Our Schools specialise in courses that are career orientated and have been designed in conjunction with business and industry. Cardiff Metropolitan University started life in 1865 with the formation of Cardiff's first School of Art and now, in 2015, we offer over 100 different degree programmes, across five academic schools and two campuses, with over 16,000 students. LLANDAFF CAMPUS

Cyncoed is home to the Cardiff School of Education and the Cardiff School of Sport. It is a busy campus that offers on-site accommodation and a purpose-built campus centre.

Llandaff is home to the Cardiff School of Art & Design, the Cardiff School of Health Sciences and the Cardiff School of Management.

The campus offers extensive sporting facilities, on-site shop, coffee bars and refectory. The campus also acts as the head office for the Students’ and Athletics’ Unions. ABOUT THE CITY As the Welsh capital, Cardiff boasts an excellent, year-round calendar of events and culture; from theatre, comedy and concerts to music, food festivals and major sporting events. Cardiff has an impressive civic centre with wonderful buildings, including the National Museum of Wales. A thriving city centre is surrounded by acres of parkland and offers a brand new shopping and entertainment centre, Victorian boutique shopping arcades, world-class sporting stadiums, and a lively cafe quarter, all of which stretch down to a stunning waterfront area with bars and restaurants at Cardiff Ba

SOCIAL SCENE Traditional student areas in Cardiff are Roath and Cathays - where there are plenty of pubs, cafes, bars and shops. Whether you’re looking to watch sport on a big screen with a cheap meal and a drink, or prefer cocktails in a trendy cafe with live music, this is an area that caters for every taste.

In the city centre, pubs and bars sit alongside superclubs, which all host weekly student nights and drinks offers. Mill Lane is popular for its stylish late-night bar and restaurant scene. For music lovers, Cardiff has a thriving scene and is home to the world’s oldest record store - Spillers. The Motorpoint Arena and Millennium Stadium host all the big-name tours, while smaller independent venues like Clwb Ifor Bach and the Students’ Union bars are home to more intimate music nights. The renowned Swn Festival takes place every October, promoting new music coming in and out of Wales. St David’s Hall in the city centre and the Glee Club in Cardiff Bay are both great venues for live comedy, and if film is your thing, Cardiff is home to four multiplex cinemas, a fantastic independent cinema with bar and cafe at the award-winning Chapter Arts Centre and more recently the city has become home to some fantastic open air and rooftop cinemas. SPORT

Whether tapas, fajitas, steak, sushi or a full Welsh breakfast is your thing, you won’t struggle to find something good to eat in Cardiff. From waterside dining in Cardiff Bay, to independent cafes and restaurants in Roath, Cathays and Pontcanna, Cardiff is a great, affordable city to enjoy eating out.

Cardiff is also home to an excellent selection of sporting events and activities, from football with Cardiff City FC and international cricket at the SWALEC Stadium, to international rugby at the famous Millennium Stadium. The Cardiff 10k and Cardiff Half Marathon are also popular for those who enjoy their running.

BEYOND THE CITY Cardiff has to be one of the UK’s best-placed cities for outdoor activities. With Wales’ coastline being named as ‘the greatest region on earth to visit in 2012’ by travellers’ bible Lonely Planet, Cardiff students can enjoy surfing, sailing or sunbathing at world-class beaches within an hour’s drive from the city. Inland, the Brecon Beacons is a stunning area for mountain biking, hiking or horse riding and is only a short distance from the city itself. Indoor climbing, white-water rafting and ice-skating are also possible in the city. 9

BY CAR The M4 motorway lies within easy reach of the city centre giving easy access to London and the south-east or, via the M5 to the Midlands, the south-west and the north.

BY TRAIN Rail travel is just as easy. A good rail network links Cardiff to all parts of Wales. There are fast, daily services to other major cities and London is only two hours away by Inter-City.

BY BUS/COACH The central bus station in Cardiff is currently being redeveloped. However, National Express bus services are currently departing and arriving from Sophia Gardens in the city centre (as of August 1st 2015). Please check your relevant bus service provider before embarking on your journey. Local services and the Met Rider connect to both campuses and other city centre locations.

BY AIR Cardiff International Airport is approximately twelve miles from the city centre. There are regular services to many British cities and to other European capitals.

CARDIFF MET RIDER The Cardiff Met Rider is the largest student bus service in Wales and offers transport between both campuses and all main student halls and private accommodation areas. It runs from Monday to Friday from 8am to 10pm throughout the academic year and allows students to travel safely through the city day and night.

Results of the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) (2014) rank Cardiff Met as the top post-1992 university in the UK, with 80% of the University's overall quality profile rated as 'world leading' (4*) or 'internationally excellent' (3*).


The University provides full-time and part-time opportunities to undertake research leading to the awards of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), as well as a recently validated taught Doctorate in Forensic Psychology (D. Foren. Psy.) accredited by the British Psychological Society. It also offers the opportunity to study part-time by conducting research in a professional context leading to one of a number of Professional Doctorate awards.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Candidates applying for the MPhil and PhD awards should normally have an upper second class honours (2:1) undergraduate degree or better from a recognised higher education institution or a postgraduate degree or a qualification deemed by the University to be equivalent to this level. It is usual for candidates to be enrolled onto an MPhil with the possibility of transfer to PhD (MPhil/PhD). Applicants with a relevant postgraduate degree may enrol straight onto a PhD. The usual entry requirement for a Professional Doctorate is 120 credits through taught modules from a recognised and appropriate postgraduate programme, or completion of a minimum of one year’s full-time equivalent supervised postgraduate work in the same academic discipline and/or subject field. Entry requirements for the taught Doctorate in Forensic Psychology are contingent on the existing qualifications and professional experience of each applicant, and will be subject to the University’s arrangements for the recognition of prior learning and experiential learning. (For further guidance, please see page 79).

PERIODS OF STUDY For an MPhil the period of study is usually between one and two years full-time or between two and five years part-time. For PhDs the period of study is usually between three and four years full-time, and between five and seven years part-time. Professional Doctorates would normally be completed in three to five years following completion of the Contextualising Professional Change and Development module. The period of candidature for the taught Doctorate in Forensic Psychology is determined by the profile of a candidate at the point of enrolment.

