06

Every skill that I learnt in my PhD, I use every single day in my job now. That includes the technical skills like measuring heart and blood vessel function, but also the softer skills, like how to write a research paper, how to communicate your work in scientific presentations or to general audiences, or how to work with participants/ patients to make them feel comfortable. I built a lot of knowledge during my PhD, but that doesn’t mean I have stopped learning, I think maybe I am just a little more efficient at it now! Victoria Meah, PhD in Exercise Physiology

07

While studying my undergraduate degree, I began taking a keen interest in the field of Data Science. Noticing my developing passion, my lecturer directed me to an application for a PhD at Cardiff Met that was perfectly suited to my interests. The team supported me constantly through the application process to make it as swift as possible. It’s an incredible thought that at the age of 24 I could graduate once again, but this time with the title of Doctor. I am keen to start my studies and excited to see what the future holds with Cardiff Met. Joel Pinney, PhD in Data Science

With 25 years’ experience in Procurement, it was important when committing to a programme of study for a PhD that the University I would select could challenge me from an academic and professional perspective. I am pleased to say that Cardiff Met - through my Director of Studies and Supervisor achieved this. The interaction with my peer group students also contributed to my learning and personal skillset. I have applied my learnings from the PhD in the procurement function of a FTSE 100 Oil and Gas organisation, as well as in my new role at a world leading medical device company in South Wales. In addition, I am also now acting as a subject matter expert in the supervision of another PhD student at Cardiff Met. Dr. David Allcock, PhD in Procurement

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION Applications for admission to doctoral awards are usually made by means of the submission of an initial research study application proposal, together with a university application form and the identification of people who are willing to act as referees. All applications for admission to doctoral awards are considered by the academic School or unit in which the research study will be undertaken. Schools and different awards will often have specific deadlines and/or requirements and will have some expectations regarding what is expected in your initial research study application proposal, so it is important to do some research first to be clear about where you think your application is best directed. You are strongly encouraged to make contact with potential supervisors or the specific doctoral programme lead to discuss your ideas prior to application. Once you make a formal application to study towards a doctoral award it will be considered by a Research Degrees Admissions Panel in the following ways: An assessment from your application of your academic suitability and experience (including your English language skills). An assessment from your application of the viability or feasibility of your intended research project. An assessment from your application of the fit between your intended research project with the research expertise in Cardiff Metropolitan University and whether an appropriate supervisory team can be identified. Following up with academic and personal references. As part of the application process you will be invited to attend an interview (either face-to-face, or remotely). This offers you an opportunity to discuss yourr proposed project with members of the doctoral awards application panel. If a conditional offer of admission is made, you will need to fulďŹ l any requirements that are stipulated and provide relevant documentary evidence before enrolment can commence. For more information please refer to www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/howtoapply Once you are offered a place to study for a doctoral award you will be invited to enrol via the University’s online self-service facility at: www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/selfservice 12

My experience of studying a Master’s programme in Fashion at Cardiff Met has been an exciting one. Throughout the programme, autonomous learning was encouraged. To create the output of my MA thesis, I was able to venture beyond the boundaries of fashion to produce a multifaceted garment incorporating programmable technologies. Throughout the process my tutors were overwhelmingly supportive, helping identify the required parts and materials, and introducing me to coding. As a designer, my newly acquired knowledge and skills have helped me become more conscious of my field and my surroundings; as a teacher, I will be able to impart more enhanced insights to my future students; as a person I have gained maturity and confidence. Bea Bajarias, MA Fashion Design

The past year studying the Master in Fine Art has been extremely informative and inspirational to me as a young student aspiring to be an artist. Visiting the Liverpool Biennial with some of my peers, working closely with other students in our studio space and producing and curating exhibitions are just some of the exceptional experiences I’ve had during the past year. However, the pinnacle for me was the chance to work as an invigilator at the Venice Biennale for five weeks, representing Wales and Sean Edwards’s exhibition ‘Undo Things Done’. I was able to apply for this once-in-a-life-time experience through Cardiff Met, as three students were chosen to work in Venice as part of the Wales in Venice team. The experience of working with the team has opened many doors for me and inspired my practice greatly. It allowed me to meet art enthusiasts from across Wales and discuss our practice and possible collaborations. I was also able to have tutorials with successful artists and curators regarding my practice and even got to live in Venice and experience the Biennale for over a month. I’m extremely grateful to the University for providing this amazing experience, and I will cherish the memories for the rest of my life. Gwenllian Llwyd, Fine Art MFA

