Sport Scholarships The aim of the Cardiff Met Sports Bursary & Scholarship Scheme is to assist students of exceptional sporting ability to develop their academic and sporting talents to their fullest potential, and encourage the development of University sport. The scheme offers a learner-centered experience in which scholars receive guidance and support, enabling them to take greater control of their lifestyle to facilitate the co-development of their academic and sporting potential. Recipients of our scholarship will receive financial support up to a maximum of £1000. The University can provide the following services which relate specifically to the sport for which the scholarship is held: Conditioning/Fitness Testing and Monitoring: Access to fitness rooms and weight training facilities, advice on fitness training, and fitness testing at regular intervals. Cardiff School of Sport Taught Degrees Cardiff Met is one of the UK’s largest providers of sport-related postgraduate studies. The taught pathways focus on the academic disciplines that underpin our understanding of the sporting phenomena. The Scheme currently has over 150 students enrolled on a full-time and part-time basis. It is also possible to submit the dissertation project in the form of business plans, development plans, marketing plans, portfolios of evaluated projects from the professional context or a publishable peer reviewed journal article. General Programme Information Length of Programmes Full-time - not less than 12 months and not more than 24 months. Part-time - not less than 24 months and not more than 60 months. Entry Requirements Applicants should normally possess a good honours degree (2.1 or above) in a related programme of study or a relevant professional qualification. Non-graduates without formal qualifications will also be considered. For MSc Sport Psychology applicants must be eligible for the graduate basis for registration as a Chartered Psychologist. Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, desk research, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. MSc Performance Analysis The programme prepares students for a range of careers in performance analysis. The course develops analysts who can comprehensively investigate actual sports performance or performance in training. The course promotes a balance of vocationallyspecific, applied process skills and a theoretical research awareness that can be applied to tactical evaluation and technique analysis. Students will develop problem-solving skills that support the decision making necessary to improve performance, and in doing so provide performance analysis solutions that meet the needs of the coach, athlete and multidisciplinary support team. Students are able to develop their understanding of the theory behind the workflows and analysis systems that inform elite performance and skills in a variety of contexts. This programme is unique in its combination of theoretical ideas, practical experience and exposure to the spectrum of commercial hardware and software. MSc Physical Education and Sport This programme provides qualified Physical Education teachers with the theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding to further their career in education. The primary aim of the programme is to prepare teachers to move into a variety of leadership and management roles including, subject leadership. MSc Sport Coaching This course is aimed at practicing coaches who wish to further their career and enhance their personal and professional development. The primary aim is to develop reflective practitioners by engaging them in the process of applying theory to their practice and finding solutions to their coaching problems. The course focuses on experiential and applied learning and an interdisciplinary and holistic approach to sport coaching. Student centred teaching approaches of Action Research and Problem Based Learning are utilised in the core modules and a broad range of options allows the students to meet their specific learning needs. Students and external examiners have, described the teaching and assessment methods as ‘innovative and at the cutting edge of teaching and learning in coaching science’. Students from this course have developed careers in sport coaching, teaching, sport science support, further and higher education, and sports development. The programme also provides an excellent spring board for students wishing to progress to PhD study. MSc Sport & Exercise Medicine The overall aim of the programme is to educate medical doctors, chartered physiotherapists and registered osteopaths in the field of Sport and Exercise Medicine. The intention of the postgraduate certificate and diploma is to provide students with a breadth of knowledge across sport and exercise medicine and the necessary skills to apply theory into practice. Students are required to undertake clinical attachments throughout the taught element of the course to aid understanding of the multidisciplinary approach to Sports Medicine. The results are written up in a logbook which can be used as evidence of Continued Professional Development and for annual review purposes. The full time course is particularly suited to those doctors who wish to pursue higher training in Sport and Exercise Medicine and to those physiotherapists and osteopaths wanting to work in elite level sport. Clinical Placements: As a student you will be required to undertake clinical attachments and work placements with a variety of teams and sports medicine specialisms. MA Sport Management and Leadership This is an exciting, contemporary programme targeted at professionals and practitioners working in the sport and leisure industry who are seeking new opportunities. The programme is equally attractive to recent graduates seeking to develop their knowledge and employment potential as well as international students who wish to study at Wales’ premier University for sport. Drawing on management and leadership perspectives, it critically examines the sport and leisure industry, its environment and current challenges. There is a clear focus on applied and experiential learning. This is achieved by drawing extensively on sports organisations operating across all sectors of the industry and on using external speakers - experts in the field who bring real life issues and challenges into the classroom. A quality experience is provided with teaching undertaken in small groups and an emphasis on interaction and group work. Assessment varies from essays to presentations and plans with students critically evaluating and reflecting on specific issues. The contact teaching time for each 20 credit module is four days with some additional days allocated for induction and presentations. All students study five core modules which embrace key management and leadership topics as well as research skills and developing a personal leadership plan. There is one optional module and students can decide whether to undertake this or an alternative independent piece of work. Completion of the MA requires students to undertake a sustained project either a traditional dissertation or a Final Project. The ‘live’ Final Project is a further unique feature available to those with appropriate experience. MSc Sport Psychology and MSc Applied Sport Psychology The MSc in Sport Psychology (BPS accredited) and MSc in Applied Sport Psychology provide candidates with a thorough theoretical and practical grounding in sport psychology - and are suited to those aspiring to become practicing sport psychologists, as well as teachers, lecturers and coaches. Successful completion of the MSc Sport Psychology forms Stage 1 training towards BPS Chartered Status and will enable students to progress onto Stage 2 training. MSc Strength and Conditioning The academic and applied coaching expertise within the discipline of Sports Conditioning, Rehabilitation and Massage within the Cardiff School of Sport offers an MSc in Strength and Conditioning. The world class sports facilities, applied focus of producing the strength and conditioning coaches of tomorrow and unique Internship Module makes it an attractive academic experience for practitioners, sports specific coaches, personal trainers and other fitness industry professions. MA Sport, Body and Society The body politic has become ever more significant, and has become a focus as an area for investigation to enhance and expand the socio-cultural study of sport. Whilst drawing upon major areas of study within the socio-cultural study of sport, this degree takes a focused approach to recent developments in the field, distinguishing this from other sociology of sport programmes. The course content is informed by current and innovative research, and has been praised for its scope and flexibility in assessment that allows students to pursue and develop individual interests. In most cases student’s crafting of these ideas are applied to future career aspirations. Career Potential: Awareness and knowledge of social issues by specialists in the field of sport is increasingly in demand where there is an interest in working with people. Sports sociologists are sought after in a range of sport related occupations that include; community sports development programmes, management of sport/leisure facilities in the private sector, sports administration roles, sports media and the teaching profession. Further, this programme is ideal for those with aspirations of a research career or study at PhD level. The course is designed to foster a range of transferable skills. Modules: Modules are designed to focus on a range of issues, contexts and approaches to explorations of the body in sport. These include becoming/being disabled, human interface with technology, jock culture, sexuality in sport, female bodies in sports such as boxing, taking risks and cheating in sport.
