“Whenever we get these types of modules I’m always amazed by the amount of work that gets achieved by everyone in such a short space of time. Obviously, I managed to get my Rubbish Orchestra piece completed in the nick of time but really the whole point of field is not the final outcome but the things I had to do to get to that outcome. So what have I learnt from this whole experience? The first thing I would have to say is how I have learnt to not just wait for opportunities to get handed to me on a plate but to actually go out and look for problems that need to be solved. The whole reason the rubbish orchestra came about was because my house was having an issue with the amount of rubbish we had and I looked at that and wondered how I could apply it to a concept affecting the wider world, namely the millions of children around the world who don’t have access to toys and objects that allow us to express our playfulness. Another thing I noticed about this task was that it was one of the first times that I have ever linked a project to such a large world problem, I usually just stick to things that either 20
directly affect me or my client but this process has allowed me to open up a little bit and start to think about problems that have a longer lasting impact on a greater range of people. I think it is a social responsibility and necessity of a designer to look at the ways they can improve the lives of others so I’m glad that this project made us think about wellbeing and made me look at other peoples lives. One of the things that I would criticise myself for is potentially not risking enough and not pushing enough boundaries. I decided to stick to an existing piece of music and just replicate it and I think the next step from here would be to push myself out of my comfort area and create a completely original composition as overall the whole point of this project was to find a new way to allow people who don’t necessarily get to create stuff that opportunity. Going forward in future projects I think I will definitely try to become more of a risk taker. This module was called Play and Creativity and I think that playing around is one of the best things I can do in order to produce some truly unique work. Marcus Price, reflecting on Field module

Ceramics MA/PgD/PgC
The MA Ceramics Programme’s aim is to enable each student to identify their true interests and concerns as artists, designers or makers and to develop appropriate methods to explore their ideas and articulate or express them effectively in imaginative or innovative ways, through the medium of ceramics. It also engages students with the key theories and contemporary debates, thus fostering their understandings of the ways in which these influence the development, expression and communication of their ideas, which will impact upon the success of their future practice as artists, makers or academics. Ceramics is a medium in which the practitioner occupies very different positions and frequently has opposing priorities and values drawn from previous personal experiences, technical competence and tacit knowledge. The MA Ceramics programme is for individuals seeking to extend and develop their practice as well as deepen their knowledge and understandings of the subject, as future practitioners, researchers or academics. Course content includes: • Developing authorship of advanced studio work • Challenging norms and questioning conventions through fusing materiality and concept This programme of learning is driven by the student’s self-defined project. To support this, each student is allocated a Personal Tutor and an additional subject-specialist member of staff from within the School. Together they form the Supervisory Team. The nature of the discipline is such that the course will rely on skilled practitioners as the key facilitators of learning, and, reflecting this, a variety of delivery mechanisms will be deployed. However, they will all have a common focus in that they will seek to develop the skills of students as proactive and reflective independent learners.
