A guide to School Liaison Welcome to the School Liaison 5 minute guide to the services we can offer you at Cardiff Metropolitan University. We appreciate that your timetable and time is very limited, however this step by step guide will give you an idea of the free services we can offer you over the year, and how we can support you and your students. We call it “working together�. Each section within the guide will give you the information on talks and visit days we offer, the time of year and year suitability which it applies to e.g. year 12 or year 13. We hope you will find this guide of help, but please do contact us if you have any specific requests.

YEAR 12 Introduction to Higher Education - The next Step This talk covers the “next step”, the transmission from year 11 to year 12 or college is sometimes a completely over powering experience for the student. Past students have mentioned that the change from year 11 to year 12 is daunting and liberating! The talk covers the “cycle” that year 12 can expect during the next two years - informative and lasts 50 minutes.
YEAR 12 Choosing a course With over 40,000 + courses and over 329 institutions there’s a lot of choice out there! This presentation will start your students thinking about courses which are available to them and how to search on the UCAS Many students are unaware of the vast amount of courses out there, and many do not appreciate that “English” can consist of 2238 related subjects! ,last 50 minutes and combines the introduction to UCAS event.
YEAR 13 UCAS Procedures including Personal Statements This talk prepares the student for their ucas application – This addresses the complete UCAS application from “why go to University?”, finding the right university and hints on preparing the personal statement – lasts 50 minutes
YEAR 12 PARENTS The UCAS Procedure This presentation involves the parents of year 12 students and is usually presented during an evening session. It enables parents to understand the UCAS procedure – last approximately 60 minutes

YEAR 13 Finance Talk Finance is one of the biggest concerns when going to university and recent changes have made this complicated to understand. However, this finance session will involve all the students with a game quiz known as “university challenge”. Students become involved immediately guessing and balancing a year at university. A fun way of looking at finance – last 50 minutes. YEAR 13 Parents Finance Talk Finance is one of the major concerns for parents. This presentation will help parents understand the costs of going to university as well as the grants and loans available. This is presented during an evening session and lasts approx 60 minutes.

YEAR 12/13 Subject Talks There are many individual subjects that we can offer e.g. sport talk/business. Contact the school liaison section for further details
The Next Step All talks are subject to availability; unfortunately due to tight timetables most schools require talks on the same day of the same month and therefore we get booked up very quickly. So book up and ring as soon as your term start. A member of the school liaison team will be on hand to take your call.

YEAR 13 Student Life The life as a student is not all about studying as any student will tell you! It is about the experience of becoming independent, meeting new friends and budgeting. This talk is given by a recent student graduate who has experienced the university life last 50 minutes.