THE PROGRAMMES An MPhil is awarded for the production of a thesis (of up to 60,000 words or equivalent) which provides a critical evaluation and analysis of a body of knowledge or an original contribution to learning or knowledge. A PhD is awarded for the production of a thesis (of up to 100,000 words or equivalent) which provides evidence of a systematic study and constitutes an original contribution to learning. For the Professional Doctorate the programme is completed by the presentation of a thesis and a portfolio of supporting material embodying the methods and results of the research (of up to 60,000 words or equivalent). For the taught Doctorate in Forensic Psychology, the programme is completed by the presentation of a thesis (of up to 80,000 words or equivalent). For all awards the examination of the thesis includes a viva voce. The University provides all its research students with expert supervision and facilities relevant to their chosen area of research. Each research degree candidate has a supervisory team of two or three members of academic staff, one of whom acts as the candidate’s Director of Studies. 17

For each award there is also an opportunity to enrol for a Master of Professional Practice award.The Professional Doctorate programme comprises:  Taught modules of an advanced nature concerned with professionally-relevant knowledge;  Opportunities to apply knowledge further in the work place; and  A requirement for the creation of new professional knowledge. The Professional Doctorate is differentiated from a PhD because it is a professional qualification and incorporates a variety of forms of cohort-based and individualised learning appropriate to the very highest levels of achievement: didactic teaching, questioning and debate, enquiry based learning, guided study, negotiated study, and research. The taught Doctorate in Forensic Psychology is a flexible route towards application for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and Chartership with the British Psychological Society.

Graduates of the award will be forensic scientistpractitioners and will benefit from the collaborative partnerships between the University and, for example, the National Offender Management Service and Forensic Psychology Services Wales.

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION All applications are made online through the selfservice facility. See page 136 for further details. An application can be made at any time of year although applicants are advised to do so as early as possible prior to their intended commencement, particularly if they are seeking external sponsorship. Applications are considered by the relevant School or Unit in which the research project would be undertaken. The application process involves assessing the viability of the intended research project, identifying an appropriate supervisory team and following up references. As part of the application process applicants will be invited to attend an interview (either face-to-face or at a distance). This offers applicants an opportunity to discuss their proposed project with appropriate members of academic staff. If a conditional offer of admission is made, applicants will need to fulfil any requirements that are stipulated and provide relevant documentary evidence before enrolment can commence. In addition to formal research training, the University offers research students opportunities to develop their personal effectiveness through a range of on-line and workshop-based programmes. As these skills are so important in the workplace, students maintain a Professional Development Portfolio of their skills and training, and review their personal development plans regularly with their supervisory team. The University skills week, which currently runs the week before Easter, offers research students opportunities to acquire additional research, transferable and networking skills. For research students involved in the delivery of taught programmes, training in higher education pedagogy is also available.

Postgraduate study opportunities exist both at Master’s and PhD level. Master’s programmes offered include: Master of Fine Art, MA Art & Design, Master of Design, MA Ceramics and MSc Advanced Product Design. The School also offers specialist pathways for the MA Art & Design programme - please see page 33 for further information. Research degrees supervision is available for a wide range of topics and the School has a very good record of successful completions. This reflects the close supervision and the support its research students receive. This is particularly the case with international students, who receive very significant additional support from the University’s International office. In addition to the University’s training programme in generic research methods, the School provides specialist training in methods specific to the discipline e.g. art and design practice, reinforced during students’ regular supervisory tutorials.

Much of CSAD’s research is conducted through the Wales Institute for Research in Art and Design (WIRAD), a collaborative venture founded by Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of South Wales, University of Wales Trinity St. David, National Museum Wales, and the National Library of Wales. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the Art and Design panel rated 97% of WIRAD’s research submission as international standard, with 75% rated as either ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’.

Many students have successfully secured grants or awards covering tuition fees and maintenance for their research degree studies, most notably from Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC), where the School has worked very closely with candidates on their application. Kate Haywood Artist Kate Haywood has exhibited her work as far afield as China, Italy and Slovenia, as well as holding residencies and professional roles in London and Yorkshire, before relocating to Cardiff to begin an MA in Ceramics at the Cardiff School of Art and Design (CSAD). Kate moved to Cardiff based on the strength of recommendation of the MA course from other artists in her field, as well as CSAD’s impressive and prestigious alumni. Speaking about the appeal of the course, Kate said: “As well as its highly regarded reputation, the main appeal of the course was the absence of any particular in-house style, which many of the MA courses adopt. My work isn’t easily categorised and so it was important to select an MA Programme which would be support this aspect of my practice and the diversity of the course’s successful and prominent alumni are testament to this approach.” A graduate of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, where she studied BA (Hons) Jewellery Design and Camberwell College of Arts,

where she graduated with a BA (Hons) in Ceramics, Kate had held a number of posts as an Artist in Residence in Yorkshire and as a Ceramics Technician in London before enrolling on the MA in Ceramics at Cardiff Met. In 2009, she was awarded the coveted Gold Medal in memory of Eleuterio Ignazi, in the International Competition of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Italy. Her work, which is primarily concerned with aspects of ritual, body and place and uses textiles and metal alongside ceramics to create arrangements of works, often referencing objects of adornment and ceremony which Kate describes as a ‘visual haiku' - has been exhibited at a number of national and international conferences and biannual events. During her MA at Cardiff Met, for which she was awarded a Fenton Arts Trust Scholarship, Kate developed her work further, exploring ways in which poetic structures function visually by balancing and manipulating material qualities and connotations and creating a space for viewers to enter into a dialogue with her pieces.

MA helps artist Kate develop a deeper understanding of her work in ceramics Kate said: “As well as being encouraged to question my own practice at a deeper level, the course offered fantastic professional support, not only from internationally recognised lecturers like Pete Castle and Claire Curneen, but also from the ceramic department’s excellent technical staff who helped me to develop my material knowledge and processes.” Kate’s career in ceramics has continued apace since graduating, securing a competitive graduate residency place at the established Fireworks Clay Studios in Cardiff, which celebrates its 21st anniversary in 2016. Following her year-long residency there, Kate will take up a further yearlong residency with the CSAD graduate Incubation Space, which helps to prepare graduates for professional practice via business support and mentoring. Kate is also due to exhibit in Craft in the Bay in Cardiff from 2016 onwards and has been nominated for a number of bursaries and awards. She hopes to continue to be based in Cardiff and travel to Japan and Scandinavia with her work in the future.

Dr Wendy Keay-Bright A passion for animation and experimentation, ignited as a young graphic design student, has remained with Dr Wendy Keay-Bright throughout a wide-ranging career in design and academia. Her first job after graduation was as a designer on the much-loved children’s TV series, SuperTed, where she gained experience and kick-started an early dual career in film and education. After curating an exhibition about the animation, Wendy was approached to lecture part-time at what was then Newport Film School. At the same time, Wendy was also asked to join HTV to work as an animation artist, leading Wendy to set up an animation production company, Scratch Films alongside her teaching role.

