“Enthusiasm is so important to me as a lecturer when I'm looking at applicants. As a University, we will look at your academic proďŹ le to make sure that you are ready to take that step on to one of our courses, but enthusiasm and a passion for the subject tells me a lot about a person when I am considering them as a potential student. You don't necessarily need to have studied technology-related subjects before, nor do you need programming experience, but students who are enthusiastic and keen to learn are more likely to be successful in their studies.â€?

YOUR LEARNING EXPERIENCE A student-centered approach to learning and teaching is encouraged through the use of a broad range of teaching strategies, practical labs and workshop sessions to develop technical understanding and abilities. All students are supported academically and pastorally by the programme team, led by the programme director and supported by year tutors. In addition, all students are supported by the Personal Tutor team within the School, who provide a point of contact for general academic and pastoral issues. The School has active student societies in Computing and Games, as well as a BCS Student Chapter, providing a wide range of events, activities and ďŹ eld trips throughout the academic year.

“Gaining work experience in your relevant field is always encouraged at Cardiff Met – in fact it was a compulsory module on my Computer Science course! During my placement at Circle IT in Cardiff I experienced the process of developing a product from scratch and meeting the needs of the user - something I had only ever done in theory before. I also developed a greater understanding of IT systems in general and how to manage those systems effectively.”

Sam Conboy, BSc (Hons) Computer Science

8

PLACEMENTS To strengthen the bond with potential employers, all students across our undergraduate degrees have the opportunity to gain work experience through work based learning modules in year two. Students are able to complete either a year out on placement, a summer placement, or a 15-day (minimum) placement during the academic year. These placements are instrumental in placing the academic studies in context by providing hands-on experience, reinforcing learning objectives and exposing students to potential employers.

9

WHERE OUR STUDENTS GO

Over the past few years, our students have been successful in obtaining work placements in nationally competitive schemes with Microsoft, HP, General Electric and the Met OfďŹ ce and the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.

10

“In between my second and third years, I undertook a traineeship at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. My job was a support role where I dealt with everything from software problems to broken hardware – and everything else in between. The placement made me consider looking for jobs in Europe as well as further afield.”
