available in water fountains—bring a water bottle from home to refill during the day.
Break times There are breaks scheduled every day for staff and students to allow time for organisation, travel to class and a time for short recreation before re-engaging in classroom learning.

Health and wellbeing of students Temperature Taking before leaving home
Food and other allergies
In order to remain compliant with government requirements, parents must submit their child(ren)’s temperature every morning, before they leave home. You can submit temperature readings via the ‘Temperature-Taking’ icon in the UWCSEA App or via the ‘Temperature Declaration’ icon in the Community Portal (login required for both).
Some children have food allergies, and we monitor this very carefully. If a student with a severe allergy, such as a nut allergy, is identified in a class, we will request that items containing the allergen are not brought into the school by any student in that class. For safety, the parents of students who suffer from such allergies are encouraged, nevertheless, to assume that the classroom is not nut free and to behave in accordance with that assumption.
If your child is unwell, they are to remain at home until they fully recover. More information on health and safety can be found on our Health Advisory Website.
Medical care The centrally located Clinic (Block C, Level 2) is staffed by trained nurses and is fully equipped to handle minor injuries that occur in school. If a child has been taken to the clinic and needs to go home, one of the nurses will contact their parents or the designated supervisor or emergency contacts should the parents not be contactable. If your child has any medical condition that may require medical treatment, emergency care or that our staff should be aware of, please notify us via the online medical questionnaire so we have the information necessary to assist them if needed. Any medication should be given at home or, if it is essential that it is administered during the day, then it will be given by the nurses at the clinic. Students are not permitted to carry medication around the school. If your child shows any signs of illness please do not send them to school, and if they are taken ill at school we will contact you to arrange for them to be picked up. Please refer to the section below on nominating alternative or emergency contacts.
Online medical questionnaire There is a comprehensive online medical questionnaire that we require all parents to complete for each child no later than orientation day. The form covers pre-existing conditions and illnesses, as well as related information for activities such as PE swimming ability and other conditions that may affect their participation. If there are any changes in medical information, please amend the online form. You will be able to complete this questionnaire once you receive your Community Portal login ID in July.
Once we have a better idea of the requirements of each student, via the online medical questionnaires, we are able to assess the level of caution we need to adopt in each class. If your child has a severe allergy, please make sure that this is indicated on the online medical questionnaire and bring it to the class teacher’s attention as soon as possible. We also require details of the management plan to be set out for staff. We can provide contact details for a support group of parents of allergy sufferers.
Wellness Centre Students are able to access High School counsellors in the Wellness Centre. Appointments are made through an online booking system.
Emergency contacts Part of the online medical questionnaire asks parents to nominate two emergency contacts in Singapore. It is important that these are kept up-to-date. These should be people that you trust to make medical decisions for your child should the unfortunate need arise. We therefore request that you do not nominate your domestic helper unless they are in a position to make medical decisions. Please also note that these contacts are not necessarily the same as the nominated guardian which we require if both parents are out of Singapore at the same time. This situation requires separate notification to the school.

Other useful information
A couple of things about classes
Calculators
Languages
The Mathematics Department requires all students to have a TI-Nspire CX II graphic calculator which can be purchased from the college shop at a competitive price. As with all other valuable items, you should put your name on your calculator.
It is compulsory in High School to study a second language— unless you are involved in learning support (Study Skills) or the EAL programme which means that English is your second language and you are doing Additional English instead.
Lost property
You should already know which language you are signed up for—if not, please ask your mentor or Head of Grade.
Please go to Reception to ask about or report lost property or to hand in something you have found. Found valuables are recorded and kept by the receptionists.
Lockers Lockers are available if a student would like one. Locks are available for purchase from the College Shop. It is a good idea to keep your locker secure at all times.
Physical Education Grade 9 and 10 IGCSE students have two 80-minute periods of Physical Education (PE) every week, and Grade 10 FIB students have one 80-minute period of PE every week. Grade 11 and 12 students do not have a compulsory PE lesson, but they are encourage to be involved in some sort of physical activity through our Activities programme. You will need to wear the school’s PE uniform and some type of training or running shoe. We all need to be sun smart and wear a hat and sun block for outdoor lessons. This includes a rash vest during aquatics, over the top of your swimsuit. Don’t forget a water bottle, as it is easy to become dehydrated in the heat and humidity. You are also encouraged to bring a towel on PE days as you have the option to shower and change after lessons.
Laptops All UWCSEA students in Grades 6–12 must have an up-todate Apple MacBook laptop to support their learning and complete the remote laptop orientation process – Ready Learner One @ UWCSEA – for students and families. Families have two options to source a laptop for school: • use an Apple laptop that you already own • purchase a new Apple laptop Ready Learner One @ UWCSEA is a set of learning engagements and families will be supported remotely to complete both levels: • Level 1: System Setup – This level will help set you up to use the school systems; including wifi, printing and our software distribution system (Filewave) • Level 2: Taking Care – This level will help you consider how you will take care of your laptop and yourself. You will also create a shared family media agreement to help develop a positive environment for use of a laptop at home.