Throughout her career, Wendy has retained and developed a passionate interest in inclusive design, studying for a PhD qualification in the subject alongside her teaching. Much of Dr Keay-Bright’s work in the area of inclusive design have been practice-led, action research projects undertaken with children who have autism spectrum conditions, including the development of commercially successful software resources and apps. Alongside her academic work as Reader in Inclusive Design at Cardiff Met, Wendy is also Director of the Centre for Applied Research in Inclusive Arts and Design (CARIAD), at Cardiff Met. Drawing on inclusivity, CARIAD is a multidisciplinary centre, bringing the disciplines of the arts, sport and psychology together to work on applied research projects with stakeholder partners. In 2012 she formed a design consultancy with partners Joel Gethin Lewis, Pete Hellicar and Marek Bereza, who represent some of the most talented interaction designers in the UK.

Inclusive design at the heart of Dr Wendy Keay-Bright’s work Speaking about her varied and fulfilling career in design, Wendy said: “I began experimenting as a student and I still employ the same outlook today, embracing and using technology as a playful medium for expressive communication and creativity. “Design is not static and the landscape is always progressing around technological change. My attitude to research and inclusive design is very organic and naturally progressive - for example, we began projects working with children with autism in schools in 2000, these pupils are now in their 20s, their needs are different and we are now working with them as adults.” Wendy’s current research focuses on inviting people to experience spaces together through large-scale camera projections, to amplify the interests and abilities of the most hard to engage young people and older adults in outreach and community settings. Dr Keay-Bright is also Principal Investigator of the ‘SOMATOPIA Raspberry Pi Foundation’ project, pioneering the use of the RaspberryPi computer as a creative platform for inclusive, experimental artworks.

Dr Andrew Whall A lifelong love of climbing and a career as an artist fused together to form the subject of Andrew Whall’s PhD at Cardiff Met. Having originally studied for a BA and then a Master’s in Fine Art at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, Andrew then went on to forge a career as an artist and curator in Cornwall, where he founded Art Surgery, an organisation which initiates artists’ projects, often with collaborating organisations, to be presented in locations beyond the gallery walls. Art Surgery’s activities include a wide variety of curating, commissioning and project work with a diverse range of artists including collaborations with over 100 hundred artists, many well-established practitioners. Andrew’s projects and exhibitions included collaborations with the Tate Gallery in St Ives, including Art Now Cornwall - the first exhibition at Tate St Ives to present a large sample of artists living and working in Cornwall, featuring recent and new work of 28 of the county’s most influential artists.

Speaking about his career highlights, Andrew said: “I’ve worked outside of the studio context in a number of ways including site specific performance at Antifest 09 in Kuopio, Finland. I’ve run numerous performance practice workshops, and from 2007 to 2013 I was a Co-Director of ‘ALIAS’. I commissioned and worked with over 150 artists and artist groups, including Andre Stitt, Bobby Baker, Alastair Maclennan, French Mottershead and Roland Miller to name a few.” Andrew has also taught modules in drawing and performance at Leamington Spa Foundation, Coventry University as well as leading some drawing workshops during his time at Cardiff Metropolitan University. He is also a Director at the CAZ Centre, a not-for-profit artist-led space, project and network based in Penzance, providing artists and their national and international peers access to a creative hub offering opportunities to exhibit, dialogue, collaborate, network and engage critically. Alongside his work as an artist, Andrew has been a prolific and passionate climber since a very young age, and is proficient in bouldering; a form of rock

A love of climbing and art fused to form a new practice climbing that is performed without the use of ropes or harnesses. Andrew said: “I began to develop a practice combing my roles as both an artist and a climber, although I didn’t want it to be a literal representation. Much of my own artwork is performance based, and I began to see bouldering as a performative element of my art, incorporating theories like ‘new geography’. I’d always seen bouldering as a creative activity and a vehicle to experience landscape and as I began to develop a practice, I felt it needed a rigour attached to it, so I began to look into potential university study to help bring a good framework to my practice. “I chose to return to Cardiff Met and the Cardiff School of Art and Design because I already had a professional relationship with my tutor there through my work as a curator and it felt like an appropriate place to do it.” Alongside bouldering coaching, Andrew now offers workshops in ‘Bouldering Phenomenology and Landscape’, which take place amongst the unique granite formations found on the moorland tors of West Penwith.

CoUrSe overview The MA Art & Design programme will align with specific research and experimental practice pathways, led by academic staff with established practice careers and/or advanced scholarship and research. The MA is taught through lecture and seminars with individualised supervisory meetings to develop a learning contract (part of the early Professional Development Planning (PDP) process), an individualised programme of learning and individualised supervision towards a creative research outcome, defined and monitored by robust PDP. The programme will cater for students who wish to develop their academic and research knowledge from within the practical disciplines and wider academic fields of fine art and design. Typically this might include teachers, aspiring artists or designers, aspiring academics, or recent graduates in fine art or design who wish to further their professional practice. SpeCiAliSt pAthwAYS Art History through Practice This pathway is ideal preparation for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the art world. The teaching centres on the world-class collection in the National Gallery of Wales in Cardiff, which includes major works by Poussin, Claude, Gainsborough, Cezanne, Monet, Van Gogh and Rodin amongst others. Lectures and seminars will be supported by the first hand examination of particular works in the Gallery. The pathway is assessed partly through writing and partly through practice: there will be an opportunity for students to realise a curatorial intervention within the museum or to participate in its voluntary work scheme. Some familiarity with art history is desirable but not essential.

Art, Science & Technology This pathway offers philosophical study of the relationship between art, science and technology, and studio exploration of how scientific knowledge and various technologies can be applied in interdisciplinary art practice. It is intended for art and design graduates who wish to develop their work in dialogue with science or technology, and for science graduates who wish to explore how art and design theory and practice can inform our understanding of science and technology. It is also intended for graduates from any background who wish to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of the nature of interdisciplinarity. Most importantly, it is designed for graduates who want to wrestle with the practical and philosophical issues that arise when subjects collide, and arrive at an understanding of what it means to fall in between.

Death & Visual Culture This pathway will analyse representations of death and dying through an investigation of theoretical concepts and debates applied to all aspects of visual culture, including fine art, film, fashion, material culture, photography, television and gaming. Students will be encouraged to analyse case studies in relation to sociological, psychoanalytic and philosophical theoretical disciplines on death.

