Cardiff School of Art & Design
cover story
Tomasz Zawistowski BA (hons) Graphic Communication 2010 What made you want to study at CSAD? I had heard about the school from some of my friends who used to study here. I went to see the summer show, and that helped to make up my mind. It might sound strange but as soon as I walked into the CSAD building I knew it was the right place for me. What are you doing/planning to do, career wise? At present I design interiors and furniture and help to promote a small company which specializes in an unusual design for households. I try not to make long distance plans for the future but I hope that I will always stay in the creative industry. What attracted you to study in Cardiff? Cardiff is an unusual city, it is big enough to have all the facilities you need as a student but also small enough to make you feel at home.
3
What inspires your work? I feel inspired by individual people, their personal lives, their personalities, behaviour and tiny incidents they come across in their daily struggles. It is the insignificant that is crucial, grasping that glimpse of a moment in order to create. Many times it is the influence of other artists and their work. The past is what you cannot ignore as a designer simply because your piece is the result of others’ pieces. It is also your duty to build bridges between what has been said and what is there yet to be said. How did the course at CSAD help you to progress? It helped me because it didn’t stop me from progressing in my own way. I never felt pressured to do anything I didn’t feel convinced about. It gave me the freedom to be myself but also guided me when needed.

Cardiff School of Art & Design will remain a significant force in the arts and creative industries, with a reputation for programmes, research and enterprise that befits a European capital city. We believe in the innate creativity of the individual and seek to provide opportunities for students and staff to develop their best talents. CSAD graduates are distinguished as being makers and thinkers, capable of originality and inventiveness. 2
welcome
Welcome from Dean At Cardiff School of Art & Design, we believe in being at the top of our game and that includes being able to deliver programmes that really make a difference. We give our students every opportunity to explore all kinds of creative and professional possibilities, in an environment that recognizes the importance of taking risks and seizing the initiative. We are interested in ideas and how these are examined through practice.
We are situated in the real world and recognize the roles that architects, artists, makers and designers can play, not least in the recovery from recession. We are especially committed to equipping all of our students with the courage and skills needed in a world where they will have much to offer. Because of this, our graduates are able to make a difference, wherever they are and in whatever field they find themselves in. Being a CSAD graduate means a lot and employers know this. Our students work on real projects for real companies, or show their work in public arts venues, all before completing their studies. They know how to get on. All of this happens in one of Europe’s most vibrant capital cities, where culture and the arts are extraordinarily lively and the mountains and sea close at hand. It’s a city of architects, designers, makers and artists. It’s also a city of sport and entertainment, not to mention Dr Who, Merlin and Sherlock! We look forward to meeting you and to welcoming you further to Cardiff School of Art & Design.

“The city itself is lovely. There are lots of arcades, old buildings and the parks. You forget you’re in the city for a while. I’m definitely staying. With companies like Tactile Bosch and Chapter based in Cardiff, I’ve made a lot of professional contacts. There are a lot more opportunities here because the course and the industry are up-and-coming in this area.” Adam Travers, BA (hons) Illustration 2010

Undergraduate courses at CSAD from 2012
48
From its establishment in 1865, Cardiff School of Art & Design has never stopped changing. Why should it? Creativity is never at a standstill; it’s always at the heart of cultural experience and the forefront of economic possibility. We believe CSAD’s position as one of Europe’s noted arts schools can be ascribed to its ability to both be in touch with the times and ahead of trends.
We are in the process of introducing a new cutting-edge undergraduate curriculum, along with new degrees. Our students will work in depth and with commitment in their chosen field, whilst working alongside students from other disciplines, sharing ideas and processes. The boundaries erected between art, design and architectural disciplines are being taken down, whist preserving the very best of our individual subject expertise. So, students on the ceramics, textiles and the new designer-making programmes will have opportunities to work together, as will our illustrators, painters and printmakers. Our new programme in architecture will take inspiration from sculpture; our music technology, industrial design and graphics programmes will experiment with sound and space. This development springs from our commitment to enabling our graduates to become flexible, innovative and businesslike, prepared for work environments where they are likely to need to work across disciplines, as well as in their own area. Increasingly graduates in the creative occupations are building-up ‘portfolio careers’, where they work on a number of projects not necessarily always in their discipline fields. This requires considerable self-reliance and initiative. Our new portfolio will aim to promote this. Tomasz Zawistowski, a CSAD Graphic Communications graduate from 2010, whose image is on the front cover of this prospectus, is currently designing interiors and furniture, as well as working in graphics. He is not alone in making such departures; one of our Textile graduates was snapped-up by an independent film company at the Summer Show last year, for work as a set designer. There are heaps of examples of this and it’s not just about opportunities for graduates,
it’s also what’s happening in the sector. Creative industries and occupations are no longer (if they ever were) really specific to a narrow range of skills and ideas. Take for example, the phenomenal work of Thomas Heatherwick. It’s impossible to define him as an architect, sculptor, industrial designer or poet. His studio employs people with degree backgrounds in architecture, urban infrastructure, product design, model-making, fabrication, landscape design, fine art and curation. Their teamwork produces work of extraordinary quality and breathtaking beauty. From 2012 our undergraduate portfolio will be: HNC Architectural Design & Technology BSc (hons) Architectural Design & Technology BA (hons) Architecture BA (hons) Ceramics BA (hons) Designer Maker BA (hons) Fine Art BA (hons) Graphic Communication BA (hons) Illustration BA/BSc (hons) Industrial Design BA (hons) Media & Visual Culture BA (hons) Music Technology & Sonic Arts BSc (hons) Music Technology & Design BA (hons) Textiles This includes three new awards: BA (hons) Architecture* will provide the broad range of skills and architectural understanding to achieve RIBA part 1 for those aspiring to become architects. We will be using the inspiration of an art school to bring a fresh approach to building form and design. This will be empowered by advanced understanding of the use and potential of sophisticated technologies, along with a real commitment to archiecture that is sustainable in all respects. 49
We will be maintaining our interests in interior architecture in this degree. BA (hons) Designer-maker* will enable engagement with areas such as jewellery, accessories, flatware, furniture and musical instruments. Although centered on the designer-maker being craft based, it will engage with issues of manufacture. Students will be able to work with a wide range of technologies and materials, including glass, textiles and metals. BA (hons) Industrial Product Design will provide greater opportunities to work in the design of high-end manufactured products, goods and services that meet the need of a society in change, with deep issues of sustainability. Anything is possible in this degree, from boat design to the development of disability aids, from medical equipment to bike storage, from sports equipment to mobile technologies. * subject to validation