My passion has always been solving problems that matter, and my early career focused on developing new commercial products for companies such as Apple and Ericsson. In recent years I have collaborated with a range of organisations to undertake research into the design and development of new innovation tools and strategies, and helped companies to develop new products and services. As a consequence I became fascinated by the factors and processes affecting personal and organisational creativity, so I started to dig deeper into creativity research. Creativity is about creating new solutions for the economy, companies, communities, individuals and for the planet. It is crucial for the success of organisations in the future, and in tackling the challenges that society faces. There are many factors that affect creativity, from personal motivation, engagement and skill development to organisational structures, strategies and processes. Understanding all these factors and their interrelationships is important as it has implications for how we enable creativity to thrive inside organisations, and for how we educate our students. My research has therefore helped inform the design of our learning and teaching spaces, and how we support and help foster student creativity. Dr Gareth Loudon, Professor of Creativity, Cardiff School of Art & Design 23

Completing a Master’s degree has been a positive experience. It has allowed me to develop as an artist and expand my work through self-directed study, research and practice, helping me form a more professional and complete portfolio. That in turn allows me to apply for a wider variety of jobs in the industry. Throughout the programme I had the opportunity to meet and work with other artists on several projects, gaining valuable experience in co-operating with people with different skill-sets. The most important aspect of the programme has been further developing my own style as an artist throughout the year, and consequently deciding which direction I wish to follow professionally, and where to focus my energy and art in order to be successful as an artist. Markos Kyriakopoulos, MA Illustration & Animation

24

Illustration & Animation MA/PgD/PgC The role of the illustrator or animator is not ephemeral, temporary or mere entertainment. It is ecological, cultural, political and technological, challenging the momentum of the twenty-first century. Illustrators and animators must deploy their skills and imagination to respond to the wider political and cultural climate with more urgency and vigour than ever. Imagination is a powerful force, able to create and configure new ideas and develop dreams for both the individual and humanity as a whole. This Master’s degree programme provides illustrators and animators with the skills and knowledge to effectively harness this power in their unique practice. This programme will appeal to graduates of any discipline of the visual arts, as well as professionals looking to sharpen their critical and theoretical skills. You will explore the role of the illustrator or animator through speculative methods in an interdisciplinary environment. Through a combination of self-directed studio practice, lectures, seminar sessions and reading groups, you will be closely and individually guided in the exploration of your own practice through your proposed project, as a critical and redirective process. We look to recruit brave, speculative, imaginative, and dedicated creative graduates who share our leading-edge-research concern for illustration and/or animation, and our instinct to imagine and explain. Our MA Illustration & Animation programme will enable you to enhance your career as, or to become, an established illustrator, artist, or animator, leading towards a career, a PhD, or to a Professional Doctorate in either art or design.

Programme Length: 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time.

Entry Requirements: You will normally have achieved a first class or second class upper division first degree (1st or 2:1 degree classification) in an appropriate subject, and/or equivalent professional standing or experience.

25

My experience as a postgraduate student at Cardiff Met has been one of tremendous personal, academic, and professional growth. The staff at the School of Art and Design are caring, encouraging, and have made me feel like part of a team and part of a wider family, rather than just a student. My supervisors and director of studies have guided me in a way that has greatly developed my confidence and independence in more than just academia. The research I conducted during my PhD has allowed me to help further develop state-of-the-art technology and software, and develop novel guidelines that have had real life implications in the Welsh food industry. I have been supported by the University to attend conferences which have also garnered great interest in commercial and academic collaborations between our university and other institutions and industry. Abbie Lawrence, PhD Thought for Food: An evidence-led approach to improving Welsh food industry competitiveness

28

My main reason for studying the MSc programme was to further prepare me for industry. While I believe that the undergraduate programme offered more than enough preparation for a role as a designer, I knew there was more I could get from the Master’s; a chance to get one step ahead of the competition and develop a more detailed approach to product design. Tom Fantom, MSc Product Design

EXPERT FOCUS My research interests focus on designing transformative learning experiences gained through practical ‘real-world’ projects that enable students to apply theory to practice in a meaningful way. The fashion industry is a fast-moving, competitive and passionate environment, with constant innovation and creativity at its heart. This inspires my approach to curriculum design within the degrees I lead. These courses include a blend of strategic and creative approaches to delivery and assessment. Having spent a decade within the fashion industry before returning to academia, I focus on fusing current industry challenges into assessment, without compromising on academic rigour. My approach to students learning is influenced by my analysis and understanding of the student lifecycle - focusing on students as individuals, who have evolving identities and needs. EXPERT FOCUS I came to Cardiff Met after working within a range of food science roles in the food industry. I have always loved science, and as everyone has to eat, these two fields merged within my studies and formed the basis of my drive into the food sector. The science of making food safe is something I believe everyone should understand, as it still causes 600 million people globally to be ill each year. Throughout my working life, my career has allowed me to travel and experience a wide range of cultures. This has made a huge impact on both my life and my career. It has allowed me to understand food in many ways. From cultivating to processing to consumption, having a global perspective on the drivers behind food and international markets has helped shape my learning and career development. Food is not just used for survival. It can be used to bring people together, create relationships, form social groups, unite different cultures, for sports performance, as a medicine, and in celebration... Ultimately, everyone has to eat, so as a career it is a sustainable industry to work in. Simon Dawson, MRes FHEA MIFST CSci, Programme Director for MSc Food Science and Technology 80