Design Futures This is a call to arms for designers who dream. We are looking for visionary and imaginative graduates from any discipline who are seriously committed to thinking about the future. Ecologies This pathway takes ‘ecology’ in its widest, philosophical sense to mean the study of connection and interrelationship. It is intended for art and design graduates who wish to develop the ecological dimension of their practice, and for humanities or science graduates who are interested in how ecology and visual practice can inform one another. It is a research-preparation Master’s programme that can be taken either as a theory–practice or a purely theoretical route, and is taught in conjunction with the Philosophy pathway.

Philosophy This pathway is intended for artists and designers who want to rethink their practice from a philosophical perspective, or for anyone with an interest in the demands that creating and thinking make upon one other. The pathway explores the interaction between philosophy and art and design, including how art and design inform philosophy as a practice. CoUrSe overview This Postgraduate Certificate in Research Skills is a single 60-credit module (Research Skills), which will be studied by all PhD students and also as an option by MA Art & Design students. Most of our educational research is firmly grounded in the relationship between theory and practice and knowledge transfer, while the philosophy of research in humanities is connected with the exploration of specific genres within the field of English Literature.

The School has a longstanding tradition of providing high quality ITET programmes at postgraduate level. The PGCE Primary and PGCE Secondary programmes make a significant contribution to shaping the next generation of primary and secondary teachers across Wales, within the UK and worldwide. CSE is recognised as being amongst the largest centres of teacher education and training in the UK and produces around 450 newly qualified teachers each year. Staff are enthusiastic and dedicated to creating rich and diverse learning opportunities within the School’s ITET programmes.

Staff within the School have a wide range of research interests. As well as staff with established research profiles, a significant proportion of our lecturers are undertaking higher degrees and developing additional research interests to contribute to the School's portfolio. We also have interdisciplinary research links with Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Schools of: Sport; Art & Design; and Health Sciences. The School's research and postgraduate supervision takes place within our two research groups:  Pedagogy and Andragogy Research Group (PARG)  Arts and Humanities Research Group (AHRG). Sarah Dauncey Qualifying as a nursery nurse with a BTEC National Diploma in 2009 has led to hopes of a prolific academic career in education for Cardiff Met PhD student Sarah Dauncey. Following her initial studies, Sarah obtained a first class honours degree in Education and Early Childhood Studies from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2012, where an undergraduate dissertation led to an interest in examining primary school teachers’ attitudes to risk in their work. Sarah said: “I spent some time during my final year of my degree course in an outdoor environment learning setting, which led to my interest in practitioners’ perception of the Forest School education system, particularly in the Foundation Phase in Wales.

“My interest in researching this area in more depth grew and grew, so I spoke to my lecturers about the possibility of going down the PhD route after graduation. I was able to study for an MPhil/PhD Transfer, where I spent time reading and gathering literature on my proposed area of research before beginning a PhD.” Sarah is now a third year PhD student, specifically examining how year one primary school teachers define risk; what influences their perceptions of risk and analysing the impact that their perceptions have on their practice. Since beginning her studies, Sarah has been awarded a scholarship by Santander to collect data for her PhD study in Germany as well as Wales, and to enable her to gain a wider and broader perspective of different teachers.

Dr Kate North Dr Kate North developed a unique combination of experience before becoming a lecturer in creative writing with specialist interests in fiction and poetry. While writing her novel and studying for her PhD she also worked as a writer in a variety of community settings. Originally from Cardiff, Kate studied for an English degree at Aberystwyth University, followed by an MA in Creative Writing, specialising in Poetry, at the University of East Anglia. Kate then took on a number of different roles as a community writer for various organisations such as a women’s prison where she ran writing workshops and a literacy project. She delivered writing workshops for high profile charities such as Age UK and for bodies like the NHS. Throughout this time Kate also worked as a visiting lecturer for University of York’s Centre for Lifelong Learning and York St John University.

While living and working in Yorkshire, Kate was studying for her PhD in Creative Writing in a distance capacity with Cardiff University. Her first novel, Eva Shell, written as her PhD research project was published in 2008, a year after her doctoral graduation. Her first full-time lecturing role was at the University of Gloucestershire, and she joined Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2010, where she is now Programme Director for MA courses in English Literature and Creative Writing. Kate specialises in both poetry and fiction and her poetry collection, Bistro was published in 2012.

Novelist, poet, researcher and community writer, Kate brings unique expertise to Cardiff Metropolitan University Kate is particularly interested in applications of writing practice in scientific and healthcare settings. Speaking about her current role, Kate said: “As a practising writer of fiction and poetry who teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, I am also very interested in applications of writing practice and related theoretical discourses.”

Kate has also continued her interest in community writing, as co-investigator on a pilot study exploring care for children with autism in Wales in 2014, as well a co-running a project of creative writing workshops to enable new mothers to explore concepts of mothering.

Lauren Knight After just one term in a placement school, PGCE student Lauren Knight was offered a role as a teacher of science and maths in a secondary school. Lauren had spent two years working as a lab technician at a Cardiff school before deciding to train as a teacher through a postgraduate qualification. She chose the PGCE Secondary course at the Cardiff School of Education because of its unique course structure. Lauren said: “The way the PGCE year at Cardiff Met was organised appealed to me, with one day in university every week followed by days in a placement school. “I felt that regular university contact would be a really important part of the course and it was really useful to have a weekly opportunity to ‘debrief’ and get some insight and support from my tutors and my peers on the course.”

Students on the PGCE Secondary course at Cardiff Met spend time on three placements, one week in a primary school at the beginning of term, and two long term placements at different secondary schools. Lauren’s first placement was within the science department at Oakdale Comprehensive School near Blackwood. A permanent position within the department became available and Lauren was interviewed and offered the job on completion of her PGCE qualification. Her next placement was at Bassleg School near Newport, where Lauren gained further teaching experience. Speaking about her choice to teach as a career, Lauren, who studied originally studied biochemistry at Swansea University said: “I enjoyed my time as a lab technician in a school and it really affirmed my desire to teach as my long-term career when I was given the chance to help teach some of the practical A-level courses there.

