What is Circle K? C
ircle K International (CKI) is the premier collegiate and university community service, leadership development, and friendship organization in the world. Its mission is to Developing college and university students into a global network of responsible citizens and leaders with a lifelong commitment to service. Built on the premises of providing altruistic service, developing leadership potential, and building friendships, CKI has more than 12,600 members in 17 nations, and continues to make a positive impact on the world every day. CKI is a student-led organization, organized and sponsored by a Kiwanis club on a college or university campus. CKI is a self-governing organization and elects its own officers, conducts its own meetings, and determines its own service activities. CKI blends community service and leadership training with the opportunity to meet other college students around the world. Projects such as the Six Cents Initiative, CKIâ€&#x;s International fundraiser that aims to provide water to the 2.2 billion children worldwide who lack safe drinking water, bring CKI members together to make a difference in the world. CKI began in 1936 as a Kiwanis club service project to provide an opportunity for capable, ambitious, and worthy young men to acquire a college education by assisting them, where necessary, with their financial problems, by means of a scholarship fund, if available, or securing parttime employment. Soon after the concept of CKI was recognized and accepted, the element of community service was introduced, thus creating an appealing outlet for collegians around the globe. Today, CKI stands as the largest collegiate service organization with 12,600 members on 500 campuses worldwide. Embodied by its tenets of leadership, fellowship, and service at the club, district and International levels, CKI continues to grow through service to the world's campuses and communities.
The Kiwanis Family The Kiwanis family consists of K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Club International, Key Leader, Circle K International, Action Club and Kiwanis International. These programs represent members of the Kiwanis family at various levels.
K-Kids and Builders Club are two of the groups which focus on younger student from elementary to middle schools.
Along with Key Club, Key Leader is a program focused on high school students.
Circle K international is one which puts its focus on college and university students.
Both the Action Club and Kiwanis International are programs which place focus on adults in the society. However, The Action Club is a special case as it deals with adults living with various disabilities.

Major Partners & Initiatives The United Nations Children‟s Fund (UNICEF) was created after World War II to provide emergency aid to children in Europe and Asia. Today UNICEF works in more than 150 countries and territories, supported entirely with voluntary contributions, improve the lives of children, by helping them meet basic needs and expanding their possibilities. Across the globe, wherever vulnerable children are struggling to survive, UNICEF is there with medicine, vaccines, clean water and nutrition. Over the years, UNICEF has saves more children‟s lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. At the 2005 Circle K International Convention (ICON) in Greensboro, North Carolina, the International Board of Trustees passed a resolution supporting UNICEF, and at ICON 2007 in Portland, Oregon, CKI announced the “Saving Lives: The Six Cents Initiative”, to supply clean water and sanitation to children worldwide. The Kiwanis family, in partnership with UNICEF, has brought forward the “Eliminate Project”, which sets out to eliminate maternal and Neonatal tetanus from the face of the Earth by raising US$ 100 Million by 2015.
Six Cents Initiative In order to stay healthy It is important to drink 1.5 to 2 liters of clean water every day. But more than 2.6 billion people lack even the most basic sanitary facilities and safe drinking water sources. That means one in five children in developing countries is susceptible to diseases caused by bacteria that grow in unsafe waters, and 5,000 die every day. The most common diseases lead to diarrhea and dehydration, which can lead to death if untreated.
8
Every day 1 in 8 babies born in the U.S. arrive too soon. Circle K members help by raising funds annually for March of Dimes programs to help prevent prematurity. The March of Dimes currently focuses on raising awareness of prematurity and reducing the rate of premature births, CKI members collect money to support the March of Dimes and participate in the annual March for Babies, which usually happens in late April.
At a cost of only 6 cents ($U.S), a mixture of sugar and salt called oral rehydration salts(ORS) offers the most effective and cheapest way to save lives during dehydration. CKI is working with UNICEF to provide these rehydration salts to those in need.
Water filters installed in schools and communal areas can benefit entire communities. Ultimately, the goal is to educate individuals on safe water and hygiene practices, and to provide supplies to produce safe water supplies for communities.
CKI‟s Six Cent Initiative with UNICEF is designed to help children get the rehydration salts they need to survive dehydration spells. But that‟s not all. With the money raised, UNICEF also is working to provide longterm solutions for the problem, which includes providing clean water resources through the installation of filtration and sanitation systems.
Circle K clubs and members wishing to make donations to the “Six Cents Initiative”, should direct checks to Kiwanis International Foundation (3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN 46268) with a nation that is for UNICEF / water and sanitation programming.
THE ELIMINATE PROJECT CKI‟s most recent collaboration with UNICEF is “The Eliminated Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus”. The Kiwanis family, in partnership with UNICEF, is working to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus by raising US$ 110 million by 2015. With the Eliminate Project, Kiwanis and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every nine minutes, nearly 60,000 newborn children every year. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are excruciating. Tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, 129 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized.
This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take $110 million and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forced to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, together they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. In doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.
