New Floodlit 3G Football Pitch Made Possible By Your Donations!
T
he new floodlit FIFA 2 Star 3G football pitch on the Cyncoed Campus has been completed and is now being used by students, staff and the local community. Made possible by your generous donations and the recent Government matched funding scheme (which matched 50p in every £1 donated) the facility has transformed football training provisions in Cardiff… Continued on Page 3

elcome to the seventh edition of Horizons, the newsletter for Cardiff Met donors and supporters. If you are reading this for the first time, possibly as a result of our recent telephone campaign, welcome! You are part of our growing community of alumni, staff and friends of Cardiff Met who share our passion for higher education and what it can achieve. In that vein, I am delighted to be able to reveal some of the fantastic projects that have been made possible by your support, such as 3G Sports Pitch, the Outdoor Woodland Learning Centre, research and community projects, scholarships and prizes - all of which are having a huge impact here at Cardiff Met.

We have also been ranked 8th amongst UK Universities for student employability. Work is progressing on the new building for School of Art and Design on the Llandaff Campus, which will bring all of our Art & Design students together on one site from September 2014. If you would like to visit and have a look around the new building, just drop us a line and we shall make the appropriate arrangements. Thank you for all the support you give to Cardiff Met. It’s really appreciated.

Gift Aid and Tax Relief for donors Don’t forget that if you are a UK taxpayer, the University can claim Gift Aid. This government scheme will make your donation worth 25% more to us and at no extra cost to you! All you need to do is fill in the Gift Aid section of the donation form or tell us verbally that you want us to claim Gift Aid. If you are a Higher Rate taxpayer, you can also request a rebate for the difference between the basic rate and higher rate when you submit your tax returns.

…Continued from front page The aim of the centre will be to increase participation and provide a much needed facility for the demands of the curriculum, student sport and the local community. Thank you to everyone who donated when the matched scheme was running as without your support, none of this would be possible.

The 3G pitch is an absolute Godsend for our football programme. Former student footballers will all remember the limitations of training on half the hockey pitch and playing on an often muddy grass surface. The new floodlit pitch is FIFA 2* rated, so we can host premiership and international teams, but first and foremost it gives us a high quality teaching, coaching and community facility that meets all the needs of our men’s and women’s football players. Telephone Campaign Update
A
huge thank you to all of you that took part in our 2014 Alumni Telephone Campaign: Over the two weeks of calling more than £20,000 has been pledged to Cardiff Met’s Development Fund! This will provide a vital source of funds to strengthen research, enhance the student experience, and provide scholarships to enable talented individuals to pursue higher education regardless of their financial background. For the student callers, it was a fantastic opportunity to speak to alumni who had studied the same course. Many received invaluable career advice and tips on how to make the most of the Cardiff Met experience such as Aled Holcombe.
3 | Cardiff Met Horizons 2014
Being a part of the telephone fundraising campaign for Cardiff Met has been fantastic! The position has given me great experience, allowing me to network and communicate with a lot of alumni who have had experience in the hospitality industry (which I am hoping to have a successful career in when I graduate).
I have found it amazing to speak to graduates from a wide range of time frames, some of them who studied with us before we were UWIC, let alone Cardiff Met! This has given me an insight into how the University has developed and grown over the past 40 years. I have been pleasantly surprised at how positive the alumni I have called have been, and more than happy to have a chat about their experiences at the university. This has also been a fantastic opportunity for me to interact with students from courses that I knew very little about before the campaign.
The gifts the alumni have given have allowed the university to continue its life changing and unique research, and have helped to secure the university’s long term future.
All of the callers have been so grateful for the support and great conversations we have had with our alumni.
Aled Holcombe 2nd year student BA hons International Hospitality Management
I feel incredibly grateful to have played a part in such an amazing project. I hope the alumni have enjoyed talking to us students as much as we have enjoyed talking to them, and that they may become more involved with university in a variety of ways. I also hope to have the opportunity to thank them in person at one of the donor thank you events this summer.

T
hanks to a generous donation from The Rayne Foundation, Dr. Wendy Keay-Bright’s Somability project has enabled local communities to benefit from pioneering creative technologies. The overarching goal of Somability is to invite adults with learning difficulties to take part in stimulating, creative movement activities in their daycare settings. Many people, either through disability or ageing, require high levels of support in all aspects of everyday life. Limitations in mobility can impact on physical and mental health, communication, creativity and self-confidence. In day care settings, staff are often at a loss to find meaningful, age appropriate activities that boost confidence and foster friendship, fun and a sense of community.
5 | Cardi Met Horizons 2014
Somability will offer these communities recreational activities through access to technologies typically used for computer games. However, the purpose is not to induce competition, but to explore rhythmic, dynamic movement as a means of self-expression and creativity. As well as promoting physical well-being, it has been proven that rhythmic activity fosters empathy and relaxation. The technologies will augment this experience by allowing full body movement, without the need for an input device or instruction. When people move, the sensors detect the movement and convert this into a visual or audio output. Devices such as Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox Kinect offer a range of exertion games.
Whilst these kinds of activities are known promote exercise and social interaction, our research has shown that many of these are too complex or physically demanding for people with more profound disabilities. In response to this, Somability will amplify even the most tentative movement, projecting images into the environment. Participants will be able to interact with graphical projections of their own bodies, which they can exaggerate and experiment with through their impulse to move. Observers will have a rare opportunity to follow the action rather than lead, to respond and join in, gradually building up the confidence necessary for a fully immersive, creative experience.

hen Regina Lasker died last July after bravely dealing with a complex health condition, her closest friend Michael decided to sponsor an annual Ceramics prize for a graduating student in her memory.
Regina “Gina” Lasker (26/8/1954 – 29/7/2013)
Regina Lasker was a bright, adventurous and vivacious woman who believed in living her life to the full. A Chartered Psychologist by profession, her specialist areas were health and environmental psychology. She qualified as a Feng Shui consultant and had an unshakeable belief that our environment, including our homes, has a profound effect on how we feel both mentally and physically, how we behave and how we live our lives.
Her love of design stemmed from her father’s work as an engineering draughtsman. She loved maths and could be quite precise and scientific. She had an unquenchable interest in all things. She collected a lot of art, loving vibrant colours. She had a love for watercolours especially miniatures, and Indian / Middle Eastern art. Her two main passions however were Interior Design and Ceramics/Glassware. There was a clear link between the interior design and her feng shui/environmental beliefs with her use of colour and placement.

Student awards given in memory make a lasting difference to the lives of our students
Fine Art student, James George was grateful to receive a travel bursary made in memory of Evan and Felicity Charlton. The award enabled him to reflect on his practice and influenced the direction that his work took in the final year of his degree.
Thanks to this generous award, I embarked on a week of research and exploration in the Brecon Beacons. My proposal was to immerse myself in the environment and use this time to reflect upon the way I document experience and memory in my art practice. The concepts that this project have allowed me to explore have formed a strong foundation for the research element of my degree, and this has been an invaluable aspect of my creative development."2013 Evan and Felicity Charlton Award winner James George BA (Hons) Fine Art