We had plenty of personal development sessions and although I had already secured a position early on in the year, we were offered lots of help with preparing for interviews and providing references. “I think the PGCE year has given me a really good grounding and I’m well prepared to start my new role with Oakdale School, although there will lots more to learn along the way, I’m really excited to be starting my career in teaching”. CoUrSe overvieW The PGCE Primary programme is taught from one of the largest centres of teacher training in Wales and the UK. It has been designed to provide students with a variety of challenging experiences with a continuum of school and university work, in order to prepare students to become primary teachers and to enable them to meet the standards for Qualified Teacher Status. Students can opt to follow either the Foundation Phase route (3-8 years) or Key Stage 2 route (7-11 years). The School-based component is undertaken in our excellent range of partnership schools and is an integral part of the programme. Students will spend a total of 120 days in school, which is predominantly arranged on a 4:1 split. The University-based sessions include either experience in the ‘Areas of Learning’ outlined in the Foundation Phase or the subjects outlined in the National Curriculum orders. All university-based modules are studied at Master's level, allowing 60 credits to be achieved. The Centre has an international reputation for consumer food safety behaviour, food and health relationships. Much of the research in this area is food industry focused and the results obtained change practices in the manufacturing industry as well as inform government policy. PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH

Our key areas of research activity are centred on three areas:

Research in this area focuses on questions that will make a real difference to peoples’ everyday lives: psychological benefits of outdoor leisure activities, student engagement in higher education, disordered eating, food safety behaviour, addiction, psychiatric decision making, interventions for offenders, and human evolution. The Department of Biomedical Sciences hosts more than 600 students across six programmes and comprises 25 members of academic staff, plus technical/administrative staff. The MSc Biomedical Science programme (which is professionally accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science) aims to provide a high quality and professionally relevant postgraduate programme focusing on the relationship of theoretical knowledge to the practice of Biomedical Sciences.

One of our key objectives is the training of our PhD students and post-doctoral fellows. Undertaking a research degree isn’t just about the research topic itself - it requires a whole range of other transferable skills. Our research students are well supported by technical and administrative staff, as well as by academic staff. We are a multidisciplinary School and provide a supportive and stimulating environment for taught postgraduate and research students.

Dr Lee Butcher Professional research scientist Lee Butcher first joined Cardiff Met as a BSc (Hons) undergraduate in Health, Exercise and Sport in September 2002 and has progressed his academic and professional career within the university ever since - to an internationally recognised standard. Lee found the combination of the university’s world-class sporting facilities and the expertise and support of teaching staff within the Cardiff School of Health Sciences helped shape the success of his undergraduate project, which looked at the idea that low intensity exercise benefits the lipid metabolisms of previously sedentary individuals, and ultimately formed the basis for his internally funded PhD which he began in 2005. Speaking about his research career at Cardiff Met, Lee said: “The support, passion and enthusiasm that I received from my Director of Studies, Professor Keith Morris throughout my PhD allowed me to develop not only professionally but personally.

“The development from undergraduate to postgraduate would only have been possible due to the support and expertise from within the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) at Cardiff Met, including the dedicated team of technicians who throughout my time at Cardiff Met have provided exceptional support and technical knowledge. “The internal postgraduate environment was first-class as there were a number of fellow PhD researchers working in other BMS related areas and the support we received from each other and from within the University as a whole was excellent.” Since completing his PhD in early 2009, Lee has worked on several research projects under the guidance of Professor Jorge Erusalimsky in the Cellular Senescence and Vascular Biology research group at Cardiff Met. The first was a collaborative project looking at the socioeconomic and psychosocial factors that affect biological ageing in a large cohort of civil servants.

Cardiff Met takes Lee from BSc student to internationally recognised research scientist After working as a lead postdoctoral researcher on a pharmaceutical industry funded project, Lee is now part of a large collaborative European Commission 7th framework funded project looking at the biological factors that underlie the progression of frailty into disability in a large study group. The project has a number of years still to run, after which Lee hopes to get further funding within his areas of expertise or go on to an academic post within the biomedical sciences discipline. Lee said: “I feel that the diverse range of skills I’ve gained during my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Cardiff Met will hold me in good stead for a future in academia.”

Dr Caroline Limbert Prestigious roles with worldclass hospitals, universities and research groups helped Caroline Limbert carve out a prominent academic career in what was then the emerging field of health psychology. After leaving school and originally training as a hairdresser, Caroline married and had children. While her children were young she decided to return to education and follow up an interest in psychology and child development, enrolling on a degree course in Psychology at Oxford Brookes University. Caroline flourished on the degree course and went on to study for a PhD at Oxford Brookes. During her studies she was simultaneously employed by the University of Oxford in Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education (PGMDE) for three years. After graduating with a doctoral qualification, Caroline went on to join the Psychology and Genetics Research Group at Guy’s Hospital London.

Then, after two years in London, Caroline decided to move back to Oxford and began a post lecturing in Psychology at Oxford Brookes University, during which time her work included a nine week long research project in the Falkland Islands, looking at stress amongst military personnel. This was then followed by a research post at the University of Oxford, once again in the PGMDE department. Caroline joined Cardiff Met in 2005 where she helped to set up the University’s MSc in Health Psychology at the Cardiff School of Health Sciences as Programme Director. Speaking about her variety of research interests, which include eating related behaviours, eating disorders, stress and wellbeing in the workplace and psychometric testing, Caroline said: “My interest in health and wellbeing in the workplace comes from my fairly unique background as both a Health Psychologist and an Occupational Psychologist.

Cardiff Met’s Dr Caroline Limbert is leading the way in health psychology and research “My research interests are now very broad, primarily because the MSc students’ dissertations are placement-based, so I can be involved in anything from pharmacy and medication to exercise, outdoor activity or chronic disease alongside my own academic projects. “My work with the British Psychological Society (BPS) Health Psychology Training Committee also helps add an extra dimension to my lecturing role; I’m a supervisor and assessor for health psychologist trainees at stage 2 level, so I can give MSc students insight into that next level of their work and training. “Similarly, I am currently working with the BPS to accredit one of our franchised courses in Athens, which would be a first for the BPS overseas and six Cardiff MSc students will be travelling to Greece for an eight day long research trip as part of our links there.”

Karolina Burchill – Jankiewicz Cardiff Met’s unique links with the food industry helped MSc graduate Karolina BurchillJankiewicz to launch an exciting and innovative career developing new food products. Karolina enrolled on the Food Science and Technology MSc at the Cardiff School of Health Sciences at Cardiff Met after originally graduating in Poland with a degree in Food Engineering and Management. Speaking about her studies, Karolina said “A career in the food industry has always interested me - I’m fascinated by the processes and strategies around food management as well as the development of products and the science behind it. “I chose Cardiff Met for postgraduate study because of its food industry centre and development kitchens, which offer unique facilities for practice. My original degree was very focussed on theory so I was keen to continue my studies with more opportunity for practical work and assessment.

