FCOURSES!
FOR ADULT LEARNERS
Welcome to the Cardiff Metropolitan University Summer School for Adult Learners 2019 which provides a variety of FREE courses to adult learners from 17th 28th June 2019. We are delighted that Summer School 2019 is running during The Festival of Learning (previously Adult Learners’ Week) - an annual campaign celebrating and promoting adult learning opportunities. At Cardiff Metropolitan University we aim to ensure that adults of any background or ethnic group are given a fair and equal opportunity to study in a supported manner. We are committed to ensuring that everyone with the determination, skills and desire to access Higher Education should be able to do so. We understand how important it is to work closely with local communities to help raise aspirations and encourage people who think higher education is “not for them” to start thinking about the opportunities available. For whatever reason, if in the past, you have felt that a higher education course would not be for you, we have introduced a range of measures designed to make studying here as simple and flexible as possible. Living in such uncertain economic times, you may be worried about how you are going to develop your skills and reach your potential in such a difficult job market. We understand with all the commitments that come with modern life - work, family, and social-life - it’s not easy juggling all of these things and considering studying at the same time. You may feel you are not
bright enough to study at a University, perhaps you didn’t do well in school and life has taken you away from education. Often, adults who have been out of study for a long time lack the confidence to return to learning or think people will judge them harshly. At Cardiff Metropolitan University, we offer a range of free and interesting learning opportunities. Our courses can help you to grow in confidence and help focus your career or learning plan. The Cardiff Met Summer School is a great opportunity to try something new, for fun or to improve your career potential. Trying a Summer School course might just be the start of something exciting, which could open more doors for you through progression onto one of our accredited community courses and ultimately, provide a progression pathway to full-time or part-time study at the University. Summer School is also a great way to get a taste of university life, especially if you are thinking of studying here. Last year many of the adults who attended the Cardiff Met Summer School went on to enrol on a further course at Cardiff Met in September, many onto Foundation courses or our accredited programmes, and some straight onto degrees. This year that could be you! Whoever you are we have a course that you will enjoy and feel comfortable studying. Janet Jones Community Engagement Officer (Programmes) Cardiff Metropolitan University
WHO CAN ATTEND? Our Summer School is open to all adults over 18 years old. Places on Summer School can go quickly. Please be aware therefore that we do give priority to those Learners living in areas of multiple deprivation and those falling into one of the following categories:

A LEARNER’S JOURNEY
This story celebrates the success of a learner and will hopefully be an inspiration to others who may be considering a return to learning. The story is told in the learner’s own words and shows what a difference learning has made and how her life has improved through the process.
HELEN’S JOURNEY I’ll admit to not being the best student in my early years. My poor Mum had to face weekly visits from the truancy officer because of my poor attendance record. After intervention from social services I faced the humiliation of having to re-do my fourth and fifth form years. My teachers directed me on to sixth form but after two years of being forced to take exams, which I continuously failed, I chose to opt out. I worked in fast food shops to fund my passage to work abroad for a year. I came back after travelling full of zest and enrolled at Rumney Technical College obtaining 5 ‘O’ levels and 1 ‘A’ Level. I have enjoyed a very interesting and diverse career path, which has not only taken me around the world but also provided for my family. The main feature in my life journey had been the steady stream of caring roles, which I have had to undertake from the age of 14. I cared for my Mum, helped 2 Cardiff Met Summer School for Adult Learners
re-habilitate my eldest sister after an assault and along with my husband, as a parent I have had the difficult task of caring for an autistic son. I spent twenty-six years looking after our son at home, taking all my time and effort. However, when my son left home, the opportunity to reconsider my life path occurred and I was ready to address my next challenge. Within two weeks I found myself enrolled onto a Psychology and Counselling course in Llanrumney Hub. The whole process of enrolment was easy, choice of courses excellent and availability of venues and times could be easily fitted to suit anyone. At the age of 51 it was a daunting task walking into a classroom environment especially after my past track record. However, I was welcomed as an equal, treated with respect and found the diversity of characters on the courses so refreshing compared to prior learning experiences. The adult learning team were excellent. Tutors genuinely want to help you regain those talents hidden inside every individual and with lots of guidance, support and a few laughs, I found myself eager to proceed. With much encouragement from my tutor, I took part in three Widening Access Summer School courses at Cardiff Met. By visiting the University and actually experiencing university life, I found my learning skills developing, ambition rising and with each certificate gained, my confidence grew.
Health and Social Sciences caught my interest as I had so much experience and transferable skills already acquired by being an active carer for my son. In addition the reflective skills course showed me how to learn, how to evaluate what was being taught, and it demonstrated that failure too was a learning element. The class structure was fun and easy to understand, leading me to submit an essay to assess my reflective skills and gain 10 credits at Level 3. All credits collected add to a portfolio for any prospective employer, or to gain access to University. My support has come from so many directions including encouragement from my tutors and my fellow class friends as we have all come up through the ranks together. There is an amazing sense of camaraderie amongst us all. As a mature student, tutors encourage you to recognise and value pre-existing skills from life experiences. Staff, tutors and students work together in all aspects of your learning journey and you are treated as an equal. Cardiff Met have an excellent student support service to help with anything from applications to funding and provide help for every student, collectively and individually. Lastly, my wonderful supportive and humorous husband. His promise of making dinner on my ‘school nights’ clinched the deal of joining Cardiff Met. I am now a Cardiff Met student on the 2nd year of my BSc in Health and Social Sciences. I hope to be able to take this knowledge to gain employment defending the rights of adults with learning difficulties and supporting the families who care for them, after all it is something I have been doing for the last 26 years of my life.

ACADEMIC SKILLS
BAKING TECHNOLOGY
Cardiff Metropolitan University, Llandaff Campus
Cardiff Metropolitan University, Llandaff Campus
These sessions form an exciting opportunity for you to improve your academic skills. Focusing on four essential areas – writing, research, note-taking and time-management – these workshops will be very useful in preparing you for further study, either at college or on one of our accredited Widening Access courses. In the ‘writing’ session, we will look at how you can write clearly and effectively. We will also consider some common writing mistakes and how to avoid them.
This two day course has been designed to introduce you to the science of baked products. In this course you will learn processing of bread and cake while learning about the role of gluten in baked goods and how it can be replaced. Fibre is also an important element in our health and most of gluten free baked products don’t have enough fibre, therefore in this course you will investigate the use of vegetables as a good source of fibre in baked goods.
Research is about finding the right information. In this session, we will explore the resources available to do this and the types of sources you might find.
Egg is another key ingredient in the baking industry and there has been a lot of research to replace this key component for suitable vegan products. In this course you will make the product without egg while comparing it to the conventional product. Over the two days a number of products will be produced and discussed. At the end of each production, a sensory session will be set up to assess the quality of the products and learn the role of each ingredient.
Note-making will show you how writing down information can be turned into a more important part of learning. By thinking carefully about what you’re reading or listening to, you can remember much more about the topic. Time-management will show you how to organise your commitments and easily keep on top of the demands on your time. Getting organised means you will be able to tick off each of the tasks on your 'to do' list and feel that sense of satisfaction that you are making progress! 6 Cardiff Met Summer School for Adult Learners
