DEAR FRIENDS, You often hear the comment “what a difference a year makes” but as we reflect over the past year at United Way of Hall County, we clearly see the real difference that you helped make in our community. During the year, we challenged you to “Live It.” By that we mean to step beyond simply wearing the shirt and allow the mantra to become a part of the fabric of who you are every day. When you “Live It”, you bring to life the mission of United Way to “unite people, organizations and resources to improve lives in Hall County.” These 11 words convey a powerful message with even more powerful results. By giving, advocating and volunteering, you help children & youth reach their full potential, promote self-sufficiency, provide support in crisis situations, and encourage a healthier community. On the following pages, you will see demonstrations of how our community “Lived It” during the past year. Brian Daniel provided great leadership to his annual campaign cabinet and the staff resulting in raising $1,808,110.19. While measured by dollars and cents, you can’t place solely a monetary value on the impact of his efforts. And nothing would be possible without the many donors who contribute to United Way. Leading the way is the Tocqueville Society that is comprised of local business and civic leaders who generously contribute $10,000 or more per year to improve lives in Hall County. The Tocqueville Society is a vital part of our campaign but so are the donors who give each week or month from their paycheck. We are humbled by the generosity of our community. In addition to the financial support of our sixteen partner agencies, United Way participated in numerous projects and collaborations throughout the year including the Unmet Needs Response Fund, School Tools for Cool Kids school supply drive, “Rethink You Drink” promotion and others. Another integral part of our organization is the Young Leaders Society. The Young Leaders Society (YLS) not only led the charge for the annual school supply drive but also hosted a Board 101 Series to help educate and prepare members of the community to serve on local non-profit boards. In addition, they volunteered for Fieldale Dock Sales, The No Excuse for Child Abuse 5k and spent a Saturday organizing the Good News at Noon food pantry. YLS spent a day at the tracks with Road Atlanta and Skip Barber racing and was honored to be hosted by Governor and Mrs. Deal for a tour and luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion. YLS enjoyed Conversations with Leaders and Luncheon with Leaders events throughout the year as well. We are very thankful to our sixteen partner agencies that provide critical health and human services to the residents of Hall County every day. Those organizations and their volunteers continue to serve the community in so many ways. Thank you for improving lives in Hall County.
In addition, we want to thank our corporate and in-kind sponsors for their generous support. It’s those dollars that make projects like our “Live It” kits possible as well as underwriting the cost of all our events and advertising. This allows more donor dollars to be invested in the community where they are needed most. United Way is able to accomplish so much only because of the many dedicated and committed volunteers who contribute their time and talent to the organization. Last year, individuals gave countless hours serving on the board, a committee, raising and distributing the financial resources or helping us get our message out. DEDICATION In 2011, United Way of Hall County and our community lost two very influential leaders, John Jacobs, Jr. and Paul Seals. Both of these individuals had leading roles in the early years of our organization and served as Chair of the Board of Directors in 1954 and 1973 respectively. We dedicate this Annual Report to their memory.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
SCHOOL TOOLS FOR COOL KIDS We had another successful year of the School Tools for Cool Kids school supply drive. In July the United Way Young Leaders Society and Publix Super Markets collaborated to donate over 80 boxes of supplies with an estimated value of $15,000 to both Gainesville City and Hall County schools helping students start school prepared, confident and ready to learn.
“HEALTHY HABITS”: A CHILD AND FAMILY WELLNESS EXPO United Way of Hall County teamed up with the Junior League of GainesvilleHall County, Boys and Girls Clubs of Hall County and Interactive Neighborhood for Kids (INK) to host the “Healthy Habits” expo. This event helped families gain perspective on how to incorporate physical activity and healthy nutritional habits into everyday routines and the importance of preventive healthcare.
UNMET NEEDS RESPONSE FUND This year, many of Hall County’s non-profit agencies saw increased demand for their services. In response to this, United Way partnered with the North Georgia Community Foundation to establish the Unmet Needs Response Fund to focus on helping individuals and families with basic needs of food, shelter and clothing. This resulted in awarding $52,325.00 in grants to 21 local organizations making an immediate impact.
RETHINK YOUR DRINK
COMMUNITY IMPACT
United Way also collaborated with the Hall County Family Connection Network, Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Good News Clinics, the North Georgia Community Foundation and Interactive Neighborhood for Kids to promote healthy lifestyles for our children and youth through the “Rethink Your Drink” initiative. Through this collaboration the message of healthy lifestyles and healthy choices has spread throughout the community. As you may know, INK has a Bodies Under Development exihibit, and United Way’s J. Cleon Nalley Educational Enhancement Fund purchased a mobile version of this exhibit, Buddy Jr., to take the message of good nutrition to more children and parents at health fairs, schools and community events.
“LIVE IT” KITS At our Campaign Kick-off event in September, we assembled 500 “Live It” kits. We asked Hall County to “Live It” by distributing these kits full of essential items to those who needed it most. It wasn’t long before we began hearing how the kits were being distributed and the impact they made. Who knows the ultimate impact of those kits; something so small that could mean so much to someone. Many people often feel that they are up against impossible odds, but you never know when your actions might make the difference in their lives. Individually and collectively, this community truly embraced our call to give, advocate and volunteer – to “LIVE IT”!

A WORD FROM OUR 2011 CAMPAIGN CHAIR, BRIAN DANIEL: I am honored to have had the opportunity to lead this community as chairman of the 2011 Annual United Way Campaign. I began this year by asking you to GIVE no matter the amount, to ADVOCATE to anyone who will listen and to VOLUNTEER your spare time. I asked you to join me and not just wear the shirt but “LIVE IT”! You exceeded my expectations. I’ve learned so much over this past year, and am humbled by the generosity and talents of everyone that helped along the way. The volunteers that make up the Campaign Cabinet provided the horsepower to help us achieve our goal. It’s been my honor to work with such a talented group of leaders that exemplify commitment to our community.

Philip Wilheit, Jr., our chair elect, got us started on the right foot with a great Cornerstone Campaign raising $430,000 before we even had our Kick-Off event.
Thank you to the United Way marketing committee led by Davis White. One initiative that our staff and marketing committee launched this year was our $30K in 30 Days e-mail campaign. Thank you for supporting this initiative and for our 16 partner agencies lending their voice to allow us to make and exceed that goal by raising over $45,000 in 30 Days. And finally, thanks to all of you for giving, advocating and volunteering over the past year. Your support has been felt throughout the campaign, and your effort will be felt throughout the community. From our student donors who gave through their school campaigns to our Tocqueville donors who each generously gave $10,000 or more this year, I realize now that it takes this range of effort and every single donation, large or small, to reach our goal. Every campaign is important to us. This year 180 companies and countless individuals came together to help us surpass our $1,800,000 goal and raise $1,808,110.19. The United Way Tocqueville Society was formed to deepen individual understanding of, commitment to and support of United Way’s work of advancing the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. The Tocqueville Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders and volunteer champions who have devoted time, talent and funds to create long-lasting changes by tackling our communities’ most serious issues. United Way of Hall County’s Tocqueville Society recognizes those individuals or families who contribute annual gifts of $10,000 and above. Their generosity is the foundation for our ability to improve lives in Hall County.
The Young Leaders Society was created to encourage the next generation of leadership. Members of the Young Leaders Society are community-oriented individuals or couples in their 20’s and 30’s giving at a $500 level or highter annually to United Way of Hall County. Members participate in a variety of volunteer and community events.