During my time at Cardiff Met I was able to really see how things work, visit different factories and take part in small trials.” During her one-year MSc, Karolina was also impressed with the strength of Cardiff Met’s industry links, built through the Knowledge Innovation Technology Exchange (KITE) Programme and the Zero2Five Food Industry Centre. Funded by the EU and Welsh Government, KITE helps link students on the MSc course with employers in the food industry for mutual benefit and sharing of expertise. After graduating from Cardiff Met, Karolina worked for a food manufacturer in Hitchin for 18 months as a Process Development Trainee, before returning to Wales to work for Abergavenny Fine Foods in a technical role. She is currently New Product Development Manager at Clarks Maple Syrup. The Newport-based company is the leading producer and supplier of maple syrup in the UK.

Dietetics The Dietetics pathway is intended to support and promote continuing professional development of dietitians and their practice. As such, it will help meet the needs of those wishing to progress and evidence their ability to work at advanced practitioner level in the NHS. Housing The Housing pathway focuses on the core learning outcomes, which set the foundations for all members to achieve Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Chartered Membership (CM). The CIH have set a benchmark for Chartered Membership which demonstrates that a Chartered member not only has relevant and up to date knowledge but can use this by applying a range of appropriate skills and behaviours in a professional manner. This includes working to the CIH code of professional ethics.


Public Health Emergencies The School has worked with the WHO-Collaborating Centre (Centre for Radiation, Chemicals and Environmental Hazards, Public Health England) to develop teaching and training materials on The Public Health Management of Major Incidents, Disasters and Events. The pathway is aimed at policy makers, public and environmental-health professionals, together with clinicians and physicians. This course will provide a contemporary, bespoke and unique approaches to major incident management, drawing upon a number of presentations, case studies, scenarios and international guidance. Speech & Language Therapy The Speech and Language pathway is intended to support and promote continuing professional development of speech and language therapists and their practice. As such, it will help meet the needs of those wishing to progress and evidence their ability to work at advanced practitioner level in the NHS. Sport & Exercise Nutrition (SEN) There is a demand for this pathway from dietitians, nutritionists and those with a sport and exercise science background. CoUrSe oVerVieW The programme offers specialist training, building on an initial qualification in dental technology. There are no required attendances to Cardiff Metropolitan University for this programme as it is delivered via distance learning. As such, it is necessary for you to access video conferencing over a PC with a broadband connection. There will be weekly meetings within each module. You will be expected to carry out at least six hours of practical work per week in your laboratory/workplace throughout the academic year. Completion of 60 credits at each stage is required. At Certificate and Diploma levels, you will study modules from a selected specialist area, which may include fixed prosthodontics (conservation), removable prosthodontics (dentures) and orthodontics. For example, module titles include: complex complete and partial dentures, precision attachments, implants, fixed and myofunctional orthodontic appliances. There are several work based learning modules involving case studies, personal and portfolio development. Research modules are also available preparing candidates for the Master’s if required. At this level a research project and preparation of a publishable article must be undertaken. The research topic is agreed in conjunction with your allocated supervisor.

eMployABility & CAreerS The qualifications allow application for the post of Senior Dental Technician and above within the health service (at MT0 3/A4C Band 6 or higher). An MSc in Forensic Psychology is the first step (stage one) in gaining chartered psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and registered practitioner status with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). The MSc in Forensic Psychology will provide the knowledge base and applied research skills that will provide the foundation for stage two of the chartered process that requires a minimum of two years of full-time supervised practice with an appropriate client group.


CoUrSe oVerVieW This programme is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and, upon completion, will provide you with eligibility to apply to the register to practice as a forensic psychologist in the UK. The programme is designed to be placement based, where you will undertake various workshops, as well as clinical and academic supervision. Workshops are usually delivered in block teaching sessions and you are expected to be in Cardiff for around 15 days over the course of your study. You will be allocated both a clinical supervisor and an academic supervisor. At least one of these supervisors will be an appropriately qualified and experienced forensic psychologist. Before starting the programme, you will be required to have an approved placement where appropriate supervised experience is offered by the placement site. We support students to find suitable placement opportunities, but for students where their placement provider does not employ them, will be expected to take out appropriate liability insurance at their own cost. The programme is suitable for students with a varied background in research methods. There is a choice of two research methods modules, one for those with little or no background experience of research and one for people who already have some experience of research, perhaps at undergraduate level. Dr Agnieszka Rydzik With two degrees, a PhD, prestigious awards for her research and having her work published in international journals, Dr. Agnieszka Rydzik has launched a successful academic career in tourism. After completing degrees at the University of Warsaw and the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), Agnieszka was awarded a Vice-Chancellor Doctoral Award to study for a PhD at Cardiff Metropolitan University. She enrolled at the University in 2009 and began her research at the Welsh Centre for Tourism Research under the supervision of Professors Annette Pritchard and Nigel Morgan as well as Dr Diane Sedgley. In her PhD, she explored the employment experiences, trajectories and identities of Central and Eastern European female migrants working in the UK tourism industry.

Agnieszka used visual and participatory methodologies for her research. This innovative study resulted in two exhibitions showcasing artworks created by migrant women, one at the West Bristol Arts Trail and the other at the IV International Critical Tourism Studies Conference. Her work was praised by her peers for her innovative research methodology and in 2011 she was awarded the Annals of Tourism Research Prize for Outstanding Doctoral Paper. During her time at Cardiff Met, Agnieszka also delivered a number of guest lectures and gave presentations at international conferences.

Cardiff Met supports Agnieszka’s award-winning research Recalling her time at Cardiff Met, Agnieszka said: “I was privileged to have leading scholars in the field as my supervisors. In 2014, she completed her doctorate and was awarded PhD Student of the Year Award by the Institute of Travel and Tourism. Dr Peng Zhou (Joe) Dr Peng Zhou (Joe) has gained a vast amount of experience consulting governments and businesses and has conducted a wealth of research that has helped him gain recognition in the economic and finance industry, helping to cement his academic career. Before joining Cardiff Met as a Lecturer, Joe gained a first class honours degree in Philosophy at Peking University then went on to study for an MSc in Economics and Finance at York University. He started his career at a consulting company providing legal and financial advice for governments and companies in infrastructure projects, including power and water plants, sewage treatment works, highways and underground transport systems. In 2007, Joe left the company to pursue his PhD in Economics at Cardiff University. His PhD focused on dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE), macroeconomic modelling and applied microeconomics.

