Cardiff Met Conferences Keeping you in the Know Recent Events - 'Connect More' Wales Cardiff Met Conferences were proud to host the Jisc Connect More Wales event this July, at Llandaff campus. This oneday event focused on supporting practitioners, teachers, librarians and advisers in UK higher and further education to thrive in a digital world. Delegates had the opportunity to engage with peers, share best practice and find out more about making the most of Jisc’s advice and practical assistance, sector deals and shared services. The day consisted of plenary sessions in our large lecture theatre, workshops in the Hospitality Suite and adjacent rooms, and Digilab displays in the Atrium concourse. Cardiff Met were pleased to participate in the agenda with our Director of Library and Information Services, Paul Riley, giving the opening welcome and talk on digital strategies and an update on the recent
launch of Cardiff Met’s new School of Technologies. As well as welcoming over 100 delegates to the event we were delighted to have the special presence of two robot members of the Jisc team, Poppy and Elfie, who were on hand to entertain and provide information to the delegates throughout the day.
“Jisc held their annual Connect More in Wales meeting at Cardiff Metropolitan University this year and were delighted with the choice of venue. The space is very modern and had all the facilities we needed to run a successful event and Eva and the venue team provided excellent support during the run up to the event and on the day itself. Feedback received from our members has supported this.” Jisc
British Stammering Association Annual Conference At the end of August we were pleased to welcome over 150 residential delegates for the British Stammering Association (BSA) Annual National Conference. The delegates stayed at Cardiff Met Cyncoed campus for two nights to take part in a range of BSA 40th anniversary celebrations. The event included talks with special guests as well as interactive workshops, providing valuable skills and support to the stammering community. The conference also included children’s creative and musical activities as well as the first BSA open art exhibition.
“We would like to thank Cardiff Met’s conference team for all their help and support with our most successful conference ever. The team were supportive both in the run up and during the conference, nothing was too much trouble, exemplary customer care! Delegates commented on the facilities being excellent. We can highly recommend Cardiff Met University as a conference venue.” BSA

Enterprise Troopers National Final On 3rd July Cardiff Met had an exciting and uplifting day hosting the final of the Primary Schools Competition ‘Enterprise Troopers’ which is part of Big Ideas Wales, the Welsh Government’s Youth Entrepreneurship Services campaign to support young people in Wales from the age of 5-25. We welcomed 150 people to the grand final event, including over 50 children from primary schools across Wales. There were key note speeches from Ross McEwan (CEO of RBS/ Natwest Bank), Kirsty Williams (Cabinet Secretary for Education), Dr Cecilia Hannigan-Davies, (Acting Deputy Dean of Learning and Teaching at Cardiff Metropolitan University) and Chris Jones (S4C Presenter and Big Ideas Wales Role Model).
“It was a spectacularly successful day thank you so much. Everyone we spoke to said how well the venue worked and commented on the great buzz throughout the day. The catering and hospitality were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble, which makes our lives so much easier as event managers.” Cazbah
Each school gave presentations in the lecture theatre and were interviewed by judges about their enterprise projects. They were also able to take part in the ABC of Opera workshops, giving the children an interactive insight into the world or opera, led by the entrepreneur and opera singer Mark Llewelyn Evans. The Intellectual Property Office were also present at the event hosting a ‘karaoke shower’, which certainly created a lively atmosphere in the Atrium. We were delighted to host this event and it was a credit to primary schools across Wales.

Catering Team go the Extra Mile Who’s ready for lunch? Feedback from meetings and conferences always involves a keen focus on hospitality and not surprisingly given that it’s food and beverage which helps shape the delegate experience and their energy levels at an event. At Cardiff Met we focus on ensuring the highest level catering service is provided. This is reflected in our awards and initiatives such as our Eatwell range which received an ‘All Wales Healthy Option’ gold award, our ‘Food Made Good’ three star rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association and our Fairtrade status.
Our Catering Team recently received the Cardiff Met ‘Going the Extra Mile’ award. This is well deserved and a credit to the efforts of the whole team.
“Really proud of the Cyncoed catering team for winning ‘going the extra mile’ award and delighted for them all to get the recognition they richly deserve.” Andrew Phelps, Head of Catering

Ellis gets a refurb! 69 standard bedrooms got a complete refurbishment this summer converting them into new en-suite rooms. This recent refurb is a valuable asset to the accommodation offering at Cardiff Met, now bringing the number of en-suite rooms up to over 400 at Cyncoed campus with just over 800 en-suite rooms in total across the university.
Eisteddfod – The National ‘Welsh’ Festival Sut mae! Siwt mae! We were lucky this summer to spend a day on the The Cardiff Met stand at the National Eisteddfod. It was an interesting day and great to see so many people attending the event. Sally and Eva are enrolling on the Uwch Higher level Welsh classes this year and look forward to trying out their skills at every opportunity!
