We all know you work towards a qualification when you come to university, but there’s so much more you can do while you’re here. Even UWE’s Vice Chancellor Steve West will tell you there’s more to life than academia. University is a time to find new interests, develop existing ones and most of all discover who you are and who you want to be. UWE is a thriving community made up of a whole range of different people and the Students’ Union strives to bring them all together, in a harmonious kind of way! There is no doubt that UWESU will be at the heart of your social, cultural and political experience while you’re at UWE. This guide will explain what UWESU is all about, the bits that are vital to you and more importantly what you can expect during your Freshers’ Week. Freshers’ Week fills the start of your university experience with a chance to get involved with what UWESU has to offer. We want you to have the best possible start to your time at UWE, so we hold the largest Freshers’ Fair in the country and host many exciting club nights and parties during the week. Sports & Societies
A UWESU card and online registration are required for your membership of Sports and Societies at UWESU. You can join Sports and Societies online and pay your membership fees, then details of your membership can be added to the back of your card by your Students’ Union office. So what is Freshers’ Week?

“Well, it’s a mix of all things exciting. It’s the time your Students’ Union spends letting you know what’s out there. Freshers’ Week is actually a tad longer than just the standard seven days and it has some amazing entertainment, activities and opportunities. Not only will we be showing you how to have a good time (like you don’t know!) but also keeping you up to speed with what we can offer you throughout the year.
This elite crowd of over 20 budding students are trained in the areas which relate to you having a good time. If you’re not enjoying yourself, then it’s their job to make sure you are. So if you’re not smiling then you will probably be accosted by one! And if you have any questions about events or entertainment in particular (e.g. who’s playing on what night) they’ll be wandering around over Welcome Weekend to help. Don’t be scared, they might be loud but they won’t bite!
Freshers’ Week and university life in general is what you make of it, and we think we’ve got it down to a fine art. Push your boundaries and enjoy yourself, without becoming the laughing stock of your campus! Our job is to enhance your experience whilst studying at UWE, and what better time to start than the beginning? Watch out for ‘FOMO’... it’s the Fear Of Missing Out warning, and we know you wouldn’t want that to happen. If you need help, ask an Angel. Student Ambassadors are operated by the university, and like the Angels will also be there to offer a helping hand showing you around.

Freshers’ Fairs
Frenchay Freshers’ Fair is the biggest and best in the country. In fact, it’s got so big that we spread it over two days. Thursday will give you the chance to pick up freebies as commercial stalls bid for your attention, while Friday gives you the chance to see what UWESU has to offer. With our sports and societies ready to give you information and sign you up, you’ll also see sports demos, live music sets and be able to find out about other opportunities such as RAG and student media. With over 10,000 people expected each day you’ll find something that’s right for you. Free shuttle bus from campuses; see your campus SU office for times.

SU DEMOCRACY A core principle of UWESU is that it is run by students for students. This is not only achieved by the election of four students as Presidents of UWESU, but by various other means that put UWE students and their views at the heart of the Union. UWESU hold regular Council Meetings; these Councils are Sports, Activities and Student Representatives. To get involved contact any of the elected Presidents or just pop into your SU campus Office.
Elections
There are many opportunities for you to get involved and influence the direction of your Union. You could stand for election and become a President. The main elections take place in March when you will have the joy of seeing hundreds of campaign posters plastered to every pin board, bus stop and window! You have the opportunity to choose to vote for part time and full time postions. Look out for further information in February. Don’t forget to vote in Local and National elections too! The choices that the Government and MP’s make affect what happens about tuition fees, student grants, interest on student loans, and loads of other things that affect YOU as a student.
Annual General Meeting
On November 26th the Union’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held. This is the highest-level policy and decision making forum, where all students can come and vote on what the Union does and what it stands for.
STUDENT REPS WHAT?
Student Reps are your link to feeding back on your Student Experience to the University. Every course at every level should have at least one Student Rep. If you have an issue specifically about your course or the University in general you can take it to your Student Rep and they will be able to help. They are also the ones the University asks when they want student opinion so it’s important to tell them what you think. If you don’t know who your rep is, contact us at the email address below.
WHO?
Any student can put themselves forward to be a Student Rep; here are some reasons why you should: ·Enhance your CV ·Receive a Student Rep Certificate ·Attend the Annual Student Rep Awards ·Meet lots of different people and make new friends. ·You only have to attend 2 to 3 meetings a term as a minimum commitment so it’s easy to combine them with your studies and other commitments. ·Sit on top University meetings ·Be a member of Students’ Union meetings, giving you a direct say on how the Union is run ·Organise events, write articles for Western Eye or help with the Student Rep hour on Hub radio ·Work on national student campaigns ·Attendance allowance of £6.36 per hour for time spent in meetings ·Speak out, make changes and leave your mark!

