EDITOR Hasan
Opening Words HASAN (EDITOR) “What is the boarding house like?” is probably a question every boarder has heard in school. Whether it’s a day student, a teacher or a friend somewhere far away, not many people realize how life actually is for boarders. And in fact, what lies behind the old bricks of Kurt Hahn and Nelson Mandela House, is something one hasn’t been able to effectively describe yet. Is it the familiar smell of burned cookies and homemade cup noodles, while you swiftly parade (at least before the card system was in place) through its halls, that make it so unique? Or is it Sodexo’s deliciously prepared food, that convinces people to turn this place into their homes? Boarding (sometimes referred to as the “BeAtInG hEaRt oF UwC”) is compiled of all those things, yet would be nothing as it is if it wasn’t for the 168 boarders, friends... you could even call them family members. It is them who turn a pile of bricks, into an inspirational, energizing and unique place fizzing with wonderful possibilities and where we create unique memories. This yearbook aims to capture and encompass just that: the energy and uniqueness of UWCSEA’s boarding house. It’s a story of sleepless nights, tears, laughs, compassion, love, dedication and much more. In fact, these pages aim to describe not just an experience, but one’s home and life. I have been extremely grateful to be part of a wonderful and hard-working team that has put hundreds of hours of work into attempting to do just that. After ten years, we have finally been able to bring back something that has become more than just a yearbook. It is something that will soon hopefully have a life of its own and breathe the incredible memories that we have created over the past year. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone in the yearbook team. This would have not been possible without you! And I also want to thank you, “the boarder”, for shaping this experience into what it was. We hope you enjoy it.
SOPHIE (HOUSEPARENT SUPERVISOR) 2019-20 is a school year filled with ownership, investment and ultimately leadership. Nothing epitomises this more than student-led productions. The Boarding Yearbook is a reflection of many hours of hard work and determination, which is fully attributed to our boarders. I’m incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved and look forward to you experiencing what is, hopefully, a revival of a newly transformed tradition. When, back in Term 3 of Grade 11, Teresa asked me why we didn’t have a yearbook, I honestly couldn’t answer. It turned out that this was a thing of the past, but a task that a group of present Senior boarders were keen to revive. Whether it be creating the graphics, meeting deadlines for journalistic pieces, or accumulating hundreds of photographs for print, the task was never beyond them. Whilst at times it seemed like a wishful figment of their imaginations, the team’s talent and dedication have steered them to the end. Thank you for all your hard work and for laying the foundations for those who will continue your work in years to come - what a legacy and achievement! A special thank you to Hasan for all his work to organise and lead the team towards completion of this project: we wouldn’t be reading this now without his investment. Happy reading!

Located in the heart of Indonesia, lies a tiny island that is barely seen on a map. Like nomads, we hustled from port to port, starting from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal before reaching our accommodation for the next three days: Bintan Lagoon Resort. Stepping out of the ferry, our feet were greeted by soft, white, and warm sand. The wind’s breeze brushed against our hair, making us feel like lifeguards from Baywatch. Reaching the lobby, we were greeted by a traditional Indonesian dance: a sign for us to switch on our Holiday mode and finally relax. From golfing and an archery course to lounging by the pool as well as the beach, many opportunities were given to de-stress. Nevertheless, some still chose to stay in the comfort of their rooms and ordered room service with a side of a personal masseuse. Running around, laying under the sun, laughing out loud, it was wonderful to have a break from school! The trip was an incredible experience overall. It was great for morale and boosted our community’s bond. Another bonus was the dope food we ate. Everyone stacked their plates high and clogged their arteries with delicious steak, seafood, as well as veggies. I almost felt like I was cheating on Sodexo. Compliments to the chef <3 By: Tara
