Fall 2015 Application You and your students will notice several changes to the UW System application for admission. Most notably, the application was available on Aug. 1 for students applying to campuses for fall 2015. As of Aug. 1, students were able to begin work on their applications and even complete them, but the online application will prevent students from submitting until Sept. 1. Beginning Sept. 1, all UW campuses will accept applications for the fall 2015 term. Another change to the application includes an additional option with the Social Security Number (SSN) question. Students have always been encouraged to provide their SSN, but with the new application available Aug. 1, they will be urged to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) if they do not have a SSN.
uwhelp.wisconsin.edu
UW campuses recommend that all students provide their SSN or TIN when they submit their application for admission. As the application indicates, failure to submit a SSN or TIN could have the following consequences:
• A delay in the awarding of financial aid;
• An inability to claim tax benefits on the student’s and/or the parents’ tax returns for the tuition and fees they pay to attend college; and • If the student is a U.S. citizen or resident alien for U.S. tax purposes, the IRS may require him/her to pay a $50 penalty.

Major Changes These are the recent changes to majors. All changes are effective immediately unless otherwise noted.
New Majors UW-Green Bay and UW-Oshkosh have collaborated to offer three new degrees: Electrical Engineering Technology, Environmental Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology. These majors were added very recently; as a result, they are indicated in the Introduction to the UW System only as “Engineering Technology” for this year. UW-Parkside has started majors in Elementary Education (also known as Early-Mid Childhood Education), and in Marketing. UW-Madison is adding a major in Physical Education in spring 2015.

Renamed Majors
UW HELP Videos
UW-Madison has renamed two majors:
Would you like videos to show students why they should take tough classes in high school, or how they can prepare for college? Maybe you’d like an easy way to teach your students about financial aid, or filling out the application for admission. Find all of this information at UW HELP’s YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/uwHelp. Subscribe and keep an eye out for new videos in the future.
Interior Design is now known as Interior Architecture. Textiles and Apparel Design is now called Textiles and Fashion Design. UW-Platteville has renamed two majors: Ornamental Horticulture is renamed as Environmental Horticulture. Communication Technologies is now called Media Studies.
Journey to College
Suspended Major
This video is for parents and students in grades 6 - 9 and explains how to be prepared for college.
UW-Madison has suspended admissions for their Languages and Cultures of Asia major. Please add this change to your desk copy of the Introduction to the UW System.
Journey through Financial Aid This video is an introduction to understanding and obtaining financial aid, for prospective students.
Taking Tough Classes In this video three admission directors from University of Wisconsin System campuses talk about why it’s important for high school students to take tough classes.

Fall 2014 Edition
Universal Transfer Agreement On June 6, 2014 UW System President Ray Cross and Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) President Morna Foy signed the Universal Transfer Agreement. The agreement identifies general education courses that students either at the UW System or at WTCS can transfer to the receiving institution. This work builds on a history of collaboration that has resulted in numerous transfer opportunities within and between the two systems’ institutions, which are still in effect. Individuals considering a transfer continue to be encouraged to work closely with an academic advisor to ensure that the most efficient transfer of credits occurs, especially regarding degree requirements.
Course Options and Dual Enrollment Course Options, enacted as part of the 2013-2015 biennial budget, replaces parttime enrollment while still providing a means for Wisconsin high school students to take courses offered by other Wisconsin school districts. Course Options now also includes the opportunity for high school students to enroll in courses offered by charter schools, various institutions of higher education, and approved nonprofit organizations at no cost to the student. UW System President Ray Cross announced a one-year plan to cover tuition costs for all public Wisconsin high school students taking UW courses offered in high schools as dual enrollment. This funding plan only applies to previously existing dual enrollment programs that offer both high school and UW course credits. The UW System will cover the full cost of tuition for Course Option participants enrolled in UW courses offered through the dual enrollment program at a high school as a “stop-gap” measure.

Wisconsin Education Fairs Wisconsin Education Fairs, offered since 1978, provide information about postsecondary options available in Wisconsin and beyond. Students and their families can meet with staff members from approximately 100 postsecondary institutions. Participants include all UW universities and Colleges, Wisconsin’s independent colleges and universities, Wisconsin technical colleges, and numerous out-of-state institutions. Many community colleges, trade schools, and national service organizations, such as the armed forces, are also represented. All interested persons are invited to attend these free fairs. Please visit www.wefs.org for additional information including a detailed schedule, list of participants, and other details.

Fall 2014 Edition
Wisconsin Covenant The Wisconsin Covenant Program is a staterun, goal-setting program created to help students prepare for college and earn money that will help them pay for it. While the program has been discontinued, those that signed the pledge are still able to receive benefits. Seniors graduating in the 2014-2015 academic year are the last class eligible for the program. Current seniors would have signed the pledge in 8th or 9th grade. In order to fulfill the agreement, students must:

• Graduate from a Wisconsin high school.
UW HELP Pilots New Service
• Maintain at least a B average while in high school.
Open Conference Calls
• Take high school classes that meet or exceed college preparatory requirements.
UW HELP will be piloting a new service for school counselors starting in early October. Available to you will be a free and open conference call.
• Demonstrate good citizenship and engage in activities that support the community, including 30 hours of documented service.
The initial conference call will discuss common issues and resolutions with the UW System’s application for admission. We will also take questions from participants.
• Apply and do all that is necessary to gain admission to a UW System institution, a Wisconsin Technical College, and/or a Wisconsin private college or university.
Subsequent conference calls will continue to cover the application for admission, various services that UW HELP has created and guest speakers. We estimate that each conference call will take no longer than 30 minutes.
• Apply for state and federal financial aid by April 1, 2015.
Our new service is free, but does require a simple registration so that we can grant access to participants. We will be sending an email introducing this service in the next few days. If you do not receive the email and are interested in UW HELP conference calls, email uwhelp@uwex.edu or call us at 800.442.6459
• Complete Wisconsin Covenant required forms by April 1, 2015. In return for meeting these goals and keeping the pledge, a Wisconsin Covenant Student will be recognized as a Wisconsin Covenant Scholar, expect to earn a place within the Wisconsin Covenant partnered systems of higher education, and receive a financial aid package, based on their family’s financial need, to help make college affordable. The financial aid package will include grants of $250 – 2,500 per year for four years.
