“
The MSIS curriculum has a perfect balance between technical and business subjects and offers broad coverage of the top technical challenges and opportunities facing many industries. At the same time, our curriculum is deep: for example, companies facing great challenges in cybersecurity have to look beyond just hardware to find solutions using machine learning and security analytics, and have to deal with security in the cloud. MSIS students gain advanced skills in these areas, as well as a much deeper knowledge of overall technical trends. You can develop IT-related business and leadership skills to open doors in a variety of technical and managerial careers, enabling you to become a leader in using technology to transform business.”
MSIS CLASS OF 2019 ALUMNI
AFIYA NUSRAT PRODUCT MANAGER, AXON I joined the MSIS program with the intention of pivoting my career from software engineering to product management. The wide variety of courses spanning across business and technology helped provide the perfect boost to my profile. We were also given plenty of opportunities to interact with business leaders through workshops and site visits which were extremely useful in bridging the gap between academia and industry. The MSIS program gave me the opportunity to engage with an amazing cohort of individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultivating a positive environment of discussion and debate within our classes. This not only helped widen my perspective but also gave me exposure to new ideas.

CLASS OF 2019 ALUMNI: JAMES LEWIS SENIOR TECHNICAL PROGRAM MANAGER, WALT DISNEY COMPANY I pursued MSIS to obtain a broad-based view of both business and technology to help me in my pursuit of technology leadership roles, and chose the UW specifically because I was confident in the quality of the program. Having graduated, I can also say that I consistently use the technical and business skills that I’ve gained from the program in my career, and that having the degree makes me a competitive candidate in all roles I apply for or am recruited for. For me, it was difficult to turn down a 1-year program that enabled me to work while studying and providing a very high ROI.

The MSIS program has helped me build out my technical, strategic, and presentation skills to make me a more well-rounded tech leader. One of the things that drew me to this program was the focus on a broad range of technical concepts like cloud architecture, IT security, big data processing, and machine learning. This technical depth has given me a greater perspective on strategic priorities in my role.”
This empowers us in two ways; it attracts a diverse set of students, who are working professionals which adds to the knowledge bucket of the class, and second, as students we bring in a huge set of tools and technologies to be a well-rounded professional, paving the way to be a technology leader.”

MSIS PROFESSIONAL MOCK INTERVIEWS Each year, more than 50 mid to senior level local IT leaders gather at the University of Washington Foster School of Business for the annual MSIS Mock Interviews. One of the most anticipated events of the year, the mock interviews are an opportunity for current MSIS students to connect with industry professionals and receive valuable feedback on the interview process.
RAVEN JIANG, CLASS OF 2020 “The mock interview event brought the students and industry leaders to the same table to discuss interview essentials and career growth. It was very insightful to hear feedback from the industry leaders, who usually sit on the other side of the interview table. From their feedback, I learned how to adopt a growth mindset of structuring my storytelling and cultivating future experiences.”
WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SAYING: Danny Chan, MSIS Class of 2020
“One of the aspects I enjoy the most in the MSIS program is connecting with professionals and building my network. Through the networking lunch I was able to connect with a professional from the company I want to work for with the exact position I want to apply for!”
Natasha Karmali, MSIS Class of 2020
“The session provided something students rarely get in the real world of recruiting: constructive and personalized feedback to build up our interviewing skills. My interviewers not only provided ways for me to calm my nerves but also shared a perspective that interviews are truly a two-way street. With this new perspective, I feel more confident about re-entering the recruiting world.”
Blake Dailey, MSIS Class of 2020
“During the interview you do not just want to talk about why you believe you are a perfect fit for the role, but why you believe the work is important and why you should be the one who is doing it. By demonstrating genuine interest and curiosity for the role you are pursuing, you are forging a deeper connection with the interviewer in which you become more memorable.”
MICHAEL ALDRIDGE MSIS CLASS OF 2020 PROGRAM MANAGER MICROSOFT “I had the opportunity to interview with Dina Nichols, Director of Security Operations Detection and Response at Salesforce, and Jill Chin, General Manager of ITS Portfolio Services at Alaska Airlines two professionals who work at the director/ manager level for different technology companies - each running comprehensive teams and IT services. The mock interview provided a space to critically assess my experiences as a product manager and identify tangible steps to improve moving forward, including how to focus on impact: how you can drive core business or service adoption and contribute to the success of others.”

ZEBA AZFAR MSIS CLASS OF 2020 DATA ANALYST, MICROSOFT “Keela spoke about how critical a process is for disruptive innovation, and how analysis and process complement each other in making decisions. There were a few takeaways for me: no decision is also a decision, I should use multiple viable options to reduce confirmation bias, I must anticipate objections, get people to disagree, and get everyone committed on a decision despite agreements.” PATRICK GUTIÉRREZ MSIS CLASS OF 2019 SENIOR PROGRAM MANAGER, AMAZON “Sandy Carter was a captivating storyteller and diagrammed innovation as empathy. Innovative product managers have the empathy to see their product through their customer’s eyes and feel it in their hearts. Empathy is not a feature you can outsource.”