Reps for each course and level will be elected in your faculty in the first few weeks of term. If you don’t know who is arranging this, ask a module or programme leader, or contact us at the email address below. Once you have become a rep you will receive training and support from the Students’ Union and will be able to get involved with lots of different aspects of the Union. So get in touch!

UWESU offers a diverse range of sports, which we would urge you to get involved with. If you can’t find what you’re looking for then we will support you in establishing the club. Every single sports club is run for students by students. All our students are democratically elected to be on a committee – one day it could be you! Each club has a stall at the Freshers’ Fair, so you can find out all about them there. Make the most of UWESU and your time at University by enjoying what’s on offer! British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) is the governing body of University and College sport and you have the potential to represent the University in national competition. This year there will be 40 teams from Badminton to Water Polo, participating in league and knockout competition. Weekend tournaments provide opportunities for other sports from Athletics to Windsurf.

UWESU Societies
UWESU offers a diverse range of societies providing something for everyone including many cultural, activity, interest, religious, political and performance societies. All societies will be at Friday’s Freshers’ Fair at Frenchay, so come and see what they can get up to. If none of the societies on offer take your fancy it is very easy to set up your own. Raise and Give (RAG)
Raise and Give is your one-stop shop for fun, frolics and fundraising, all in the name of charity. Re-invigorated last year, UWESU’s RAG committee host the best bar crawls the University has to offer and in February we hold our awe-inspiring RAG Week with events to include Cabaret, Speed Dating, Comedy Nights and the Bristol Mega Raid where we join with RAGs from across the country to descend on Bristol to raise money for local charities. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved throughout the year so if you think you’d like to get involved in something fun for a good cause look no further than RAG. If you’d rather leave the organisation to someone else, then just have a great time knowing that you’re helping local and national charities.
Volunteering
Volunteering has grown massively in the last year. If you want to get involved in an activity that can benefit the local community as much as your CV then getting involved in student-led projects is for you. Projects last year ranged from Drama Workshops, Photography Tutorials, conservation and Kids’ Sports Days. If you’re interested in getting involved contact Helen Seacombe who has a wealth of experience and will help you find a project that is right for you.

4F Frenchay The UWESU PrintShop is the epicentre of information about the services that UWESU provides. As well as meeting all of your printing and copying needs, additional services are available, from binding, laminating and faxing, to entertainment ticket sales, and the provision of bus information. It is also at the PrintShop that you can buy student rate bus tickets, parking tokens and collect a UWESU membership card if you need a replacement one.

The JobShop is based at Frenchay but can be accessed from the campus offices, it advertises jobs on campus and around the Bristol area about 6000 a year in total. There’s jobs on campus such as shop and bar staff, whilst those jobs outside the University span a vast range of different opportunities such as office work, care work, retail, manual, call centres and lots more. If you register with the JobShop you will receive a free weekly email of all the current opportunities, so you will have a head start in looking for a suitable job. The Students’ Union runs a 40 place nursery on Frenchay Campus. Children can attend the nursery on a full or part time basis. The nursery offers priority to students and staff of UWE. Money. Managing your money at University can be difficult. Living and studying can be a very expensive experience. Be prepared to have a blow out during Freshers! If possible try and save some money during the summer, as you may be spending quite a bit during the first few weeks with the possibility of moving into new accommodation, buying books, partying etc. Choosing the right studentfriendly bank account is a big decision, so shop around for the best deals and free goodies. Perhaps the best advice is to have a think about budgeting and working out what your expenses will be.