His work was well received and published in several specialised books and peer-reviewed journals, including Scottish Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Evolutionary Economics and International Review of Entrepreneurship. After completing his PhD in 2012, Joe joined Cardiff Met as Lecturer in Economics and Finance. Since joining the University, Joe has pioneered the use of games as a form of teaching economic principles and is publishing a paper on ‘Nonlinear Teaching Approaches’ which he has developed at Cardiff Met. Speaking about his time at Cardiff Met, Joe said: “After coming from a traditional academic background where theoretical work was more prominent, it was refreshing to come to Cardiff Met and teach with a more practical approach. “As a lecturer, I have to interpret theory in a practical way to the students, which can be a challenge but I have really enjoyed it. This type of learning helps motivate the students and activates their initiative and engagement.

Innovative Cardiff Met teaching methods are a refreshing change for Dr Peng Zhou They will be able to take the skills they have learnt through these practical methods and transfer them into working skills when they start their careers. “I also developed a nonlinear teaching approach. The traditional approach covers a lecture’s content in a linear fashion which can be inefficient, as learning is naturally full of repetition. By taking a nonlinear approach, I can teach from general to specific and from intuition to precision. This makes the teaching process fit the learning nature.” Alongside his academic career, Joe continues to conduct research projects and advise both the UK and Welsh governments, as well as global companies. He recently worked with Shelter Cymru for a Welsh Government research grant for economic evaluation of independent living adaptions, and prior to this he worked with insurance comparison website, Confused.com.

Edita Gondzic After gaining a distinction in MSc Information and Communication Technology Management at the Cardiff School of Management, Edita Gondzic secured a place on a prestigious graduate scheme at ‘big four’ company, KPMG. Edita completed her first degree at the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina and applied for an international scholarship through the European Commission as part of the Erasmus Mundus scheme. She was accepted at two universities in Italy and Amsterdam, but decided on Cardiff Met and enrolled in October 2013. Speaking about her choice, Edita said: “After doing some research I decided to choose the Cardiff School of Management course because it was better-rounded and the quality of the teaching was of a higher standard. The lecturers who were part of the course were experts in their fields and I felt I could learn a lot from them.

“As an international student it was daunting to start at a place that was unfamiliar, but Cardiff Metropolitan was very welcoming, which helped ease me in. Everyone was friendly and helpful.” Having enjoyed her course, Edita met with careers advisors at Cardiff Met and discussed opportunities after her course. She then found the graduate scheme at KPMG and applied after submitting her thesis. Edita secured a position on KPMG’s elite graduate scheme, where there were 32,000 applicants for just 200 places, and attributes part of her success to her Cardiff Met course. She said: “The course prepared me for both the application process and my career. The modules are planned out to help you think in the right way and I was able apply the knowledge I gained at university throughout the several stages of the application process. I have often come across subjects I studied on my course throughout my career, such as end user computing risk management which I have found very relevant and applicable.”

There is a good balance between theoretical and practical learning on the course and this has helped me transition easily between my academic studies and professional career.” Edita’s MSc project is a prime example of Cardiff Met’s practical and theoretical learning. Having enjoyed the Business Analysis module, Edita worked with the Learning and Teaching Development Unit and three other academic Schools to review the transition to the ‘Moodle’ online learning platform. She saw potential in the new system and worked closely with the Schools to help them understand the transition as well as the benefits of Moodle.

The joint submission made by the Cardiff School of Sport and the School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences at Bangor University was ranked 7th out of 51 submissions both on research power and research quality by the Times Higher Education. The School has well-established research groups in Performance Analysis, Physiology and Health, Sociology and Philosophy of Sport, Sport and Exercise Psychology, Sport Biomechanics, Sport Coaching and Pedagogy, Sport Development and Management and Sports Injury. There are over 50 research degree projects currently being supervised.

The Cardiff School of Sport offers 11 specialist programmes, and is one of the UK’s largest providers of sport-related postgraduate studies. Mike Stembridge Physiology technician and PhD research student Mike Stembridge has developed an exciting and progressive academic career over a number of years at Cardiff Metropolitan University, with research expeditions taking him as far afield as Canada and the Himalayas. Mike’s research is centred on the short-term and life-long effects of hypoxic (low levels of oxygen) exposure, with a focus on how the cardiovascular system adapts to high altitude in both acclimatising lowlanders and native high altitude populations, and establishing the mechanisms underpinning such differences. A recent research expedition took place at The Pyramid Research Laboratory (near Mount Everest base camp) where he examined cardiac function in Himalayan Sherpa, an ethnic group of people in Nepal, using new echocardiographic imaging techniques to monitor heart function both at rest and during exercise above 5,000m.

Mike originally began his academic career with a BSc Science in Health, Exercise and Sport at the Cardiff School of Health Sciences, followed by an MSc Sport and Exercise Science, also at Cardiff Met. Mike studied for his MSc part-time, while also working in applied sports science with professional sports teams including Watford Football Club and the Leicester Tigers Rugby Club. He then took up a post at Cardiff Met in the Cardiff School of Sport working as a Sport Science Support Officer on the University’s high profile FIFA project, which investigated the effect of playing surface on fatigue during a simulated soccer match. During this time, Mike became interested in pursuing a PhD while working with Professor Rob Shave in the cardiovascular research group within the physiology and health discipline. Mike was offered the opportunity to join a high altitude expedition in collaboration with colleagues at University of British Columbia and since then has continued to specialise in this area and develop his own areas of research.

Mike’s research takes on new heights at Cardiff Met Speaking about his time at Cardiff Met, Mike said: “I have been inspired and encouraged by Professor Rob Shave and his work looking at the acute and chronic impact of exercise upon the heart in both health and disease. During my PhD I’ve also had the chance to establish and nurture collaborations with external partners, including the Welsh Heart Research Institute and the Centre for Heart, Lung and Vascular Research at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan. Mike’s latest expeditions have also taken him to the White Mountains in California where he investigated some of the mechanisms underpinning lowlander adaptation to high altitudes, as well as a return to Nepal for further research into how the Sherpa have successfully adapted to life in such an extreme environment. He now hopes to continue his research at Cardiff Met with a post-doctoral research fellowship within the Cardiff School of Sport.

Jo Coombs A stellar career in Welsh gymnastics led to Jo Coombs being named coach of the year at the Welsh Sports Personality of the Year 2014, after she guided the Welsh rhythmic gymnastics team to bring home an unprecedented eight medals from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Alongside her sporting success Jo has also had a successful management career, switching from teaching to a role as a local authority sport coordinator in 2000. Jo, who specialises in rhythmic gymnastics, went on to become National Development Manager with Welsh Gymnastics in 2004 and then Head of Performance in 2010. It was during this stage in her career that she was encouraged to look at the MA in Sport Management and Leadership at Cardiff Met, as part of her continued professional development.

