UWCSEA’s Scholarship Programme Graduating Scholars 2014/2015

“In this world there are three types of people; people that make things happen, people that watch what happens and people who wonder what happened … I expect UWC scholars to be those people that make things happen.” Shelby Davis, Philanthropist

Your gift is

changing lives Thank you for your valuable gift to UWCSEA’s Scholarship Programme. Investing in an education that empowers students is an investment in future leaders. These leaders, through their determination and compassion, will make a positive difference wherever they are in the world. Supporting the UWCSEA Scholarship Programme allows us to offer transformational opportunities for young people who truly value the power of an education. Receiving a scholarship to UWCSEA is a life-changing experience. By educating students from around the world together and by uniting them in a common purpose – to be of service to others—we will fulfill our mission: to make education a force to unite people’s nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Your generosity has helped contribute to the education and development of our scholars. This year we will see 42 scholars graduating in the Class of 2015 – our largest cohort to date. Your gift is changing lives. Scholars bring so much to the College community with their life experiences, focus, achievements and energy.

Living and learning with scholarship students undoubtedly provides a deeper understanding of specific nations, cultures and global issues. For our scholars, a UWCSEA education is an opportunity to take their dynamism and commitment to new levels - personally, locally and globally. It is thanks to your ongoing support and commitment that we have been able to develop our scholarship programme year on year. Next year we are planning to offer additional three and five year scholarships to further diversify our College community. Each scholar has a unique story to tell and although it is not possible to profile all our scholars, there are common themes throughout their experiences. Without exception, they all share a sincere appreciation for their scholarships. The following accounts touch on the triumphs, challenges and personal development experienced by a cross section of our scholar community representing the continents of South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Thank you.

Cristobal Arturo de Jesus Cintolesi Carvallo (Chile) “I came here thinking that I would need to find a tool to make a change in the outside— what I learned was at the end of the journey that everything we need to make a change was always inside of us. That is UWCSEA for me, a path to change a person’s view of life, and to make a change in the world. But I could only do that through changing myself. Now, minutes before the end of my experience here at UWCSEA, I understand something. By looking at the eyes of those I shared love, grief, and adventures throughout and by looking back at the memories I know that it is not over. UWCSEA is not just a place, it is not just a person…..it is a hope and hope is something that has no end. I learned at UWCSEA how to take responsibility and how to turn ideas into reality, especially from the service and global concerns programs. I will expand the cause for education by trying to implement skills that I acquired during my time here in my country. I believe that if students are equipped with skills to reframe their concept of self and to self-motivate, we can expect them to become happy and ethical human beings. I felt your support and what it meant every day, and that memory, that feeling is something that has no end. Desde el fondo de mi alma, muchisimas gracias!” After Graduating from UWCSEA, Cristobal will be taking a Gap Year working as a volunteer in the Bairo Pite Clinic in Timor Leste.

David Chem (Cambodia) “I arrived at UWCSEA three years ago and soon I will be graduating. I was born into a poor and huge family—two parents, four sisters and me. I always told myself that one day I will study abroad and further my education, but to be honest I didn’t know how. Now, the UWCSEA scholarship has not only given me that education, but also a meaningful experience that will stay with me for my whole lifetime. It changed my life and showed me the way to achieve my dreams. I have been accepted with full scholarship to the University of Oklahoma in USA. I am going to study there this August and plan to pursue Chemical Engineering as my Major. Last summer, I volunteered to teach English to young children at an NGO in my country called Sustainable Cambodia. I became a teacher for the first time and when I introduced myself to students, I told them about my experiences here and encouraged them to try to study and apply for this scholarship at UWCSEA.

“the UWCSEA scholarship has not only given me that education, but also a meaningful experience that will stay with me for my whole lifetime.”

UWCSEA is not only a great school with great education, it also has a strong community, which unites people from different parts of the world. I believe very strongly in the positive effects of this and I use many opportunities to share my personal experiences to let people know what impact their gifts have on us. I hope that the words I spread will help promote and attract more donors to support the scholarship program, so that there will be more scholars every year. I would like to say thank you for contributing to this programme.”