CAMPUSES Frenchay Frenchay Campus is the place where most students are based and thus where most of the activity happens. So during Freshers’ Week this is where all the major events take place; from the big Welcome Party, to the celebrated Freshers’ Fair. Frenchay is home to most of UWESU’s services and in the UWESU building (F Block) you can find the Presidents, the Advice Centre, the JobShop, the Media Centre (home to the student newspaper, Western Eye, and the Hub radio station) and the Sports and Activities Centre (which caters for all sports and societies). If you feel like a drink or something to eat then UWESU offers two bars, Escape Bar and Red Bar, and if you need to grab a snack or pick up a newspaper then there is the Union shop. If entertainment or relaxation is needed the UWESU bars are open in the evening so join in the quiz nights, watch live football, play pool, see live bands or party the night away at the weekly events. The University has its bars, coffee shops, a refectory, 24 hour library, reception and IT labs.
www.uwesu.org/frenchay St Matt’s Small and perfect, St Matt’s is a beautiful old campus with a traditional English sunken lawn surrounded by fantastic 19th Century buildings. Close to the city, Frenchay and Glenside, St Matt’s is a hub of activity with a bar, shop, UWESU office and a number of St Matt’s based sports clubs and societies. Small enough for people to get to know each other, St Matt’s supports a lively social scene. The bar hosts regular events including live music, quiz and open mic nights and has the reputation of being the most fun UWESU bar across the campuses! If you just want to chill between lectures, check out our plush sofas, big screen, baked potatoes, toasties, and the best coffee anywhere in UWE. Come and find the UWESU office and get involved in the Campus Committee or become a Student Rep. We also offer an independent advice service, so whatever your question or problem, if we don’t know the answer we can find someone who does. Our shop sells fresh sandwiches daily. Whether you study at St Matt’s or not we look forward to seeing you in September.
www.uwesu.org/stmatts Hartpury Hartpury is set in acres of greenery and woodland a few miles from both Cheltenham and Gloucester. Hartpury provides courses in Equine-related subjects and Sport as well as housing part of the School of Health and Social Care. It has great facilities including a Sports Academy, extensive Equine facilities and is a training ground for both Cheltenham Town Football Club and Gloucester Rugby Club. We also have ‘Legends’ Bar and a campus shop run by the college for you, where you can buy snacks, drinks or stationery. The UWESU Office is in the Old Sports Hall building above the Legends Bar; so just pop in for advice of any sort, leaflets, hooded sweatshirts, UWESU/NUS cards or maybe just someone to chat to - we are here to help you get the most of your time here at Hartpury. Glenside All UWESU activities at this campus are held in the Glenside Student Centre. You will find the UWESU bar the friendliest bar around, where all the action takes place. This is a student run bar with regular evening events ranging from quizzes, pub-crawls, comedy nights, Glenside’s Got Talent, live bands and everything in between. Gside has Wi-fi access, 4 PC’s for student use only, pool tables, plasma screens and a great beer garden. The bar is renowned for its great food so come and try one of our specials for breakfast or lunch and if you need a pick me up we have our own Glenside Special Hot Chocolate; the bar also offers cashback. We have a shop in the Centre to purchase that sweet fix you need or stationery items, pen holders for uniforms and UWE clothes. The UWESU Campus Office is located here for your personal, academic and welfare needs. Whether you have a question about accommodation, uniforms or the nearest bus route to placement, the staff there are always happy to help out in any way they can. Glenside Students’ Union is well known for its sense of community and friendship, with an active student Campus committee, aka Glenside Angels, who play a vital part in putting on a great Welcome Weekend and Freshers’. There are plenty of ways to become involved and get more out of your time at UWE than just a degree; everyone is welcome so come on in and join the fun! Being a large Campus with students wanting to become health care professionals our students tend to work hard, but play even harder.

Bower Ashton is the smallest of UWE’s campuses, so if it’s an intimate friendly atmosphere you’re after, you won’t find it better anywhere else. It is where the School of Creative Arts is based, and is an eclectic and colourful community of more than 1,600 students and a close network of staff. It is situated on the edge of the beautiful parkland of the Ashton Court Estate and is close to Bristol’s city centre. UWESU at Bower Ashton provides a café bar, a well stocked shop where you’ll find everything you could need on campus (and if not we’ll do our best to get hold of it for you), as well as access to all other UWESU services through the SU office. We offer an independent advice service, a JobShop so you can find work relevant to your skills and location, access to all sports clubs and societies, and a diverse range of entertainment, so opportunities to get involved are broad. Come and chill out in FoCA bAR and sample our freshly ground coffee or something off the student inspired menu. Homemade soups, quiches and cakes, fairtrade produce and vegetarian/vegan options not forgetting BBQ’s in the summer. FoCA bAR holds regular DJ and live music sessions, including Turn Table Tuesdays when you are invited to bring in your own vinyl and use the decks. There is also a permanent exhibition space for students to show their work in the bar, please ask. Why not join the Campus Committee and organise events or share ideas to improve student life.