Speaking about enrolling on the MA, Jo said: “I was already working in a sports management role, but I wanted to back that experience up with a professional qualification and learn more about the field as a whole. It was during the run-up to London 2012 so it was a great time to be working and collaborating with others in similar roles. “There were lots of opportunities to speak with other professionals and discuss best practice in that way. “The course was part-time so I was able to implement and utilise what I was learning in lecturers into a practical setting straight away. Although I was initially a bit nervous about going back into academia after such a long break, I soon gained confidence and the course was a great mix of assignments and practical work-based learning and study.

The role maintains eight disciplines and covers everything performance related including coaching, judging, competitions and squads. The short term focus is preparation for 2018 Commonwealth Games and improving our places on to the GB pathway for representation at European and World level. Long term, we are continuing to improve on our performance structures and development of talent to make the performance team world class.”

Lucy Holmes Lucy Holmes has a unique position as director of one of the first postgraduate degrees in performance analysis in the world. The Centre of Performance Analysis at Cardiff School of Sport has a leading international reputation and the MSc in Performance Analysis offers students a combination of theoretical ideas, practical experience and exposure to new technology; preparing skilled and experienced analysts with sound scientific principles on which to base their work. Programme Director for the MSc since 2012, Lucy’s passion for the discipline was developed over a number of years studying both academically and in situ with sports teams, as well as working technically in the subject.

My colleague Paul - head of the Service Design team at PDR alerted me to an opportunity to go to Beijing at Tsinghua University after he had run a series of workshops in China. This happened the same day of the deadline of the Santander scholarships. I thought it could be a great opportunity for me as a PhD researcher to experience a completely different context with other people studying the same subject. I sent the application describing the activities I would be involved in and after a few weeks I received confirmation that I had been awarded the scholarship. 134

ERASMUS+ Erasmus+ is the new European Union funding programme for education and training, youth and sport. Through the current Erasmus Mundus programme, we are supported by approximately £27 million of funding with a portfolio of six co-ordinated projects and 12 partner projects. Library & Information Services (L&IS) is at the heart of the learning, teaching and research experience for students and staff at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Our two learning centres are the physical hubs for library and IT provision. With daytime, evening and weekend opening hours, plus a variety of group and quiet spaces and wi-fi throughout, our learning centres are the ideal place for you to research and study. Both learning centres have PC and Apple Mac open-access computers offering a wide range of assistive, cutting edge and industry standard software to help you gain experience of many of the systems used in your chosen field. In terms of access, if we’re closed, you can make use of our open access computer facilities that are available 24 hours a day.


Our extensive library collections have been specially tailored and developed to enhance your learning and research experience. Both in the learning centre and online, you will find a wealth of resources in print and electronic formats - books for core and wider reading, a vast collection of academic journals and a broad range of ebooks. If it’s visual resources you are interested in, then we have an art and design slide collection, as well as an art-house and feature film collection to support your studies and research. We also have thesis and special collections such as artists’ books. In addition to our own collections you will be able to freely request other materials from the British Library. In each learning centre you will find a technology support desk, with IT staff providing expert support, advice and guidance. ON-CAMPUS Cardiff Met can offer a limited number of rooms/flats suitable for postgraduate students at the Cyncoed campus. These consist of shared flats, self-contained flats and some self catered en-suite rooms. Postgraduate students should apply in the same way as undergraduate students by completing the online application form at www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/accommodation and tick the appropriate boxes in the ‘halls preference’ section.

The office maintains a register of landlords with student houses. This list is constantly updated and is available to students online, via the Student Portal, once students have enrolled. Whilst we endeavour to list only properties of a reasonable standard, not all properties will have been inspected; the list therefore does not imply recommendation or approval of a landlord or an individual property. We also compile a list of students seeking to share with other students. This is a list where students contact us and place themselves on a ‘looking to share list’. This list is distributed to other students who want another student to join them in a house.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Landlords on our register will comply with all legislative regulations. We also provide a comprehensive advisory service with useful information on tenancy agreements, insurance and the pitfalls to avoid. Various booklets on the process of renting and students’ rights as tenants are available. All agreements and responsibilities when renting are between the landlord and the student (not Cardiff Met).

Accommodation

The International Office is very pleased to advise and assist international students from countries outside of the EU to arrange accommodation in Cardiff - whether this is in on-campus halls of residence or off-campus in private rented accommodation. The application procedure for international students looking to secure a place in on-campus halls of residence involves submitting an initial application form to the international office, along with a deposit to secure a room and only when students hold an unconditional offer. Students’ Union and Athletic Union STUDENTS’ UNION Cardiff Met Students’ Union (SU) has five main purposes:  To support and represent students across a range of issues  To facilitate student clubs, societies and interest groups  To provide students with employability opportunities, training and development through the UMAX and JobShop initiatives  To provide affordable commercial services, of which the proceeds go into funding all of the abovementioned  To ensure you have the best Student Experience possible On enrolment you will automatically become a member of Cardiff Met Students’ Union. The SU operates from a main office at the Cycnoed campus, with a satellite office at the Llandaff campus. Both campuses offer an SU run shop, as well as SU run catering, bar and entertainment facilities via two dedicated student centres - Centro at Cyncoed and Zen at Llandaff. At both of our campuses our students are encouraged to use our meeting rooms, break out spaces and are welcome to book our venues free of charge to use for social events. SPORTING FACILITIES

The Athletic Union is run by the Students’ Union and provides a quality service for our sporting students. We provide and support over 25 different Sports Clubs to ensure that we have something to meet every sport student’s interests.

The University already has a reputation for the support and development of elite performers across many sports and the hall of fame includes over 350 international competitors from 28 different sports, including World, Olympic, British and Commonwealth champions. The Athletic Union also administers a successful scholarship programme, which assists exceptional sporting ability. Furthermore, they have ‘focus sports’ which is an initiative aimed at improving sporting excellence across targeted performance sports at the University. New Developments at Cyncoed Over the next few years the University is investing heavily in the development of its sports facilities on the Cyncoed campus. Additions to our existing world-class sports facility portfolio include an expansion of the National Indoor Athletics Centre; the installation of a new six lane outdoor athletics track and winter athletics throwing facility; a new 3G IRB Reg 22 and FIFA two star rugby pitch and a new multi-purpose sports complex located at the rear of the existing tennis centre.
