EXPLORING MY CREATIVITY AT CARDIFF MET The best thing for me about studying illustration at Cardiff Met has probably been my tutors. They just offer so much encouragement, and they really care about their students. They want you to develop as artists, but also as people, so that you’re putting out work that’s going to have a really positive impact in the world. There’s also so much encouragement to explore your practice and try different mediums and different fields. You really develop your work in ways you’d never have expected. The encouragement and passion the tutors bring to the table creates a safe environment where you can really push yourself and your creativity. JOSHUA DONKOR ILLUSTRATION BA (HONS)

HOW MY EARLY YEARS DEGREE HELPED ME SET UP MY OWN PLAY CENTRE Studying the importance of play really helped my decision to work with children from birth upwards. I now own and run a children’s role play centre which provides various play opportunities for children from birth to the age of seven. I’m so proud I have opened my business. There is nothing more rewarding than watching children letting go in play. FFION THOMPSON EARLY YEARS GRADUATE

MY DEGREE LED ME TO MY DREAM JOB During my degree I completed a work placement module and this gave me my first insight into journalism. I ended up completing a week’s placement at WalesOnline and I was able to gain valuable advice and information from experienced journalists. After graduating, I secured a job at WalesOnline and now I do the job I love, day in, day out. I have covered all sorts of stories and my work has been impacting communities all over the UK. In 2019 I was crowned Young Journalist of The Year. I wouldn’t have been able to do what I have done without my degree and experiences at Cardiff Met. AAMIR MOHAMMED MEDIA GRADUATE

MY CARDIFF MET EXPERIENCE HELPED ME SECURE EMPLOYMENT I began my studies with an introduction to youth work, which gave me the taste for youth and community work, before progressing onto the Foundation Certificate. I volunteered as a youth worker in a busy youth club and obtained the 100 hours of youth work experience hours required to progress onto the BA (Hons). Through this volunteering I was able to secure my first paid youth work employment. Five months into my degree studies I gained a second paid job with an exciting project, where I had the opportunity to engage young people in street based work. MY INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT YEAR
AT DELOITTE
My journey to working at Deloitte started when Cardiff Met announced that Deloitte was coming to the University to deliver a talk on the 12-month placement opportunities available for second year students. I believe industrial placements should be treated as seriously as any graduate role, and may be even more significant. They allow you to build connections, help you grow both personally and professionally and gain more of an understanding of the working world. These roles are so much more than just something to put on your CV, they allow you to find a way to develop skills and the style of working – something I think I will bring into my third year. LAUNCHING MY BUSINESS ‘SPORTFOLIO’ I never had an exact career path in mind, and I think that’s why Sport Management at Cardiff Met is such a good option, due to its flexibility and the vast amount of subject areas the degree covers. From finance to sports events and marketing, it covers a range of topics and gives you the chance to tailor your degree based on your desired career path. Thanks to my degree I was able to create Sportfolio, a platform linking student athletes with their next step in their sporting career. I am very much at the beginning of my journey, and I have big plans for the next few years, but I am grateful of the foundations the Sport Management degree and the support Cardiff Met gave me. MY ROBOTICS INTERNSHIP AT CARDIFF MET I started working as an undergraduate intern at the EUREKA Robotics Centre, one of Cardiff Met’s leading research centres, under the supervision of two of my lecturers. I had the chance of learning about the latest robotics research & development, developing skills in 3D printing technologies, and gaining lots of knowledge on robotic arms. The Centre helped nurture my ability to develop and program robots to solve real challenges experienced by humans, and I managed to conduct successful demonstrations. Through the Centre, I also worked as a STEM Communicator delivering robotics outreach sessions in schools. This was a great chance to pass on my knowledge and passion to young learners through interactive workshops. The internship has empowered me, helped in my career development, and expanded my knowledge enormously. AVEEN NAJM BSC (HONS) COMPUTER SCIENCE