I have been working as a community pharmacist since I graduated, but have always had an interest in health psychology. I have just finished the first year of a full time PhD that incorporates both health psychology and my pharmacy background. It’s been a big learning curve: a typical working day now couldn’t be more different to my working day a year ago. I’d urge anyone who is considering a PhD to go for it - it’s never too late! When I enrolled in the MRes Biomedical Science programme I knew that I wanted to pursue biomedical research as a career. The intellectual freedom and hands-on approach to the programme further solidified my passion for research. The programme has a nice blend of classroom based learning in the first few months, followed by a six-month lab project that is yours from start to finish. Since graduating, I have moved to Boston, USA to pursue a career in drug discovery in oncology. Whilst applying for jobs it was clear that interviewers were impressed by my independent research experience, something that I can attribute primarily to the MRes programme. Choosing what to do after graduation was not an easy decision, however I realised that one subject interests me more than any other - Ethics, and I got good marks in the subject. Looking at possible postgraduate programmes, I found from the MA Sociology and Ethics of Sport programme. The idea of being able to study ethics further and combine it with a new subject appealed to me. Having discussed the programme with tutors, who were very supportive, it was an easy choice to carry on with my studies here at Cardiff Met. Meilyr Jones, MA Sociology and Ethics of Sport

For example; we were able to conduct interviews at British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) games and use Cardiff Met Sport TV as a platform to share our own content. For my work placement I was very fortunate to go out to Minsk, in Belarus to run the social media accounts for the European Olympic Committee at the European Games. I worked for a company called MSM management and looked after the Instagram stories which included interviewing competing athletes at the Opening and Closing Ceremony. I had an access all areas pass to go to every event where I filmed and edited daily ‘behind the scenes’ features. The programme has helped me in securing so many employment opportunities before I’ve even graduated! Mica Moore, MSc Sport Broadcast

EXPERT FOCUS I came to sport psychology later in life after my first career as an RAF Officer. I have always had a passion for swimming and an introduction to psychology via the Open University made me question how I could bring my two passions of sport and psychology together. A love of learning took me on a journey through a second MSc, a PhD, and a professional practice qualification. Fast forward fifteen years and I am now a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Cardiff Met and a Chartered Sport Psychologist working with athletes from individual sports across all levels of sport. I truly believe that sport psychology is one of those subjects where we can make a real difference not only to athletes’ performance but also to the quality of their lives in respect of mental wellbeing. My philosophy is that for me to achieve this, I need to be an allrounder: research informs both my teaching and my practice and vice versa. I hope that the students and athletes who I work with benefit from that multifaceted approach to the subject, and that the MSc Sport Psychology, in particular prepares students for the next stage of their journey to become sport psychologists, researchers, teachers, or individuals who can adopt a critical view of the world of sport to inform their (and others’) practice. Karen Howells PhD, CPsychol, SFHEA, Senior Lecturer in Sport Psychology

It not only taught me evidence based principles, but how to relay the information in practical terms to get a desired outcome. Ryan Stevens, MSc Strength & Conditioning

98

My internship at the Newport Dragons not only bolstered my competence in working with elite, male athletes but also gave me the opportunity to learn from some of the top rugby coaching staff and athletes in the world. I was given the reins to one of the senior players for programming and implementation. This allowed me to fully create a resistance program that targets his main goals as a scrumhalf, and to coach him through each of his workouts. Mollie Martin, MSc Strength & Conditioning

Industry experts from various fields in Tech were invited as guest speakers during seminars and workshops to further stimulate our understanding and expand on concepts we had been taught in class, as well as give insights into the industry. The programme structure allowed for more independent research with my peers along with presentations opportunities, which greatly impacted my understanding on the subject matter and how to effectively communicate my point across to an audience. I have gained not only technical knowledge and proficiency, but also research-based thinking and critical thinking. I have also been able to establish valuable relationships with peers as well as professors, which I am certain to leverage regardless of whatever path my career takes.
