Human Resource Management (MSc) Programme Overview

Developing your future career


The Masters in Human Resource Management (HRM) at Cardiff Metropolitan University is a new programme which is designed to provide a solid foundation for successful participants to develop or enhance their careers in HRM.

Why study the MSc in HRM? HR has evolved from a process driven, support function to one which is now strategically significant for all organisations. You will examine how HR can add value and help drive and sustain business and individual performance. You will critically explore the theoretical and practical implications of delivering Human Resource Management at a strategic and operational level in organisations. In this way, the latest business concepts and theories are applied to ‘real world’ settings. The programme modules involve participants engaging with the key debates and themes that reflect contemporary issues faced by organisations. They further critically examine the implications for HRM strategies and policies, line managers, employees and the HRM professional.

How will this programme help your career? The knowledge and skills gained from undertaking this programme provides a strong foundation for entry into, or enhancement of, a career in HRM. The MSc HRM is also a valuable qualification to equip students for other managerial and leadership roles in organisations which value strong people management.

Gaining professional CIPD membership alongside your Masters The full-time and part-time MSc is fully approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and you will be eligible for an ‘Associate’ membership of the CIPD when you have successfully completed the full Master’s programme.


Location Cardiff School of Management, Llandaff Campus.

Entry Requirements All students should hold a relevant first degree or equivalent, at Second class or above, that will need to be evidenced and verified and for which references will be sought. Whilst experience is not essential it is desirable.

Course Length 1 year full time (2-3 years part-time).

Students whose first language is other than English will need to provide evidence of fluency to at least IELTS 6.0or equivalent.

How is the programme structured? The MSc will be awarded on successful completion of 180 credits. The details of the modules, and the relevant credits, are as follows (full-time option shown):

Managing Change & Organisational Learning 20 credits

Semester 1

Contemporary Issues in HRM 20 credits

Recruiting and Retaining Employees 20 credits

Employee Relations 20 credits, or (Option) International HRM 20 credits Leading, Managing and Developing People 20 credits

Semester 2

The results for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 were outstanding for Cardiff Metropolitan University which was the highest ranking post-1992 institution, with 80% of the University's overall quality profile rated as 'world leading' (4*) or 'internationally excellent' (3*). For impact, the proportion rated as 3* or 4* was even better at 83%.