Anita Chepchirchir Too (Kenya) “This UWCSEA education has provided me with life skills that have equipped me with confidence and assurance that I am capable of really making a change. It has been a great opportunity for me to enhance my critical thinking abilities and become a well-rounded learner. I have been so fortunate to meet teachers and students from all over

the world and have conversations with friends about world politics. To say it has been invigorating would be a large understatement. It is always an eye opener to realize how like-minded most of the students are and how all our aspirations are driven by the passion to change the world. The Global Concerns and Service programs that I was involved in showed how an interest in a charity can help yield results. I have grown so much as a

Anamaria Golemac (Croatia/ Bosnia and Herzegovina) “Just being in this community, surrounded by people representing different cultures, has made me a richer and happier person. The fact that so many unique viewpoints and opinions are expressed and debated in this community marks it as a truly peaceful and hopeful environment of tomorrow. After graduating from UWCSEA, I have enrolled into Skidmore College, in Saratoga Springs, US. Going to UWCSEA made me aware of how beneficial diversity is and I want to continue pursuing an international education – this is one of the main reasons I am going to Skidmore College. I would like

I will be undertaking a double major in Comparative Literature and Philosophy at Smith College, USA. I would like to get into publishing and editorial capacities. This will allow me to bring African Literature to the forefront of the academic world and have more authors receive credit from the African continent. UWCSEA has been an opportunity. It is an experience that allows me to grow, learn and share. The past two years have taught me so much more about myself than any other time period in my life. I am beyond thankful to all who have supported me in my path towards success, it has not all been easy but it has been worth it.”

to study Europe Model Nations and participate in youth conferences in Belgium and Netherlands. This summer, my sister and I are planning to start an educational camp where we will help teach English, Entrepreneurship and different life skills to orphans in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I am amazed by how much my learning has been improved in the light of my understanding of the world and different issues from different points of views. Your generosity has been truly appreciated and as a donor you are someone I want to be later in life. Thank you for everything! Hvala Vam za sve!”

“Thanks to your support for me and my scholarship, I could learn that there are many people with a good heart outside, wanting to find someone in order to help change the world.”

Dolores Maria Albarral Bravo (Spain) “I am lucky to live within a special community because the UWCSEA community is very concerned in the goal of making a positive impact in the world, such as promoting peace and leadership. After my experience at UWCSEA, I want to continue to make positive changes in the world; I have many plans regarding social and environmental goals and I hope to carry these out not only in my hometown but also all the places I visit.

Once graduating from UWCSEA, I am taking a Gap Year. During this time, I am going to spend three months in the Philippines volunteering as a teacher at the Lihuk Centre. After this, I will be spending four months travelling around the world and studying at the same time on a ship. This program is called Semester At Sea. This will further help me to set my future dreams that I have for myself and for my country. Once my Gap Year is finished I will be doing a combined degree and going to Whitman College for three years studying Biology and then move to

the University of Washington to study Oceanography for a further two years. I have learned that sharing your opinion and your critical thinking are two of the best tools for peace and to make this world a better place to live. Here, at UWCSEA, I was able to recover my true confidence and to begin to follow the ways that lead to my dreams. Thanks to your support for me and my scholarship, I could learn that there are many people with a good heart outside, wanting to find someone in order to help change the world.”

Israel George Mnyitafu (Tanzania)

uses his knowledge to promote mutual peace and co-existence.

“UWCSEA has shaped me as a critical thinker, an engaged member of the community and an enlightened individual with progressive thoughts.

After graduating from UWCSEA, I will be going to Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA. I have dreams of being a Financial Analyst and Economist. I hope to pursue Developmental Economics and I hope that the knowledge I will gain will help me alleviate my country, Tanzania, from the state that it is in to a regional powerhouse and also improve the living standards of citizens in the country.

I got a chance to meet people from various backgrounds with different perspectives and views about the world we live in. I must admit that at first, with my fixed thoughts and perceptions about the world, it was hard for me to accept the changes I was exposed to. However, since coming here, it has helped me grow into the person I am today; an active global citizen, who accepts change, embraces it and then

I also hope to pursue politics as I feel it will give me the platform to implement these changes in Tanzania.

I am truly grateful for all UWCSEA exposed me to and I am proud to say that the liberal and open-minded individual I am today is due to what UWCSEA did for me. I am privileged to call myself a UWCSEA alumni and I am looking forward towards being a proud UWCSEA advocate, ready to make changes in our world and live up to the UWC mission. Thank you so much for changing the life of this young boy from Tanzania. Wishing you nothing but the best and blessings be bestowed on you. Asante sana.”
