Dover Campus English as an Additional Language (EAL)

While our language of instruction is English we have some English Language Learners (ELL) enrolled from K1 to Grade 12. English as an additional language support is available in K1 to 12 to ensure all students acquire the English skills they need to thrive in the curriculum. This includes in class EAL support for ELLs from K1 to Grade 12, and formal EAL classes from Grade 1 to 12 for those who require more intensive support.

Details of how EAL instruction is offered on Dover Campus are outlined below, including whether ELL students in specific grades also take a Language other than English (LOTE) course.

Primary School

Kindergarten 1 and 2

English Language learners (ELLs) participate in the classroom timetable with their peers. At this stage, all learners are gaining literacy skills in a broader sense and therefore the skills being learned through exposure in the classroom to the Literacy curriculum for English serve as a foundation for ELLs as well. All students join Chinese classes and have access to other first, home or heritage languages through the Home Language Programme (HLP).

Grades 1 to 5

All students are supported in class to develop their academic language skills. Our EAL team co-plan with teaching teams to provide this universal support.

For students who benefit from intensified support to develop academic language proficiency an English as an Additional Language (EAL) course with small group sizes is offered. The timing of intensified support varies depending on the profile of the student and their grade level. In Grades 1–4 it is usually during Literacy or Unit of Study. In Grades 4–5 it is during LOTE.

Students in Grades 1–3 select a LOTE course from the available options. Students who cannot take their first, home or heritage language in the school day are encouraged to take it through the HLP.

Middle School

All students are supported in developing academic language skills as part of our learning programme.

Students who require additional support take English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes instead of English in Grades 7–8, and for Grade 6 during LOTE. Language support for academic literacy includes academic vocabulary, structuring academic writing, and comprehension strategies.

For students in Grades 7–8 who require more intensified support we also offer an EAL course during LOTE.

Students are encouraged to take their first language if it is available within the school day. Alternatively they may select a foreign language course from the available options. Students who cannot take their first, home or heritage language in the school day are encouraged to take it through the HLP.

High School

All students are supported in developing academic language skills as part of our learning programme. Our EAL team coplan with teaching teams to provide this universal support.

Within the Grade 9/10 Programme

Students who require additional support can access a scaffolded version of the UWC English course. Running both English classes concurrently allows students to transition between them as needed.

Students select an additional language. They are encouraged to take their first language, and/or they may select a foreign language course from the available options.

Grades 11 and 12 (IB Diploma)

We offer both English A (first language) and English B (foreign language).

Students select an additional language. They are encouraged to take their first language (Language A), and/or they may select a foreign language course (Language B) from the available options. If they choose to take Systems Transformation for SL they can opt to take either language A or language B.

For students who require additional or intensified support we offer short term language instruction.

Additional first, home or heritage languages are offered through the Home Language Programme (HLP).