Activities programme
Sports
There are four activity seasons over the three school terms each year. In the High School, everyone is encouraged to do at least one activity each season; most students do several varying activities each week.
Representative sports for East Campus include: athletics, badminton, basketball, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics, netball (girls), rugby (boys), sailing, softball, swimming, tennis, touch rugby (girls), and volleyball.
The wide range of activities on offer fall into six categories: Wellness for Life, Mind Matters, Arts and Performance, Dragons Sports, Learn and Lead, and Create and Innovate.
Representative-level sport is organised into seasons, with College teams competing in local school leagues and endof-season tournaments organised by ACSIS (Athletics Conference of Singapore International Schools) and SEASAC (South East Asia Student Activity Conference).
Activities can take place before school, but are usually after school from 3.10–4.30pm, 4.30–6pm, 6–7.30pm. The ‘activity buses’ leave school at 4.40pm to take you home. For activities ending at 6pm, there is a limited bus service departing at 6.10pm that drops off at a few MRT stations. If you have an activity that ends later, there will be no activity bus service. Please check what time and day your activities are scheduled on before you request to sign up so you can make it to all of them. Many activities are included in your school fees, but some require additional payment to cover equipment, coaching or other costs; this will be noted in the sign-up system when you make your preferences each season, and payment generally needs to be made before the activity commences.
Sign-up Signing up for activities is done online during the sign-up period. Sign-up opening and closing dates are advertised through student notices, eBrief and the online calendar and generally take place in the first weeks of school following several guidance sessions with your mentor. To register your preferences, students need to login to the Community Portal using your User ID and password, and then go to the Activities sign-up link. Please note: Sign-up for activities is done online during a designated period, and while parents can browse the available activities here, students must be logged in with their own login details to submit any preferences. Parents are not able to submit activity preferences for their children using their own login details. Some sports, music and drama activities hold trials or auditions to select their team for leagues or upcoming events. Trials are held on separate days, and students are informed about this beforehand via the online notices system on the Community Portal of the website as well as eBrief.
All of these sports teams may have an age group for High School students, although many do enter teams in a range of age divisions. There are recreational opportunities across all sports which are offered in the Programme.
How do I get involved? Information regarding sign-up and tryouts will be publicised in the first weeks of school.
Arts High School students have numerous opportunities to express themselves creatively outside the classroom through a wide variety of artistic activities. From drama and dance productions to music ensembles and more, students have many opportunities to participate in the Arts.
Instrumental Teaching Programme The Music department also offers the Instrumental Teaching Programme (ITP) which provides an opportunity for music tuition at the school, but taught by internal and external music teachers. There is an additional charge for these lessons. They are not considered to be part of the Activities programme and therefore run each term, rather than aligned with the activities seasons. More information is available on the orientation website and will be provided via eBrief at the beginning of the academic year.

Service and Global Concerns
Outdoor Education
What is the Service programme?
The opportunities for learning at UWCSEA extend far beyond the classroom as students take on experiential challenges that build resilience, collaboration and leadership. Our Outdoor Education programme offers an incremental progression of age-appropriate experiences to students across the K–12 curricula.
Our Service programme involves students helping people and/or the environment within the College, the wider Singapore community and globally. It is an expectation that all students participate in service activities, and students are expected to complete at least one service activity each year in College or Local Service.
What is Global Concerns? The motto for Global Concerns (GC) is: ‘Turning Ideas into Action.’ The aims of Global Concerns are to: • promote desirable values and action among students • raise awareness and educate students about broader issues relating to specific projects • encourage pupils to be aware, informed and active • highlight the values of service and environmental awareness • foster amongst the students the sense of belonging to an international educational movement with 17 member Colleges, each with a very definite ethos and mission UWCSEA currently supports numerous projects worldwide and provides material support for a wide variety of endeavours in Southeast Asia and beyond through partnerships with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who work with specific groups in these countries. Students are encouraged to be actively involved in raising funds and awareness for a GC and can opt to be involved in other GCs through leadership meetings and the High School GC Executive.
How to sign up Sign-up for service is done via the online activities signup. There is a separate link to select and sign up for your Global Concern (GC) of choice. You are expected to take your commitment to both your selected social services very seriously, and full attendance is expected. All Grade 9 and 10 students are expected to do a weekly local service (commit 60–90 minutes each week) for two seasons. Grade 11 students are expected to commit to a weekly service for the entire year.
Please note that due to the current COVID-19 travel restrictions, there will be no overseas travel for UWCSEA student groups during the 2021/2022 school year. Enrichment trips outside of Singapore are also unlikely to be available in the 2021/2022 school year. Instead we will be delivering a ‘Local Plus’ model, with on-campus experiences and offcampus trips within Singapore. These experiences will retain the learning for students, while giving them the opportunity to experience Singapore in new ways.
Key events for the start of the school year Orientation All new students and their parents are expected to attend the orientation, where we will cover some key information about the start of the year. Students will meet their mentors, and key management staff will provide an overview of what to expect of the year ahead. Please see the East orientation website for details on the orientation schedule. Students do not need to wear their uniform to school for orientation day unless specified. The College Shop will be selling uniforms on campus on the orientation days. You will also be able to speak with the bus company, ask questions about the online medical forms and organise photos for parent security passes.
Coffee mornings and other parent gatherings Opportunities for parents to meet with other parents at grade-level coffee mornings and other events will be published in eBrief early in the term. The Parents’ Association on the East Campus is very active and also organises a welcome function early in Term 1 (COVID-19 restrictions permitting).