Ahh, who wouldn’t enjoy a group of kids dancing to sickomode under the crescent moon? What a sight. All jokes aside, the mandatory fi fin nal dinner was an amazing time. We were greeted by a path surrounded by fairy lights and a beautiful arc straight out of a wedding ceremony. Performances accompanied the night. We will never forget Manny “shooting” while Claire and Neil fl fla awlessly did the “woah”. It still brings shivers down my spine. Who knew there was so much talent in the boarding house? Chinese tunes were sung and Kpop dances were done, it was truly a magical night fi fillled with applause and laughter. Once the show was over, we headed out to the beach where a humongous bonfi firre was lit. The scent of fumes still irritates my nose to this day. What would the Boarding Environmental Council say about that? #pollution #globalwarming #whatwouldGretado. The night fifin nally ended with an incredibly mediocre moshpit. With the adults observing from a distance, it was time for the kids to have fun. Music blasted through the entire Indonesian archipelago and everyone danced their hearts out. Some had a blast, sweating their t-shirts off while others called it “lame” and left to sit by the beach. Nevertheless, the night ended with a magically starry night. By: Tara

The Names Committee aims to promote the UWC mission and values, building a stronger community within boarding. With activities such as Cozy Talks, Human Library and Cooking, they aim to bring together boarders and create a safe place to share feelings and thoughts. The moment you walk into one of their activities, you are engulfed by the relaxing and rhythmic atmosphere of fairy lights, slow background music and the smell of mouth-watering treats such as hot chocolate. The environment created in their activities screams acceptance and hugs of welcome. With such a diverse environment at our Boarding House, their activities are a huge contribution to our community. By: Aneesa
Ukulele/Guitar As you move through the halls of Kurt Hahn House on a Monday evening, you can hear the sweet refrain of ukuleles from far away. The strumming sound, guided by a deep and warm voice that would sing completely off-key, were those of boarders learning how to play the ukulele, that lost themselves in the melodies of their songs. Luckily, they took their talent to far beyond the Kurt Hahn Common Room. From annoying their roommates till 2am with the same four chords of “Riptide to a wonderful performance at an International vening, you have most definitely heard them play. heir music fills the air without effort and rushes in every person, giving them the opportunity to relax... What else could you want on a hectic Monday evening? By: Agustin
The calming meditation and the mellow voices put you to sleep - a great way to make up for all the late nights over the week. that it’s actually quite challenging - in the best possible way! The highlight will always be the time we get to meditate and just lie on the soft (and smelly) mats.
It is a time where we can really connect with ourselves... until we are woken up by the loud sounds of snoring of that one person that decided to take the task too literally and completely disconnect… Whether you joined to connect with yourself, disconnect or skip prep on a Sunday evening, with moves such as the baby cobra and child pose, you can comfortably say you are finally prepared or li e By: Anahitha
Start to Swim Start 2 Swim is a weekly Sunday boarding activity running where boarders are able to learn how to swim. This is an activity for boarders who want to feel more comfortable, confident, and safe in the water or for those who want to help out and teach other boarders how to swim. The fellow boarders are able to learn new and valuable life skills together while still having fun and eventful time! Throughout the year, the coaches are able to see how the boarders progress from being scared to be in the water to now being able to dive in and swim around freely.
Although this activity was run on a Sunday morning, where students would dread to wake up and come to the pool, the time would always fly because everyone was having a blast. The sense of achievement and the friendships that have been made throughout the course of this activity is what made people come back every weekend. By: Aerin
Boarding Council
The council is elected by fellow boarders as a democratic process of representation and consists of 3 representatives from each house. The purpose is to give everyone a platform to share their opinions and voice. The boarding council has three main objectives: • Ensure involvement and representation of boarders in essential decision-making processes in the boardinghouse; • Support the boarding staff in ensuring that the boarding house is a safe and comfortable home for everyone; • Clearly communicate views, ideas and concerns of boarders to houseparents and day school. The council meets weekly to discuss issues raised by boarders and to plan and organise activities to enrich our community. Committees within or linked to the council • • • • •
